MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Jay is aging and Sierra gives us a speed threat in the lead off spot. Something this team definitely needs. Sierra is also a great defensive CF with a cannon for an arm.
His biggest weakness is hitting, but in Spring Training he hit .301. In AAA last year he hit .347. So he's on the up swing.
But I like Jay as a platoon/veteran player in case Sierra isn't quite ready for the big leagues.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
A much better week of baseball moves the Rays from 5-10 to 10-12, with the pitching staff no longer the worst in the major leagues, now only 4th worst with an eye watering 4.85 ERA. The bats have heated up a bit as well with a slew of homeruns from the heart of the line up, even if the batting averages still aren't too promising.
Cory Dickerson is currently second in the HR race with 7, one behind surprise early front runner Russell Martin (not quite like real life...) Kiermaier leads the way for the team in average at .286, while having stolen 10/12 bags.
Things look to be turning around a bit in terms of both individual and team performance, but our record probably flatters us a bit, we've not been very good at all.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
I got my Atlanta Braves 30 team control franchise started up with OSFM V1.5 a few days ago. Currently at April 18th with a 6-6 record. I was hoping for at least a winning record at this point. In third place behind the Nationals and Mets. Nationals are 9-3, Mets are 8-6. To start off the season I was surprised as we came out and swept the Mets at Citi Field despite the dominant trio of Syndergaard, Degrom, and Harvey. The work of that surprising sweep was quickly undone though as we would immediately be swept ourselves in the next series against Pittsburgh on the road. We followed that by splitting the 2 game set in Miami. Then we split the 4 game series against the Padres in the opening series of SunTrust Park.
Unfortunately back on 4/9 SP Julio Teheran had to be placed on the DL with a broken hand. He's out for 1-2 months. Called up Matt Wisler to replace him. The pitching hasn't been great, pretty much what you would expect. R.A. Dickey has been a nice surprise so far with 7 SO's, a 1.38 ERA, and a 0.85 WHIP. The only relievers who stand out as performing badly are Eric O'Flaherty and Jim Johnson.
O'Flaherty has given up 10 hits and 5 runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Jim Johnson has given up 14 hits and 7 runs while blowing 3 saves.
Dansby Swanson has been on fire with a 357 AVG and a 440 OBP with 15 hits and 6 RBI's. Brandon Phillips has been producing nicely with a 327 AVG. Freeman is second in the NL in HR's with 6. The offense has been pretty decent.
Already have a pretty set plan for the deadline unless the team really out performs expectations. Very likely going to be moving Kemp and Markakis to get rid of their contracts. Don't really care if I get anything much back. Their still pretty good pieces for a contender. Will probably keep Colon and Dickey since they likely won't have much value anyway.
Up next is a 3 game series against the Nationals at SunTrust.Comment

Hey I just wanted to get your guys opinion on something. Not sure if you guys have tried TNK's sliders but can anyone give their option on which sliders they are using? I've seen some people are using Armor & Sword but I was wondering if there's much of a difference between that and TNK sliders. All I want are the most realistic stats for my franchise. Thanks all!Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
End of May - 2017
Spoiler
May got off to a strong start taking 3 of 4 games against the White Sox and 2 of 3 from Indians before splitting a 4 game series with the Rays. Baltimore then came to town and swept us in 3 games. While the Yankees took 2 of 3 in the next series. Bounced back and swept the Twins and split another 4 game series this time with the Yankees in New York. Picked up 1 more win against Cleveland before dropping our last 5 including a sweep to the Tigers. Currently sitting at 24-30. 8.5 games behind the Indians for 1st and 7 games out of the Wild Card.
Danny Duffy was amazing this month. 6 Starts. 1.26 ERA in 35.2 IP. 40 K's to just 6 walks. He is 2nd in the AL with a 2.18 ERA. Ian Kennedy was pretty good as well. 6 starts. 3.00 ERA in 33 IP. 36 K's to 6 walks. In his last game he gave up 4 runs in 5 IP. Before that his era was 2.25 in his 5 May starts. Both Nate Karns and Jason Vargas continued to struggle. I should have pulled them from the rotation earlier but they would have a good start giving me some confidence and then turn around and have 2 bad starts. But going into June i am indeed moving them out of the rotation. Nate Karns will move to the pen. And Jason Vargas will be released.
The Bullpen for the most part has been pitching very well. Matt Strahm is by far the worst with a 7.50 ERA in 12 IP. Most of that is from April though. Just 1 ER allowed in May. Only 5 IP though. Kelvin Herrera has a 4.15 ERA in 13 IP. Since his blown save on opening day though he has a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 IP. The other 5 guys in the pen currently have a 2.36 in 133.1 IP combined. That does not include Chris Young. He was released on the 25th and Seth Maness was called up to take his place. Mike Minor will now be moving up to the rotation to take Nate Karns spot.
On the offensive side Alcides Escobar has been absolutely on fire the last 2 weeks. Currently has a 13 game hitting streak. In those 13 games he has a line of .442/.491/.558. Overall he is now hitting .290/.328/.387 in 186 AB. Jorge Soler returned on May 7th. In 24 games since he is hitting .298/.416/.500 with 3 HR in 84 AB. Mike Moustakas seems to have went back to his 2014 form. Currently hitting .208/.294/.396 with 9 HR. Alex Gordon has been the best hitter with a line of .265/.366/.459 with 9 HR and 26 RBI.
Kyle Zimmer will be called up to replace Jason Vargas. First start is going to be on June 6th. Exactly 5 years after he was drafted. In 6 starts for AAA Omaha he is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA in 31 IP. Ryan O'Hearn leads Omaha with 10 HR and 28 RBI. With Jorge Bonifacio leading the team in AVG and OBP at .313/.396.
Jonathan Dziedzic will replace Zimmer in AAA. He was sent down to AA at the start of May and has played great since. 2.17 ERA in 29 IP. Miguel Almonte will move up from A to replace him. Terrance Gore was sen to AA when Soler came off the DL. He is hitting .304/.407/.391 with 8 SB in 17 games. Our #13 prospect Donnie Dewees is hitting .290/.381/.432 with 3 HR and 7 SB in 162 AB. And Ruben Sosa is hitting .283/.384/.434 with 4 HR and 10 SB in 159 AB.
4 of our 26 games in June are against teams with winning records. Still time to get things on track but at some point we will have to start thinking about shipping some guys out for some prospects. Hosmer, Cain, Moose, and Kennedy are all potentially available. Hunter Dozier will come off of the DL in the next couple days. Will be assigned to AAA for now but could be up soon if he starts off hot. Peter O'Brien is hitting just .247/.256/.342 in 73 AB. So we could use some help at DH/3B/1B/LF when someone needs a day off..
The 2017 draft was a pretty damn good one for us.
Our 1st round pick was 19 year old catcher Garrett Green. Has the potential to be special. Easily could be a perennial all star and wouldn't rule out an MVP or 2. His glove is already major league ready but his bat will take some time to come around.
In the 2nd we took 18 year old SP Austin Prado. Throws a 4 seam, Circle Change, Cutter, Slider and curve. He could be up fast. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in the pen at some point late next year.
In the 3rd we took 20 year old Of Ryan McLain. Sees the ball really well. Could regularly hit .275+ with a .350+ OBP. While stealing 20+ bases. Wont hit for much power. 15 HR is probably his ceiling.
In the 4th we took 18 year old SP Cal Switzer. He throws a 4 Seam, Splitter, Cutter and Change. Gonna be much more of a project than Prado. But has #2 upside as a lefty.
In the 5th we took 22 year old RP Bobby Addison. He throws a 4 seam, Curve. Splitter, Change up. Highly doubtful he ever does anything let alone makes it to the majors.
In the 6th we took 19 year old OF Richard Bong. Low AVG high power guy. Has the speed to steal 15 bases. But cant field for **** so DH/1B is his likely spot.
In the 7th we took 22 year old RP Damien Nottingham. Another guy that could be up next year. Really good moment on his pitches. Aside from that he is an average at best reliever in the majors.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Cubs are falling fast, down to 33-20 still one of the best records in the league but it might not last long. We can only squeeze out 4 or 5 hits a game and the long ball has died for now.
The roster is always tired, one day after a break they are tired again. I wonder if I should set a few vets to 'no training' for a bit?MLB the Show - Cubs

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
The Jays are 1-2 after their first three games. After the hard luck loss in Baltimore In game 1 they followed it up with a 4-0 loss In game 2. Dylan Bundy pitched a 2 hit shutout. Donaldson got Toronto's only 2 hits in a bad show from the offence.
Game 1 against Tampa was better. The Jays got their first win of the year defeating Tampa 5-2. Steve Pearce hit 2 home runs and now has 3 early in the season.
Justin Smoak was sent to AAA after an 0 for 7 start to the year. Small sample but the Jays decided he wasn't a good fit. They called up James Loney to fill his spot. Loney will start In game 2 and will see a lot of time vs righties. The Jays are expecting contact and good fielding at first.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Made it to the All-Star break with my Rays franchise who are currently 4th in the AL East at 39-51. We only had one All-Star (Chris Archer) who is having a career year and at first I thought about trading him, but feel it is better to keep him. Kevin Kiermaier is looking like the best player on the team and is projected to have the best statistical year of his career. Justin Morneau has been moving up in the lineup as he is having a nice year with batting average over .300. The Rays are 2nd in the league in HR's with those moon shots being spread pretty evenly throughout the lineup.
Nathan Eovaldi started off on the bench, but an injury to Alex Cobb and some superb pitching led to him being the #2 pitcher behind Archer. He seems like a good candidate to move at the trade deadline since he is having a nice year on a 1 year deal. Evan Longoria has 17 HR's, but I suspect he will decline sharply as the years pass by so he will probably be moved too.
SDS did a nice job adding more ways to get through seasons. I've played a lot of critical situations, quick manage, and player locking on to a random hitter on my lineup. It's been very enjoyable so far and will keep trucking to the off-season and the 2018 season!Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
So I started a 30 team franchise initially controlling the Padres... Man, it's so hard losing that many games and having such a difficult time even making contact with those kids. I'm playing on All-Star hitting (directional) and HoF pitching (classic). Not necessarily getting shelled, but not scoring enough to be competitive either. My question is this, should I feel bad about switching to my fav team (the Cubs) and enjoying "possibly" whipping some teams? I don't want it to feel like the WS was a cake walk (not saying I'm any good at the game), but IDK if I can struggle and be beat up so badly. Is the feeling of "I DID ALL THAT" worth it for you guys that have gone from bottom feeders with a small budget to winners? Petco is a beautiful park on the game, but I enjoy Wrigley as well. Thanks guysComment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
So I used TNK's sliders for a franchise a couple of years ago. But I decided to give Armour and Swords sliders a try for this year, and they are incredibly realistic. I highly recommend them if you are looking for a good variety of hits, run differential, pitching duels, etc. If you are interested in a sample size, check out my series on youtube with Brewers https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo6...ohQJy_4qIb_FbA

Had Smoak backup Rizzo last season and he pinch hit for a game winning HR in my playoffs that keep me in a series. Wanted to bring him back this season but couldn't afford him. Love carry over saves.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
I am starting my Kansas City Royals franchise today. I will be playing all 162 games without quick counts so every pitch will be played (time consuming I know but I enjoy being in control of every aspect of the game.) I am using HOF difficulty for both hitting and pitching while using the TNK v2.0 sliders from the vault. I am also using the OSFM v1.5 rosters as a base to start the franchise. I will be giving game by game box scores so everyone can follow the season closely and suggestions are always welcome!Comment
