Well, I give up. I decided to just bunt using the quick manage menu. No more bunting into double plays!

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
If you like to keep your stats, i would caution against that. Im not saying it will definitely happen, but going into Quick Manage, and returning to live play has been known to erase, or even double stats in the box score. It may work fine many times, then suddenly mess stats up. (It not only messes the box score stats up, but those stats, or lack thereof, also go on your season stats). Or, it might never mess up for you, but you do it at your own risk, for sure. Just trying to caution you. Something to think about!Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
When sacrifice bunting I was holding the L-stick to the left or right, or neutral and that would lead to those types of bunts. I have since tried holding it straight down to see if it will deaden the ball, and it has two or three times I've tried it, but that is a very small sample size.
Also when sacrifice bunting I wait until the pitcher is in his motion before squaring around. I don't while he's set, and definitely not after release as that leads to drag bunting/bunting for a hit, which is a whole different animal.
Anyways, I wanted to share that to start to see if that is similar to what others are seeing. I also wanted to see if other's have tried holding down on the L-stick and seeing if that helps deaden the ball. Like I said my sample size is too small to make any definitive claims.
The best bunt i had all year was a bunt for base hit (because he has speed and he was hitting about .120 at the times so i didn't have much to lose.) I pulled diagonally down and left at an angle and the bunt was perfectly deadened down the 3rd base line. They had no chance to get him. I have tried that since then with no luck. So maybe its just random? Just not sure yet either.Comment

Its a good idea. However....

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
I usually pull the stick down in an effort to deaden it, and it seems like it had worked "better" in the small sample, but still shoots a pretty solid grounder to first or third at times. So im not sure what to make of it either yet.

Just trying to see if higher bunt rated hitters are able to provide better sacrifice bunts when pulling the stick down, or if it's just random?
Thanks for trying it out and providing feedback.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Yes, I do the same thing. And I check and haven't had it happen. Not saying it doesn't just hasn't happened to me.Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
Just out of curiosity, when pulling the stick down and the bunts still led to a solid grounder to first or third, what was the bunt rating of the batter?

The other player was (Escobar i think is his name?) from the Royals. He was a very highly rated bunter, maybe even the highest in the game, and these were done in practice mode.
I do not remember their exact bunt ratings, and i am away from the PS4 during the day. But they were players who should bunt well. I probably attempted 30 or 40 bunts with both players in practice mode. I will probably try again very soon as well.
I switched to a couple of badly rated bunters and attempted a few, and didn't see much, if any, difference, except the low-rated bunters seemed to foul off more bunts. This was a very low sample size however.Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
The only two players i tried it with were highly rated. Deshields has been used several times in actual games with hard-hit results, but he is the one who also laid down a perfect bunt one game when i desperately needed it.

Yeah I'm guessing that the bunt rating just relates to popping up the bunt or bunting foul, or I guess even missing, versus that of laying down a better bunt than that of a lower rated bunter.
It was worth a shot....I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
I have screenshots of one of the times it happened if you're interested. It was pretty crazy. It can really mess stats up without even realizing it if you're not paying close attention. I would recommend always keeping a back up save of the previous day, just in case. If you auto-save and it happens, there's nothing you can do.Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
I'm just going to house rule it and hope they do some fixin' in next years game. Going to QUICK MANAGE seems to work for me. As far as the CPU just gonna house rule it (take the play at first) and not worry about it, or let it frustrate me. It's a workaround that works for me.Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
I tried this experiment and..................failed. I just think it's hardwired (admittedly) into the game and it's just about impossible to rectify. I almost wore out a controller trying just about everything (sorta).

I house rule it also while on defense. If the runner on first has a speed rating of 20 or below then I allow myself to think about taking the chance at second. If higher than 20 I only take the out at first. Seems that each time the CPU has attempted to throw to second, my runner had a low speed rating but I don't recall with 100% certainty.
Maybe next year, if nothing else they can put a bunt power slider in the game to allow those who play offline to lower it to help. Of course, perfect world would be to lower the exit velocity off the bat during bunts.
Am I the only one that thinks the game treats bunts like check swings? Or maybe a better comparison is even sacrifice bunts are treated as drag bunts?I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
Sometimes, I wonder if the power rating isn't a bigger factor. For example, on my Marlins squad (carryover in year 14 so almost all fictionals), I have no good bunters and none of the pitchers have high bunt ratings (highest is Boeve at 59, then Kane at 24 and the rest are single digit if not literally 0).
With the pull-back method, they can get it down reasonably well. Sometimes, the SH doesn't get counted in stats for whatever reason, but I track it and I'm significantly above MLB average - but that's probably partly because I call for it significantly above MLB average as well.
Edit: I found this in one of Nolan's early posts:
Runner on 1st, 0 outs ------------79% success
Runner on 1st, 1 out --------------79%
Runner on 2nd, 0 out -------------88%
Runners on 1st & 2nd, 0 out --76%
Runners on 1st & 2nd, 1 out --68%
Runners on 1st & 3rd, 1 out ---65%
I will start tracking these across franchises for both myself and CPU.
Granted, if you asking about/for Zone players, then it probably wouldn't matter what I get since it's not what you're seeking.
ALL my pitchers in my Marlins team above have pretty much 0 power and they have the least problems getting the kind of bunts most want to see for sacrifices.Last edited by KBLover; 07-26-2018, 10:58 AM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Why is every bunt a rocket this year?
I know this wasn't asked of me, but I do a lot of bunting as I like to mix some small ball when my big hitters aren't around in the lineup.

Since I don't know if the game is this nuanced with it's bunt engine, I will average these: 75.8%

Actually, I was thinking that the Power rating was more of an indication than the bunting ratings and this might be along the same line of thought.
ALL my pitchers in my Marlins team above have pretty much 0 power and they have the least problems getting the kind of bunts most want to see for sacrifices.
Question for anyone who can try now, (I'll try when I get home), can someone try to bunt but lower the power slider and maybe solid hits slider and see if that changes anything?
If we can find a "cause" then we can possibly submit to SDS for evaluation/correction.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
