Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

I have to say this year has much exceeded my expectations. The game plays buttery smooth and looks amazing, especially on Sharper and HDR settings. Hard to describe but the everything is crisper and the details are sharp. It is largely the same game (in a good way) but you feel like you are playing something completely new.

The sound of the bat is simply spot on. Oh and perfect perfect!!! The players make realistic errors and take realistic routes to the ball. You can really see the difference now in players who have, for example, rocket arms like Baez. In my first game against Cubs CPU, Baez committed two errors though lol.

Stream just can't do this game justice. You have to get your hands on it to really appreciate the improvements. So far so good.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

Only got to play a few quick innings before I left for work this morning.

Game looks a lot like '19, which is to be expected. And I'm not even complaining really, the game looks great.

I was one who experienced some really bad framerate in '19 before they patched it. In the few innings I played of '20, with Balanced as my choice (I'll try Faster later), the game definitely plays a lot smoother than '19 when the ball is in play. I'm still seeing a lot of stutter/slow down in other areas though, such as when the fielders are throwing the ball around after an out, I'm still seeing the ghost/skipping baseball that looks weird. Also, when the ball is NOT in play, for instance a batter stepping out of the box or reacting to a strike 3 call, the game looks kind of weird too with stutter/slow down. I want to choose Faster later and see if this stutter remains.

My only gripe thus far is the intro is terrible compared to previous years, and no its not because its Javy.

Gameplay is simply amazing and once again topples that of its predecessor. The stutter steps in the outfield, the new catcher block animations, the even greater difference between elite, good, average, and poor defenders, the new hitting mechanic, and even pitching feels better than last year. It seems that I can blow fastballs by hitters at a better, more realistic pace especially when I have them off-balance.

Kudos to SDS for yet another solid game on the diamond.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I want to get some time in with Faster mode. I had to go to Faster in '19 just to have a decent frame rate. Even after the patch, which definitely made things better, I still experience some frame rate dips at certain parks in '19. And the worst thing about it is they occur during gameplay, when the ball is in play, it's a huge eye sore.

The good news is that, even though I only played a few innings, on Balanced mode the frame rate was much smoother during gameplay when the ball was in play in '20 compared to '19. I'm going to guess that bodes well for Faster mode too.

So I don't know, gameplay-wise the frame rate seems improved for sure. But aesthetically, when gameplay isn't occuring, the game still seems to stutter/slow down quite a bit. It's a bummer but something I can live with. And the stutter/slow down might not even exist in Faster mode. I'll get a handful of games in tonight to test all of this out.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

I played a few hours last night and the biggest thing that stuck out for me was the bat sounds. It's such a small thing but it's so satisfying when you really square up a pitch.

I played only conquest on all star and I felt the pitch speed was slightly slower? Could be crazy but I was literally playing the previous game earlier in the day. Maybe it's just a change to the timing window shrug...

I like the new perfect perfect a lot but my initial impression was that I got it too often on all star. I was playing 3 inning games and was getting 2-3 a game. I did have huge problems with hitting it pretty much perfect a lot last season and lining out... So it could just that I have good timing on all star. I just worry that people online will tee off.

Oh and Micky is a beast. When his 99 card comes out he's never leaving my team.

Is is worth paying the extra cash to play early if I’m only a franchise guy?

For me it was, but that's because I wanted to play this weekend, but I also bought the Anniversary edition because I collect hats and while I really don't play DD, I do like to collect the virtual cards, so I have a use for the packs.

I waited until tues for the digital standard. It’s my fave game but over the last few years there have been a lot of framerate bugs that drive me nuts

It seems every year people say the gameplay is smoother, the framerate is amazing and blah blah blah. Then I get sucked into picking it up and it’s the same old same old, even using a Pro. Stuttering galore on foul balls, players running out the their positions and cutscenes look like a slideshow etc etc. On the fastest setting sure core gameplay is pretty smooth but myself and a lot of others out there are detail freaks. Going from 60fps to 30fps randomly throughout the experience is jarring and an immersion killer. Can’t believe it’s 2020 and games like MLB 2K7 had a better overall experience in this regard.

Hoping to hear more feedback on this issue, but from what I’m gathering so far it’s more of the same.

The frustrating thing for me is this is a Sony console, and a game made by Sony...and the frame rate issues have been around forever now it seems. It is a big eye sore for sure.

I don't pretend to know enough about the tech behind all of this, but could the PS4 (even the Pro) just not be powerful enough for all of the things going on in the MLB series, during a game? NBA 2K plays way smoother than the Show, Madden does, so many games do.

Frame rate during gameplay is my main concern, and after a short time with '20 it seems that gameplay will be way smoother than '19, which is awesome. There are definite frame rate drops elsewhere though, and it's very noticable. Oh well. I honestly expected this.
