Cardinals drop 3 of 4 to Brewers...now 6 games back in wildcard

The Cardinals dropped 3 of 4 against the Brewers in Milwaukee to fall to 6 games behind in the wildcard.

The offense was completely lifeless in this series only scoring 5 runs in the 4 games, and twice being shutout.

The Cardinals will now head to New York to face the Mets for 3 games starting on Monday.

Cardinals 5 1/2 games back of wildcard with 18 left to play

The Cardinals won the series opener against the Mets in Queens 4-3 to move to within 5 1/2 games of the idle Rockies for the 2nd wildcard spot. The Cardinals now have 18 games left on the regular season.

The Cardinals had won 8 straight before losing 3 of 4 to the Central division leading Brewers in Milwaukee over the weekend. The Cardinals would greatly benefit from another substantial winning streak as they have several teams in contention with them for the National League wildcard.

        Cardinals remaining schedule:

        3 @ NYM
        3 @ CIN
        3 VS ARI
        3 VS CHC
        3 @ PIT
        3 @ SD

The Reds, Cubs, and Padres are all teams that the Cardinals are contending with for the National League wildcard, along with the Braves, Dodgers, and Rockies.

Do the Cardinals have one more push left in them, or will they play .500 ball over the final 18 as they have most of the season? We will find out over the next 3 weeks.

Blue Jays expose Cleveland's weaknesses in Progressive Field sweep

Cleveland has been a good team to watch this year. After scraping into the post-season 3 out of the past 5 years and just barely missing them the other two, the Indians made moves to solidify the middle of their lineup. That, combined with the further development of some key prospects, has propelled them to a very hot start of the season.

Things were looking good. Cleveland looked ready to take on the true monster teams that have dominated them in the playoffs in years past. No better litmus test then the king of the monster teams, the Toronto Blue Jays. The wind was blowing in the Indians favour too. Toronto was on the tail end of a grueling road trip that saw them struggle. The Blue Jays front office was distracted with scrambling to get information on what would end up being a botched draft for them, a definite downer that could resound throughout the organization. Cleveland was to face Toronto's two worst starting pitchers, Alfonso Baez and Ron Gilmore, both who had been shaky in their past two starts. The scent of blood was in the air, and Cleveland was hungry.

Things started out well for them too. Their greatest challenge on paper was Tuesday's starter, the lefty Adam McMullan. Forming the second part of a powerful 1-2 punch at the top of the Jay's rotation, McMullan has been strong this year, if performing slightly under expectations. His advanced stats have been good though, so expecting him to continue to underperform would have been a mistake for the Indians. Luckily, their batters didn't have to face him for long, as a rain delay took both starters out early. However, while the Blue Jays got to trot out the likes of Aaron McKenna, the rain delay exposed the Indians' greatest weakness: their bullpen. Things got ugly quickly.

Conditions were ideal for game two as well. Alfonso Baez was a callup due to injury, with the consistent Fernando Chavez is out for the season with a fractured skull. Baez is the antithesis of Chavez. Sure he can strike guys out with a good 98 MPH fastball and changeup combo, but he struggles to find the zone and his supporting pitches are not MLB ready. His last two outings were disasters involving early exits, and rumours were swirling around him about being sent back down to AAA. Meanwhile Cleveland was trotting out Mike Minor to the mound, a pitcher with a history of giving the Jays trouble.

Again, things started well. Baez was able to keep guys of base, but he couldn't stop the long ball, as Cleveland were just torching any high fastball or curveball Baez threw. Meanwhile the Jays lineup was settling into their traditional grind, hoping to work the count and get to that weak bullpen ASAP. But then control became an issue. Not for Baez, but for Minor. The walks were fine, but more than a few misses right down the heart of the plate are mistakes that the Blue Jays will never leave unpunished. Meanwhile, Baez settled into a groove after he and (Catcher Jonathon) Blanco had figured out what the Indians were hitting. Baez ended up going 8 strong, a stronger outing than even the Blue Jays were hoping for, and now Cleveland had to head into the third match facing a potential sweep at home.

Then the Jays offence showed their true depth and power. Ron Gilmore was fine, giving the Jays 6 decent innings, but he could have been terrible and it wouldn't have mattered. Any game where a team puts up 26 runs, they are likely going to win.

So what happened? How could a team as hot as Cleveland get not only swept, but so thoroughly embarrassed? Well the answer lies in three places. The most obvious answer is that the Indians pitching staff needs to improve. There is no doubt that if they're going to survive the post-season, they need another marquee starter, along with more skill, depth, and variety in their bullpen. Some of it can also be blamed on luck. A bad outing by Mike Minor was something no-one could have predicted. But the real crux of the problem is the one I want to talk about: scouting.

The Jays are very familiar with the Indians' lineup, especially the core of CF Leon Huff, 1B Eric Hosmer, and 3B Harrison Crockett. The Jays abused this knowledge and utilized the shift to perfection, while also pitching smartly throughout the series. There were some odd shifts, some even that traditional shift gurus would raise an eyebrow at (I rarely if ever use the suggested shifts), but the proof is in the pudding. Sure, the Indians managed to score 8 runs over the series, but 6 of them were solo shot home runs. The Indians hit the ball hard all series long, but their hitting is predictable, and it was that combined with a failure of pitching that allowed the Blue Jays to embarrass them so thoroughly.

Dodgers drop 2 out of 3 in San Francisco.
Manny Machado feasted on the Dodgers pitching staff homering in each game.

Game 1: Game 1 saw the Dodgers waste an outstanding performance by Bellinger who went 4 for 5 with 2 HRs and a double along with 3 RBIs, dropping the game 6-5. The Dodgers held a 4-0 lead after 2 innings but Ross Stripling could not keep it together much longer, and the coaching staff admits they waited to long to yank him from the game. Stripling was credited with the loss for the Dodgers with Melancon picking up the win and Will Smith earning the save.

Game: The lone Dodgers win of the series came by a score of 4-2. Colton Stern earned the win for the Dodgers lasting 7 innings and Kenley Jansen picked up save #31 on the year. Tyler Beede took the loss for the Giants.

Game 3: The Giants earned 3 quick runs in the 1st inning while the Dodgers remained hitless until the top of the 7th picking up 3 runs on 3 hits thanks to a Chapman 3 run HR. The game would finish without the Dodgers managing anything further offensively and dropping the game 6-3. Clayton Kershaw earned the loss for the Dodgers with Johnny Cueto and Smith notching the win and save respectively.

Next up for the Dodgers is a 9 game home stand seeing the Braves, Nationals and Astros all visiting Chavez Ravine.

26 runs? Man I would have loved to see that box score.

Cardinals split series with Mets...remain 6 1/2 back of wildcard

The Cardinals split their 4 game series with the Mets in Queens to slip to 6 1/2 games back with 15 left to play. While the Cardinals are not mathematically eliminated, they will need at least a minor miracle to get into the postseason this year, as the Rockies, Cubs, Reds, Padres, and Braves are all ahead of them in the wildcard race.

The offense for the Cardinals has disappeared, especially from Patrick Wisdom, Brendan McKay, Stephen Piscotty, and Harrison Bader, prompting manager Mike Matheny to play younger guys Thursday afternoon, a game in which the Cardinals won 5-1, while generating 10 hits and drawing 6 walks.

The pitching for the Cardinals was decent, but they were prone to the homerun ball as the staff gave up a combined 9 homeruns in the 4 games. The biggest bright spot was that Funkhouser continued his late season dominance, as he thru a complete game Thursday afternoon giving up a run on 4 hits and fanning 14.

The Cardinals will travel from New York to Cincinnati for a huge 3 game weekend series against the Reds. The Cardinals almost need a sweep, but they certainly need to win this series if they have any hopes of staying mathematically in the race.

                  MountUrCastle's Kansas City Rebuild

Hi, I am MountUrCastle, and I suck at keeping interest in a franchise mode for too long.

As a result, I will be starting this 3rd rebuild with set guidelines for when and how I will be writing up progress:
-During the first 3 years of the rebuild, critical situations will be on. I will play situations that interest me which will serve as game writeups.
-The side of the game that interest me the most (the transaction/drafting/signing portion) will get individual writeups as well which will vary in content except for 4 main topics: roster overview at the start of a season, the draft, the deadline, and the offseason. This will be the meat of the rebuild

I am solely codifying this here because part of the reason I would lose interest is I had no structure.

                    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Kansas City Royals sign 3-time all-star, 2-time World Series winner Ben Zobrist to 1 year, 10 million dollar contract

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The Kansas City Royals announced today they have come to terms on a 1 year, 10 million dollar agreement with former Cubs and Royals star Ben Zobrist, bringing the talented player back to the city he first won a world series with. Zobrist, 37, was let go as a free agent by the Cubs in 2019, after a .260 batting average and a .358/.313/.671 slash line.

As a member of the Cubs, he was voted the world series MVP in which the Cubs had won their first world series in over a century. and made the all-star game in that same season.

Team president Scott Leius Jr. told the press this morning that "The Royals organization is extremely happy to have a classy, talented player like Ben back in the clubhouse and organization. We look forward to seeing what Ben can do out on the diamond for us this year."

Pitching shines, bats falter as Luis Robert and the White Sox walk off the Royals, 2-1

CHICAGO, IL. - The Royals saw a very impressive combined performance from their pitching staff this evening, but did not get the support as the White Sox won the game in extras off a Luis Robert walk-off home run.

Despite an impressive showing from Junis, Hill, Rosenthal and Kennedy, the main story of the night was the Royals bats, who managed to muster only 6 hits in 12 innings in a night that saw 4 players go 0-5 on the plate. Whit Merrifield was responsible for the only RBI for the royals on the night, which came on a double that scored Ryan O'Hearn from second base.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 12th, Luis Robert squared up an Ian Kennedy changeup that just missed the mark and soared out to the left side bleachers.

When asked about the game and the batting struggles, Ben Zobrist stated "Obviously us on the team aren't happy about our performance. We were missing our mark the whole game, and (Carlos) Rodon was throwing very good out there. Just disappointing that we couldn't get our guys the run support they deserved." Ben Zobrist went 0-2 on the plate but walked 3 times.

The Royals are 9-9, placing them 4th in the AL Central.

San Diego Padres Spring Training Report

A lot of positions remain open and battles to be had in what should be a pivotal spring training for the friars. With the return of brown, the fanbase has been re-energized! Now lets look into the positional battles.

                        Starting Pitching:

                        The Locks:
                        Chris Paddack
                        Garrett Richards
                        Zach Davies

Assuming everything goes as planned for these three, they should occupy the top half of the rotation. Spots 4 and 5 have a plethora of candidates which we will dive into.

                        The Veterans:
                        Dinelson Lamet
                        Joey Luchessi

The Second Year High Upside Arms:
                        Cal Quantrill
                        Adrian Morejon
                        Michael Baez
                        Ronald Bolanos

                        The Non-Roster Invitees:
                        Jerad Eickhoff
                        Chase Johnson
                        Jimmy Yacobonis
                        Chih-Wei Hu

                        The Uber Prospects:
                        MacKenzie Gore
                        Luis Patino

The big question here is which way will the Friars choose to go, and which pitchers will break out. Are the big two arms in Gore and Patino ready to step up? Will Dinelson Lamet bounce back from Tommy John surgery and show is promise with his wipe out slider? Will the young prospects of Quantrill, Morejon or Baez step up? Or will Jered Eickhoff show he still has nasty stuff and live up to the potential?

                        The Bullpen:
The absolute strength of this team. The Padres enter the 2020 season with arguably the best, and deepest bullpen in all of baseball. The Padres have so any arms that their AAA bullpen will be better than some of the MLB teams pens to say the least.

                        The Candidates:
                        Kirby Yates
                        Emilio Pagan
                        Craig Stammen
                        Drew Pomeranz
                        Matt Strahm
                        Jose Castillo
                        Andres Munoz
                        Pierce Johnson
                        Trey Wingenter
                        Gerardo Reyes
                        Luis Perdomo
                        David Bednar
                        Javy Guerra
                        Kyle Barraclough

And of course, whoever doesn’t make the rotation can be sent to the pen as a long relief pitcher/mop up duty role. Young rookies from last year such as Adrian Morejon, Michel Baez and Cal Quantrill all had bullpen roles throughout the season.

Now onto the positional players. Lets take a look into the position battles that may lay ahead.

                        Catchers:
Francisco Mejia vs Austin Hedges. The battle here will be do the Padres go with the bat or the glove? Hedges is highly regarded as being one of the best defensive catchers in the game, however has typically been one of the worst hitters in the history of the game. Francisco Mejia has the highly touted bat and insiders believe the inside track to win the starting job out of spring training.

                        First Base:
Eric Hosmer and Josh Naylor. Possible Platoon with Wil Myers?

                        Second Base:
Jurickson Profar vs Greg Garcia vs Esteban Quiroz

                        Third Base:
Manny Machado

                        Short Stop:
                        Fernando Tatis

                        LF:
                        Tommy Pham

                        CF:
Trent Grisham vs Franchy Cordero vs Taylor Trammell. With the Padres trading Manuel Margot the Rays in the off-season, the battle for CF is now open. Will Taylor Trammel force the Padres hand? Is he ready for opening day?

                        RF:
Wil Myers vs Franchy Cordero Vs Abraham Almonte

Kansas City Selects 7 in 2019 MLB Draft

SECAUCUS, N.J. - The Royals made 7 selections in this year's MLB draft, highlighted by the 2nd overall pick in the first round.

Much was ado about their first-round pick this year, as many pundits had them taking catcher and Georgia star Allen Willett at the 2-hole this year, while reports from the twitter-sphere suggested they were leaning towards high school pitching phenom Ray Mercer. Both players projected as MLB talents as early as 2021 as well as the respective best players at their positions in the draft and split the scouting staff down the middle.

When the draft kicked off and the Orioles selected starter Stephen Kim first overall, it didn't help make the Royals decision any easier. They went to the wire with their pick until they finally selected Allen Willett, the Mississippi born catching wunderkind. Willett, 22, already has MLB-level contact, plate vision, and defensive tools required as a catcher to succeed. A durable, productive talent, Willett projects to make the MLB as early as next September, and headlines a talent pool that includes Kentucky standout Sam Rideout, outfielder Jay Bronson, catcher/first basemen Kurt Massey, third basemen Jonas Santos, pitcher Guillermo Pereria, and pitcher Thomas Burnside.

The Royals view Willett as the third part of a catching hydra- between Joey Bart (San Francisco), Adley Rutschmann (Baltimore) and Willett, they believe they have the future of catching in their hands.

With Salvador Perez's days already rumored to be numbered in Kansas, does Willet's acquisition potentially jumpstart a move from the Royals? Perez, 28, is having another great season hitting .283 with a slash of .309/.493/.801. While the club would like to retain his talent and play both he and Willett in the future, Perez is a free agent in 2020 and the Royals don't see themselves as competitors in the foreseeable future. While a move may not come at the deadline, it becomes increasingly likely that we see him move at some point.

Lopez, Kennedy combine for 14 strikeouts, Royals win against the Indians 4-0

CLEVELAND, OH - Jorge Lopez dazzled on the mound tonight, striking out 12 and pitching 8 clean innings allowing just 2 hits for the Royals win last night. Carrying a no-hitter and walking just one into the 7th until a Franmil Reyes bloop single fell in the left-field gap, the Indians simply could not hit what Lopez was throwing them. When Lopez was finally gassed, Kennedy came in and shut the game down on strikes.

Salvador Perez, Maikel Franco, and Alex Gordon all went 2-4, with Salvador Perez blasting a home run in the 4th to put the Royals up 2-0. Alex Gordon sealed the game in the 8th, hitting a 2 RBI triple to put them up 4-0.

The Royals improve to 45-55 on the season, putting them 4th in the AL Central and 11th in the entire AL.

Top performs so far are Josh Naylor and Franchy Cordero, who are both battling for opening day roster spots. Manny Machado is also on a tear to start the spring hitting .500 (4-8) with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Josh Naylor is also hitting .500 (4-8) with 1 home run and 3 RBI. Jerad Eickhoff and Adrian Morejon have had a rough first outing both with an ERA of 18.00. The backend of the Padres bullpen through 2 games has been as advertised with Munoz, Pagan, and Yates all throwing 1 perfect inning with 2 K's each.

note: the Royals did not make any deadline moves this year.
Royals win nailbiter against Boston, have now won 7 straight

BOSTON, MA - It was a close one at Fenway last night, as the Royals exploded in the 7th inning to narrowly win against the Red Sox.

Merrifield, Zobrist, and Gutierrez had big nights, having a combined 2 RBI, 2 hits apiece and walking 3 times in total. The Royals were losing up until the 7th, in which Perez, Franco, and O'Hearn got to Matt Barnes who came in to relieve David Price.

When asked about the winning streak, team star Whit Merrifield said "We're simply clicking. Prior in the season it felt like either our bats were hot or our pitching was hot, and one never showed up with the other. It feels good to give Skoglund and the boys some support and to be hitting well down the stretch". Merrifield, 30, leads the Royals in batting average for starters.
