Should have never turned on the game. Just never seemed to settle into a good mental groove in this one...

2024 White Sox Franchise - End of July

We only lost 3 times in July putting us at 83-24 on the season.

Sox offense took off in July. We are hitting .278 as a team going from the 14th ranked offense in average up to 2nd this last month. We have also jumped to 4th in runs scored with 526 and tied for 6th in homers with 138.

Pitching still leads all of baseball with a 2.11 ERA, 248 runs allowed and 57 homers allowed, despite being 29th in strikeouts with 817.

Sox All-Stars were SP Andre Simons, SP Michael Kopech, SP Kevin DiBiase and CP Patrick McKenzie.

      Team Leaders:

      Avg. - Charlie Tilson .307
      H - Charlie Tilson 124
HR - Hayden McClendon and Yoenis Cespedes 19
      RBI - Eloy Jimenez 57

      ERA - Andre Simons 1.65
      K's - Michael Kopech 160

        Cardinals take series from Pirates

The Cardinals took 2 of 3 games from the Pirates to start the week and move to within 4 games of the Pirates in the Central division. The Cardinals were going for the sweep but couldn't beat Jose Fernandez in the series finale.

Ozzie Albies continued his hot bat since the break as he went 5 for 11 in the series with a homerun and 7 RBI's. He also had 2 doubles. Brendan McKay hit 3 homeruns in the series and drove in 9 runs. He is now 4th in the National League in homeruns with 23.

A concern for the Cardinals is Harrison Bader and his plummeting OPS. Bader's average is down in the .240's and his OPS is barely now above .300 which is unacceptable for his role on this club as the lead off hitter.

The Cardinals go home for a 4 game series with the Brewers before they hit the road again and visit Wrigley Field to take on their arch rival Cubs in a 3 game series.

Cardinals place Juan Fabregas on 10 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed LF Juan Fabregas on the 10 Day IL due to a Lat Muscle Strain. Fabregas injured himself in warmups prior to the series opener against the Brewers. This is the second time this year that Fabregas has been put on the IL due to a lat muscle strain.

The Cardinals have not made a corresponding move. Jose Adolis Garcia is expected to start in left field in Fabregas' absence.

          Cardinals activate Michael Wacha

The Cardinals have activated SP Michael Wacha from the IL. Wacha has missed two months due to a shoulder injury. The 31 year old will be back in the rotation and is expected to pitch Friday's game against the Brewers.

The Cardinals optioned LHP Corey Littrell to Memphis to make room on the active roster.

Cardinals claim Jabari Blash off waivers from Boston

The Cardinals have claimed OF Jabari Blash off waivers from the Red Sox, after trading the 31 year old there earlier this season to acquire RP Robby Scott. Blash was on outright assignment waivers when the Cardinals placed a claim on him.

Blash was expected to report to Memphis, but due to Fabregas' injury, Blash will report to St.Louis.

            Seattle Mariners Franchise: 2020
            2020 Mariners Draft Review
            Draft Rating: B-
Overall the Mariners 2020 draft class have at least 3 players who could could end up with long major league careers. At the very least this class will show the rest of the league how serious Seattle is in having one of the best farm systems around.

            Rnd 1:
Damien Matson, C (18 yrs/Wisconsin) The only catcher taken in the first round Mariners fans could see their first round pick on the MLB roster sooner than later. The Mariners were impressed by his ability to coral pitches in the dirt and catch speedsters trying to steal second.

            Rnd 2:
Armando Morales, SP (20 yrs/Dominican Republic) Morales doesn't excel in any particular area but the hard throwing lefty will have time develop into a solid MLB worthy starter in the Mariners farm system as the team has enough depth ahead of him.

            Rnd 3:
Alejandro Ruiz, RP (21 yrs/California) The Mariners third pick most likely will spend the majority of his career in the minors. While he has the stamina to become a solid long relief guy he has a tendency to walk batters and give up home runs.

            Rnd 4:
Nate Silk, CP (19 yrs/Netherlands) No one knows what the future holds but Silk has the potential to be an All-Star at the major league level. The left handed closer knows how to put away a game and has Mariners fans dreaming of the possibilities of pairing him with Felipe Armas as righty/lefty closing specialists.

            Rnd 5:
Chris Leonard, 3B (18 yrs/California) Leonard lacks the throwing ability to be a MLB starter. The San Diego native is league bench player at best but in reality isn't expected to progress past the minor league level.

            Rnd 6:
Joe Bracken, LF (19 yrs/North Carolina) There's a reason Bracken was selected last. If he manages to find his way on to any team in the Mariners farm system he could be considered a long term project at best.

C Martin Maldonado 1 year 5.2M - Replaces Romine At backup C. Can’t hit much but provides elite defense behind the plate.
Resigned Edwin Encarnacion 1 year 8M
Signed SP Jose Urena - A good depth option, coming off a 3.29 ERA and 1.19 WHIP year in Miami. Comes with a year of ARB control.
Signed SP Tyler Anderson - another good depth option, coming off a 2.99 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 147 IP for Colorado. Comes with a year of ARB control.
Leury Garcia 720K 1 year - depth switch hitting utility player.
Resigned OF Ben Revere 1 year 4M

Added a few vets on the cheap to bring into camp late in the offseason.
              RF/DH Nelson Cruz
              OF Nick Markakis
              OF Brett Gardner
              2B Ben Zobrist.
Markakis is very unlikely to make the team. Cruz could because of his still great bat but it would be a bit hard to find room for him if we run a 3 man bench as he’s near useless in the field. Small chance Gardner could. Zobrist is the most interesting of the bunch. Plays 2B, SS, and the OF. Ok defender. Switch hitter, still has good contact, vision, and discipline. Has just enough pop vs right handed pitching to maybe slip one over the wall at Yankee Stadium once in a while. A real chance at making the team.

We were able to acquire Noah Syndergaard from the Mets for a large haul.
              Mets Get:
              SP Domingo German (replaces Syndergaard)
              Prospect SP Sean Hjelle
Prospect SP Tyler Beede (very close to if not MLB ready coming off strong AAA season).
Prospect OF Jhon Diaz (young and raw but good potential)
              Prospect 2B Tyler Wade
1B Luke Voit (yes they have Alonso but NL DH is on so they can use both.)
RP Tommy Kahnle (MLB Bullpen Upgrade)

Think it’s fair. He’s coming off a poor season, they get a good cheap controllable instant replacement in German, multiple good prospects in Beede, Hjelle, and Diaz. 2 quality MLB level players to boost the MLB roster in Voit (cheap and controllable) and Kahnle.

Not much to watch for in ST, on a team like this the roster is mostly set.
Ottavino is still here here now. Have a deal for him with the Giants in place, strongly considering it. It would be a straight up 1 for 1 swap of Ottavino for Mark Melancon. Both are on expiring contracts. Giants are set up to be a contender again but will have very little mid season financial wiggle room after adding guys like Cole, Donaldson, Tanaka, and paying Will Smith. They are both similar quality pitchers, Ottavino is a year younger at age 34 and is only making 9M compared to Melancon’s 15.5M which we can afford to take on.

Most importantly, Melancon would bring the same qualities that are now much more valued then before under new pitching coach Daisuke Stevens. Good control, and is great at limiting walks and HR’s.

We are also considering not even carrying a #5 starter which would likely be Jordan Montgomery and instead carrying Holder on the Opening Day roster which equal 9 RP’s. The plan would be to use a ‘Bullpen Day/Opener’ instead. Might do a test run late in ST. Plan would also be to use it in between MadBum and Thor’s starts to offer as much protection the day before and after as possible from the bullpen having to put in major work back to back games. Would make things interesting for sure.

Well now that the offseason is over this should be it for the extremely long posts.
Probably won’t play through much of ST. Not very fun in the Show, especially when your team is really good so there’s not many battles for roster spots.

                2020 Astros Trade Deadline Update

Well, it was certainly an interesting Trade Deadline for me. We were forced to make some moves because of injuries and Morale woes.

First, Anthony Rizzo went down with a fractured wrist. He's out for up to 2 months. We are currently 63-49... which is tied for the AL West lead with the A's. Yuli Gurriel is STRUGGLING this season, so I had to make a move for a 1st baseman. I ended up getting Yonder Alonso from the White Sox for SP Cionel Perez. Alonso is batting .293 on the year, compared to Yuli's .222 average, it was a move I desperately needed.

I had two unhappy guys on my roster. Jake Marisnick was very upset with his lack of playing time, so I felt the need to ship him out. The Giants are currently in a playoff race with no center fielder. I needed a backup catcher better than Rene Rivera. I traded Marisnick to them for SP Jamie Callahan and C Aramis Garcia. Win-win trade, in my eyes.

One last one. The Braves sent me an offer that I couldn't refuse. It was Lance McCullers Jr. for Mike Foltynewicz and RP Max Fried. McCullers was performing below his ability for me because he was unhappy. Foltynewicz hasn't been much better, but to get Fried with him was a selling point. Hopefully we can get Fried on the right track because he has struggled big time the past two seasons.

Around the league it has been very eventful. The Nationals got Rhys Hoskins for SS Luis Garcia and SP Mason Denaburg. The Red Sox acquired Daniel Robertson for SP Jay Groome and LF Nick Decker. They also got Jorge Soler for SS Ryan Vento. The Indians got Tommy Pham for LF Oscar Gonzalez and SP Triston McKenzie.

The big one, however, came for the Dodgers for the second year in a row. They got Lorenzo Cain from the Brewers for Joc Pederson, AJ Pollock, and Austin Barnes. Big move there.

Here is an interesting little tidbit of information... Josh James (my long relief man) leads the AL in wins with 15 despite never starting a game. He has a 15-7 record with a 5.15 ERA and 127.2 IP (third highest on the team) and again HE HASN'T STATTED A GAME. How does that happen?

                  Miami Marlins Franchise:

End of 2021 season and Offseason

We conclude the 2021 season with a record of 64-98. It was not quite the 10 game improvement we were hoping for but a 6 win improvement is ok. It feels like we lost a lot of 1 run games so our record could have easily been better than it was. Our main goal last offseason was to improve our pitching and we did that this year having a team ERA of 4.76 coming down from 5.12 last year. Still not great or even good but we will take the improvement.

                  Standouts-
                  C Jorge Alfaro .284 AVG, 28 HR, 84 RBI, .841 OPS, 3.6 WAR
DH Jesus Sanchez .278 AVG, 37 HR, 92 RBI, .858 OPS, 3.0 WAR
                  C Austin Barnes 57 games, .315 AVG, 3 HR, 21 RBI, .855 OPS, 2.3 WAR
                  1B Lewin Diaz 66 games, .281 AVG, 10 HR, 34 RBI, .819 OPS, 1.0 WAR

Alfaro has easily been our most constant player over the last 3 seasons. He has hit over .275 each year and has put up good power number. Jesus Sanchez followed his good rookie year with an even better season this year. His average went from .234 last year to .278 this year. He also put up 8 more home runs. Austin Barnes who was signed as our backup catcher last offseason, did his job perfectly. He had just 1 error in those 57 games and put up great offensive numbers. Lewin Diaz who split time with AJ Reed at 1st had a strong year and will probably get more at-bats next year because of that.

*Notice there is no pitcher in the standouts section because quite simply they all stood out for the wrong reasons lol.

The New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals faced off in the 2021 World Series. The Yankees lost in the World Series the last two years but this time, they came through and won. The series went 7 games and ended when Giancarlo Stanton hit a walk-off 3 run HR in inning 11 of game 7 at Yankee Stadium to win their 28th title.

                  Offseason

The 2021 offseason was a quick and boring one for us. We basically did nothing except sign all our guys that needed to be signed. You could say we are betting on ourselves by not making any signings or trades after a 64 win season. This may come back to bite us but our guys will only get better going into next season and the guys that had a bad year last year will hopefully be better.

Our goal for the 2022 season is 75 wins. Under 68 wins is a fail and anything over 80 wins is a huge success.

                    Miami Marlins Franchise:

                    2022 Mid-Season Update

We sit 52-53 at the trade deadline. Our goal for this season was 75 wins total so we need to go at least 23-34 the rest of way to reach that. Although we are close to .500 so is everyone else in our division meaning we are in 4th in the NL East. Our starting pitching his been poor outside of Pablo Lopez but our bullpen has actually been pretty good. Our hitting has been our strength as a lot of guys are having breakout years.

We are in an awkward spot in regards to the trade deadline. I don’t feel like we are ready to contend this year and considering how other teams in our division are doing, I don’t think we have a chance of making the playoffs this year. That being said I don’t necessarily want to be sellers either, although we have a couple guys on expiring deals we could move.

One idea I have is trading our closer Drew Steckenrider. He is coming off a year where he had 46 saves for us, but this year he had had his ups and downs, he has 30 saves but also 7 blown saves. He is under control for another year so he is a pretty valuable trade piece if we decide to move him. But at the same time, he could be very valuable to us in our attempt to make the postseason again. I think what we’ll do is look to move him if we can get a package similar to the Roberto Osuna and Ken Giles trade in 2018 with the blue jays and astros. If we could move Steckenrider and get back a good, but struggling reliever that is under control for next season and just hope he turns it around for next season, plus a prospect, I think we would make that trade.

I should also mention that we have a few guys we could use as our closer for the remainder of this year if we move Steckenrider. Ryne Stanek, Pedro Baez, Julian Fernandez and we have 20 year old 77 ovr closer with B potential at AAA who is doing well could all be used as our new closer.

I don’t feel comfortable being buyers at this deadline, but I think we will be this time next year. Our pitching this year is just really shaky and I don’t think it’s enough to get us to the postseason. If we improve that in the offseason we will be in really good shape going into the 2023 season.

So our plan is to look to move Steckenrider but if we can’t find a trade then we will keep him, but I think we will find a package we like.

                      2020 Astros Postseason Update

The regular season has come to a close and my Astros have yet again won the AL West! This year, it wasn't easy as we finished 93-69, only 2 games ahead of the A's (91-71 record).

The postseason started with the Cardinals defeating the Mets in the NL Wild Card game. The Athletics defeated the White Sox in the AL Wild Card game.

Now, in the NL, we have two great matchups. The Nationals (91-72) take on the Cubs (104-58), and the Dodgers (107-55) take on the Cardinals (86-77).

In the AL, the Indians (114-48... good lord...) take on the Athletics. We get the honor of taking on the Yankees (99-63).

The pitching matchups in this series will look like this:

Game 1: Zack Greinke (15-9, 3.32 ERA) vs. Luis Severino (17-8, 2.40 ERA)
Game 2: Mike Foltynewicz (11-13, 3.26 ERA) vs. Chad Green (3-6, 3.42 ERA)
Game 3: Brad Peacock (10-7, 3.54 ERA) vs. Jordan Montgomery (18-7, 3.34 ERA)
Game 4: Justin Verlander (8-14, 4.72 ERA) vs. Julio Teheran (7-8, 3.04 ERA)

Verlander has been awful this year, so I had to go with the other three before him. If we can win Game 1, though, I feel very confident in our ability to win the series.

                      Here is our lineup:

                      1 - RF Josh Reddick (.292 avg, 16 HR, 76 RBI)
                      2 - DH Michael Brantley (.289 avg, 27 HR, 72 RBI)
                      3 - 2B Jose Altuve (.288 avg, 18 HR, 74 RBI)
                      4 - SS Carlos Correa (.288 avg, 31 HR, 104 RBI)
                      5 - 3B Alex Bregman (.287 avg, 30 HR, 90 RBI)
                      6 - 1B Anthony Rizzo ( .248 avg, 22 HR, 57 RBI)
                      7 - LF Kyle Tucker (.255 avg, 13 HR, 63 RBI)
                      8 - C Max Stassi (.251 avg, 11 HR, 51 RBI)
                      9 - CF George Springer (.254 avg, 20 HR, 78 RBI)

I'm excited to get started in what should be a great series.

                        Seattle Mariners Franchise: 2020
5 games from history: Mariners win streak snapped!

June 5 - The 103 year old record of New York Giants 26 straight wins will last a little bit longer. After almost a month the Mariners run for the record books came to an end topping out at 22 straight wins. Seattle went down 4-2 against the Angels. Prior to Friday nights defeat the M's last loss came against the Rangers on May 10. Seattle is now tied with the 2017 Cleveland Indians for most consecutive wins.

The streak showed signs of trouble in the final two games of the previous series with the Blue Jays. The second game in the series against the Jays earlier in the week saw the Mariners down 6-1 in the 7th with the M's battling back for a final score of 8-6, the next night they scratched out a 2-1 win.

In a post game interview Manager Scott Servais had the following to say "I know everyone from the fans to players and myself included are a little disappointed at not breaking the record but the good news is we hold an 11.5 game lead in the west. We are in a really good position. The ultimate goal is a winning it all and hopefully we can carry that momentum forward."

Servais later went on to say "As much as I think the guys were excited about the record I think an added layer of pressure has been lifted. When you get that close to a historic achievement you can become a little passive and this might lead to errors in judgment Is it disappointing? Of course but now the focus is just about the day to day business of going out there and taking it one game at a time and not worrying about beating the record but the ultimate goal a world series win."

It's a long season ahead and despite falling short of the record the M's can use this momentum as they head into the Summer months.

Astros Take Game One From the Yankees

This type of game is one where I am very thankful for pulling the trigger on the Zack Greinke deal in the offseason. When I did it, I was expecting him to be my second guy, the one that follows up Verlander to take control of a series, but with Verlander struggling Greinke had to step up and be my number one guy. He was great for us tonight.

6 innings pitched for Greinke. He only gave up two base runners. He made just one mistake against the best lineup in baseball this year and when he left after the 6th, the Astros had a 2-1 lead.

Bregman started the Astros scoring with a solo home run in the 2nd. Stassi knocked in the 2nd run with a sac fly in the 4th and then Kyle Tucker put the nail in the coffin with a 2-run homer in the 8th inning.

The Yankees couldn't get baserunners. The pitching staff, which included Greinke. Greene, Devenski, and Osuna, was on point tonight. Together they struck out 11 people, including Aaron Judge three times.

Astros take Game One, 4-1. Game Two is in New York again. The matchup will be Mike Foltynewicz versus Chad Green. It should be a great one.

Astros Win Wild Game 2 Over Yankees

I'm not wasting any time right now. We went straight into Game 2 and it was a bit of a crazy one. Reddick started the game off with a home run and Altuve followed it up with one of his own two batters later. In the 2nd inning Stassi hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Astros and I thought we were about to cruise to a victory.

The Yankees weren't going away, though. They slowly clawed their way back and during the 7th inning they finally tied it up 3-3. Momentum was flowing hard to their side, but my hitters weren't going to let it stay that way. In the 8th inning our offense exploded for 4 runs (including a pinch hit homer by Aledmys Diaz that gave us the lead again). That would be the final nail.

                            Astros Win Game 2, 7-3.

Game 3 will be in Houston as Brad Peacock will take the mound against Jordan Montgomery. The Astros will look to close the series out and move on to the ALCS.

I was getting ready to right a much different rant about this game late in this one. I should have scored a ton more runs in this one. I had no less than three major scoring opportunities in this one that I just pissed away. With the win, we remain just a game behind Seattle in second place headed into the series with them.

                                Upcoming series:

                                May 7th - 10th

                                Oakland (24-11) @ Seattle (26-11)

                                Game #1

                                Sean Manaea (3-0, 2.79) Vs. Tanner Roark (4-1, 2.70)

                                Game #2

                                Damiel Mengden (5-1, 2.64) Vs. Steven Ashton (3-2, 3.96)

                                Game #3

                                Jharel Cotton (3-2, 4.58) Vs. Matt Moore (2-2, 4.35)

                                Game #4

                                Drew Smyly (5-2, 1.52) Vs. Felix Hernandez (2-1, 3.11)

This series will go a long way this early in the season to see just if I can contend with the other teams in my division. Here is to a Series win. A series loss or sweep by Seattle could have long-lasting effects that could hamper the teams run at a third consecutive division title.
