COLTS DEFENSE SHINES IN LOSS; PAXTON TOSSES 3 PICKS AS CHIEFS WIN 17-13 MAHOMES THROWS 2 SCORES AS CHIEFS REMAIN UNDEFEATED
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- In almost the exact opposite fashion, QB Paxton Lynch was impressive on Sunday, throwing 3 interceptions, en route to a 42% completion rating and QBR of 31.3 The youngster struggled to maintain his presence in the pocket after a pair of Chiefs' sacks by LB's Justin Houston and Dee Ford all afternoon. Lynch was able to manage 247 yards on the afternoon, allowing RB Marlon Mack to score his first touchdown of the season.
The Colts rushing attack, slightly improved from week 1, managed 66 yards on 18 attempts with 22 of those yards falling to Lynch -- the rest to the returning starter, Mack. "I was ready to get back out there last week, so I'm glad I got to this week. It just sucks because we obviously were in this late. You know how it goes though, and we'll be back next week fighting again." Rookie Cam McCoy mysteriously didn't receive a carry on the entire afternoon, a mistake OC Nick Sirianni admitted, "I have to work Cam in every game, and that's on me. We kind of fell behind early, and while the defense did an amazing job of keeping us in the game, we found ourselves in a lot of passing situations." Even more mysteriously, the rookie found himself with no attention in the pass game, though he did register 8 routes ran, "It was a weird afternoon offensively for us, and I'm sure that I'll be more involved in the future. I was hoping to be able to step in and make an impact today though, that's for sure," the 11th pick of the draft said after the game.
While Lynch did toss 3 interceptions in the contest, he also threw for nearly 250 yards (247). Star wideout TY Hilton hauled in 140 of those yards on 8 grabs - the veteran also nearly scored on a 73 yard grab in the third quarter, falling short at the 1 yard line. Mack would eventually score on that drive. Tight End Eric Ebron, relatively quiet in this early portion of the season, added in 4 grabs for 43 yards, while newcomers Laquon Treadwell and Allen Hurns each pulled in 2 passes for 31 and 33 yards, respectively.
The Indianapolis defense, holding star QB Patrick Mahomes to a career-low (as a starter) 17 points, found themselves frustrated and exhausted when their effort yielded no results. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, after promising a more creative pass rush, paid credit to his defense, while acknowledging that sometimes, you just come up short, "I'm happy with the rush today; anytime you can get 4 sacks out of the defense, you know that puts you into contention for the win. Sometimes, its not enough, and that's sort of what happened today, but if we do that every week, we're not going to lose often, I'll tell you that."
Kicker Adam Vinatieri, who sent some reeling last week when he missed a simple 31 yarder that nearly cost them a divisional game, connected on both of his attempts on the afternoon, knocking down a long of 49. Punter Rigoberto Sanchez also connected on an NFL-season-long (currently) 78 yard punt in the first quarter; Sanchez averaged 55.8 yards on 4 punts in the afternoon; the youngster out of Hawai'i has quickly become one of the top punters in the NFL since the departure of Colts fan favorite Pat McAfee.
The Colts will be away for their first game of the season against Carolina next Sunday, as Tyrod Taylor returns to face Cam Newton and Christian McCaffrey.

TY Hilton came up just short of scoring his first touchdown of the season on this 73 yard reception; Hilton would end the day with 140 yards on 8 receptions, but failed to find the endzone as QB Paxton Lynch turned the ball over twice in the redzone.
RB Marlon Mack, returning from sitting out most of Week 1, celebrates his first score of the season with the Indianapolis faithful. Mack managed 15 carries for 44 yards and a score, leading the Colts on the ground.
Rookie wideout Fisher Harrison, a 5th round selection out of Boise State, failed to corral his only target of the afternoon, as Kansas City intercepts QB Paxton Lynch on the goalline. Harrison, who has posted no receptions on the season, managed 73 receptions for 1,148 yards and 15 touchdowns in his final season at Boise State.
INDIANAPOLIS SCORES 24 UNANSWERED IN OVERTIME COMEBACK OVER CAROLINA TYROD'S FIRST START RESULTS IN 4 TURNOVERS; SUDFELD AVAILABLE NEXT WEEK?
CAROLINA, NC -- Thanks in large part to two key turnovers by Cam Newton in Panthers territory, the Colts were able to overcome five turnovers of their own in a narrow 24-21 overtime victory on Sunday afternoon. The issues began early with QB Tyrod Taylor's first start as a Colt -- the veteran fumbled two times in the first half, while RB Marlon Mack added another fumble in the second quarter as well. Coming out of the half, Tyrod threw the first of two third quarter interceptions; audible booing greeted Taylor as he returned to the bench after his fourth turnover of the day.
The fourth quarter however, was different for Indy - two consecutive rushing touchdowns by Mack and rookie RB Cam McCoy, on the heel of interceptions by Colts defenders FS Malik Hooker and CB Quincy Wilson, pulled them within a score; a 5 drive, 76 yard drive by Tyrod Taylor, capped off by a 13 yard TD reception by Deon Cain, tied it all up at 24.The former Virginia Tech product Taylor, who finished the afternoon 10/28 for 172 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, had a feeling their poor fortune had turned around then, saying "I just figured we were in for some good luck; I played...bad today honestly, and I'm happy we were able to band together for the fourth and OT for the win today man. It's just a relief to know the team's got my back for rough days."
RB Marlon Mack, breaking 100 yards for the first time this year, ended the afternoon with 24 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Cam McCoy added another 11 carries for 41 yards and another score. Thanks to 66 yards from Tyrod Taylor, and a 20 yard carry for star TY Hilton, Indianapolis finished with 241 yards on the ground, showing the Colts resolve to make the run game sustainable. Offensive Coordinator Nick Sirianni stressed that fact in the postgame, "We're going to run, and we're going to run, and then we're going to run some more. We're not going to have five turnovers every week, and if we do, then we'll probably run even more."
Head Coach Frank Reich was very complimentary of the defense from the podium following the game, "Matt has got this defense firing; I know we gave the ball up too many times early, but this defense is young, fast, and exciting. It's good to see, and they were a key component to today's victory." Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus heads up a squad that has surrended 51 points through 3 games, but harped that its a number that can still see improvement, "There are definitely facets of the defense that we can improve. I thought the guys played great today in seizing their opportunities - Malik and Quincy both played fantastic, especially in the 4th."
Indianapolis will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week; the team also announced that TE Eric Ebron has been signed to a 4 year, $27.5M extension. TE Jack Doyle is rumored to be seeking a deal that is similar in length and guarantees, though talks have remained quiet on that front. LE Jabaal Sheard turned down a one year offer worth $11.5M, though both sides seem determined to get a deal done.

RB Marlon Mack fumbles for the first time on the season; the back out of South Florida finished the afternoon with 24 carries for 114 yards and a score. The Colts finally righted the ship on a struggling rushing attack to begin the year - they ended with 241 yards rushing as a team. HC Frank Reich has stated that the split at RB is comfortable for the team, as the backs both bring different styles to the table.
While he didn't find tremendous success through the air, QB Tyrod Taylor converted a key 4th down late to keep the Colts in the game. Taylor finished with 66 yards on the ground and 172 yards through the air. The veteran quarterback was boo'd by the fans after his fourth turnover of the afternoon before leading the comeback. Backup QB Nate Sudfeld, a fan favorite from Indiana University, returns from injury next week, only adding to the controversy at quarterback for the team.
WR Deon Cain celebrates his first score of the season with the offensive line. The young speedster out of Clemson scored the only receiving touchdown of the afternoon by Indianapolis to square things up at 21. While Cain hasn't seen the field much during the beginning of the season, OC Nick Sirianni continues to race about Cain's prowess on the practice field, hinting at increased usage over the rest of the season.

NO WIN TO BAIL OUT TYROD; 4 TURNOVERS AS COLTS FALL 20-14
STARTING JOB IN JEOPARDY AFTER 8 TURNOVERS IN 2 WEEKS AS FANS CALL FOR SUDFELD
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- 8 turnovers in two weeks is enough to question the competency of any quarterback, and QB Tyrod Taylor is no exception, as he addressed the elephant in the room from his locker after the game, "I know that people are going to want the other guys to have a shot. This is nothing new in my career, and I'm going to go out there on Tuesday and take snaps from whoever they tell me to take snaps from. We have a bye next week, so I'm just looking to get back out on the practice field and have a go." The 2 game starter was unable to lead the Colts from behind this week, although the defense once again kept Indianapolis within a score. Taylor completed the afternoon going 15/29 for 175 yards and a score; he also added 7 scrambles for 50 yards and a score as Indianapolis struggled to create anything on the ground against a stout Buccaneers defense.
QB Nate Sudfeld, former Indiana University product, has heard the calls for him to see the field, "Of course I'd love a shot in the regular season. It's what any kid dreams of man." While the front office and coaching staff has not acknowledged a quarterback change, the Indianapolis fanbase immediately began calling for one after the game. "How they didn't bench Taylor during this game is beyond me -- you have guys you can go to, so why didn't they?" columnist Bob Kravitz wrote, immediately following the game. "If it's me, I'm giving the ball to Sudfeld, and seeing what he can do. We've seen Tyrod in action, and we've seen Lynch in action. I'm not saying I'm not a believer, but they both have a long way. So let's move with the youth here and give Nate a shot."
RB Marlon Mack, who carried the ball 12 times for 29 yards, fumbled for the second straight week, "I've got to do better at maintaining possession. Frankly, its embarrassing to lose the ball like that, and when we're already struggling to hold possession, it just do anybody any good." Rookie Cam McCoy, held to 3 carries as the Colts found themselves playing from behind, only attempted 3 rushes, yet barely managed a yard, "It's tough man. I only got three opportunities today, and I just couldn't capitalize on it."
TE Eric Ebron, fresh off the signing of a new 4-year deal to stay in Indianapolis, clocked his best game of the year, hauling in 6 receptions for 63 yards. Stud WR TY Hilton, with 3 catches for 33 yards, was the only other Colt with more than 2 receptions, although he was unable to find the endzone. Mack, WR Laquon Treadwell, and WR Allen Hurns all were able to manage two receptions a piece, with only Hurns able to find the endzone.
Defensively, the Colts remained top-tier. For the second time in as many games, LE Jabaal Sheard was able to register a sack - while no other Indianapolis defenders were able to record a sack, they were able to wrack up 18 QB pressures on the afternoon. Unfortunately, the squad was unable to produce a turnover, which ended up being the deciding factor in the loss. "We want to hit the QB, and we're going to create turnovers when we do that. We just need to work on doing that more," Sheard said after the game. When asked about progress on a new deal, the Left End remained rather mum, saying "We're talking, yeah, but to be honest, I'm looking for a longer deal. I'd like to retire here if we're talking truth." The sides remain pretty far apart, as GM Chris Ballard has been pursuing a 1 year deal with 85-rated LE. "Jabaal is a supreme addition to any team and to any locker room, but sometimes, you make hard decisions as a GM, and like any, you're going to get disagreements along the way. It's our job to work towards a middle product that helps both sides."
Unusual for the Colts locker room, there was a bit of animosity at TE Jack Doyle's locker after the game, no doubt extending from fellow TE Eric Ebron's recent contract extension, "Look, I've asked Indy for 4 years. I'm being honest. That's what I want. I'm at a point in my career where I'm looking for a long deal, and if I can't get that here, I'll get it somewhere else." Doyle, since Ebron's arrival, has been somewhat relegated to a blocking role in recent seasons. "People write me off as a non-receiving threat, but I can do it all. We have a wealth of talent on this offense, so it's tough for everyone to get a chance to showcase that talent sometimes.

RB Marlon Mack fumbles for the second time this season; although the Colts were able to recover it, OC Sirianni said its definitely a concern, "Marlon's gotta hold on to it; Either way, I want to involve McCoy more, but that doesn't mean less work for Mack." Mack finished the afternoon with only 12 carries for 29 yards, though the Colts backfield only has 21 carries on the day.
QB Tyrod Taylor stretches out for the score. Taylor finished the day with 7 carries for 50 yards and this touchdown. While Taylor has been nothing exciting in the run game, his 8 turnovers in two weeks is a major cause for concern; the coaching staff hinted that they will evaluate all positional needs over the team's bye week.
QB Tyrod Taylor finds WR Allen Hurns for his only receiving touchdown of the afternoon. The grab was Hurns first and only touchdown of the season, as the newcomer has only managed 7 grabs over his first four games with the Indianapolis Colts, which places him at third on the team for receptions behind Hilton and Ebron.
ADDITIONAL NOTES FROM WEEK 4
- 8 TURNOVERS IN TWO WEEKS IS A CAUSE FOR CONCERN AS COACHES WILL EVALUATE QUARTERBACK POSITION OVER BYE.
- TE JACK DOYLE HAS DEMANDED A 4 YEAR EXTENSION OR WILL TEST FREE AGENCY.
- LE JABAAL SHEARD HAS TURNED DOWN A 1 YEAR OFFER WORTH $11.0M.
JACK DOYLE REQUESTS A TRADE FROM THE COLTS TWO SIDES UNABLE TO AGREE ON EXTENSION - DOYLE LOOKS FOR MORE INVOLVEMENT
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- After negotiations over a possible extension turned sour, start TE Jack Doyle is requesting a trade from the Indianapolis Colts. After it became clear Doyle would not be receiving a 3 or 4 year extension, the 86-rated Tight End ended any further discussions with the team.
The Colts recently committed to TE Eric Ebron on a $27.5M deal over the next 4 seasons - backup Mo Alie-Cox has been seeing the field more and more often for Indianapolis this season, something GM Chris Ballard is excited about, "It's going to hurt us losing a player of Jack's caliber, but Mo has been hungry, and he's going to surprise some people, mark my words. We're obviously going to work with Jack and his team to get him in a situation that he's comfortable with."
Head Coach Frank Reich took it seemingly in stride, "I was a former player, and I understand that sometimes the best thing is a change of scenery. As far as our team, its business as usual, and that's next-man-up." Reich did acknowledge that a third TE will likely join the roster if Doyle is dealt, "We need three TE's, and honestly, we can never have enough TE's."
Additional Notes for Week 5 [Bye Week]

COLTS STAVE OFF JAX 20-13 AS SUDFELD MAKES FIRST CAREER START RUSHING ATTACK ALLOWS YOUNGSTER TO DELIVER
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- In his first career NFL start, QB Nate Sudfeld delivered a victory to Colts fans, throwing for 2 scores and 1 interception on Monday Night Football. Sudfeld, who only managed 120 yards through the air, was aided by a diverse rushing attack lead by RB Marlon Mack and RB Cam McCoy. Mack broke 100 yards for the second time this season, finishing with 18 carries for 104 yards on the evening, while McCoy added 12 carries for 54 yards. McCoy, who technically started for the first time this season, saw a much more expanded role in the passing game; while the rookie only managed a single catch, he was targeted a team-high 6 times on the night.
While Sudfeld was only able to complete 11 of 24 passes, it was his presence in the pocket that was most impressive to Head Coach Frank Reich, "I was happy that he wasn't getting chased out of the pocket every other play - he did a really good job of hanging in there and trusting the line." Reich, when pressed about the status of Sudfeld moving forward, added, "We're taking it one week at a time, and one week at a time only. Nate's going to start next week, but I'm not going to get into a whole bunch of promises right now. We're looking forward to Tennessee next week, and we're not looking past that." TY Hilton, who hauled in 4 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown, was also impressed with Sudfeld's first start, "It's tough to come in for your first game, let alone on primetime man. Monday Night Football, and you come out and win your first one? My man." WR Deon Cain hauled in the only other Colts TD, adding 2 receptions for 25 yards in the victory.
QB Tyrod Taylor, who signed this offseason with the Colts in hopes of becoming the starting QB, was not available for questions following the game. The veteran Taylor signed a 2 year deal worth $23.0M this summer.
Leading the way with 1.5 sacks, LE Jabaal Sheard continued to lead the defense in their staunchy ways, only allowing a season-high of 21 points on the season. "We're just beginning to click, and it's going to be exciting the longer we play together, the way guys can work off of each other will be pretty cool to see," the veteran DE said at his locker following the win. When asked about his contract negotiations, Sheard said, "I'm looking out for me in the same way they're looking out for them. I'm gonna get mine, but I'd like to do that here."
One of the larger stories on the evening, was the trade of TE Jack Doyle to the Dallas Cowboys; news broke shortly following the win. Doyle, who suited up for the game, but failed to register a catch, was professional in his handling of it, saying "I just want to thank Mr. Irsay for giving me this chance when nobody else wanted to. I hold that very dear to my heart, and I'll always love Indianapolis, nothing can change that. However, I'm going to bring that same energy and passion to Dallas, and I hope that maybe when we're not playing, maybe some of you guys can pull for me too. Thank Indy." Early reports suggest that a player + picks were acquired in the deal, but nothing concrete has been announced by either sides.

WR TY Hilton scores on the opening drive of the game; while Hilton leads the Colts in receptions and receiving yards, the star WR has only scored one time on the season, as teams clamp down on him in the redzone.
WR Deon Cain hauls in a busted-play-turned-scramble in the second quarter. While Cain has only caught 5 passes on the season, he has managed to turn two of those grabs into touchdowns - he is tied with WR Laquon Treadwell for the most on the team.
RB Marlon Mack stiffarm's his way to a 39 yard gain to put the nail in the coffin. Mack broke 100 yards for the second time this season, re-establishing his role as lead back for the team. Rookie Cam McCoy, while getting his first start, only received 12 carries for 54 yards on the day.

COLTS DEAL END FOR END; DOYLE TO DALLAS FOR RANDY GREGORY DALLAS WILL ALSO PART WITH A 3RD AND A 6TH IN THE DEAL FOR THE TIGHT END
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- After asking management for a trade that could work out for both parties, the Indianapolis Colts have parted way with longtime star TE Jack Doyle [86 OVR], sending the esteemed pass-catcher to the Dallas Cowboys for RE Randy Gregory [80 OVR]. The Colts have had their eyes on Gregory's expiring contract for most of the season, targeting him over the offseason as a possible replacement for LE Jabaal Sheard's possible departure, or as a simple upgrade over RE Kemeko Turay.
Gregory, a 4 year veteran out of Nebraska, will start immediately at Right End for the Colts, with Turay spelling both Gregory and Sheard at DE. General Manager Chris Ballard hinted that the Colts see Gregory in their future at defensive end, "He's unique in that he can line up on either side, he's just plain talented. We're excited to have him, and we're excited to add another player that wants to be here."
Dallas also sends a 3rd & a 6th in the 2021 NFL Draft to complete the trade for Doyle.
INDIANAPOLIS RECEIVES: RE RANDY GREGORY [80 OVR], 2021 3RD, 2021 6TH
DALLAS RECEIVES: TE JACK DOYLE [86 OVR]
