I accidentally posted my first update on the The Show 16 Franchise thread, but I have 17, so I'll recap here a bit...
I'm playing as the Mariners. I don't have a ton of time to actually play the game, plus I really like the sim/coaching aspects, so what I do is quick manage every game. I will jump in to hit at important points...down by a run or two late in the game, big hitter up with bases loaded, or sometimes I'll hit the first inning just to try to get us off to a good start. But most games are quick manage all the way through.
Season 1 I started with a handful of trades....with the addition of Dee Gordon, I wanted to move Cano for a guy who hits well against both R and L, and Cain at CF fit the bill. So I started with these two trades:
Motter to Cubs for Schwarber and Underwood
Cano and Underwood to Mil for Cain
Also traded Ruiz for Darwin Barney (planning to give Schwarber some games at C makes Ruiz expendable, and I needed a middle IF on the bench.
During the season I traded:
Hernandez and Haniger to Philly for Hoskins and Eickoff
Iwakuma and Kiefhekher to Was for Roard
Nicasio and Niewenhuis to KCR for Maurer
The first season went poorly. Initially I had hoped for a playoff club, but we floated around .500 all season. With 6 weeks or so to go, Cain, who had proven to be our best player by far and was among league leaders in avg, HR, steals, and others, went down for the rest of the season. At that point I changed my goal to just be at least .500...and fell short. We ended up 80-82.
Cain was my best player, .312 27 HR 39 SB in 449 AB
Seager also had a great season, .278 with 38 HR
Gordon was great with .292 and league leading 115 SB
After that, everyone sucked. Cruz was terrible for the first half, batting around .220 and 5th on the TEAM in HR when he probably should have been top 5 in the league. He turned things around but still failed to get even 30 HR, ended with 28 and .258.
Segura hit .275, Gamel .267, but everyone else was .250 or below...Zunino really sucked it up, .160 with just 7 HR in half the season. Supposed to be my #1 catcher. Healy, Hoskins, and Schwarber all showed a little bit of power but couldn't hit over .250.
so it's on to the offseason, where I had to learn how to do contracts and all that...that was a learning experience for sure, but I think I did all right! One thing I will remember for the future is to overpay anyone on the big club to make sure their morale is up.
