I lied...I just can't leave this stuff alone.

I have a video uploading that's going to prove very enlightening for some, but in the meantime I want to ask the OP - who's your CF?

My upload is slow - even with this being around a 10 minute video it'll probably be an hour or more before its done.

    Easily. Just watch me.

I would like to see that happen in the open outfield rather than against the wall before I take any issue with it.

Looks like nothing but a ball that was going to be a homerun until the wind pushed it back. Being that out of play is involved here I don't think it's fair to cry foul that the marker moved.

If this happens in almost every game just post a picture of it happening to you in the open outfield so we can check it out.

Catching a fly ball is harder than it should be imo. It's a problem when I see more OF errors than IF errors.

          this.
Doesn't matter how good your CF is as some suggest.
...and this didn't happen last year, so they messed with something that worked.

I wish I had a video for you kehlis, but it has happen to me this year way more often than the past. wide open field routine pop up right, the field has plenty of time and is camping right under the ball and all of a sudden the fielder looks like he trips and stumbles, ball drops. I can understand fielder ratings argument and what not, but I have had it happen to Heyward, bourjos, holliday and jay on my cardinals franchise. its definitely causes some head scratching moments as to what did I do wrong, especially when everyone of those outfielders can make a catch with their back to the ball and all of sudden turn around at the last second to catch the ball. I know the developers say that errors are not randomly generated, but there have been several of plays that resulted in errors that makes that claim hard to believe.

Video's not finished uploading but I'll go ahead and post my analysis. It should show up once it finishes uploading.

              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CaLyEgiFgco?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So, here's what's going on. I fired up the community challenge mode and, with the autohit tool, set up a scenario to hit the ball in the exact same place with three different center fielders. It's not identical to the OP's, but it's close enough because it's hitting low off the wall (that's what the marker on the wall means - once you see that it's basically never lying, unlike the marker in mid-flight). I recorded my setting the auto-hit parameters so you can duplicate this if you want - anyone can do this on their game.

I did 10 attempts with each fielder.

1st is Colin Cowgill, backup LAA outfielder with a 59 Fielding rating (secondary CF position). Pay attention to where the landing marker goes before finally appearing on the wall, not where my fielder is positioned. It's all in the same general area, but by no means is it shrinking on the exact same spot every time. Once the ball is near the wall the game switches the marker onto the wall to reflect its true landing spot. For this one, I'd say 4 is probably the most egregious example of the marker "lying" - if I tried to camp under that marker I'd miss it entirely. Early on in this test I even wanted to follow the marker a bit too much despite knowing where the ball was going. That got better later.

Next is Trout, one of the highest fielding ratings in the game. By and large his last marker positions are very accurate, although he has one (attempt 6) that's a little sketchy - which shows that no one is immune to mistakes in this game. If the ball is hit any harder on a line that becomes a very tough play to position for.

3rd is a back up 1B that I play out of position, and here's where it really gets crazy. 5 is one of the worst marker misreads I have ever seen, comparable to the OP's and the whole thing is really a crap shoot with some markers acting like they'll leave the yard and others like 4 in the first fielder test, looking like they'd land on the warning track.

There are two important things to take from this:

1: The ball marker system is absolutely working as intended. It does "lie" at times, but that's due to the fielder's ratings and can greatly affect the user's ability to get in position for a catch.

2: I caught EVERY LAST ONE of those balls, regardless of where the marker was headed, because I knew exactly where the ball was going. The game did not force me to miss a single one because I wasn't lined up with the marker. Get too reliant on the visual aids and you can potentially pay for it.

bcruise, thanks for your very well thought out insight on this subject. My situation I was having is a bit different because the fly ball wasn't anywhere near the wall but right in the open of the field, not in the gap or anywhere where the fielder had to travel a good distance. However, is there any way that replicating those situations using community challenges could change the way the A.I. behaves? (I know you probably cant say for sure, not being a developer but I know you have a lot more time under your belt playing the show than I do) but since using community challenges its not playing a full game, but just scenarios. I only ask because most of the time I see these thing happening to me when I'm winning by quite a bit of runs and more or less being one sided games. any thoughts?

To me this is all pretty easy to understand. The OP was going to the marker, but watch the shadow of the ball, it clearly goes left of that marker the whole time. So it's not a problem with the game, it's just like bcruise said.

Answering that last statement would take this thread in a bad direction (one that gets it locked), so I'm going to pass on that one.

It's like you said, unless the devs confirm it we can't be 100% sure it works exactly like this in the normal game - I'm not going to just state something like fact that I don't have the means to confirm. I've shown the scenario that anyone can recreate and try for themselves and then apply that knowledge to the main game. People can draw their own conclusions from here on.

Although there's really no AI to speak of here - I'm the one controlling the fielder, after all.

But I can say from personal experiences in normal games that wall balls can be the toughest hits to play in this game with a bad fielder (lord knows the Cubs have had plenty of them) because of the marker doing what it does. Not to mention the risk of misplaying a ball like that - if you don't make that catch in Petco it's a triple at minimum, and possible ITP HR.

I'm not immune to it, either - I mentioned upthread that I get too latched onto reading the marker too. But it's the price you pay for the fielder you have out there - I think the Trout examples showed that pretty well.

It plays the same in either mode regardless of score, inning, etc.

                        Well, that's that then.

I've managed to see some of the bunting overkill in certain challenge situations too, so I had a feeling there wasn't any difference at all. Thanks for the confirmation WW.

I'm not going to keep trying to defend myself when I have proof of the problem in my video. At least a few of you are smart enough to see it. My center fielder was Charlie Blackmon, with his fielding skill in the mid 70's. This has also happened with Alex Gordon, who's fielding is in the upper 80's. The issue isn't the outfielders stats, or my ability to catch fly balls. Maybe watch the video a little more carefully and you'll understand. THE MARKER DOESN'T GO WHERE THE BALL IS GOING TO LAND, THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. AND IN THIS EXAMPLE IT MOVED AT THE VERY LAST SECOND TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LOCATION.

                          DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND???

I have seen the issue with the ball marker being stupid at the wall. But that is the only time. And you are going about this the wrong way. Might be banned if you keep acting like you are.

No one said you suck at the game. They gave you reasons for why it might have happened and you got defensive.
