Always nice way to start the season with a couple wins over your rivals. Having a dual threat QB like Jones and a solid RB like Fields will help carry you to some wins and hopefully a Bowl game in Year 1.

Hey man thanks for checking in! Yeah I am getting cautiously optimistic, but my first three games are probably the worst three teams on my schedule (with the exception of maybe Rice) so I am almost chalking them up as must wins. Usually winning/losing wouldn't bother me this early on, but they only gave me a two year contract and you can't turn coaching contracts off. I'm going to be bummed if I get canned from UTEP after just two years lmao, so I am trying to get as many wins as possible early on. Definitely feeling the pressure through these first couple of games.

DOMINANT DEFENSE: MINERS CRUSH ROADRUNNERS

L: Brandon Johnson finds Kavika Johnson in the back of the endzone for a score. R: Sincere McCormick gets swallowed up for a safety.

El Paso (TX) -- The Miners entered Saturday night's contest riding high after a 2-0 start in which both wins came against local rivals. However, there were still questions about just how impressive that 2-0 start was considering it both teams are currently winless. It was widely accepted that the UTSA Roadrunners would prove to be a much more formidable opponent, as they entered the game 2-1 featuring an impressive win over Oklahoma State.

It's safe to say UTEP shut up those doubters tonight. The Miners came out and rocked the Roadrunners in what was probably their most impressive performance yet, especially defensively.

The game got out to a bit of a rocky start for UTEP. The Miners was slow to get rolling tonight and started the game with two three-and-outs. Hunter Duplessis knocked through a 25 yard field goal with 5:10 remaining in the first to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead. That field goal would stand as the only points of the first quarter. The Miners drove the ball into UTSA territory, but a Brandon Jones interception stalled the drive.

UTEP finally got on the board with 6:15 remaining in the first half. UTEP briefly put an end to their redzone blues when Brandon Jones found Kavika Johnson in the back of the endzone for an 11 yard score on third and goal. After a forcing a Roadrunner punt, Jones and Johnson linked up again. This time for a huge 85 yard score to extend UTEP's lead to 14-3. The Miners carried this lead into halftime.

The second half was primarily all about the UTEP defense. Defensively, the Miners were firing on all cylinders this half. UTEP embraced the strategy of keeping everything in front of them and not surrendering any big plays.

At first glance, you may notice Cordale Grundy completed 19/22 passes on the evening. However, he only threw for 90 yards! The UTEP defensive backs took away everything deep, and when Grundy inevitably resorted to the check down and the Miner linebackers swarmed to the ball. UTSA never even got close to scoring in the second half.

Offensively, the Miners mainly relied on ball control and killing the clock in the second half. This meant a heavy workload for Joshua Fields, who had another 20+ carry outing. UTEP added a 40 yard field goal by Gavin Baechle late in the third quarter to extend the lead to 17-3.

Early in the fourth quarter, UTEP drove the ball to the UTSA inch yard line. After failing three different times to punch the ball in, the Miners turned it over on downs. On the very next play, the UTEP defense didn't even let Sincere McCormick come close to getting the ball out of the endzone. McCormick was stopped for a safety which extended the UTEP lead to 19-3.

Gavin Baechle added another field goal with 1:57 left to play, and the game simply could not end soon enough if you were a Roadrunner supporter. The clock eventually struck zero and the Miners came away with an impressive 22-3 victory.

Really liking this so far! You had me hooked when I saw Darren McFadden would be the coach lol. Had to go back and re-watch some of McFadden's highlights at Arkansas after I saw he was gonna be the coach. Dude was unbelievable in college.

And really solid start to the season! Looks like the Miners are well on their way to a bowl game this season!

Thanks! I'm a big fan of the dynasty you have going on yourself, I'll be sure to start leaving more comments in it instead of just lurking haha. Definitely pleased with how the season is going so far, I'd still be ecstatic just with 6-6 and 7-5. Will be interesting to see if I can keep winning when I start playing better teams.
