Cardinals have some big decisions to make within the next week before the trade deadline passes. The Cardinals were already without Adam Wainwright until most likely September with a fractured wrist, but now the Cardinals have lost Jaime Garcia until probably September with a Torn Finger Ligament.

The market for pitchers is pretty scarce but one that does pop out is the Mets' Zack Wheeler. Surprised the Mets are willing to part with him, but their asking price is really steep. Another option on the Cardinals mind is FA LH Cliff Lee. Lee would just be brought in for support for the 2nd half of the season and not signed to any long term deal. The final option would be to stay within the organization, but that hasn't proven effective as their youngsters just don't seem quite ready for major league action. Tim Cooney who pitched for injured Wainwright was shelled in his only start. The Cardinals do have Jack Flaherty and Alex Reyes they could turn to, but neither seem ready to pitch in the pressure situation the Cardinals will find themselves in for the remainder of the season.

Cliff Lee is a beast! In my franchise, the Mets signed him in June when Zack Wheeler went on the DL. He threw 2 consecutive CG SHO and now, right before the break, has an ERA in the low 2.00s. Wheeler has come off the DL, but I can't take Lee out of the rotation. So, now the Mets have an over-qualified long reliever/6th starter. Now, if they can get their new/old leadoff man, Jose Reyes, over the Mendoza line, they might be able to catch the Marlins.

I am through the first month of the season in my Houston Astros franchise, and let me tell you guys, it went swimmingly.

I made three trades to acquire Jonathan Lucroy, Will Myers, and Odubel Herrera. Gave up my best prospects and Carlos Gomez/Jason Castro.

The Yankees have made it back to the World Series for a 2nd straight year after finishing off the Astros then eliminating the Mariners in 6 games. Seattle was tough as they caught us off guard with their hitting in a 5-2 game that saw our ace Manshiro Tanaka struggle. We rebounded in Game 2 dominating 7-3 and got off to another go start as we led 5-0 after 6. Despite some good pitching from Fransisco Liriano, he gave 4 runs giving way to the bullpen to hold the 1 run lead. Jordan Walden and Andrys Visicano held down the fort shutting down the Mariners hitting in the 5-4 win.

A 3-run HR by Nelson Cruz knocked us out in Game 5, but a great display of hitting by Gincarlo Stanton (2 HR's) plus a Greg Bird/Gerald Wallace combination (1 HR each) led to an easy win 13-3. We beat King Felix for the 2nd time this series 5-3 thanks to 2 Nolan Arenado HR's. It's good to see us repeat as AL Champions, but another World Series trophy (#29!) is the goal. We'll face the Washington Nationals who beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1.

This has been a fun franchise so far; I took a peak into the future as we will have about $80 million to spend on free agents. It will be awfully tempting to potentially go after guys like Jose Fernandez, Andrew McCutheon, and Michael Brantley. As a rookie to the Show, it's been satisfying to win games albeit with a team with a large payroll. I'll eventually move on to something more challenging as I get better. But for now, I'm looking forward to repeating as Champs!

The Marlins swung a trade, but it didn't involve 3B Brito or SP Heredia. More on that situation a bit later.

The team was looking at their declining pitching prospects in the minors and decided to make a move to bolster things a bit. They traded with the Royals for SP prospect Loren Rasmussen and in return sent a trio of prospects, 1B Aquino, 3B Jeffries, and SS Fernando Abreu.

"This team's rise was built on dominating pitching and is continuing due to dominating pitching. We want to make sure we give ourselves every chance to develop the next generation of dominating pitchers, " the Marlins GM commented.

Between graduating prospects (Ordonez, Heredia), gambles that might not be panning out (Durango, Mader, Serrano, though the jury might still be out on Serrano and Mader despite being a "prospect" at 26), and prospects that have refused to improve to the next level (Kolek, Valdez, Okada, Bullock though the latter is getting a shot in the majors due to injury) the Marlins have few good options in the minors left. So they felt a move was necessarily to supplement what figures to be a "battery focus" come the June draft.

The departure of Jeffries was interesting since the team was putting Brito on the trade block. Jeffries is a solid hitting 3B, though he may lack power and defensive consistency. Aquino is the major piece as he's a slugger in the making. Many thought he'd replace Chris Davis, but that was before Davis showed no signs of slowing down even in his mid-30's. With Russell Parrott also on the roster and Chet Doyle emerging, Aquino was deemed unneeded.

Rasmussen looks to be a finesse lefty. He throws two kinds of fastballs, a four-seamer and a sinker, along with a curve and a change. He's still trying to put it all together and gain mental maturity in the process. The upside is there, but there's some risk as well. Clay Huff had a similar profile and looked like a bust but was a late bloomer that got better after losing velocity and movement on his pitches.

As far as the Stan Brito saga, the Marlins were interested in dealing him for a catcher prospect...but there are none around that seemed interesting. They are all either exceptionally raw or "top prospects" at the position simply because they are one of the few under 25 in the league. Pitching would be interesting as well, but the team felt uncomfortable there, too. As it is, the team will likely keep Brito and hope for the best finances-wise.

Luis Heredia might have played his way off the block. He's "looking like too good of a combo with Boeve", as one official put it. While Heredia is still technically on the trade block (as is Brito), it's looking like the Marlins will need to be "wowed" in order to want to move.

We really didn't think the pitching would struggle to this level. To be more specific the bullpen has been the worst in baseball. If it isn't rectified soon we'll start making changes. It's really enticing to make that early call up to our supplemental draft pick, Peter Rangel. We'll monitor him closely and hope he's ready soon.

To state a positive: the offense has been on fire. We aren't hitting many out of the park but we're finding gaps and scoring runs. It's hard not to be excited with their production and we see guys like Wil Myers and Cory Spangenberg as pieces to build around.

Just had the toughest time with the Rockies. The pitching has been so-so at best and injuries have just derailed me. Here are my injuries:

DJ lemahue- 1-2 months with torn finger ligament
Nolan Arenado- 2-3 months with broken shin
Jose Reyes-2-3 weeks with inflamed hip
Carlos Gonzales- 2-3 weeks with hamstring issue.

Now I am 33-30 but I started off at 20-10 before these injuries struck. Going to be a grind until the end. Have absolutely zero power in the lineup. Blackmon has been solid but he is my #3 hitter which shouldn't be😔

Mid-May is a weird time to project the rest of the season, but, hey, I guess I just thought of trying it and...soo...here it is.

Some info:

1.7OPS is OPS but with OBP weight at 1.7x the value to better represent OBP's importance to run production.

FIP- and ERA- are how much below (better) the pitcher's stats are to the league average, taking into account park factor (I use Fangraphs' number).

Projections are Marcel inspired, which is made by Tom Tango. I didn't duplicate his process exactly, but the overall is inspired by his work.

There's some "fudge" or "guessing" due to carryover stats situation. That makes FIP, OBP, SLG, not accurate as presented in game. League Averages are estimated as well due to not having them in the game explicitly. That impacts ERA- and FIP- directly and the scaling for 1.7OPS (the color coding for what's average, etc), but does consider how the franchise is playing now (pitcher-advantaged).

Marcel includes an aging factor. I used it to estimate/account for the player's current development. For example, Chris Davis, despite being 35, is barely dropping in his offense. So he was considered "30", just over the benchmark age of 29.

ERA-, FIP-, and 1.7OPS are color coded to easier see what's good or bad:

Dark Red = Ugh
Orange = Dubious
Yellowish Orange = Fringe
Yellow = Meh
Greenish Yellow = Notch Above Average
Green = Good
Dark Green = I'm Too Good For This League

Notes: Overall, the projections are suggesting the Marlins have played over their heads in terms of what is expected. That's not too surprising considering that the team is 34-7 right now and pretty much everyone is playing out of this world right now.

The pitching in particularly could be due for some tougher going. Of course, the bullpen is filled with mostly rookies/inexperienced pitchers, so it's harder to project how they'll do. One thing the projections are sure of: Boeve is insane, even if he does "slow down".

As a side note: Kevin Yaeger's ERA vs FIP is ridiculous. He's either been incredibly unlucky or is doing something very wrong.

Offensively, the projections aren't sure what to do with Chris Taylor (neither am I) after his terrible 5/6 of the season last year. On the plus side, Tommy Cruz should get better. He doesn't have a home run yet. He's not a power threat, but he pokes a few out usually.

On the bench, the Marlins have to hope Parrott does come around. He plays vs LHP and whenever Davis needs time off, so he's gets a decent about of PAs. Arturo Gonzalez holding steady would be good as he comes in for Harper vs LHP and to give days off.

Baez' projected performance would be nothing short of a giant disappointment. The Marlins would have some serious buyer's remorse if that's how it plays out for him.

In general, it seems plausible. The lineup is driven by Davis, Harper, Winter - no surprise there - with average or better contributions from everyone else. Pretty much the team m.o. It's the pitching that's been crazy. Time will tell if it holds up. Some evidence it might not has showed up in the most recent trip through the rotation, despite the fact the team won the games anyway. Maybe it won't matter after all.

That pitching regression might be starting as Luis Heredia, right after being declared a "good combo with Boeve", promptly has a poor outing.

Of course, no one had much on the ball. Heredia gave up 5 runs in 6 innings, but escaped with a no-decision as the Marlins put 3 across in the bottom of the 6th on the strength of a 2-run triple by Cruz. Two of those runs on Heredia were inherited runners that scored thanks to an ineffective Curtis Anders.

That lead held until the 8th when the Nats brought in Votto to pinch hit and Mattingly countered by bringing Hessman out for the lefty-lefty matchup. Problem there is Hessman's bad luck continued. First pitch Hessman threw was a cement mixer slider that got bang into right-center for a double that tied the game. Thanks a lot.

Marlins grab the lead in the top 9th when Valentin hit a PH double and Taylor delivered him home with a single and the 7-6 lead. Yaeger pitched the bottom half easily for his 14th save and the Marlins find a way once more, running their streak to 9 wins.

One non-factor in the game was Stan Brito, but not by his doing. The Nationals pitched to him once (he made an out) and was walked the next four times he came to the plate, twice intentionally.

Normally I don't complain, but I just had the most frustrating game I've ever played in MLB The Show, and just had to vent a little. I'm playing a game near the end of the season as the Tigers. It's a divisional game against Cleveland, who's leading the division by just 1.5 games. We lose 9-1. Now, I don't mind losing. I expect to at times. But it's how I lost, why I lost, that frustrated me the most.

I swear, it seemed like the game was scripted to be a Cleveland win. Trevor Bauer was pitching, and he could not throw balls. A pitch wouldn't even be touching the strike zone and would be called a strike. The only pitches called balls were pitch outs, or ones that were half a foot off the plate or something. You know, clear balls. Then, with Sanchez pitching for me, I could not get a strike called at all. The only strikes were meat pitches right down the middle. Anything that touched the edge of the strike zone at all was called a ball. It was the worst I've ever experienced in this game.

So I was serving up hard hit balls all game since I couldn't risk throwing anything near the corners. And I had to swing at every pitch or I was striking out. Bauer completed the game throwing only 74 pitches. The only blemish was a Castellanos homerun in the fifth inning off a lucky pitch. I just went up there with a power swing on the first pitch that just barely cleared the wall.

Anyway, now that I have that off my chest, I must say I love the franchise mode in this game. My Tigers are doing well, and we have the front-runner for rookie of the year in pitcher Michael Fulmer who has been outstanding, even with a couple bad outings. And we're in it because of our pitching, which is near the top of the league in all categories, even if our offense is only about middle of the table, which is surprising (unless you realize that we've had both Martinez's, Cabrera, and Upton all miss time with injuries). We've had solid contributions from the outfield bats in our minor league system, most notably Steven Moya (who was hitting .282/.347/.427 with 9 homeruns and 32 rbi's). It was hard to send him down, but I didn't want him just riding the bench when he could be continuing to rake in triple-A and progressing more.

Just finished up April 2016 as the Padres at 10-15. We are 2nd last in BA at .242. Yangervis Solarte is top ten in BA leaders at .343 We traded C Derek Norris to the 'interested' Cardinals for RP Jordan Walden and C Carson Kelly. Also traded one of our top prospects RF Jabari Blash for RP Ryan Cook of the Mariners who had Cook on the block. Myers, Upton Jr are both out for a couple weeks and A potential prospect CF Manuel Margot is 'Angry' because we added him to the 40 man roster and he hit .200 and is now back in AAA but expects to be up in the Big Show but we want to wait until he is ready to really lead us off and likely will not see any time in the bigs this year until september. Bad management could stunt the growth of our only A prospect. LOL. more to come.

Some how we are back in first place here at the AS break. It has not been easy though. We are 27-15 since the end of May. 55-34 overall. We have a 3 game lead over the Twins. Tied with the Cubs for the most wins. Atlanta has the worst record at 33-55. We have been relatively injury free these last few years. Everyone in the minors seems to get hurt. But the Majors has been fine. Well that all changed. Kris Medlen went down with a torn Hamstring on June 12th. Could be out for another month. 5 days later Jarrod Dyson went down with a fractured wrist. He should be back around the trade deadline. A week later Jackson Yates hit the DL with a shoulder injury. He is already back after missing 17 games. 5 days after he went down Raul Mondesi got added to the list with a broken shin. He is out until mid August at least and could be out well into September. 2 days after that Jorge Bonifacio hurt his knee and joined the DL. He was up replacing Yates. He is out for no more than another week. Not sure if he stays in the Majors or not.

The offense came back down to earth a bit with all the injuries. Still playing very good though. 4.5 runs per game since June 1st. We are 1st in AVG (.275), 2nd in OBP (.346), 1st in SLG (.439), 2nd in Runs (441), 4th in 2B (162), 4th in 3B (23), 4th in HR (104), 1st in SB% (.789), 5th in BB (328), and 2nd in Strikeouts (590). Alex Gordon isnt hitting as well as he had been. But still the best player on the team by far. He is hitting .311/.401/.575 with 20 HR, 19 2B and 54 RBI. He hasnt hit more than 20 HR since 2011 and the season is barely half over. The Royals record is 36. He is on pace to hit that exactly. He has a 4.45 WAR (2nd in AL, 4th in MLB). His career high is 5.42 in 2011. Salvador Perez has been our next best hitter. .292/.357/.491 with 18 HR and 58 RBI. He has already passed his 2018 HR total of 17 and should pass his career high of 21. Lorenzo Cain is another guy that has already passed his HR totals from last year. He has 12 with a .279/.332/.465 line. His career high in HR is 16. Has a chance to beat that. Kendrys Morales like Gordon has cooled off a bit. But still hitting .305 with a .381 OBP (highest of career) and a .462 SLG. Has 12 HR and leads the team with 59 RBI. Jackson Yates if he hadnt missed those 17 games would be up there as one of our top guys. Still kind of is really. .292/.367/.521 with 12 HR and 49 RBI. Those numbers over 162 games would be 192 Hits, 113 Runs, 30 HR, 43 2B, 7 3B, 126 RBI. The most surprising player so far has been Alcides Escobar. He is hitting .325/.381/.454 in 183 at bats. And its s good thing since Mondesi is out for a bit. Adam Lind is has a pretty good line at .285/.374/.379. But only has 4 HR after having 25 last year. Before his injury Mondesi was hitting .257/.306/.398 with 4 HR and pretty much perfect defense. Jarrod Dyson was hitting .247/.307/.328 before his injury. His replacement Jorge Bonifacio hit.333/.435/.556 with a HR in 18 at bats before he got hurt. Bubba Starling cam up to replace him and is hitting .140/.159/.256 with a HR. He had a hit in each of his first 5 games but is now 1 for his last 22. Cheslor Cuthbert was called up when Modnesi went down. He is hitting .333/.333/.667 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 27 at bats. Balbino hasnt had much playing time. Been okay when given the chance though. .267/.367/.346 in 26 at bats.

Overall I think we okay. We will get healthy at some point and our depth has been good for the most part. The best offense we have had in a very long time for sure.

On the pitching side things have been pretty much the same since May. We have allowed 3.6 runs per game since June 1st. Which is exactly how we did in May. We are now 11th in ERA at 3.71. Mike Minor has lead the way with a 3.28 ERA in 123.1 IP. Right behind him is Dany Duffy with a 3.41 ERA in 108.1 and the hiherst K/9 of his career at 8.72. Yordano Ventura has put up a 2.57 ERA over his last 8 starts (49 IP). On the year he is at 4.18 in 103.1 IP. Jordan Lyles has had a 3.10 ERA in his last 9 starts (58 IP). He is at 4.05 for the year with 106.2 IP. Kris Medlen only made 3 starts in June before getting hurt. He gave up 3 runs in 14 IP (0.1 IP in the game he got hurt). For the season he has a 2.43 ERA in 55.2 IP. Luke Farrell was called up to replace him. He went 2-1 with a 5.93 ERA in 27.1 IP (5 starts). His first 3 games he was pretty damn good. 3 ER in 5.2 IP in his debut. 7.1 IP with 1 ER in his 2nd start. Followed that up with 7 innings and 2 ER. But fell apart after that. 6 ER in 3 IP, and 6 ER in 4.1 IP. Wade Davis has started to look like himself again. ERA is down to 2.81 with a 0.94 WHIP in 41.2 IP. Kelvin Herrera has a 2.27 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 35.2 IP. Soria has a 3.03 ERA in 38.2 IP and JP Howell is at 3.32 in 38 IP. Dillon Gee and Ian Kennedy havent been good at all. 4.80 ERA for Gee and 5.76 for Kennedy. We just called up David Huff after sending down Farrell. He made his first appearance in a major league game since 2015 and went 1 innings with a walk and strikeout.

Rotation is doing well. We can probably go 4 man if we have to until Medlen gets back. A lot of off days coming up. Ashe Russell and Nolan Watson are both in AAA playing very well. If we need a 5th it will probably be one of them.

As for the guys in AAA. Ashe Russell replaced Kyle Zimmer after he broke his arm in the beginning of June. In 8 games he is 4-4 with a 2.75 ERA and 1.32 WHIP 52.1 IP. When he was promoted he had a 1.95 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 64.2 IP in AA. Nolan Watson followed him when Farrell was called up to the majors. In 6 starts he has a 2.97 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 33.1 IP. Had had gotten his ERA down to 3.31 in 73.1 IP in AA before being promoted. Luke Farrell has a 2.59 ERA in 76.1 IP. Brooks Pounders at 3.13 in 100.2 IP and Alec Mills has an ERA of 2.92 in 64.2 IP. Rolando Cardona was promoted to AAA after an injury. He is hitting .301/.405/.437 in 103 at bats.

In AA, Terrance Gore is hiting .287/.333/.371. Has missed some time with injuries. Chase Vallot has broken out of a long slump to start the season. He is now hitting .277/.373/.460 with 13 HR. Todd Fisk has a 2.81 ERA in 32 IP. And Foster Griffin has a 1.93 ERA in 56 IP our of the pen.

NL won the AS game 6-4.

First 9 games after the break are on the road. Then 19 of 30 at home. We dont got more than 10 games without a day off between now and the middle of August so players should be well rested and the guys that are hurt arent missing extra games. As long as everything works like it has the last couple months we should be looking at our 5th straight playoff appearance.

Just had a totally weird game.

My Marlins made 5 errors.

Fortunately, the good Clay Huff showed up in spades. He induced 6 double plays out of the Nats.

Really, really strange. Probably could have been six errors and seven double plays. Davis made a bad throw that was scored a hit and the Nats narrowly avoided a double play (which would have been a weird 2-5-3 DP).

Ended up winning 4-2 so Marlins streak hits 10 now.

Marlins, Indians Swap Prospects
At Eve of Draft

The Marlins continue looking to stock some more arms on the farm, and to that end they completed a prospect swap, trading infield prospect Neil Snell for SP prospect Rich Santiago.

Both kids are of similar age, 20 for Snell and 21 for Santiago, and both are along in their progress, perhaps being ready in the next year or so.

The Marlins do want more infield prospects, but with Javier Baez at 2B, the Marlins don't figure on bringing in a challenger for the position for a while (ideally, anyway...). Chris Taylor should hold up a few more years and Brito is young as is Parrott. Plus, Chris Davis seems ageless. Campos is also still around along with Valentin...who's not wonderful, but he's ready.

The Marlins will be without their first round pick due to compensation, and will be at the bottom of the draft in the normal order, so trading for and swapping prospects will likely be what the team will have to try.
