MLB THE SHOW 19 - 2019 REGULAR SEASON

It has been a week since THE REDS last update post, it has been a busy week as minor league ball started and we have played 13 games in 7 days.

THE REDS embarked on their first road trip of the season, even though it was only one state over, to PA, still a road trip. THE REDS played a 4 game set vs the Pi-RATS. If you remember THE REDS took 2 of 3 versus Pittsburgh in the season series opener.

REGULAR SEASON - GAMES 7 THRU 10 at PIT

      REDS REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 3 - 3

      GAME 1 at PIT:
CIN SP Tyler Mahle vs PIT SP Jameson Taillon

Even though SP Mahle pitched well in his first game of the season last time out, Mahle still got a No Decision in THE REDS win over PIT at home. Mahle is looking to record his first WIN in 2019.

Mahle pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 5 HITS and STRIKING OUT 3. But THE REDS were unable to put any runs up before Mahle exited, so another NO Decision for THE RED'S young right hander.

The game would remain 0-0 until the top of the 9TH, when RF Yasiel Puig would plate RP Michael Lorenzen, who was pinch running for 1B Joey Votto. CP Raisel Iglesias would close out the bottom of the 9TH with a SAVE, his second. THE REDS WIN 1-0.

      GAME 2 at PIT:
CIN SP Sonny Gray vs PIT SP Chris Archer

This game would be a 15 inning affair and SP Sonny Gray would not get a COMPLETE GAME pitched. Instead, Gray would pitch 6 innings allowing 6 HITS and 1 RUN to score. Gray STRUCK OUT 7.

This game would stay 0 - 1 in favour of PIT until the 9TH when THE REDS would tie it 1-1. Then in the 14TH THE REDS would go up 2-1, but then CP Raisel Iglesias would get his first BLOWN SAVE and allow PIT to tie it 2-2. In the bottom of the 15TH RP David Hernandez would allow PIT to win it by giving up a double and then a RBI single. THE REDS LOSE 2-3.

      GAME 3 at PIT:
CIN SP Tanner Roark vs MIL SP Trevor Williams

SP Tanner Roark would start Game 3 looking to rebound from his hard luck loss to MIL in his first outing. Again, THE REDS pitching would do well, Roark went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 RUNS on 6 HITS and STRUCK OUT 5. THE REDS did tie it up in the top of the 6TH before Roark left the game.

In the 8TH THE REDS pushed 2 more RUNS across to go up 4-2. CP Raisel Iglesias coming off a BLOWN SAVE the night before was shaking in the 9TH, he allowed 1 RUN to score but hung in there to get his 3RD SAVE, and THE REDS WIN 4-3.

      GAME 4 at PIT:
CIN SP Anthony DeSclafani vs PIT SP Joe Musgrove

Hoping to get the win in game 4 and take the series, because taking a tie with the Pi-RATS is worse than kissing your sister, THE REDS and SP DeSclafani were determined to win.

It took until the top of the 5Th for THE REDS to score their first run and go up 1-0. But, after pitching the first 4 innings like a man on a mission, DeSclafani gave up 3 RUNS in the bottom of the 5TH. Pi-Rats go up 1-3.

In the top of the 8TH, Manager David Bell must have lit a fire up under his REDS as they scored 7 RUNS...YES!...7 RUNS, to storm ahead 8-3. The Pi-Rats scored a meaningless RUN in the 9TH. The Final...REDS 8...Pi-RATS 4.

THE REDS take 3 of 4 in PIT, they have tomorrow off and then 3 games at home vs Miami.

      REDS REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 6 - 4

      MINOR LEAGUE NOTES:

AAA Louisville BATS went 1 - 3 @ Toledo Mudhens in 4 games

      and

AA Chattanooga LOOKOUTS are 2 - 3 vs Montgomery Biscuits as they played 5 games.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Finally made it to the 2019 All-Star break with my Twins. We currently sit at 44-45, good for second place, 5.5 GB the White Sox. We are also 5.5 GB of the second WC spot, which is currently held by the Rays. The division is probably more likely, as there are about 4 teams ahead of us for the WC. Plus, the White Sox are in a tailspin. They lost Wellington Castillo who was hitting almost .340 and carrying their offense. Their pitching is also starting to fall apart and Ivan Nova was hurt right before the break and will miss about 2 months. My worry is the Indians have been coming on strong and are only 6 GB right now. We start the 2nd half in Cleveland. It should be a fun 3-team race in the 2nd half.

On the hitting side, Nelson Cruz has been a beast for me. He has a major league leading 44 HR and 83 RBI at the break, while hitting .293 and making the All-Star team. Eddie Rosario is also an All-Star having a career year hitting .310 with 20 HR and 50 RBI. I am currently missing CJ Cron (.276-7-25), Marwin Gonzalez (.320-13-39) and Jonathan Schoop (.284-8-25) from my lineup. Schoop missed almost two months, and then separated his shoulder in his first game back and will miss almost two more months.

On the pitching side, Blake Parker has made the All-Star team as my closer. He is 0-2 with 22 saves and an ERA of 2.97. Martin Perez (8-5, 3.71) and Jake Odorrizi (8-6, 5.42) lead my team with 8 wins a piece. Jose Berrios (6-4, 3.48) has been my most consistent starter with 13 of his 18 starts being of the quality variety. My bullpen has been decent but I still could use another lefty reliever to work in the middle of ballgames.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Hello everyone! I have frequently lurked this sub, among many others sports and baseball related but I finally figured that it was time to make an account. I do not claim to be good at any franchise mode, but it is the reason why I play most sports games, including OOTP. I think its really fun to try and turn around a rebuilding team to become a playoff contender and eventually win a championship. I have had a ton of fun with the Marlins this year, but I decided that my first documented account should be with the Royals, as I do feel they can be quickly turned around and made into a competitive team with much of the current roster.
I will most likely be updating this relatively frequently, as I am on break from university, and I plan to give monthly updates, as well as individual posts for the draft, trade deadline, and off-season. Now that introductions are out of the way, let's get right into it.

The 2018 Kansas City Royals finished last in the American League Central and had the second worst record in all of baseball with an abysmal record of 58-104. Our goal will be to construct the most efficient lineup, using runs created, isolated power, and walk to strikeout ratio, in the hopes of constructing a lineup that looks relatively similar and can get us into the playoffs in the next three seasons.
The lineup that MLB gave us
          Adalberto Mondesi (SS)
          Alex Gordon (LF)
          Whit Merrifield (2B)
          Jorge Soler (DH)
          Hunter Dozier (3B)
          Salvador Perez ©
          Ryan O’Hearn (1B)
          Jorge Bonifacio (RF)
          Brett Phillips (CF)
The Lineup that we are using
          Whit Merrifield (2B)
          Alex Gordon (LF)
          Jorge Bonifacio (RF)
          Hunter Dozier (3B)
          Jorge Soler (DH)
          Adalberto Mondesi (SS)
          Salvador Perez C)
          Brett Phillips (CF)
          Ryan O’Hearn (1B)
The primary changes include dropping Mondesi down to 6th in the lineup. Mondesi, only having a OBP of .307, suits better as a batter who is less likely to lead off during an inning. Merrifield has both a solid OBP, and steals bases frequently. Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler were also swapped as Dozier projects to produce more runs over the season.
Our starting rotation will only have two small changes, moving Mike Montgomery in front of Brad Keller, becoming the “ace” of our rotation. Danny Duffy will then move into the fourth spot, pushing Glenn Sparkman into the five spot. Our rotation will thus look as such.
          Starting rotation
          Mike Montgomery (L)
          Brad Keller [R]
          Jake Junis [R]
          Danny Duffy [L]
          Glenn Sparkman [R]
We made one free agent signing going into the simulation, signing Daniel Winkler, a Right-handed relief pitcher to help anchor the back hand of our bullpen, as he finished 2018 with a 1.19 Whip and a 2.44 FIP. He also has a 2.76 career FIP. We released closing pitcher Daniel Duarte in a corresponding move.
          Bullpen
          Jesse Hahn R
          Jacob Barnes R
          Kevin McCarthy R
          Bryan Flynn L
          Scott Barlow R
          Daniel Winker R
          Tim Hill L
          Ian Kennedy R
During this year, we do expect a minor improvement, and hope to finish anywhere from 65-70 wins. We hope to see good development from O’Hearn, Mondesi, Dozier, and Keller. At the deadline, we will try to unload some veterans to acquire interesting prospects. These players include Perez, Merrifield, Kennedy, and Winkler. By years end, we would like to have at least one top 50 prospect. Our scouting will focus mainly on pitching, and also finding a cornerstone infielder.
          March/April 2019:
The Royals find themselves slightly below .500 after the first month of the season, after sputtering to the end of the month, having lost 6 in a row and 7 of the last 9. At 13-17, they sit at third in the AL Central, eight games back of the division and 5 back of the second wild card spot. Their pitching has disappointed them so far, having a 4.74 team ERA, putting them 26th in the MLB and 11th in the American League. Jorge Soler has been a bright spot on the team, having an OPS of .936, placing him 13th in the American League. Whit Merrifield has also served well at the lead-off spot, with a slash line of .322/.378/.522. He also has a BB/K rate of .53, having only struck out 19 times, compared to 10 walks.

Cardinals split 2 game series with Indians

The Cardinals split their mini 2 game series with the Indians with the Cardinals winning the opener on Monday night and the Indians winning the Tuesday afternoon tilt.

Drew Harrington snapped out of his funk and pitched 6 2/3 innings of solid baseball allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 6. The bullpen was dominant as Andrew Miller, Jordan Hicks, and Zack Burdi pitched 2 1/3 innings of no hit, no run, no walk ball and combined to strike out 6 of the 7 hitters they faced.

Kyle Funkhouser still continues his struggles in the 2024 season as he was again knocked around, but thankfully got a no decision as the offense erased an early 6-0 deficit to tie the game. Unfortunately, the bullpen wasn't able to keep the Tribe at 6 runs, as Mike Mayers gave up a 3 run bomb to Mike Trout as the Indians went on to win 9-6.

The Cardinals are off on Wednesday and then travel to Chicago to take on the Cubs in a 4 game weekend series.

Cardinals activate Harrison Bader from IL

The Cardinals activated CF Harrison Bader from the 60 Day IL on Wednesday and he will be in the lineup as the Cardinals travel to Chicago to face the Cubs. Bader was lost in the 2 game of the season after suffering a fracture in his leg.

Bader re-joining the lineup should provide a spark as now the Cardinals have the speed at the top of the lineup they desire and constructed their lineup around. Also, Bader's defense will be another big plus for the Cardinals who were going with Dylan Carlson in center after both Bader and McElroy were injured.

The Cardinals sent Jose Adolis Garcia to Memphis to make room for Bader on the 25 man roster.

Jo Adell to 10 Day IL with strained hamstring

Jo Adell was placed on the 10 Day IL following Tuesday's game against the Indians. Adell was injured in pre-game warmups and sit out the game. After more testing, it was determined that the right fielder had a strained hamstring and a trip to the IL was necessary.

Jose Adolis Garcia who was going to be sent to Memphis will now stay on the active roster and take Jo Adell's spot.

              Cardinals DFA Kike Hernandez

The Cardinals have designated utilityman Kike Hernandez for assignment.

The Cardinals signed the 32 year old to a one year $3M deal in the offseason in hopes of deploying him all over the diamond to give guys off days and to also serve as a primary pinch hitter off the bench, especially against left-handed pitching.

But things just haven't worked out for Hernandez who is struggling at the plate and is finding his defensive skills are on the decline and he's being passed over for Edmundo Sosa who is similar in makeup, except playing the outfield, but he can play all 4 infield positions.

The Cardinals are expected to trade Hernandez as there is a good market for him. The question will be what do the Cardinals want in return, but its expected they are looking at relief pitching.

Cardinals have not yet announced a corresponding move to fill the vacant 25 man roster spot, but its expected to be Tommy Edman.

Cardinals trade Kike Hernandez to Nationals

The Cardinals and Nationals have agreed on a trade that will send utilityman Kike Hernandez to the Nationals for 2 pitching prospects.

Hernandez was DFA'd by the Cardinals a few days ago while they explored trade possibilities.

The Cardinals will receive 20 year old RHP Andry Lara and 26 year old RHP Tyler Dyson.

Lara has a higher ceiling than Dyson, but Lara has only been as high as the Single A level. Dyson has actually pitched 17 1/3 innings in the majors over the course of 3 starts with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. He is 1-1 in those 3 starts.

Hernandez will add veteran depth to a Nationals lineup that could possibly use some veteran leadership as they are extremely young.

The biggest asset in this trade for the Cardinals is they rid $2.5M off their books that they can possibly use at the upcoming trade deadline should they still be contenders.

Tommy Edman was indeed recalled to take the vacant roster spot voided by Hernandez.

Cardinals remove Rosenthal from closer role

Mike Matheny has made the decision to remove Trevor Rosenthal from the closer role and replace him with Roberto Osuna.

Rosenthal who blew his 5th save in 13 chances last night against the Cubs, took his 3rd loss on the year and saw his ERA balloon to nearly 8. He has given up 7 homeruns in just 11 innings of work, including Addison Russell's game tying homerun in the bottom of the 9th.

Roberto Osuna will take over who has 4 saves in 5 chances this year, his lone blown save was moreso to poor defense than him blowing up. The Cardinals have also used Zack Burdi and Jordan Hicks to save games this season due to Rosenthal's ineffectiveness.

There was no indication if this was a permanent change or if just a chance to give Rosenthal the ball in lower pressure situations to see if he can snap out of his funk.

Cardinals finish month of May with 17-9 record

The Cardinals closed out the month of May with a 17-9 record for the month and are now 29-31 on the season, 9 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central.

The month got off to a hot start as the Cardinals won 12 of their first 14 games which included an 8 game winning streak. But the month cooled off as the Cardinals lost 7 of the final 12 including 3 of 4 to the Cubs who now lead the division.

Pitching is the primary concern for the Cardinals thus far as Funkhouser isn't as dominant as he was last year and Dakota Hudson and Drew Harrington are struggling at the back end. The bullpen continues to struggle as they are struggling to close out games or keep games tied. Trevor Rosenthal's woes became too much for Matheny to handle anymore, and he was removed from his closer role and replaced with Roberto Osuna.

Offensively the Cardinals are still waiting for Ozzie Albies to get his bat going and are still struggling to find a suitable replacement for Juan Fabregas as the everyday left fielder. Oscar Mercado, Jose Adolis Garcia, and Dylan Carlson have all had their chances to fulfill that void, but none of the three have been consistent enough to maintain the job.

As we head into June, the Cardinals front office is diligently scoping out the trade market to see what they may be able to do to improve the pitching and fill the void in left field. The Cardinals certainly have the prospects to pull off a big trade, but whether they do or not remains to be seen.

                    NL Central Standings

                    Cubs 37-21
                    Reds 36-22 (1 GB)
                    Brewers 34-24 (3 GB)
                    Pirates 31-28 (6.5 GB)
                    Cardinals 29-31 (9 GB)

                    June Schedule

                    3 vs NYM
                    3 vs CHC
                    2 @ OAK
                    3 @ COL
                    3 @ ARZ
                    4 vs PIT

I haven’t posted in awhile because.... life. But now getting back into my 2020 Dodgers season. Trying to plan my teams future and have a quick question. About what age is everyone seeing players retire? I have a few areas I’m thinking about upgrading via trade, mainly a backup middle infielder because Kike Hernandez is not getting done. But like the real life Dodgers I’m hesitant to trade away any of my Minor league studs everyone wants in the event I lose Kershaw or Turner soon.

                        MLB Draft Day:

The 2020 Dodgers sit atop the NL West with an 8.5 game lead over the Rockies and a 43-18 record. Heading into the draft the Dodgers have a notable lack of quality depth in all areas of pitching within the minor league clubs. The front office made it known its sole goal in the draft would be to flood young pitchers into the system. They achieved this by selecting 5 pitchers, 2 starters and 3 relievers, with their 6 selections.

                        2020 Draft:
                        Position/Player/Overall/Potential

                        SP/James Casado/65/87
                        RP/Pedro Villanueva/71/78
                        RP/Randy Coles/70/74
                        SP/Trevor Franco/70/89
                        RP/Houston Driver/52/77
                        SS/Geronimo Reyes/59/88

Disclaimer: I’m terrible at scouting and drafting so I just draft based off of Potential.

Carson Kelly to the 10 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed catcher Carson Kelly on the 10 Day IL due to a strained hamstring he suffered in Wednesday nights game against the Mets. He pulled up lame running out a double play ball in the 7th inning.

Kelly is hitting .290 on the year with a homerun and 14 RBI's. This is his second stint on the IL in about a month's time.

Top organizational prospect (top 5 in baseball) Devon Snow was recalled from Memphis to take Kelly's spot. Snow will actually start Thursday afternoon's series finale with the Mets since Knizner had to catch an extra inning game that went to the 14th inning.

                              4 June 2020:

Dodgers (44-18) close out a 3 game series in Miami taking 2 out of 3 games. Colton Stern (7) and Clayton Kershaw (5) earned wins in their outings.

Next up for the Dodgers is an 8 game homestand hosting the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Cubs.

Tony Gonsolin to the 60 Day IL.

Tulsa SP Tony Gonsolin was sent to the 60 Day IL making him the 4th starting pitcher on that list joining Brock Stuart (OKC), Dylan Baker (OKC) and Dennis Santana (Tulsa). Gonsolin suffered a Torn Calf during his 8 inning outing against Arkansas while earning his 4th win. Gonsolin holds a 4-2 record with a 1.97 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

Cardinals take 2 of 3 from Mets

The Cardinals took the series against the Mets winning 2 of the 3 games. The Cardinals went for the sweep in the Thursday afternoon get away game, but were unable to pull it off losing 5-3.

The Cardinals got decent pitching and the bullpen held their own for the first series in about 2 weeks, which was needed because the offense struggled in this series, primarily Oscar Mercado and Jose Adolis Garcia in the middle of the lineup. But the pitching was strong and the offense did enough to win 2 of 3.

The Cardinals will stay home this weekend to host the Cubs for 3 games.

Cardinals activate Jo Adell from IL

The Cardinals have activated RF Jo Adell from the 10 Day IL for the upcoming Cubs series. Adell will hopefully add a spark to the middle of the lineup with the return of his bat.

Oscar Mercado was placed on Optional Assignment waivers to make room for Adell on the active roster.
