Well after starting the season red hot and going 19-7 through the month of April the good times have come to a screeching halt. Once the level of competition went up my offense went cold and I've since gone an embarassing 5-8 in the month of May. Without Nelson Cruz my HR numbers have really taken a nose dive having only hit 11 in the 13 games played in May. I need a power bat in the lineup in a bad way, relying on 3 singles to score 1 run doesn't always work when playing against good pitching and it's become apparent that's my issue now that I'm facing the better teams with better staffs.

2022 End of Season Update

We are now 5x NL East Champs and overcame some tough injuries to finish with the best record in the MLB (93-69). The Nationals and their insane off season spending spree faltered at the end of the season finishing 91-71 and then lost to the New York Mets in the Wildcard game 11-1. Mets ace Amir Garrett has really proven to be one of the best SP's in the NL. He's posted a career 3.47 ERA with the Mets and over his past two seasons he's posted a total ERA ~2.85 with 33 wins to only 11 losses.

How'd we win the NL East?
Carlos Correa led the offensive charge winning the NL batting title (.349) while leading the team in most offensive categories (33 HR 103 RBI 1.00+ OPS). He was beat out by WAS 1B Freddie Freeman for NL MVP by a slim margin as Freeman had a really great year after coming over from Detroit, where he also won an MVP.

There was a bit of a change with our team makeup as we went from a power slugging team to a more balanced offense. We were 2nd in runs scored but instead of being the typically league leader in HR (3 times in first 5 seasons) we finished in the middle of the pack in HR. We finished 5th in batting average and 2nd in OBP and had a good bit of speed on the base paths. It didn't translate to an elite number of SB's (9th in MLB) but it helped get those extra runs in.

Bryce Harper had a solid season but it really appears he's slowing down which kills me. He still hit over .300 with 25 HR but he's no longer the MVP caliber player he was for the first 5 seasons with Atlanta. He'll hit 30 next season and still has 4 years left on his 10-year max contract. 3B Richard Barnard won NL ROtY going away blasting 24 HR's and hitting .275. As happy as we are for his production it's tough to see former 3B Joey Gallo win AL MVP (54 HR 114 RBI) for the Angels.

Pitching recap:
SP Alex Reyes bounced back and won his 2nd Cy Young. He wasn't nearly as dominant as the historical 2020 season but he still won 14 games while leading the NL in IP (203.2) and K's (250). We're hoping we can associate his Cy Young Award with another World Series Championship.

Carlos Martinez is 30 years old, in the last year of his contract, and after his great season (15-5 3.16 ERA) his stock is surely up. Danny Duffy was a great FA pickup after Drew Pomeranz went down with injury. Duffy posted a 2.91 ERA in 65 innings. Guy Hogsett seems to improve every season and he led all Atlanta qualified starters in ERA (2.93) and finally began to flash some strike out ability. He went from 6.24 -> 6.23 -> 8.19. Our #5 Michael Kopech did poor enough to get demoted to bullpen duties and is going to transition to RP in the off season. Kurt Lewers filled in nicely posting a 2.94 ERA in 119.1 IP this season. He doesn't have much of a ceiling but he projects as a possible #5 SP or spot starter/long reliever. He's extremely good at keeping the ball down and forcing ground balls.

Our bullpen had their ups and downs. Jake Reed established himself as the most reliable bullpen arm with Tanner Scott coming in at runner up for that title. Our young closer Jimmie Peters is either lights out or he gets rocked. His five BSV this season were all huge innings that resulted in L's. He managed a 4.04 ERA despite being injured a few months and posted 29 saves. The capability of being a very good bullpen is there but we'll see what happens in the postseason.

Good amount of detail without it feeling rushed on the one hand or overwhelming on the other.

Too bad this game still struggles with late career regression. As a 30-year-old, Bryce Harper should not be at risk of declining.

Thanks as that's what I am for.

Maybe Harper has some shot at recouping some of the lost skill but I seriously doubt it. Would love to still get him to 500 HR over the duration of this franchise if I can. I'd like to see injuries have more of an impact on regression. You could directly tie a seriously knee injury to some speed loss or BR agg loss.

On Hogsett: I'm guessing somebody working on the game has the last name because it's definitely unique.

2022 NLDS update:

Game 1: Braves win 7-3

The Mets went up 3-0 in the 3rd inning off Cy Young winner Alex Reyes but he would settle down and throw 6 strong innings and get the win. The Braves plated a run in the 3rd and then went off for 4 runs in the 4th. The big blow was a NL ROtY Richard Barnard no doubt 2-run HR to RF on a hung slider. With the score 5-3 the Braves bullpen would do a great job at shutting the door. Tanner Scott, Jake Reed, and Dellin Betances would each throw a scoreless frame in relief. Carlos Correa blasted a 2-run HR in the 7th to extend the lead to 7-3.

Atlanta will put Carlos Martinez on the mound for Game 2 against a starter not named Amir Garrett for the Mets. Garrett will go game #3 vs Danny Duffy in a battle of the lefties.

NLDS Update:

Braves sweep Mets 3-0 (7-3, 5-3, 5-2)

When the Mets took down the Nationals it made the road to the NLCS fairly easy as we simply have a better team all-around. Carlos Martinez and Danny Duffy pitched well in their respective starts and the offense pushed across enough runs to give the bullpen a lead they could run with.

In the NLCS, the tables are about to turn. The opponent will be the San Francisco Giants who have the #1 ranked team based on talent. They played in a very tough NL West where 4 teams went .500 or better. The Giants swept the Cubs 3-0 and rolled to the NLCS only allowing 2 runs in the NLDS.

Here's the Giants starting lineup:

This series looks like it's going to be one heck of a battle. I get the luxury of home field advantage so let's hope we can start of things well in Atlanta.

The Carter trade gave us pitching depth and Cotten is 5-1, 2.94 in AAA at the moment. Thanks to a power outage and seeing the Angels sweep me at home trimming my division lead to 0.5 game, even though I'm only 40 games into the season, I made some deals. The White Sox are so far out of it already it's laughable (8-32) and were looking to shop anyone of value to start the rebuild. I sent them 2 A prospects and a high C for Jose Abreu and David Robertson. Abreu has 1 more year of control but Robertson is a complete rental. In a seperate move I dealt Jean Segura back to Arizona, they had a need at SS and are actually in a position to compete. They offered me a low A 1B prospect who was blocked by Goldschmidt so I jumped on it. So in the end I lost Segura, 2 A's and a C for Abreu, Robertson and an A prospect, I consider that a complete win. First game post trade and Abreu went 1/4 with 3 K's lol, Robertson hasn't made his debut yet but we were able to stop the current 6 game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over deGrom and the Mets.

If I can't get any power now then there's nothing else I can do. When Nelson Cruz returns in a month or two then I'll have a really healthy power hitting team, assuming nobody else has dropped between now and then.

2022 NLCS update through the first two games:

SF takes game 1 (3-1) behind a great pitching performance from Luis Severino. We wanted to get through to the pen but it just didn't happen. Severino went 7 strong and then Chapman closed us out in the 9th.

ATL evens the series 1-1 with a 3-2 victory in game 2. I've been talking about Bryce Harper and his power outage but he showed tonight that he still has it. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th he blasted a hung curve ball from Marcus Stroman 473 feet to RF. Betances would blow the lead in the top of the 8th as Andrew Benintendi would deliver a clutch RBI single (also had a solo HR) to tie it up at 2-2. In the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs Harper crushed another no doubt HR to RF to give us a 3-2 lead. Closer Jimmie Peters would allow a couple base runners in the 9th but strand them and get the save. Betances gets the vulture W lol

Overview

We got Dee Gordon back from injury and he has been stellar since he returned to the lineup. We saw our division lead shrink though as of now we are only 1.5 games over the Nationals. Biggest news however is the trade we made for Jonathan Villar who the Brewers had on the trading block. In the trade we sent Marcell Ozuna and SP Jarlin Garcia to the Brewers. Jung Ho Kang continues to send the into the stands and came in second in the HR derby after hitting 9 in the final round while Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians hit 13.

Shortstop Jean Segura hit .298 with 10 HR, while CF Leonys Martin hit .239 with 5 HR. C Mike Zunino hit .214 with 9 HR and RF Mitch Haniger hit .236 with 13 HR & 56 RBI.

LF Ben Gamel hit .299 with 12 HR, and 1B platoon partners Danny Valencia (.235, 4 HR) and Dan Vogelbach (.316, 12 HR) played all year. Valencia will not be brought back for 2019 and Vogelbach will get a chance to play all year at 1B/DH.

Backup OF Guillermo Heredia hit .258 with 2 HR and 12 SB, providing great depth off the bench. utility guys Taylor Motter ( .245, 4 HR, 5 SB) and Shawn O'Malley (.231) played all over the diamond all year.

Backup catcher Geovany Soto will not be brought back, as he replaced Tuffy Gosewhich after signing a one yer deal with the Mariners mid season. He only hit .156 in 23 games (45 ABs). Tyler Marlette made his MLB debut and hit .282 in limited action in September, including 1 HR. I expect Marlette to be the backup C in 2019.

Pitching Stats:

Starting pitcher and ace of the staff James Paxton went 10-10, but had a 2.69 ERA, and a 1.05 WHIP with 196 SO in 214.1 innings. Felix (14-6, 2.62 ERA) and Fransisco Liriano (12-8, 3.22 ERA) were good 2/3 starters. Ariel Miranda solidified himself as the #4 starter (10-8, 3.61 ERA) and Hisashi Iwakuma (7-16, 5.71 ERA) is going to retire, as he doesn't really have a shot at starting in 2019, as guys like Marco Gonzales (2-0, 2.45 ERA in 29.1 innings), Andrew Moore (4.18 ERA) and Sam Gaviglio (2 GS, 13 IP, 2.08 ERA) and ven Rob Whalen, who made his Mariners debut and went 7 innings of 1 run baseball will all be a part of a crowded fight for that 5th spot in the rotation for sure.

As far as the bullpen, you had guys like Evan Marshall, James Pazos, and Dan Altavilla make cases for starting the 2019 season in the bullpen, while guys like Jonathan Aro, Shae Simmons, Ryan Garton, Ryne Harper, and Emilio Pagan likely to start 2019 in AAA as they struggled in the MLB in September.

As for th regulars in the bullpen this season, Mark Rzepczynski, David Phelps, and Erasmo Ramirez all struggled in 2018, and will not be re-signed as they are all going to be free agents in the offseason. Evan Scribner (2.98 ERA), Tony Zych (3.07 ERA), and Nick Vincent (2.34) all solidified roles in next years bullpen, with closer Edwin Diaz (2.42 ERA, 37 SV) looking to shut down the 9th next year as well.

The world series had the Cubs against the Orioles in which the O's won their 4th ever world series. DH Ryan Schimpf and 3B Kris Bryant were the AL and NL postseason MVPs and 2B Jonathan Schoop was WS MVP.

I'm already at opening day 2019 so I'll post a big update for that tonight as well.

1.) C Brock Williams - AA - the 18 year old switch-hitter with an already advanced bat will start his professional career in AA, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in AAA by the end of 2019, with an outside shot at making the MLB roster in 2020.

2.) SP Jose Spanos - AAA - the 20 year old right handed flamethrower has progressed quickly since being drafted in the first round in 2017, and has a chance to eventually make his MLB debut by 2020 at the latest.

3.) SS Alberto Pacheco - AA - the 20-year old will start 2019 at AA, and hopefully all his tools start to come in, as right now all his abilities are very average, with no one thing standing out. He is a possible candidate to fall quickly down this list if he doesn't reach his potential.

4.) CF Kyle Lewis - AAA - the 23 year old will start 2019 at AAA for the first time in his career. He can very easily make his debut at some point in 2019, although he is almost a lock to make the team in 2020, as backup OF Leonys Martin has struggled and is in the last year of his contract.

5.) SP Nick Neidert - AA - the 22 year old will start at AA but could easily get to AAA quickly if he dominates, and someone struggles.

6.) SP Sam Carlson - AA - only 20 years old, Carlson has a lot of time to master AA before moving to AAA to hone his skills and eventually make it to Seattle.

7.) Robert Francis - AAA - The 21-year old twin brothers will start 2019 in AAA as backup OFers, and will likely just hope to get everyday playing time inn 2019, which might mean a call back to AA for them. Robert has the better hitting out of the two

8.) Douglas Francis - AAA - The 21-year old twin brothers will start 2019 in AAA as backup OFers, and will likely just hope to get everyday playing time inn 2019, which might mean a call back to AA for them. Douglas has the better vision and can put together more quality at bats between the two.

9.) 3B Joe Rizzo - AA - after struggling at AA in 2018, Rizzo will hope to right the ship and eventually get to AAA. He is only 21, so he still has a lot f chances to impress.

10.) Andrew Moore - AAA - after struggling in his callup last September, the 24-year old Moore will hope that someone struggles in the rotation and he can take their spot and help the MLB team. At the very least, he will get some more starts in September.

11.) 1B Evan White - MLB - the 23 year old gold glove candidate will get the chance to make his MLB debut on opening day in 2019. After Nelson Cruz retired, the DH spot was opened for Vogelbach, who impressed in 2017 and will get to play everyday without worrying about improving his fielding, which opened up 1B for Evan White, who absolutely raked in AA in 2018 and will hopefully continue that into 2019 at the MLB level. If he struggles with the bat, a send own to AAA is not out of the question.

12.) SS/2B/3B Xavier Richardson - AA - the 19 year old speedster with great base running instincts will get the chance to play all over the infield at AA, and hopefully his hitting can catch up with his fielding.

13.) SP Max Povse - AAA - the 6'8 right handed Povse will look to eventually make his MLB debut in his age-25 season. It's not out of reach for him to do just that by the end of 2019.

14.) SP Rob Whalen - AAA - After making one start for the Mariners in 2018 and going 7 innings, giving up 1 run, he is ready to play in Seattle, however, the re-signing of Drew Smyly, who has yet to make his Mariners debut and hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2016 with the Rays, sort of blocked him, so the chance to be a MLB regular just became a little farther away. However, the 25 year old needs to continue to impress at AAA and in the MLB later this year at some point to continue to have a shot at becoming a major league starter.

15.) SS/2B Bryson Brigman - AA - the 23 year old spent most of 2018 going up and down between A and AA but this year he'll get the chance to play everyday at both SS and 2B in AA this year.

16.) Dan Altavilla - AAA - the 26 year old is in his last year as a Mariners top prospect, meaning this year is make or break for him. After pitching u19.2 innings over the last three years at the MLB level, Altavilla will have to dominate at AAA this season to earn a call up at some point, and then impress in Seattle to stayon the depth chart and avoid becoming a career minor leaguer.

17.) Chase De Jong - AAA - the 25 year old has yet to make his MLB debut, but that could easily change in 2019 if he dominates AAA hitting. At worst, he doesn't, and makes a probable transition into the bullpen and tries to become a long reliever or nice bullpen piece in the majors.

18.) C Tyler Marlette - MLB - the 26 year old looks to have just hit his peak in his last year of eligibility as a prospect, offensive-minded backup. He will look to impress at the plate to keep his job throughout the year, and provide at least average and not terrible defense.

19.) OF Braden Bishop - AA - 25 years old and stuck at AA is a testament to the Mariners depth in the outfield, and Bishop will continue to try and prove he can be a capable backup OFer or platoon guy in the MLB.

20.) RP Thyago Viera - AA - like Bishop, the 25 year old flame thrower is still closing at AA, which isn't a good look. However, he could very easily jump to AAA quickly if he succeeds and finish 2019 in AAA.

21.) OF Luis Liberato - AA - the glove-first 23 year old OFer will look to continue to develop with the bat, in the hopes of becoming a good starting OF at some point in his future.

22.) SP Chuck Rogers - A - the 19 year old will spend all of 2019 at A and will look to jump to AA in 2020.

23.) LF/RF Luis Martinez - AAA - the 19 year old progressed a lot in 2018, so he will be skipping AA entirely and will start 2019 in AAA playing both corner OF spots. He has a legit chance of becoming a all around good outfielder, although his defense leaves a little to be desired.

24.) UTL Charlie Trotter - AAA - the 21 year old speedster will also completely skip AA and start 2019 in AAA, although his ability to play everywhere but 1B, SS and C will help him moving forward.

25.) RP Reggie Reeves - the 22 year old will start his pro career in A, but could end 2019 in AA if he progresses.

26.) SP Don Fisler - A - the 20 year old will likely spend all of 2019 in A and get a shot to start 2020 in AA.

27.) C John Peterson - A - the 20 year old will need to improve his bat before he moves up to AA.

28.) SP Charlie Hilton - AA - the 23 year old will start his pro career in AA and start every 5th day. If he doesn't completely bomb it, he could move up the depth chart quickly.

I'm in 2022 if that's any indication of how much I've enjoyed this franchise. Easily the longest I've ever stuck with one franchise in MLB.



Make it what you want. I wanted to make sure I didn't get a team full of young guys that I could easily build into a super team. I gave myself 6 picks (3 position guys and 3 pitchers) + Michael Kopech in the 7th round.

I allowed my picks to be 3 A POT guys and 3 B POT guys.

Won the NL East 4 years straight and in season 5 I finally didn't make the playoffs and in year #6 I'm a borderline playoff team and my team is starting to have some turnover and my talent is no longer the best in the league.

And if anyone has been reading...Michael Kopech isn't cutting it as a SP in the MLB so he's going to transition to RP.

NLCS update: lost game 3 to the Giants 7-6. I was up 6-1 in the 8th and the bullpen imploded. Danny Duffy threw 7 amazing innings then Betances didn't get any of the 3 guys he faced out. Tanner Scott entered and was just as bad. We had a chance to get out of the inning with a 6-5 lead but 3B Richard Barnard couldn't complete the diving play as his throw pulled the 1B off the bag letting a run score.

Bottom of the 9th we bring in Jake Reed and Aaron Judge hit a mammoth bomb to right center on a low and away fastball. Walk off city, San Francisco celebrates their first home game of the series in dramatic fashion.

Game #4 is Guy Hogsett vs Ariel Miranda. Miranda actually was with Atlanta for a few seasons but never cracked the rotation. He's become a solid arm for the Giants and will have a chip on his shoulder in this one.

In early June, I traded Fransisco Liriano, who had struggled throughout the first two months of the season. I traded him to San Diego, who is desperate for anyone to eat innings for them, dfor a 30-year old reliever whoo has never made the MLB and is basically irrelevant lol. Sam Gaviglio will be called up to take the LR spot in the pen, as he did great last year in September being used primarily out of the pen. He could make a move to the rotation if Smyly or Miranda struggle/get hurt.

Cano and Seager have both been injured this season, with Cano supposed to miss about 2 weeks and Seager will be out a total for two months. Taylor Motter and Shawn O'Malley have filled in nicely at 2B/3B and I have called up RP Dan Altavilla (who has been amazing) and OF Andrew Aplin to play sometimes against RHP until Cano comes back, then he'll go back to AAA most likely.

Dan Vogelbach and Evan White have both been really great, along with Ben Gamel and Jean Segura atop the lineup.

Paxton and Felix have been great, and Marco Gonzales has been a good #3, while Miranda and Smyly have been average.

Diaz, Altavilla and Scribner (who all have not allowed a run so far!) have all been great in the pen, while Zych, Pagan, and Vincent have struggled early. I'm still not sure if I want to bring Vincent back next year, as he's struggled in the setup role in 2019. He might be brought back in a low-leverage role, but I might just let him walk to let younger guys come up and see who sticks in 2020.

Also, our top prospect, 18-year old C Brock Williams has already moved up to AAA after mashing AA pitching. He led AA in HRs, RBIs, 2Bs, and AVG. He will likely be added to the 40-man roster in 2020 and have a shot at making the MLB roster if he does well in spring training.

We are currently 31-25, 2nd in the ALW, and we are currently just out of a WC spot.
