Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

    End of April - 2020

30 games down and things are going much like it has the last couple of seasons. We sit at 11-19. Last in the Central and 2.5 games better than the Orioles for the worst record in the league. We have won 3 of our 7 series. Taking 2 of 3 from Cleveland and Toronto as well as a 3 game sweep of Toronto 1 week later.

The offense has been decent overall but had a terrible start to the year. We are hitting .251/.330/.390 (15th, 10th, 19th) we have 118 Runs (20th), 48 Doubles (15th), 10 Triples (1st) and 25 Home Runs (28th). Our 28 Stolen bases is 3rd best in the league but we have been caught 14 times (20th) and have a 66% Success Rate (11th). We are 9th in Walks with 113 and have struckout 217 times (2nd).

Ryan O'Hearn had a decent season in 2019 hitting .281 with 20 HR. He is currently on pace to hit pretty close to the same number of Home Runs but his overall numbers are much better hitting .352/.443/.533. His Walks are up slightly and he is striking out about 4% less. Jorge Bonifacio has been our 2nd best hitter. 324/.410/.544 with 3 homers. Most surprising so far has been Erick Mejia. Not a ton of ABs but he is hitting .354/.404/.417 in 48 AB. On the other end we have Nicky Lopez with a .176/.250/.222 line. Cheslor Cuthbert has been even worse at .130/.245/.174 and Bubba Starling is hitting .202/.287/.315.

Jorge Soler has been the only position player with a significant injury so far. Suffered a broken shin on April 24th. Expected to be out till mid to late June. We called up Samir Dunez to fill his spot. In 73 AB down in AAA he was hitting .342/.385/.616 with 6 HR.

The pitching has been a major let down through the first month of the season. We are 24th in ERA at 4.17. No complete games. 2 shutouts, Last in saves, and our 157 Strikeouts is last in the majors. We have 51 less than the White Sox in 29th which is the same as the difference between them and the Diamondbacks in 14th.

Brad Keller has been everything we could have hoped so far. 2.13 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. His FIP doesnt quite agree that he has been so good sitting at 4.29. Danny Duffy on the other hand has a 2.86 FIP in 34.2 IP. His ERA is at 3.89 with a 1.27 WHIP. Jorge Lopez has been the worst starter by far. 6.40 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 32.1 IP. The bullpen has had some pretty mixed results led by Scott Barlow with a 1.89 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Just behing him is Tim Hill with a 2.25 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. Kevin McCarthy with a 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP and Josh Staumont with a 3.24 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Ian Kennedy and Jake Newberry both have an ERA over 6 and Kyle Zimmer had an ERA of 9 before we sent him down. Scott Barlow came up on April 11th after we had a 13 inning game with a rain daily that caused us to use our entire pen.

Looking ahead to the future we are less than 1 month away from the 2020 draft in which we own the first pick for the second time in franchise history. The last time we had the pleasure of picking first was back in 2006. We selected Luke Hochevar which didn't turn out so well as he was a complete letdown as a starter before becoming a solid reliever over his last few years.

The first pick this year seems to come down to 2 players. 19 year old Starting Pitcher Alex Ito out of Japan and 21-year-old Catcher Kurt Bowles out of Ohio. Ito throws a 4 Seam in the low to mid 90s with a Slider, Change and a Curve. Can regularly go 7+ innings, Excels at limit walks while being above to well above AVG in every other area with elite movement on his pitches. Bowles meanwhile looks to be a .300 hitter with some pop in his bat as well as above AVG fielding and an elite arm behind the plate. Not sure yet which one we are going to go with. And still looking for some other options. But both would be ready pretty quickly and look to be pretty safe bets.

Another 30 games left before the draft starts. 19 of them will be on the road with 18 against teams at or above .500 and another 4 against the A's who are 1 game under .500. On pace for a 3rd straight 100 loss season. Could be seeing a few call ups soon with starters struggling and Bubba being near useless.

Mozeliak, "Matheny will be the manager in 2023"

After a week or so of turmoil and down right bad blood, John Mozeliak made it be known that Mike Matheny would be the Cardinals manager in 2023.

"I know there is speculation running through the media, our fans, and possibly even our clubhouse, about the future of Mike being the manager of the Cardinals. I'm telling you right here and now, that he will absolutely be the manager for the Cardinals next year and we anticipate that he'll be the manager in 2024 and beyond."

Matheny's contract expires after the 2024 season. This declaration of a foundation comes at a time where there has been disdain amongst the clubhouse and managerial staff as to how the front office handled roster moves and the players involved in those trades. Matheny spoke out last week about how the roster they broke camp with in March/April could have returned to the World Series, but the front office traded away pieces they needed (Carpenter, Tulo, Pham, Cimber, etc...). He mentioned how pieces in return (pointing out Ozzie Albies specifically) didn't fit the roster and caused it to be unbalanced. After those comments were made, many wondered if that would be the opportunity for the front office to continue this trend of shaking things up for reasons many didn't, and still don't, understand.

John Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt came out a week prior to Matheny's comments telling the fanbase that the front office is the reason for the shape the Cardinals are in this season, and they unsurprisingly, didn't find anyone who disagreed.

The calendar is about to flip to September and the season is about to come to close and unless something drastic happens, the Cardinals are going to miss the playoffs for the first time in 6 years.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

The Dodgers (92-46) wrap up August by going 19-9 and are holding onto the best record in baseball by 2 games (Angels). 1 game left in a 6 game home stand which has seen the Dodgers get swept 2 games to none by the A’s (64-72) and are currently up 2 games to 1 with 1 game left against the D-Backs (67-68). The Dodgers maintain an 11 game lead over the Rockies (80-57) in the West.

Bellinger has been on a hot streak and leads the NL HR race with 40.

Does anyone have advice for how to navigate contract expectations in Franchise? It seems like player's contract expectation will move throughout the season, so I sign him to the contract he wants at the beginning of the year and then by the end of the season he's upset. This is really annoying, is this how they intended for the morale to work? Is there a general guideline of what a good contract is?

If I promote a guy from AAA to the 40 man in the offseason, the game says he wants like $510k or so for the year. But by end of the season his expectation is that he should be making $800k-$1mil. Now I lose 10 points to morale for that player because he doesn't like the contract he just signed. Seems like a bad design choice.

As I have also said, he is my Ryne Sandberg clone because Ryno is my all-time favorite dude and I really wanted a power hitting 2B with speed. Anyways last night here was his performance:

            1st AB: RBI double
2nd AB: Fly out to Left
            3rd AB: 3-run HR

            5th AB: Grand Slam

            4 for 5 with 3 Hrs and 11 Rbis

This brings his season totals up to .272 ave, 45 Hrs, 128 Rbis and 41 steals if you need it

I posted this performance the other day and I also wanted to share his year by year/back of baseball card stats.

            MORGAN DURAN

            2016 .319 ave 18 hrs 55 rbis 18 steals (age 19)* about 110 games

            2017 .276 ave 33 hrs 110 rbis 23 steals (age 20)

            2018 .320 ave 25 hrs 90 rbis 24 steals (age 21)

            2021 .310 ave 34 hrs 114 rbis 51 steals (age 24)

            2022 .291 ave 28 hrs 108 rbis 36 steals (age 25)

            2023 .307 ave 36 hrs 104 rbis 48 steals (age 26)

            2024 .298 ave 31 hrs 123 rbis 41 steals (age 27)

            2025 .276 ave 45 hrs 129 rbis 42 steals (age 28)* Still 20 games remaining

This guy has been an absolute stud and with 20 games to go is just crushing the ball.....I honestly think 50/50 as ridiculous as that sounds could be attainable. In my lineup hes my 3 hole hitter (I bat KB 2nd and Harper 4th)

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Alright then, 3rd time is the charm. Having lost my Rays save to computer roster stupidity, my second save with the Tigers to the pitcher DH bug, now I'm finally ready to start my (hopefully) last franchise of the year. After having far longer than I'd like to plan who to go with, I've settled upon the least successful franchise in the history of major league baseball, the Seattle Mariners.

What's not to love about a team who has never been to the world series and is possibly heading into one of it's worst seasons in the franchises 43 year history?

Looking around, lets be honest, it's going to be a rebuilding year. All the valuable assets have been plundered, it's going to be more about getting rid of contracts instead of acquiring valuable talent, unless we are willing to part with Mitch Haniger (which we have no plans to do). The farm system is sparse, but with some shining lights, particularly Justus Sheffield and Jarrod Kelenic, who figure to be the face of the rebuild.

Generally though, it's going to be a rough year. If we can get the veterans playing well enough to shift their contracts then that would be a big plus. If some of the younger players like Narvaez, Mallex, Healy and Santana can increase their value and maybe bring us a quality prospect or two, then the season will be considered a success.

First things first though, re-sign Ichiro and let him have a proper farewell season, as why not when we have nothing to play for?

Contracts are a cat-and-mouse game and SDS captures this brilliantly. You can overpay everyone and keep morale up but you can't afford that with budgets. You can do a long-term extension with a young player, you run the risk of them being upset with a lower-value contract down the road (like the WhiteSox might face with Eloy or the Braves with Albies). On the other hand, you can do year-by-year boosts, but if they blow up, you might wind-up paying more once all is said-and-done. You can low-ball the youngins to save money and hope other aspects of his morale are high enough to keep him from taking 'a hit'.

My only advice, have a plan...identify your key guys you need to really 'take care of' and those you don't. If you're just willy-nilly offering extensions with no forethought....you're going to be screwed. There is no right-or-wrong way to do this, it is up to YOU as the virtual GM to make these vital decisions for the good of your franchise.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Coming down to the last week of the season, my Cardinals are finally officially eliminated. All in all it wasn’t a bad season at all, but much of the talent and strong players are are yet to be spread out in this inaugural season, so certain teams have clearly separated themselves. But I believe this will make for an exciting playoffs that I intend to spectate happily!

The Cardinals record is presently at 82-74, very respectable, but have a pretty clear idea what to address in the off season to hopefully put them where they need to be in this league.

Next I will post the playoff races and where they stand presently, plus I’ll do a league leaders post for the most relevant and interesting that are coming down to the wire!

I’m trying to finish playing out my last 6 games without simming, but now that I’m officially eliminated my patience is weening fast lol 😳

COULD 2019 BE DIFFERENT FOR THE REDS?

So again, I am getting a late start to my fantasy franchise. I was holding off, hoping SDS would fix the missing pitcher's hitting stats for carryovers so I could bring over my franchised started in 2017, but 12 patches later and still not corrected. So I came up with a way using a little roster manipulation to use a 2019 OSFM roster in 2019 and still have my favorite Reds and some really wanted rookies.

Admittedly, I had to make a use of roster moves and tried to keep it fair, obviously no real superstars were stolen, except Ohtani who I actually acquired in trade in before the 2018 season started in MLBTS 18, but mostly previous Reds player, Ohio born players or player I had on my 2017 Fantasy Franchise. So without further ado...

Adam Dunn contacted THE NEW REDS OWNERSHIP after acquiring the team from former owner Bob Castellini. . Dunn expressed interest in coming out off retirement but as a part-time player. Considered a questionable move by many, but new ownership quickly opened their arms to one of their a favorite players. He will trade playing time with 1B Derek Dietrich throughout the season.

September Call Ups for the 2019 Dodgers (94-48) came and went without any surprises. RP Kenta Maeda, 3B Donovan Solano, SS Gregory Ozuna, OF Andrew Toles were all called up. All of these players have spent some part of the 2019 season with the big league club so they are familiar faces around the clubhouse. The Dodgers are hoping to give some of the every day players some rest as they seem to be cruising to the playoffs and would like to limit any potential for injury.

The front office would have ideally brought up 1B to spell Muncy but the the top 2 prospects, Danny Dopp and Matt Beaty, have been living on the IL all season and after them there isn’t much promise in the lower levels of the system.

The idea of bringing up a 3rd catcher was also tossed around as Barnes (.255, 11 HR, 35 RBI) and Suzuki (.243, 2 HR, 10) are both playing streaky baseball and have not been reliable at the plate when needed. But in the end the idea was nixed due to GM greed and wanting to maintain control over players long term and not let them accumulate service time. It’s well known that the Dodgers are deep at catcher in their system with 3 players rated mid 70’s and 2 with A potential (Fullerton, Ruiz, and Smith).

The Cubs 2025 season is winding down and I currently sit with an 8 game lead over Cincy. I’m 87-56 and haven’t lost a game in September. I just remember how my 2024 squad limpped to finish the year. That is not the case this season and barring a catosphopic collapse this will be my 11th straight central crown and keep up my hopes to eclipse the 90s Braves 14 straight division titles.

I was sitting at 41-37 record at one point this year.....so I’m currently on a 46-19 run. I’ll be perfectly honest, I didn’t know if this team had it in it. The offense has just been relentless through to the tune of a .278 ave, 191 Hrs, 771 runs scored and 287 streals. Now I know those steals will never happen and honestly I don’t know if anyone has approached this number(I’ll have to look it up) but I love stealing and I chase speed when scouting. This number is a result of years of chasing speed (I have 6 guys that get regular play time that have a speed over 85 and 3 of those guys have speeds over 90). Im just a running fool😂

                              2019 Texas Rangers Fantasy Franchise

July 30: More inconsistent, sloppy play by our club leads to a 4-6 road trip. We’re still in 1st place(66-41), but whereas a month ago it looked like we were going to run away with it, we are now clinging to it as the 2nd and 3rd best records in the AL belong to LAA(64-45/3.0 GB) and OAK(63-45/3.5 GB). Our #1 scoring offense was shutout twice on the trip. Our bullpen got massacred. Even Jeffress who had saved his last 20 tries blew a save in a disastrous 7 run 8th inning where my best bullpen arms collapsed.

The hottest current hitters in my lineup are Trout and Carpenter. Trout has been consistently good all year. I said his power numbers were lower than I expected, but he’s hit some as of late and is now up to 30(5th AL)on the year to go with a .335 AVG(3rd), 92 RBI(T-1st) and 93 runs(2nd). Carpenter leads MLB with 41 HR and 92 RBI(T-1st).

Darvish and Morton have been pitching the best as of late, while the rest of the rotation and bullpen seem to all have rising ERAs. There was a point this year where we were at the top of the league in team ERA and now we sit in the middle of the pack(14th) and dropping. We’ll need more people to step up for our staff if we want to make a deep playoff run. We can’t rely on the homerun to save us every time.

With just 2 game remaining in July we are 10-13 on the month. This is unacceptable and I expect us to turn it around in August. If there is an Ace available we might make a splash in the next 48 hours to try and solidify the staff....

Hopefully wrapping the regular season up this weekend. I've got 13 games left in the season and I'm officially eliminated from postseason contention. However, I'm still fighting for pride and because I've got series with the Cubs still to come.

Stream is going live right now. Facing off against Scherzer and the Nats. I may hop into some Diamond Dynasty a little later on. We'll see.
