Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

I accidentally posted my first update on the The Show 16 Franchise thread, but I have 17, so I'll recap here a bit...

I'm playing as the Mariners. I don't have a ton of time to actually play the game, plus I really like the sim/coaching aspects, so what I do is quick manage every game. I will jump in to hit at important points...down by a run or two late in the game, big hitter up with bases loaded, or sometimes I'll hit the first inning just to try to get us off to a good start. But most games are quick manage all the way through.

Season 1 I started with a handful of trades....with the addition of Dee Gordon, I wanted to move Cano for a guy who hits well against both R and L, and Cain at CF fit the bill. So I started with these two trades:

Motter to Cubs for Schwarber and Underwood
Cano and Underwood to Mil for Cain
Also traded Ruiz for Darwin Barney (planning to give Schwarber some games at C makes Ruiz expendable, and I needed a middle IF on the bench.

    During the season I traded:
Hernandez and Haniger to Philly for Hoskins and Eickoff
Iwakuma and Kiefhekher to Was for Roard
Nicasio and Niewenhuis to KCR for Maurer

The first season went poorly. Initially I had hoped for a playoff club, but we floated around .500 all season. With 6 weeks or so to go, Cain, who had proven to be our best player by far and was among league leaders in avg, HR, steals, and others, went down for the rest of the season. At that point I changed my goal to just be at least .500...and fell short. We ended up 80-82.

Cain was my best player, .312 27 HR 39 SB in 449 AB
Seager also had a great season, .278 with 38 HR
Gordon was great with .292 and league leading 115 SB

After that, everyone sucked. Cruz was terrible for the first half, batting around .220 and 5th on the TEAM in HR when he probably should have been top 5 in the league. He turned things around but still failed to get even 30 HR, ended with 28 and .258.

Segura hit .275, Gamel .267, but everyone else was .250 or below...Zunino really sucked it up, .160 with just 7 HR in half the season. Supposed to be my #1 catcher. Healy, Hoskins, and Schwarber all showed a little bit of power but couldn't hit over .250.

so it's on to the offseason, where I had to learn how to do contracts and all that...that was a learning experience for sure, but I think I did all right! One thing I will remember for the future is to overpay anyone on the big club to make sure their morale is up.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

So it's on to season 2, and after a couple preseason acquisitions, I have much higher hopes. I signed JD Martinez as a FA, then made these trades:
Zunino and Aplin to Astros for Gattis, Hauschild and Sipp
JD Martinez, Segura, and Gamel to LAD for C.Seager, C.Taylor, and Scavuzzo
Erasmo Ramirez, Muno to Mil for Jimmy Nelson
Hague to NYY for Estrada (just needed a minor league SS and had tons of 1b)
Evan White to Tor for Urena, Browning (all minor leaguers)

So on we go! Game 1, Dyson comes in to pinch run in the 9th inning for Nelson Cruz and is the possible winning run. He doesn't end up scoring, and we go extra innings now without Nellie Cruz and his big bat. But in the 15th inning, Dyson of all people ends it with a solo shot!

We then go on a quick manage skid, losing 5 straight, but follow that up with I think 6 or 7 wins in a row and have now pulled a couple games ahead of .500 around 15 games into the season.

I'm LOVING this lineup, but it still seems like they're really underperforming. Cain started the season hurt but has been back a couple games. Gattis has only 3 HR, but they all came in the same game. Chris Taylor is a great addition, I've got him mostly playing CF and move Cain to LF or RF depending who else is playing, but Taylor will also give me a backup at 2B or SS when those guys need a rest.

my hitting lineup looks something like this:
      2B Gordon
      RF Cain
      SS C.Seager
      DH Cruz
      3B K.Seager
      C Schwarber/Gattis
      CF Taylor
      1B Hoskins/Healy
      LF Heredia/Valencia

I also have Darwin Barney for middle infield, and Jarrod Dyson who's sort of battling with Heredia for that last OF spot in the bigs...with everyone healthy, one of them needs to be in AAA. Real life I lean towards Heredia and his defense...the Show I lean towards Dyson and his speed.

I also have this interesting guy Johnson in AAA right now, but he's a whopping 98 vs lefties! I just pulled him up and in one pinch hit AB he homered...I'm curious about him at least, but there's not a ton of room on the corners.

The one trade I'm still considering is to pick up a nice big ace. I've got my sights set on Noah Syndergaard, and he would cost me Ryon Healy, my top prospect Kyle Lewis, and Eickhoff who's in my starting rotation...that seems like a lot to give up but Noah is elite. Healy I really am interested in seeing how he does as a real life Mariners fan, but as for as my MLB the Show franchise, he's totally expendable...even without him I can platoon Hoskins and Valencia at 1B and they're both solid....with Healy in, I have to struggle to find ways to use Valencia and his 90 contact vs lefties, which is a waste on the bench. So I'm still mulling that one over, what do you guys think, bring in Thor?

I wrote down a list of other pitchers I'm considering, most of whom would cost me Healy plus...
      Odorizzi
      A.Sanchez
      D.Salazar
      Keuchel
      Teheran
      Nola
      Bundy

All of these guys are 85-87 OV, B potential, 30 or under. Would love to hear if any of you guys have thoughts on my best move. My current rotation is
      Paxton
      Leake
      J.Nelson
      Roark
      Eickhoff

Paxton is the clear ace, but the other 4 are all relatively equal, depending on the morale at a given time.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

I'm now well into the 2nd season and going strong at 47-30. A bit ago I pulled the trigger on the Thor deal, getting Syndergaard and a minor leaguer for Healy, Eickhoff, and Lewis.

Noah has done poorly in probably 5 games so far. Not going to judge too early. Healy hasn't particularly been missed as Valencia has been playing great, batting over .350 I think.

The real questions will be answered over the next couple seasons when we see how Lewis and Healy develop. As for Syndergaard, next season I hope he'll be happier when he gets a better contract.

I also made another major deal, one that wasn't even on my radar and it was tough to do but I'm confident it was the right decision...Nelson Cruz is my favorite player, but after hitting a disappointing .250 something with less than 30 homers last season, this season he was even doing considerably worse! At the time of the trade he was hitting around .220 with 8 measly HR. His war was negative! So I moved him for a former Mariner we never should have moved, Mark Trumbo. Nelson is 5 years older, twice as expensive, and yet the only area he seems to have any edge on trumbo is contact, which doesn't mean much when you're hitting .220. Trumbo is over .270 and 2nd in the league in HR. I feel he's a better solution both now and in the future, based on what we know about how the show really destroys the ratings of any player over 35.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

It was crunch time down the stretch of the regular season, as the Angels led the Mariners by 4 games, and we had a 4 game series against the Angels to finish the season. What that meant is that we still had a chance to win the division, but we had to beat them 4 games in a row, and we did it! 2 of them went extra innings and they were all close. Then in a bit of confusion I thought the season was over, but another game appeared on the schedule...as it turns out, since we were tied, we had to play an extra game in regular season, how bizarre. I won that one too, to finish the season 98-65, 1st in our division.

If 5 games in a row against the Angels wasn't enough, we faced them in the first round of the playoffs, but our confidence was high. We lost the first game but then won 3 in a row to take them out in 4. Then beat Boston in 6, again with at least a little bit of drama as we won the first 3 in a row before dropping 2 (ie the away team won the first 5 games of the series!) But we took them out in 6.

In the world series, we dropped the first two games to the Nationals. But then we spanked out 4 wins in a row to win the World Series in 6!

Trading Cruz to get Trumbo ended up being a great decision! Trumbo finished the season with 52 homers, leading the league. He was nearly up to .300 ba shortly after the trade but a late season slump saw his final ba drop to .275. He also had 10 Trumbo Jumbos in the playoffs. Cruz finished the season pretty strong as I noticed he was on the HR leader board, BUT then he retired after the season! Ouch.

Some other statistical notables for 2018:
Cain hi .329 with just 3 HR, but in only 234 AB (lots of injuries.) He was also our playoff MVP hitting .344. In the first series he was absolutely on fire, I think I had something like 7 or 8 hits in a row with him to start the playoffs. He was up around .600 after the first series before slumping.

The Seager brothers were a great tandem. Cory hit .307 with 6 HR, Kyle was .280 with 37.

I had the top 3 SB leaders, Gordon with 106, Dyson with 93, Cain with 39 (despite playing less than half the season!)

Hoskins, Schwarber, and Paxton, 3 guys I thought would be core guys for years to come, have seen pretty significant DROPS in their ratings instead of improving. Hoping that goes back up as we start the 3rd season rather than continuing a decline.

As far as pitching, despite having Syndergaard and Paxton ahead of him in the rotation, Nelson had by far the best numbers as a pitcher. 13-7, 3.00 era (2nd in the league) and 223 Ks. Syndergaard was pretty good at 12-9 3.34, Paxton was terrible, 11-8 4.92.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

So now I'm just starting the 3rd season, 2019. Not too many major changes.

I did decide to trade Roark (my only losing pitcher last season) for Hendricks. I traded my best reliever in Cook for a similar guy, Cedeno who kills two birds with one stone...he's a lefty, and he's puerto rican, and Edwin Diaz was looking for a buddy. This didn't help much, neither guy saw a morale boost still.

So I went out and picked up one more Puerto Rican, Kike Hernandez for a prospect Blanco. Kike will be a solid utility guy for me. Not in the regular starting lineup but I figure he'll end up playing about half the time as useful as he is.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

I recently began my third season (2019) with my Miami Marlins. I hoped to get in a full season before the release of 18. I just got through April in which I played every game. Now I'll start my play one sim three game plan. I wont get through this season but I'll enjoy playing with these guys for a bit more. I am thinking about rolling with them in 18 as well although the team will obviously be completely different.

Who is a good team to start a franchise with to keep me going till I can get my hands on 18? I was thinking of the Padres, Reds or Pirates. I love going my Jays but it’s fun to try another team for once and maybe in the NL as well.

I started one recently with the Mets, using an updated roster. They made some interesting moves picking up Todd Frazier and Adrian Gonzalez. The only downside is the pen is very right handed.

Yeah I was thinking of them too. Like the thought of crushing balls with Frazier and Cespedes plus they have some good pitching with Thor and DeGrom and potentially Harvey if he can stay injury free and could look to start Rosario at SS

Need some clarification on what you're looking for here. If you only want to control one player, you can do that easily. It's called Player Lock mode and you can choose it on the Launchpad screen before starting any franchise game. Just like RTTS for the player you choose to control (even with optional Showtime use).

If you want to control your entire team batting, it will take a little more hands-on work. You can fast forward or quick manage during your time in the field from the pause menu in-game. You'd have to do that each half-inning that you want to skip and then back out of the fast-forwarding to take control again.

If you want to control your entire team batting, it will take a little more hands-on work. You can fast forward or quick manage during your time in the field from the pause menu in-game. You'd have to do that each half-inning that you want to skip and then back out of the fast-forwarding to take control again.

                            OVERVIEW
We had a pretty solid month bunthe Nationals had a phenomenal month (22-6) which led to us giving up the lead in the division. I have to coach my self to be patient at the plate but then insee my self late on a lot of fast balls cause I'm anticipating off speed so i don't swing early. My stars are struggling pretty badly I can't seem to get Stanton or Kang going. I don't believe i pitched with Sale in May but he had a terrible month...luckily the rest of the pitching staff has stepped up. Rookie Destin Hood is also stepping up and showing his power off although he is rated pretty low (51 VR and 60 VL)

I will still continue to play in to the release of 18...im now thinking I'll carry this chise over while starting a new one with a different team.

                              Just a quick question

I’m really interested in trying to keep with a franchise thats not with my favourite team I see YouTubers being able to do it and wonder how everyone here does it and stays interested?

Like I’ll start it with another team and be interested for the first couple months of the in game season but then highlights of my Jays will pop up on my phone of FB and I’ll want to go back to a chise with them then I’m left with like 7-8 franchises saved on my PS4.

I was thinking of like watching highlights of the team I’d be playing as and stuff like that.

I usually pick teams that have interesting jerseys and a ballpark with something interesting about it.

The Rockies are an often go to for me when I want a franchise that's not about one of my primary teams. Of course, Coors Field, but I usually go for trying to make them a contact+speed team that hits line drives into that spacious outfield.

My dream line up for them would be 6-7 fast guys and a power bat (that still has decent speed) and more speed on the bench. Haven't yet been able to pull it off.

That's the kind of thing I look for. Keeps me invested in the franchise longer term.
