April 19 2017 "Whats not to like about Colorado?"

My Rockies are 2.0 GB of the Giants in the division at 11-7. We are 6-4 in our last 10 and have defeated the Giants 2 games thus far in a 3 game set. My current pitching rotation is set as:

    Tyler Anderson - 1-1, 26.1 IP, 2 BB, 28 Ks, 2.05 ERA, 0.84 WHIP

    Tyler Chatwood - 3-0, 28.2 IP, BB, 24 Ks, 2.51 ERA, 0.77 WHIP

    Antonio Senzatela - 2-0, 24.0 IP, 25 Ks, 3.75 ERA, 0.96 WHIP

    Kyle Freeland - 0-1, 15.0 IP, 2 BB, 16 Ks, 7.20 ERA, 1.60 WHIP

    German Marquez - 1-2, 14.1 IP, 4 BB, 18 Ks, 5.65 ERA, 1.60 WHIP

My everyday lineup thus far has been:

Charlie Blackmon, CF - .362, HR, 5 RBI, 3 SB
    Carlos Gonzalez, RF - .292, 6 HR, 13 RBI
    Nolan Arenado, 3B - .138, 3 HR, 7 RBI
    Mark Reynolds, 1B - .302, 5 HR, 10 RBI
Trevor Story, SS - .345, HR, 3 RBI
    DJ LeMahieu, 2B - .397, 3 RBI
    Ian Desmond, LF - .220, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 SB
    Ryan Hanigan, C - .187, RBI
    P

Not much news in Transactions early in the season. Except the Pirates traded RF Adam Frazier to NY for CC Sabathia.

The Phillies traded 2B Scott Kingery to the Red Sox for 1B Mitch Moreland

i have also lost Mike Dunn to a broken hand for 1-2 months.

2022 Season - Trade Deadline update

I'm sitting at 55-49 and normally you'd think I'm in pretty good position but I feel like I'm really out of the race. I'm 6.5 games back of the Nationals (61-42) and they're trending up while I'm struggling. I'm in 3rd place as the Marlins (58-45) are up 3.5 on me. The story of my season so far has simply been inconsistency and injuries. I'm in a position where I'm not going to either sell or buy at this point. I am going to bring in a couple free agents at the deadline.

SP Danny Duffy (33 years old 75 OVR)
      - The promising on paper Michael Kopech has yet to pan out as a starter despite his NL Rookie of the Year 2019 season where he posted a 3.86 ERA. Since then he's posted 4.63 -> 4.54 -> 5.71. He holds a career ERA of 4.51 and gets knocked around early and often. He has electric stuff but he's not a guy we can count on every night. He's been demoted to AAA and we're going to move him to the bullpen. Duffy has a career ERA of 3.79 and has trended closer to the 4.00 range over the past 3 seasons but we feel like he can be a more consistent piece of the rotation. He's only pitched 210 innings over the past two seasons so durability is an issue, but hopefully not pitching the first half of the season means he has enough in the tank to get us through the rest of the year.

CF Adam Jones (36 years old 78 OVR)
      - With Austin Meadows breaking his ankle just a few days prior to the trade deadline and with no viable options in the minors we're going with a proven veteran with 320 career HR's and some great defensive ability. Jones hit .249 with 17 HR in 357 AB's with the Mets in 2021 so there's still something in the tank. This is a great fit for Jones as he's going to a team that has a shot to be in contention for the playoffs.

      The current guys we had:
      26 yr old Francisco Chacin 74 OVR - .256 avg 1 HR in 78 AB -> really underwhelming on O with A POT...looking like a bust
25 yr old Daz Cameron 77 OVR - career .210 hitter who is struggling at .170 in 94 AB's.
30 yr old Odubel Herrera 73 OVR - he has tanked this season hitting .232 with 1 HR in 155 AB's and was DFA

So now we have Schultz in LF who is hitting .215 and Jones in CF and Bryce Harper in RF. Harper is hitting .305 but having a power outage with only 13 HR in 348 AB's. After 5 straight 30+ HR seasons and 335 career HR the 29 year old is looking like he's on the back end of his storied career. I'm hoping he's able to find that HR swing here soon.

I have a 21 yr old LF in Diego Marquez who is hitting .287 in AAA but he's just not ready for the big time.

Hoping I can climb back in the race but I'm not mortgaging my future to do it. We won the WS two seasons ago so the fans can chill.

        Hey franchise heads...

As usual, I've been editing rosters pretty much nonstop to this point, but have a roster that I think is about franchise-ready--(with trade deadline moves and such). So, yeah, this is going to be one of those posts where I want to start a new franchise and I am asking you fine folks for suggestions for said franchise.

Specifically, I am conflicted over doing a fantasy draft or rolling with a real team with all their flaws and strengths. Normally, I take a rebuilding club (Twins, Marlins, Padres, for example, in recent years) and try to build them up. Normally, I get caught in the orbit of realism and so I have shied away from fantasy drafts for a few years. However, I think with a well planned fantasy draft (i.e. one where I'm not snatching up all the top prospects and low-salary 25 year olds from under the cpu's nose) that I could do well playing within an alternative sort of realism. And one in which the type of roster/kind of players and the team characteristics (teh uniformz, stadium etc) are both of my choosing.

All that said, any suggestions for interesting scenarios, for/against fantasy draft, or how you would go about things would be welcome.

I'm in the same boat, I want to start a franchise but with all the deals done I'm at a point where I don't want to use a real team because even more trades will be made etc etc.

I vote fantasy draft as that's what I'll be doing as well. I usually take a team that's never won a championship and go from there.... Or I take a teams with great uniform options... This time I think I'm going with the white sox. Love those retro unis

Play a franchise with your Cubbies. It could be a fantasy draft or use the real roster. I always have the most fun playing a franchise with my favorite team. Just be sure to post updates here

I'd consider it, but I did one with the Cubs back on MLB 14 or MLB 15...I am also the odd duck that finds it hard to chise with my favorite team because it's extra tough to avoid what they're doing in real life. Or to avoid the dissonance between that and my franchise. Thanks for the suggestion though. I do plan on posting updates here periodically (I usually make my own thread, but that's just too much work, lol).

That's how I feel too! I play every game and rushed through year 1 to get to 2018 (or the offseason after 2017) because I was able to play out my own universe in my franchise. Now I can make trades for myself and all other teams, so now I'm at the trade dealine in 2018 and I don't feel guilty making trades for teams, as long as I keep it realistic, of course.

With my fantasy draft I wanted to get away from the typical expectations you would have of the team I picked. So what I did was select 7 players and then I simmed the rest of the draft.

I had some good luck with that as the CPU picked me some really nice pieces in addition to my core guys.

I really like this idea and will adopt it if I ever burn out playing as Seattle. Pick a team that hasn't done much of anything recently, do a fantasy draft and make the first 7 picks then let the chips fall where they may. Honestly it makes me kinda wanna throw in the towel on my Seattle franchise and start fresh with this idea instead lol.

Middle of May in my Orioles franchise. I did all the real life trades, except the Yankees for Sonny Gray as the Yankees don't have the funds to make the trade yet.

Anyway swept the Blue Jays in a 3 game series. Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis bats finally woke up. Trumbo hit 2 bombs, while Davis had 4 home runs 2x in B2B games.

Third game of the series saw Jeremy Hellickson and Tim Beckham make their Orioles debuts. Hellickson went 6 innings allowing 1 run while striking out 5, while Beckham went 3 for 4 including what would end up as the game winning RBI in the bottom of the 8th.

My relievers are all pitching better as the season progresses after a disastrous first month.

I'm 20-23 in the middle of May and fully expect a losing streak to hit as whenever I get within 3 games of .500 I can't seem to put anything together.

i kind of like the idea of drafting your 25 man rosater and letting the cpu draft your minors so you dont pillage the top 50 prospects etc.... dammit i may have to do this now lol

or draft my starting lineup and 1 starter & reliever... then sim the rest

I'm in 2022 if that's any indication of how much I've enjoyed this franchise. Easily the longest I've ever stuck with one franchise in MLB.

Make it what you want. I wanted to make sure I didn't get a team full of young guys that I could easily build into a super team. I gave myself 6 picks (3 position guys and 3 pitchers) + Michael Kopech in the 7th round.

I allowed my picks to be 3 A POT guys and 3 B POT guys.

                          I went: Bryce Harper/Carlos Correa/Gerrit Cole/Michael Conforto/Carlos Martinez/Michael Wacha

Won the NL East 4 years straight and in season 5 I finally didn't make the playoffs and in year #6 I'm a borderline playoff team and my team is starting to have some turnover and my talent is no longer the best in the league.

And if anyone has been reading...Michael Kopech isn't cutting it as a SP in the MLB so he's going to transition to RP.

I think you guys sold me on the fantasy draft (I think I wanted to be sold on it anyway), so thanks for that. Now I just need to pick a team and cook up some fantasy draft house rules.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread

Spent the entire day making changes to the new OSFM roster and setting up my new franchise, that hopefully will see me through until next year. Decided on the Phillies in the end, as they have the right amount of sucking and some prospects I like, while being in the NL. Came down to them or Padres, but just prefer the Phillies uni's that clinched it.

Looking at the team, there are obviously some holes that need filling taking the after trade deadline roster from the very start of the season. So I signed a few budget bullpen arms in Axford, Hochevar and Paco Rodriguez to be our lefty.

Looking at the hitting side of things, we're alright, but really need a lefty to platoon at first with Joseph and a righty to platoon at SS with Galvis. Looking through the free agents and it was pretty obvious who I should sign, so welcome back Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins!

Finally sorted everything out, time to hit the field and hope for the best

We are now 5x NL East Champs and overcame some tough injuries to finish with the best record in the MLB (93-69). The Nationals and their insane off season spending spree faltered at the end of the season finishing 91-71 and then lost to the New York Mets in the Wildcard game 11-1. Mets ace Amir Garrett has really proven to be one of the best SP's in the NL. He's posted a career 3.47 ERA with the Mets and over his past two seasons he's posted a total ERA ~2.85 with 33 wins to only 11 losses.

How'd we win the NL East?
Carlos Correa led the offensive charge winning the NL batting title (.349) while leading the team in most offensive categories (33 HR 103 RBI 1.00+ OPS). He was beat out by WAS 1B Freddie Freeman for NL MVP by a slim margin as Freeman had a really great year after coming over from Detroit, where he also won an MVP.

There was a bit of a change with our team makeup as we went from a power slugging team to a more balanced offense. We were 2nd in runs scored but instead of being the typically league leader in HR (3 times in first 5 seasons) we finished in the middle of the pack in HR. We finished 5th in batting average and 2nd in OBP and had a good bit of speed on the base paths. It didn't translate to an elite number of SB's (9th in MLB) but it helped get those extra runs in.

Bryce Harper had a solid season but it really appears he's slowing down which kills me. He still hit over .300 with 25 HR but he's no longer the MVP caliber player he was for the first 5 seasons with Atlanta. He'll hit 30 next season and still has 4 years left on his 10-year max contract. 3B Richard Barnard won NL ROtY going away blasting 24 HR's and hitting .275. As happy as we are for his production it's tough to see former 3B Joey Gallo win AL MVP (54 HR 114 RBI) for the Angels.

                                Pitching recap:
SP Alex Reyes bounced back and won his 2nd Cy Young. He wasn't nearly as dominant as the historical 2020 season but he still won 14 games while leading the NL in IP (203.2) and K's (250). We're hoping we can associate his Cy Young Award with another World Series Championship.

Carlos Martinez is 30 years old, in the last year of his contract, and after his great season (15-5 3.16 ERA) his stock is surely up. Danny Duffy was a great FA pickup after Drew Pomeranz went down with injury. Duffy posted a 2.91 ERA in 65 innings. Guy Hogsett seems to improve every season and he led all Atlanta qualified starters in ERA (2.93) and finally began to flash some strike out ability. He went from 6.24 -> 6.23 -> 8.19. Our #5 Michael Kopech did poor enough to get demoted to bullpen duties and is going to transition to RP in the off season. Kurt Lewers filled in nicely posting a 2.94 ERA in 119.1 IP this season. He doesn't have much of a ceiling but he projects as a possible #5 SP or spot starter/long reliever. He's extremely good at keeping the ball down and forcing ground balls.

Our bullpen had their ups and downs. Jake Reed established himself as the most reliable bullpen arm with Tanner Scott coming in at runner up for that title. Our young closer Jimmie Peters is either lights out or he gets rocked. His five BSV this season were all huge innings that resulted in L's. He managed a 4.04 ERA despite being injured a few months and posted 29 saves. The capability of being a very good bullpen is there but we'll see what happens in the postseason.
