Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Played a super rare game early this morning. Started a 4 game set vs the Marlins @ Wrigley. Jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first behind 3 hits. Only managed 2 more hits the rest of the game, no surprise my average is less than 7 hits a game. The other two hits were Rendon/Rizzo back-to-back HR's.
Lester had a no-hitter broken up in the 7th. I had a feeling I was finally going to get my first no hitter ever! The pen almost blew the 5-0 lead in the 9th. Brought our closer, Derek Coronado, in with 2 outs in the 9th with runners on 2nd and 3rd to close the deal 5-3.
We move to 38-23 for the season.MLB the Show - Cubs
2015: 80-82
2016: 96-66 - Lost Game 7 of WS (18 innings to Red Sox)
2017: 93-69 - Swept by Red Sox in World Series
2018: 100-62 - Swept by Dodgers in NLCS

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
I decided to go ahead and sim the first year with my new Yankee franchise. Normally find it a bit fun to play further in the future, and with so many prospects it will be great to play with some developed guys right away.
Had some interesting sim results Year 1:
- Trout and Kershaw won their respective league MVPS (Kershaw won Cy Young too - again!)
- Paul Goldschmidt won the Hank Aaron award in the NL - probably the 2nd favorite for the MVP award after Kershaw
- Dodgers went 119-43 (!!!!) and were promptly eliminated by the Giants in the NLDS (oh lord, the scenes if this actually happened)
- White Sox went 46-113 (haha)
- My Yankees started off really hot and had a lead in the division over the Red Sox as late as the end of July, but a terrible August and meh Sept saw them crash out and miss the WC by 2 games to Texas
ALCS: Mariners (NL West division winners) defeated the Red Sox in 5 games
NLCS: Mets over Giants in 6
World Series: Mariners over Mets in 7!
Off-season Big Free Agent Movement included:
- Andrew McCutchen signed with the Rays (I control all 30 teams but I do like to let them sign their own free agents. This probably doesnt make a ton of sense but its not like I think Cutch will def resign with Pitt). Pitt had a mediocre season and will want to save money to sign Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon. I'm imagining a storyline where the Rays are taken over by wealthier owners (they signed a couple other guys too).
- Eric Hosmer to the Nationals
- Chris Sale to the Cubs (!!)
Anyway, with the new season, and some signings, I open the season with this team:
Lineup
2B Starlin Castro
CF Brett Gardner
C Gary Sanchez
RF Aaron Judge
1B Greg Bird
DH Matt Holiday/Chris Carter (kept both these guys)
3B Chase Headley
LF Howie Kendrick
SS Didi Gregorious
Bench:
2B Jorge Mateo (a 74 ovr year 2 on OSFM v1)
C Austin Romine
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
SP:
Tanaka
Pineda (signed to long term deal)
Severino
Jose Quintana (traded some prospects for him at trade deadline Year 1)
Yovani Gallardo
Bullpen is roughly the same as last year -
Excited to get going. Looks like Clint Frazier will be the next prospect to see some big league time, and I of course have my eyes on both Bryce Harper and Manny Machado as free agents (not both... just looking to get at least 1)
First series: 3 at home against Boston, 4 home vs. Tampa. Cant wait!Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
When I do my franchise, I look to see who has option years that expire soon (guy like Bumgarner has one for next season that seems to be no-brainer to pick up) and I edit accordingly. Guys like Sale, Quintana and Bumgarner, I edit to how many years they have of control including team option since they are cheap deals and 100% to get picked up but a guy like James Shields who will be old and making over $20+ mill his option year, seems like a no-brainer to be declined to I don't extend it out to the team option years. I do however edit the buy-out amount into the contract (so instead of White Sox only having to pay the $20 mill for the 2 years of Shields (Padres paying rest), I pay him $22 mill since the option is $2 mill.Last edited by The Left Shark; 04-20-2017, 10:04 AM.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Yeah his contract should be edited to have 2 more years since he isn't a free agent after this year. He has 2 very team friendly options left.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Lost Opening Day in Houston. Dallas Keuchel kept us in check for most of the game. We had our chances but was unable to get key hits.
Wainwright didn't have his best stuff giving up 3 homeruns with two of those from Carlos Correa.
We will try to bounce back in game 2 of this short 2 game series as Michael Wacha will face off with Sonny Gray.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Alright I'm sitting at 46-43 at the All Star break with the Padres and are in 2nd place in the NL West, however 21 games out.
I'm currently holding a WC spot.
Star players through the first half:
1B - Wil Myers: .286, 27HR and 68 RBI
RF - Hunter Renfroe: .297, 12 HR and 41 RBI
3B - Corey Spangenberg: .331, 5HR and 29 RBI
Pitchers:
Jered Weaver leads the club at 8-8 and a 2.90 ERA
Jhoulys Chacin is second at 6-4 with a 3.31 ERA
Rule 5 Picks:
SS - Allen Cordoba: .231, 1HR and 6 RBI
C - Luis Torrens: .250, 0HR, 11 RBI
RP - Miguel Diaz: 5-1, 4.24 ERA. 46.2 IP with 56 SO and 30BBs
This is supposed to be a rebuilding year, yet find the team competing. Now I have decisions to make if I want to add pieces to make a run or keep a lot of the prospects.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
End of Season - 2017
2017 season has finally come to an end. For us anyway. We were able to avoid the 100 in the loss column. Finishing at 66-96. Last place in the Central. 2nd worst in the AL. And tied for 3rd worst in the Majors. Not the season we were hoping for at all. But with the moves made at the AS break and our prospects performances i dont think we will be down long. Or at least I hope so.
Spoiler
Alex Gordon lead the team in WAR at 3.2. Tied his career high with 23 HR while hitting .246/.328/.422. Most surprising player was probably Alcides Escobar. Expected him to hit around .250 with an OBP under .300. But he finished with a .276 AVG and .313 OBP while hitting 35 doubles. Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas are tied for most disappointing. Moose hit .224/.294/.394 with 21 HR. Expected him to be a lot closer to his 2015 form where he hit .284/.348/.470. And Salvador Perez hit .233/.282/.359 with 16 HR. Not exactly surprised his AVG and OBP were so low. Expected the HR and doubles to be higher than they were though helping that SLG out.
Offensive Stats
Spoiler
On the pitching side Danny Duffy had the best season of his career by far. Finished 13-9 with a 2.47 ERA, 2.50 FPI, 216 strikeouts to 47 walks in 208 IP. Lead AL pitchers in WAR with (6.5), ERA, 2nd in HR allowed (14) and strikeouts and tied for 6th in IP. Yet somehow wasnt even top 3 in Cy Young voting. Rick Procello won with a 19-6 record, 2.99 ERA, 3.40 FPI, 185 K's, 45 BBs in 214 IP. Kelvin Herrera ended up as the best reliever after struggling early to start the season. Finished with 36 saves a 2.58 ERA and 3.66 FIP. Nate Karns had to be the worst pitcher for us. He finished with a 5.92 ERA in 55 games. 10 of them starts.
Kelvin Herrera, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, and Mike Minor are going to be Free Agents. Herrera and Moose are the main priorities. Not sure how much money we are going to have to spend though.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Well lost game 2 to Houston last 2-1 on a walk off hit from Freddie Davenport. Michael Wacha was outstanding going 7 innings and striking out 9 in the process, but the offense let him down. We were down 1-0 in the 9th when Matt Carpenter blasted his 2nd homerun of the season to tie the game at 1. Holliday and Grichuk followed that up with back to back singles, but Peralta flew out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 9th, Jordan Walden allowed two hits and then after a sacrifice bunt, walked the next hitter to load the bases with one out, in hopes of getting a double play. But Davenport came up and on a 2-2 count, got a hanging slider that he hit into right field for the walkoff single.
Next up its 4 on the road vs the Giants.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Franchise Discussion Thread
Just got the OSFM roster downloaded and got my franchise started. Going to be playing as the D-backs this year (which is good as I don't think I saw any other D-Backs franchises scrolling through this thread). Arizona hasn't had a winning season since their early playoff departure in 2011, so I am hoping to turn that around. My roster has a lot of solid young players but isn't quite there yet as far as competing for the division. So with only an outside shot at being competitive for 2017, I figure this first season will mainly be to figure out who my centerpieces are as far as gearing up for a World Series run in 2018. Here is my roster outlook heading in to Spring Training:
Starters
I think for the most part I have the makings of a solid pitching staff already assembled. Greinke is locked up for big money for 5 years, and at 33 years old with A potential he figures to be solid for at least 2-3 of them. After that, I have a glut of young guys that should develop into at least decent contributors - Taijuan Walker, Robbie Ray, Shelby Miller, Pat Corbin, Archie Bradley, Braden Shipley, and Anthony Banda are all age 23-27 with at least B potential. I figure after a full season in 2017 I can see where I stand with these guys. I'm using an 8-man rotation for Spring Training so that I can both limit innings and get a solid look at all of them. Anyone not making the rotation has a shot at the bullpen. I also have 2 de la Rosa's in camp (Rubby and Jorge) that are in the mix for swingman/spot starter roles.
Bullpen
Fernando Rodney is the closer for now, but at age 40, 72 overall, A potential, I'll be looking to trade him to the first team who will take him. Even if we end up competing in '17, the odds of him being a shutdown closer for the entire season are slim. After him I've got some average guys like Andrew Chafin, Randall Delgado, and JJ Hoover who figure to hold down my 7th and 8th inning roles for the time being. I mentioned by logjam of pitching potential among my starters above - I am hoping one of the odd men out will step up and become my closer or else I will likely have to find one in free agency next year.
Catchers
I currently have a wide-open field at catcher to begin camp. Oscar Hernandez, Chris Iannetta, Chris Herrmann, and Jeff Mathis are all between 68-71 with C potential. None of them are considered a long-term solution but I need two of them to distinguish themselves for my opening day roster. Iannetta also has potential to stick as a pinch-hitter if he mashes on lefties like he is supposed to.
Infield
Goldschmidt obviously is guaranteed first base. He is locked up for two more years before he will command big money in free agency (all the more reason to aim for competing in 2018). Jake Lamb hit 29 homers in 2016 and is also all but guaranteed to be my opening day third baseman. I have more of a competition up the middle with Brandon Drury, Ketel Marte, Nick Ahmed, and Chris Owings all in the mix for 2B/SS. Drury can't play short so I am hoping he can win the second base job as he has the best bat of the bunch. Otherwise the competition is open. I should break camp with at least 3 of the 4 guys as I'll need a reserve infielder to fill out my bench. Daniel Descalso is also in camp mainly to spell Goldschmidt at first and limit his innings, but he also has an outside shot to make the team should he hit well enough.
Outfield
My outfield looks to be pretty set with A.J. Pollock, Yasmany Tomas, and David Peralta all projected to be solid contributors and middle of the order hitters. Gregor Blanco and Jeremy Hazelbaker will compete for the fourth outfield spot. Oswaldo Arcia also has a shot but figures to be more of a bat off the bench than a fourth outfielder if he makes the team.
Considering I believe this team is only a year away, I'll be looking to plug my glaring roster holes more through short-term trades and free agency than scouting and player development. I figure I'll have a competitive pitching staff by 2018 with the youngsters I have, so the only glaring roster holes would be catcher and middle infield (Drury, Marte, Ahmed, and Owings are all in the 70's with C potential). I may also need to address the back end of the bullpen if my young starters can't end up filling those roles.
I'm going to play every game but sim to the end if the score becomes too wide (4 runs or more). No need to waste time on mop-up games. Hopefully I'll have the patience to make decent progress this year. From the looks of this thread I have some catching up to do.Comment
