So, here we are just now entering the dog days of August. With four months of the 2020 season complete, it is time to give you all an in-depth inside look into my franchises season to this point.
We start with the division standings. starting with the NL East.
The New York Mets find themselves in first place in the division entering August. They have pretty much had what you would call a stranglehold on the division up to this point. The Mets hold a record of 68-44 entering August.
Which allows them a slim four-game lead over the suddenly surging Washington Nationals (63-47). Who are now just a mere four games back of the first-place Mets
But don't think that there is not another team vying for division dominance. As the Phillies are just six games back of the Mets with a record of 60-48.
The Braves are in fourth place ten games back.
now let us move onto the NL Central.
The Chicago Cubs have maintained a chokehold on the division for a while now. they have a record of 67-44, and hold a commanding fifteen game lead over the division.
The closest any team has come to take them down was to get the lead
over the division down to just 12.5 games. The Reds are the team currently in second place in the division with a record of 51-58.
If the Cubs end up blowing this lead over the final two months of the season it will be a collapse of monumental proportions.
Onto the NL West.
The Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Dodgers have been battling out for first place almost every day of the season. Currently, the Diamondbacks find themselves up on top with a record of 72-40. The Rockies hold down the second-place spot just three and a half games back of the D-Backs with a record of 67-42. The Dodgers have been lagging in third place for the best part of the 2020 season with a record of 66-44.
These three teams have seen short periods when all teams were tied for the lead in the division. however every time the Diamondbacks have always been the ones to come out on top. We will have to see if they have what it takes to stay there until the end of the season.
now onto the NL Wild Card.
Currently, five teams are vying for the top two spots. At the top, you have the Colorado Rockies (67-62). then you have the Los Angeles Dodgers with a record of (66-44). The next three teams are all trying to take one or both of the top two teams down to secure a spot in the postseason.
First off we have the Washington Nationals. they have a record of 63-47 and are three games back of the Dodgers for the second-place slot. In fourth place, in the NL Wild Card race are the Philadelphia Phillies. With a record of 60-48. This puts them two games back of the Nationals and five games back of the second wild-card spot. Now you wouldn't normally at this time of year include a team more than say five or six games back of the top wild-card spot in any league. However, I feel the Braves who are nine games back could surprise a lot of people and make a push for this thing.
Now that we have the senior circuit out o the way, let us get on with the superior league the American League. Here we go.
Starting with the AL East.
The Boston Red Sox are the supreme leaders here as neither of their in-division rivals has been able to threaten them at any time this season.
The Red Sox lead the division with a record of 68-43. Which affords them a somewhat comfortable six and a half-game lead over second-place Toronto. Who has a record of 62-50 The Yankees hold down the third-place spot in the division with a record of 61-51. Which has them seven and a half games back of Boston?
This division was a dog fight down the stretch last year with these three teams beating up on each other for supremacy. Looks like we might be in for a repeat of that again this season.
Time to move on to the surprisingly upside down AL Central.
This division has been a fight between just two teams all year. Those teams being the Minnesota Twins, and the Kansas City Royals. Both teams at some point this season has either controlled the division or held a share of the lead. Currently entering August it is the Twins who hold the top spot with a record of 58-51. The Royals with a record of 57-52 find themselves just one game back of the division lead. The perennial division Champions, the Cleveland Indians seem to have fallen on hard times Finding themselves in third place, thirteen games back.
Now we come to the division which has been under one team's thumb for pretty much the entire season, the AL West. The two-time defending world champion Oakland Athletics has never been threatened in their ownership of the division. Even with the minor injuries to key players, and an abundance of trades and roster turn over this team continues to let the rest of baseball now that the world series will once again go through Oakland.
The A's have a 32 game lead over the second-place Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim. With that size of a lead at this point in the season, the A's have a magic number of 22 to clinch their third consecutive division title.
Finally, we come to the AL Wild Card race. there are four teams within just four and a half games of the top two slots. Those two top slots are currently being held down by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (62-50), and the Toronto Blue Jays (62-50).
The four teams that have an outside chance at taking one of those two top spots are as follows. The Yankees are just one game back of the second wild-card spot with a record of 62-51. Just a half-game behind them are the Seattle Mariners with a record of 60-51. At three and a half games back of the second wild-card spot are the Kansas City Royals with a record of 57-52.
The final team in this very tight race is the Houston Astros. They find themselves four and a half games behind with a record of 57-54.
Well there you have it... the entire MLB pennant race going into the dog days of August.
Just a couple of quick notes to pass along.
Rougned Odor (Oak) leads the AL MVP race. (.319 avg, 68 HR, 137 RBI)
Sean Manaea (Oak) leads the AL Cy Young race. (16-1, 1.65 E.R.A., 201 K)
Khris Davis (Oak) leads the AL batting title race with an average of .360.
Oh one more thing, Odor holds the MLB Single season record of 83 home runs hit in a single season. He is on pace to completely shatter his own record in just one season after he set the new record in 2019.
