    Houston Astros 2017 All-Star Break (61-29)

I have reached the All-Star break in my franchise and the team is doing amazing, we hit a bit of a rough patch the last week or so before the break going 2-5 but overall it is the first real slump the team has had as our bottom of the rotation and bullpen have struggled.

    All-Star Events:

Matt Carpenter won the Home Run Derby with 11 dingers in the final round beating Joey Votto who had 9.

    All-Star Game Rosters:
    Spoiler

The All-Star game was a thriller going 11 innings and ending with a walk off 3 run bomb from Giancarlo Stanton, final score 9-8 as the AL blew 2 leads, in the 9th inning and in the 11th. Stanton was named MVP.

Finally I forgot about Paulino's suspension in real life so as of the end of the All-Star break I am placing Paulino in A for the rest of the season. McHugh will be making his MLB debut after the All-Star break.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

So I am about to go into July, but wanted to give a quick awesome roster update.

After two really bad outings, the first one putting his ERA over 6.00 and the last start ballooning his ERA to just under 7.00 (don't ask, I suck with him and I'm playing on HoF lol), I moved Gallardo to the bullpen, and recalled...Christian Bergman. The 28 year old former Rockies pitcher came up (we sent down Espinosa, who was being outplayed by O'Malley so he wasn't needed) on June 22nd to start against the Tigers, and he threw a complete game 4 hitter, then on the 28th (I'm currently on the 30th now), in the last game I played, he went 6 innings and only gave up one run agasint the Phillies. Putting his ERA at 0.60. He also has 11 strikeouts in 15 innings, and a 0.73 WHIP.

This move might have saved my season, in many ways. I could've stuck it out with Gallardo (worst option) and took basically a guaranteed L every time he started, I could've called up a younger starter (Gaviglio or Moore) and let them make their MLB debuts and potentially be kind of good or really really bad, but I opted for the 4th year vet with just over 2 years of MLB service time, and has it paid off. I don't expect ace stuff from him over the rest of the season, but he's earned a spot as the 5th starter in my mind. Gallardo has since made 3 relief appearances, 2 of which we games in which he got the save, due to the fact he had gone 3 innings and we were up so much it didn't matter he gave up a few runs, lmao. He's now 2nd on the team in saves behind Diaz with 2, although his ERA is still 6.82 lol.

As for the rest of the team, I won't go into a huge update like my last posts but we had a bad losing skid where we went 5-8 including losing 5 in a row, but our offense is coming back around and we are 7-2 in our last 9 games. We are currently 44-36, 3rd in the west, 2.5 GB of the Astros (Rangers are 2 GB), and 1 GB of the 2nd WC (Rangers are 0.5 back)

Yeah made a bunch of changes mostly just through free agency between who I wasn't bringing back and who I signed. I gotta admit I'm getting close to simulating games to get through multiple seasons as I played a majority of season one (approx. 150 regular season games) and I've played all 27 games of season 2 to date. I'm on HOF difficulty but apparently my team is just too good contact wise as they are able to slap the ball all over the yard and maintain a ridiculously high average (.318 through 27 games).

My hitting is on All star which I've never tried, I always played on veteran before and I lead the league in batting average in early July, which is something I never did playing on veteran, although I am actually playing every game. Playing every game is super cool to do and I'm definitely gonna get through the first year playing all 162. Year 2 I might change it up and do some quick manage games here and there. It's truly cool to play in all the different stadiums and see each team's players throughout the season.

I was the same way about playing every game then my plans went up in smoke about a week into September so I eventually simulated the remainder of the season at that point. Keep posting updates, enjoy seeing your stats and comparing them to how I did in season one.

Once I get to the ASB of August 1st I'll post another big update! All stars, stats, standings, prospects etc. I love seeing how other people's prospects develop and how their players do in the MLB. How are your prospects doing in year 2?

I manually injured Marte for 80 games (steroids) and I am keeping Kang in the minors for the year for real life situations. Only trade I made was a C prospect to TB for Jumbo Diaz.

                Rotation:
                Cole - 5.63ERA
                Nova - 1.10ERA
                Taillon - 1.93ERA

                Bullpen:
                Shugel - 2.25ERA
                LeBlanc - 1.38ERA
                Nicasio - 6.00ERA
                Marinez - 1.04ERA
                Watson - 2.25ERA
                Hudson - 2.08ERA
                Rivero - 1.59ERA 10SV

                Lineup:
                Frazier - .339/1/3
                Harrison -.227/0/8
                McCutchen - .309/3/12
                Bell - .239/1/8
                Polanco .258/5/17
                Freese -.230/1/11
                Cervelli - .288/0/6
                Mercer - .275/1/2

                Bench:
                Moroff - .471/0/4
                Osuna - .250/1/3
                Jaso - .269/1/2
                Stewart -.313/0/2
                Diaz -.000/0/0 (6AB)

I am pleased with my lineup and bench although i might look to add another veteran (not Gosselin) bench player at 3B/OF cause i will sit Marte in postseason if i make it. Even though Marinez is 55overall I seem to pitch very well with him but if Cole doesn't turn it around by July (4.30-4.50era) or the back of my rotation falters I would like to pick up some rotation depth 3rd-5th starter and a bullpen arm. I may look to trade Watson/Cole but what can I get for them? I know this isn't the trade forum but that one is so cluttered and a bunch of stuff gets lost. I have 30 team control but only use the pirates, i let the CPU make their own trades/roster moves. I would obviously trade Cole to a contender regardless but I would like to get a starter with less than 2-3 years of service time. Dodgers offered both Maeda/Ryu and Maeda/Baez for Cole/Bastardo but i figured that wasn't very realistic but maybe Cole/Maeda+prospect. I'm willing to dump Bastardo for very little so I would have enough money to go after a Gray/Hamels type lefty starter. My rotation is all righties.

At the deadline I will make trades they make in real life that is the reason I have 30 team control or at least make real life type moves for teams in contention

Still early but Twins,Rockies,Padres all have less than .400 winning percentage

I was looking at Nathan Eovaldi/Homer Bailey as possible rotation upgrades and the Padres bullpen

                potential SP (lefties)
                Danny Duffy (KC)
                Jason Vargas (KC)
                Tyler Anderson (COL)
                Daniel Norris (DET)
                Robbie Erlin (SD)
                Christian Friedrich (SD)
                Adam Conley (MIA)
                Gio Gonzalez (WSH)
                Wei-Yin Chen (MIA)
                Andrew Heaney (LAA)
                J.A. Happ (TOR)
                Wade Miley (BAL)
                Roenis Elias (BOS-AAA)
                Brett Anderson (CHC)
                Drew Pomeranz (BOS)

Update: 29-21 1st in NL Central, 1.5 up on the Cubs. My lineup is doing fantastic so i'm only worried about my pitching situation.

                Rotation:
                Cole - 3.99ERA
                Nova - 1.65ERA
                Taillon - 2.88ERA
                Kuhl - 3.86ERA
                Williams - 6.45ERA

                Bullpen:
                Shugel - 2.89ERA
                LeBlanc - 1.57ERA
                Nicasio - 6.35ERA
                Marinez - 2.93ERA
                Watson - 1.53ERA
                Hudson - 4.32ERA
                Rivero - 1.47ERA 17SV

I think I will drop Williams from the rotation and into the bullpen and trade Nicasio and trade for a lefty starter. Out of the list above what would be the best option?

The teams out of contention are (6GB+): Twins, Astros, Angels, Padres (worst in MLB 17-35)

Scott Kazmir was on the trade block and they would accept this offer:

                RP Bastardo (another bullpen arm)
                SP Kingham (b potential prospect)
3B Mathisen (c potential) is that fair?

I'll wait until end of june/july to make the trade

Took 3-4 vs the Reds even though they no hit us in game 2 of the series. About to enter the last 30 game stretch with a 2.5 game lead over the hated Brewers and we are about to start a 3 game series.

It is getting interesting with the Brewers again, last year we beat them in the second to last game of the season to clinch the division. Then we had to come back down a run in the tenth inning of game 7 of the NLDS to go to the World Series.

                    End of season - 2020

Well the 2020 season has come to an end and it ended up being a lot better than expected. We finished at 79-83. 3rd place in the Central. And 18 games back of the Tigers for 1st. We went 40-33 after the all star break. Took 7 straight wins to end the year to get there though. We were as much as 17 games back in early June. The Blue Jays and Tigers finished tied for the best record in the majors at 97-65. Rockies had the best record in in the NL at 95-67. A's were the worst in the AL at 60-102. The Rays joined them in the 100 loss club at 62-100. Padres were worst in the NL at 65-97. Astros and Angels ended up tied for the division and had to play an extra game. Astros went on to win 10-6.

                    Spoiler

The offense stayed pretty consistent all season. We averaged 4.2 runs over the 2nd half of the season which is exactly what the season average is. Our 684 runs was good for 14th in the league. We hit .258/.321/.415. That was 15th, 15th and 18th overall. We were 18th with 265 doubles, tied for 7th with 42 doubles and 21st with 177 HR. Finally stealing bases again. We finished 3rd with 134. Not the best percentage though at just 77% which was 12th best.

                    Offensive Stats
                    Spoiler

Turned out to be solid seasons for a lot of guys. Especially some younger / less experienced ones.
                    • Ryan O'Hearn did almost exactly what i was expecting. Kind of exceeded it about at well with his AVG and OBP so high. Though he rarely played against lefties.

                    • Bubba Starling was probably the most surprising player of the year. Finished 4th on the team in WAR at 3.8. He had .7 coming into the year.

                    • Corey Toups played really well over the 2nd half. Went from .236/.303/.375 with 5 HR at the break to .272/.335/.440 with 13 HR. Might have saved his job heading into next year.

                    • Mark Springer didnt have the best AVG. But everything else was pretty damn good. When he did get a hit a lot of the time (42% to be exact) it went for extra bases. He was damn good on the bases and in the field as well. And it helped him finish 2nd in rookie of the year voting.

                    • Moose and Salvy were pretty much exactly exactly what you would expect. Salvy could have hit a few more HR and Moose could have had a higher AVG but all in all it was a normal season for them.

                    • Mondesi didn't quite have the season we were expecting. Career high in Runs, Hits, HR, RBI and SB. But most of that is because of a career high in AB. His HR/AB was lower than last season. Overall it was still his best season. And he put up 3.3 WAR in 131 games. Which is the same amount he had in 327 games prior to this season.

                    • Hunter Dozier will be 29 next season and really hasn't shown much improvement at all since his rookie year. He doesn't have a solid position so he will be the DH going into next year. But Jorge Soler may need to play there quite a bit coming back from his ACL tear.

                    • Whit is the only other guy worth talking about really. Had an amazing 1st half and then completely fell off as the season went on. His final line is solid for his skill set so he still has a spot on the team. But had he been able to keep up his pace all season he would be a starter for sure heading into next year.

Overall the pitching wasnt that great. We finished with a 4.12 ERA which was 23rd in the league. We were 20th with 196 HR allowed, 23rd with 539 walks and 20th with 1326 K's. We were a lot better over the 2nd half though. Gave up just 3.6 runs per game after the all star break.

                    Pitching Stats
                    Spoiler

Danny Duffy was so bad in the 1st half. And then so good in the 2nd. 4.34 ERA through 105.2 IP before the AS break. And had a WHIP of 1.19. In the 2nd half he put up a 2.44 ERA in 99.2 IP with a WHIP of 0.91. Ended up with the most strikeouts in his career. And had his 2nd best season by WAR with 5.

Mariano Parra was fantastic after his call up in June. But cant even be surprised after what he had done in the minors the last 2 years. 17 of his 21 games were quality starts. And even if he regresses to his FIP of 3.65 he would still be a damn good starter for us with Duffy leading the way.

Eric Skoglund turned it around in the 2nd half much like Duffy. I guess they saw this rookie lighting it up and started to get embarrassed. He had a 4.88 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 51.2 IP before the break. And followed it up with a 2.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 65.2 IP after the break.

Nate Karns was a lot like Whit. Good 1st half bad 2nd. And it was bad enough that im not even sure we will offer him a contract. Hasnt had an ERA under 3.95 since he put up 3.15 in 2017. And has a 4.64 ERA his last 2 seasons. May offer him a 1 year deal while we wait for some other prospects to come up cause no one else was any better after him.

Jake Junis, Scott Blewett, Kyle Zimmer and Mike Minor all had ERA's between 4.89 and 6.28. Scott Blewett at least has the excuse of still being young at 23. Everyone else is 27 or older. They are all under contract for next season so they will have some spot in the organization. But we have a lot of guys down in the minors that look good so they may start losing their spots not just in the majors if they dont turn things around.

As for the bullpen I don't think you could really expect much better than what we got. The 5 main guys in the bullpen combined to go 18-10 with a 2.71 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 299.1 IP. Idk about the other teams but we couldn't have been far from the best.

                      Super brief info:

                      Who's out?
                      • 3B Joey Gallo - traded to LAA
                      • LF Michael Conforto - signed with COL
                      • C Yan Gomes - don't care where he ended up
                      • CP Hector Rondon - horrible 2nd half and not sure if he signed

                      Who's in?
                      • OF Odubel Herrera - 2-year deal and should be a great platoon/4th OF
                      • IF Jung Ho Kang - veteran power bat to fill in or pinch hit
                      • C Miguel Vasquez - acquired in Gallo trade, great future at C
                      • 3B Richard Barnard - 2019 1st rd pick finally gets his moment

We're pretty excited about this lineup. We have a mix of established All-Stars and some potential All-Stars. Offensively there's great depth and we're looking to reclaim the spot as the best offense in the league. Our farm system is weak on offense so we're hoping to have a relatively healthy season.

With our pitching staff we have a huge question mark at closer with Jimmie Peters who pitched poorly in his rookie season. However he has some really good stuff and we're hoping hits his stride in year 2. Betances has regressed hard so he's not a guy we want in the closer spot unless we need it. We really like our rotation and have some very capable arms in the farm system. We're setting up well for the next few seasons with guys who should be ready to step in and do the job.

*Just started game #1...the first pitch of the season is a no doubt HR to CF by Austin Meadows off NYM start Amir Garrett who has been a very solid SP for their club*

MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

My games have been so stressful this season. Every game seems to come down the the 8th or 9th inning. Last night vs the Reds we hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead.

Today in game one of an important series vs the Brewers the bottom of the lineup rallied with two outs and down a run vs Chapman. Braun had an E9 and then then next at bad we had what looked like an easy pop up but he didn't really seem to go after it which was odd. Shockingly we pinch hit our back up catcher for the pitcher. Dude is batting less than .100 but he drives in both runners for a fist pumping win.

A couple images from the rookies in my first game of 2022 (Atlanta Braves fantasy draft)

3B Richard Barnard hits a double in his MLB debut AB. He finished 2-4 adding a 3-run HR in the 9th to pour it on.

C Miguel Vasquez blasted a 2-run HR in his 2nd MLB AB. He finished 2-5 adding a double.

Rookie RP Raymond Chang throws a shutout 9th inning to complete the 12-0 victory

Braves win game #1 of 2022 behind Alex Reyes throwing 7 shutout innings (3 H, 4 BB, 11 K). Atlanta would complete the shutout and post a dominating 12-0 victory. Atlanta was up 4-0 in the 7th and hit the gas scoring 8 runs in their final 3 AB's.

Moved Steve Cishek for Erasmo Ramirez ala real life, both had similar stats in my chose so it made sense. I'll be using Erasmo in the bullpen tho, as Bergman has emerged as a quality fifth starter so far. Miranda has been good lately and Gallardo is still eating innings in the pen as a LR guy so Erasmo can just take Cishek's place in the bullpen.

                              Off Season + Spring Training - 2021

Well probably our best hitter is gone. Back in 2017 we gave Mike Moustakas a 4 year deal with a player option for the 4th year. He declined that option. Then declined the 4 year 84 million dollar deal we offered him and chose to sign with the Padres for 3 years 62 million. We didn't make any moves to replace him. and didnt have anyone else that was a free agent. We brought in a couple young guys to fill out the minors and thats it. Biggest contracts of the off season go to Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw. Both got 9 years and 279 million. Kershaw will finish his career a Dodger and Mike Trout heads to the east coast as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

                              Notable Contracts
                              Spoiler

So the biggest question heading into ST was who replaces Moose. Cuthbert and Dozir really hadnt done anything recently to be a clear favorite. Richard Pectol was our 4th round pick in 2018 and has done pretty well down in the minors. But he isnt the best defensively. We also had battles for backup Catcher, IF and OF spots as well as 2 spots in the rotation.

The 3rd base spot is going to go to Cuthbert. Dozier will stay up as a backup at 3rd, 1st and LF. Dozier really deserved to be sent down. But I wanted Pectol to get every day at bats so he will start in AAA. He was actually the best hitting .327/.422/.473 with 1 HR in 56 AB. Cuthbert was next hitting .309/.356/.636 with 5 HR in 55 AB. Dozier hit just .179/.207/.429 with 4 HR in 56 AB.

Backup Catcher goes to Meibrys Viloria. He hit .474/.500/.605 with a HR in 38 AB. He was fighting with Cam Gallagher and Chase Vallot. Gallagher was really the only competition though. He hit .308/.341/.462 with 1 HR in 39 AB. Chase Vallot hit .186/.313/.296 with a HR in 27 AB.

Backup IF was going to go to Osvaldo Abreu. But he will have to start th season in AAA. I wanted him up but just couldnt make Room. He was acquired from the Nationals back in 2018 when we traded Brandon Moss. He was particularly great hitting just .267/.290/.533 with 2 HR in 30 AB. His competition was even worse though. Ramon torres hit .207/.233/.241 in 29 AB and Christian Adames hit .091/.167/.136 in 22 AB.

The 4th OF spot goes Terrance Gore. He hit .270/.386/.405 in 37 AB. He had the best chance heading into spring after hitting .280/.313/.392 last season. Great option as a late game pinch runner as well. He has 37 SB in his career and has been caught just 4 times. He beats out Billy Burns .179/.220/.282 and Ruben Sosa .184/.256/.263.

The last 2 rotation spots will go to Karns and Zimmer. Karns put up a 1.38 ERA in 26 IP and Zimmer had a 2.78 ERA in 32.1 IP. Jake Junis will be the long reliever after putting up a 3.33 ERA in 24.1 IP. They beat out Scott Blewett 6.55 ERA in 11 IP and A.J. Puckett 8.59 ERA in 7.1 IP.

Here is the full Organization for the 2021 season
                              Spoiler

We open up the season with a 3 game series in Cleveland. 23 games total in April with 11 at home and 12 on the road. 13 of the games will be against the division.

I would feel a lot better about this season if we had Moose. But i think we should still be okay for the most part. We are getting close. I think next year is when i think we can make back into the playoff race. So getting guys experience will play a big part in this season. We have a lot of money to spend next year and we are gonna need it. Mondesi and Strahm are the only guys under contract. Perez, Duffy, Soler, Karns, Maness, Flynn and Minor will all be free agents. But we do have pieces in the minors to replace a lot of them.

                                Mariners Franchise

                                All Star Break

We ended the first half with a sweep of Oakland to give us a clean 50-40 record at the break, 2 GB of the Astros and tied with he Red Six for the 1st wild card.

I'll start things off by listing the Mariners all stars for 2017:
                                CP Edwin Diaz
SS Jean Segura (starting SS, hitting leadoff)
                                2B Robinson Cano (starting 2B, hitting 2nd)
DH Nelson Cruz (starting DH, hitting 4th)

I thought it was cool my three of my all stars were not only starting, but and hitting in the top 4 spots. Nelson Cruz had bounced back and has been hot all throughout June and July. Segura also has been a hitting machine in the last month and a half. In AAA DJ Peterson made the all star team, and he was the Rainers' only all star. In AA, pitchers Tyler Cloyd, Zac Curtis, Evan Marshall, and Pat Light were named all stars, while hitters Tyler Marlette and Braden Bishop were also selected.

I have still played 100% of the Mariner's games, and to be just over halfway done is a little bittersweet. Super excited to potentially make the playoffs in year one, something the Mariners haven't done since 2001

I'll leave the top prospects off this update, I'll probably post a big update at the end of the season with everybody's 2017 stats and the outlook for their 2018 seasons (if they're a prospect at least). It'll include the 2017 draft class as well!
