Cardinals Exclusive Negotiation Period Free Agents

The exclusive negotiation period has begun and the Cardinals have only 4 players to make a decision in regards to trying to get them to re-sign or letting them hit the open market.

    SP - Jack Flaherty
    SP - Carlos Martinez
    RP - Pedro Baez
    OF - Stephen Piscotty

Out of the 4, the only two the Cardinals are likely to negotiate with are Flaherty and Martinez. Baez and Piscotty were both extremely serviceable last year, but the Cardinals will let them hit the open market to see what the market sets their price.

    Jack Flaherty
    Seeking 4 years @ $17.3MM per year

The Cardinals had all the expectation in the world that Flaherty would one day be the successor to Wainwright, Wacha, and Martinez to become the Ace of the staff, but injuries have set the 30 year old back and now the club is comfortable with Kyle Funkhouser being the ace of the staff, despite his early season struggles this past season.

The Cardinals do expect to have some discussion with Flaherty but I don't see them meeting his asking price until they are "forced" to. Could be a case where the Cardinals offer him a one year deal to reset his value, if he's able to get thru a season completely healthy.

    Carlos Martinez
    Seeking 3 years @ $9MM per year

Carlos Martinez may have been the most consistent starter in the rotation in 2024. The 34 year old didn't have the best win/loss record (14-11), but his ERA was just slightly over 3, at 3.05 for the season. The Cardinals didn't know what Martinez would seek in free agency, as he made over $12MM last year, and the fact that he's willing to take a discount after having another solid season will likely mean the two sides reach an agreement without him ever hitting the open market.

    Stephen Piscotty
    Seeking 2 years @ $4.5MM per year

Stephen Piscotty was brought in to help the Cardinals make a run at the postseason, but unfortunately that run never materialized. Still, Piscotty was solid with the Cardinals and provided a much needed RBI threat in the lineup that struggled to do so at times. Still, Piscotty is in the situation where he's part of a crowded outfield and while he plays first base as well, really doesn't have a home on a club that doesn't use the DH. The Cardinals will likely let Piscotty hit the open market and see where things go from there. With the addition of a 26th man this year, its possible the Cardinals re-sign him, but highly unlikely.

    Pedro Baez
    Seeking 1 year @ $3MM per year

It could be argued that aside from Roberto Osuna, Pedro Baez was the most consistent arm in the bullpen last year. The bullpen lacked consistency all season as the Cardinals continued to plug and play guys in different roles all year. Baez was solid though, being at times a bridge to the 7th inning guy, the 7th inning guy, or the guy that gets the ball to the closer. Still Baez's age (37) is a concern for the Cardinals and they will most likely let him hit the market to see how sought after he is and the price other clubs are willing to pay. Still though, $3MM for another season like 2024 is a bargain.

So what will the front office do in regards to these 4 players? We will find out over the next 5 days.

Cardinals pick up club option on Patrick Wisdom

The Cardinals have exercised their club option on 3B Patrick Wisdom for $15.7MM this season. Wisdom, who is coming off a year where he missed the bulk of it due to a broken hand, now has to exercise his player option of the deal. It is expected however that Wisdom will decline the deal in hopes for a bigger payday, which is certainly expected.

Wisdom was the National League MVP in 2023 and was on pace to be in contention to repeat when he was injured with a broken hand in June. Wisdom returned in September but never found his groove at the plate and once the playoffs were out of reach as benched in favor of highly touted prospect Nolan Gorman.

Having Patrick Wisdom back in the 4 hole for this lineup would be a huge lift to an offense that struggled to drive in runs last year with Wisdom out, and Fabregas as well.

Cardinals re-sign Carlos Martinez to 3 year deal

The Cardinals have re-signed Carlos Martinez to a 3 year deal worth $25.5MM ($8.5MM per year) The deal does include a mutual option on the 3rd year.

Martinez is expected to be the 3rd or 4th arm in the rotation this season, but his consistency last year made him a high priority for the Cardinals this offseason, especially considering it looks more and more like the Cardinals and Jack Flaherty aren't going to be able to reach any type of contract prior to the end of the exclusive negotiating period.

Kolten Wong and Patrick Wisdom decline their player options

Patrick Wisdom and Kolten Wong have both declined their player options and will file for free agency.

It was expected that Patrick Wisdom would opt out of the contract that would pay him nearly $16MM in 2025 in hopes of landing a bigger payday now that he has reached 33 years of age (will be 34 in 2025). Wisdom is looking for $30+MM per year, so expect the Cardinals to throw out a qualifying offer.

What wasn't expected was Kolten Wong to opt out of his contract. Wong will file for free agency is said to be seeking around $13MM per year.

The Cardinals now have 3 days left in the exclusive negotiating period to make a deal with these two priority pieces of their club, along with Jack Flaherty who isn't budging on his asking price.

The Cardinals could have a significantly new look in 2025 if they are unable to secure a deal with these players.

            Cardinals re-sign Kolten Wong

The Cardinals and Kolten Wong have agreed to a 2 year deal worth $28MM.

Wong is coming off a season that saw him hit 20 homeruns to go along with a .285 average, .395 OBP, and finish 2nd in the majors in walks drawn with 111.

Wong was one of two very key pieces for the Cardinals this offseason as they now will turn their full attention to re-signing Patrick Wisdom.

Cardinals sign Adam Cimber to one year deal

The Cardinals have made their first actual free agent signing, by agreeing to a one year deal with RHP Adam Cimber. Cimber will earn $5.5MM next season and is the first step in the Cardinals looking to rebuild their bullpen.

The Cardinals bullpen was a sore spot last season so this addition will hope to remedy that issue. It's expected the Cardinals will have more roster movement in terms of the bullpen and trying re-establish a solid bullpen to help close out games.

Cimber pitched for the Twins last year earning 4 saves, 12 holds and pitched to a 4.13 ERA.

Patrick Wisdom declines Qualifying Offer...will hit the open market

In news that should come as no surprise to anyone, Patrick Wisdom has declined the Cardinals qualifying offer and will now officially hit the open market.

Wisdom who declined his player option as expected, was offered a qualifying offer (1 year @ $21.7M) but just turned it down as well. Wisdom is seeking $30+MM per season and now the Cardinals will have to contend with 29 other clubs to keep the former National League MVP on the roster.

Wisdom is considered the best free agent on the open market but he joins others who declined their QO as well:

                OF - Ronald Acuna Jr
                3B - Alex Bregman
                RF - Austin Hays
                SP - Mackenzie Gore
                2B - Tyler Wade
                RF - Lewis Brinson
                SS - Rafael Devers
                CF - Leody Taveras

Things are about to get very busy this offseason.

A's sign Addison Russell to 3 year deal

The defending World Series Champions are not just sitting back and celebrating their championship, as they have signed SS Addison Russell to a 3 year $32.10MM deal.

Russell has spent his entire 9 year career with the Cubs and slashed .260/.331/.429 with 17 homeruns and 63 RBI's.

The 31 year old is still considered one of the better gloves at the shortstop position in baseball.

Cardinals and Patrick Wisdom agree to 2 year deal

The Cardinals and Patrick Wisdom have agreed to a 2 year $55MM deal with a player option for the 2nd year.

Wisdom who was looking for 4+ years at $31MM per year, gave the Cardinals a discount and after about a week on the open market decided that he didn't want to leave the organization and come back and try to put a run together for the playoffs. Wisdom had offers from Yankees and Astros that he was considering when he agreed to the Cardinals offer.

The player option allows Wisdom the opportunity to opt out of his contract next season should the Cardinals decide they want to roll with highly touted prospect Nolan Gorman at 3rd.

But for next year, the Cardinals have their offense in place and at least on paper it should be extremely potent with both Wisdom and Fabregas back in the lineup.

Now the Cardinals can stop worrying about a plan B at 3rd base and cleanup hitter, and focus on putting together the pieces necessary to return not only to October baseball, but a World Series.

Cardinals listening to trade offers for Trevor Rosenthal

The Cardinals have put out a memo to the other 29 clubs that they are willing to listen to offers for RHP Trevor Rosenthal.

The soon to be 35 year old, lost the his role of closer last year after struggling to close out games and was replaced by Roberto Osuna who earned 27 saves in 28 opportunities. Rosenthal was at first the set up man and then moved to relief duties and replaced by a combo of Zack Burdi and Jordan Hicks.

Rosenthal has 2 years left on his deal at a value of $11.1MM per season.

One thing is he's the 8th place hitter so he's usually pitched around to get to the pitcher.

And the other, is for some reason with Wong, I can check swing more easily with him than others, so I'm get more leeway when swinging at bad pitches.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
