Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

So, I've had 20 for just over a week now and I've noticed that All Star hitting is incredibly easier than the game's predecessors. I usually play franchise w/ AS hitting and HOF pitching and don't touch the sliders, but this year I'm scrambling to find the balance I've enjoyed in the past.

I'll probably take the leap to HOF hitting, but am I the only one who's noticed that the default pitch speed on AS is way slower this year? Only a few games into my season and I think my first 7 guys in the lineup all had 3 or 4 home runs.

To get back to what I generally enjoy, I've dropped the computer power and solid hits way down (everything they hit was a home run, it seemed) and ramped the pitch speed up at least 2 notches. Only then did hitting feel anywhere remotely close to the last couple of years.

Well, it has come to that time for me.

I really, really, really liked '20 out of the box. I personally thought it was the best that it has ever been. 10 patches later? This is just a mess of a game. Now I am not going over all of my personal issues with the game. Everyone here is aware of everyone else's issues with the game. Everyone is also aware of those folks that are happy with game.

I think '20 WAS a great game that is now a mediocre game at best. The continuing issues with fielding are huge for me and legacy issues just add on to the disappointment. Yes I am aware that I can turn on Auto Fielding. But that is not how I want to play the game. I get no enjoyment out of watching my PS4 play the game for me. Great if it's something you enjoy, but it's not for me.

I have lost a lot of faith in SDS and have very little confidence going forward. They have not been able to launch and maintain a stable product for years now and with the coming generation they are expanding to other platforms? Sorry I think this is going to be a disaster of massive proportions.

I can say a couple of things for sure.

      1. I really hope they get '20 squared away and in good form sooner rather than later.

      2. I have gone back to '19. A very stable game that at least I have faith that it will work as intended every time I play.

      3. I will most certainly never buy this game at launch ever again. I was not planning on buy '20 but a close friend bought it for me, so yeah.

I am not saying that '20 is a bad game on the whole. Its just not the game for me in its current state. For those that are enjoying it, I AM truly happy for you. I hope they fix it. I hope every game going forward is brilliant.

But for the time being I am out.

100% agree. Game out of the box was really good against the CPU. CPU is back not hitting, pop up after pop up from them now. Was a great challenge at launch now not so much. Competition is needed SO badly in this space

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

Been quite a long time since I've posted on here, but I thought I'd drop by with my impressions.

I haven't played the Show since '18, and that was only very sporadically. I've mostly been a PC gamer for the past couple years, and have kind of fallen out of love with sports games.

However, given the pandemic and how much I've missed baseball, I snagged the Show '20 yesterday. And my god I forgot how much I love the series.

For me, especially having not really played much since '17, this game is leaps and bounds better than what it used to be, especially on the visual side of things. I downloaded A&S sliders after grabbing the full minors roster (which, after all these years still blows me away at the level of detail you guys put into those rosters) and dove straight into franchise. I no longer care like I used to about controlling all 30 teams perfectly, so I picked the Mets as it's a fun division with some good young talent and a great 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation and dove in. I did make one trade, as hey, it's the only game we've ever had without an actual season going on, so this is my league now haha. I dealt Amed Rosario and two top prospects to the Indians for Lindor. I figured of any big name trade, that one makes the most sense given the rumors swirling around Lindor being dealt.

With that done, I set out to play my usual schedule where I pitch with my number 1, sim through his next start, then pitch with my number 2 and so on. This strikes a good balance for me so that I don't feel overwhelmed with the quantity of games and my stats in general as I have little influence on overall stats. I'm 4 played games in so far, and man, this game plays SO WELL. One thing I can tell they have improved leaps and bounds on is the difference between below average, average, and superstar level players. When I'm at the plate with Alonso, I feel that any ball I get wood on could wind up in the stands. The same can not remotely be said for the bottom of my lineup with far fewer hard hit balls. On the mound, pitching with DeGrom felt like carving through the lineup like a hot knife through butter. However, the same could be said facing Scherzer in that game. Both pitchers went 7IP with 12k and 2ER, basically mirrored performances. Even when I timed Scherzer up well, I wasn't able to get much going.

Onto the 3rd and 4th game I played, pitching with Stroman and Matz was much more difficult to keep the opposing lineup from plating runs and preventing hard hit balls. My lineup also exploded in game 3 against the Brew Crew and Adrian Houser, putting up 16 runs including a grand slam from Alonso and HR from Conforto and Cespedes.

All in all, I am loving everything about this game so far. I think part of it is just honestly taking a couple years off not treating it like a job anymore and just enjoying playing a game of baseball. Not everything is perfect, but damn is it close for me.

Interesting. This is a good way to get variety (of starting pitchers and opponents) without being overwhelmed by the number of games. Better than just playing one game per series.

I really miss the season mode and shortened schedules, especially the 14 game season, because you could burn through it quickly and every game was more meaningful, and the 29-game seasons because you play every team once. Hope they put that mode in next year, especially if they're not able to rotate Interleague schedules year after year.
It's on me. I shook his hand too hard. It was a hard ... kind of a slap-shake.

I have already played more games this year than I have any year since 15, and I am loving it.

The fielding issues were my only real complaint and it forced me to switch to auto fielding. However, a few games later I got used to it and have never looked back. I’m really looking forward to the series on next gen.

I've been a huge fan of the series over the years, but I'm close to shelving this year's game. I'm getting way too much offense. I want to play baseball, not home run derby.

Edit: I hate messing with sliders, but I'm going back to the slider drawing board to see if I can't come up with something to save the game for me.

Sorry to hear this, man. I've certainly enjoyed this year's offering, but there's been more rage-inducing incidents than in previous versions, that's for sure.

The game does a lot of things really really well. That's what's so frustrating.

I started over this week. Default sliders, HOF hitting and AS pitching. Won my first game, 8-5. Two homers for me and three for the CPU. OK, not too bad. Lost the second game, 9-7. Four homers apiece. Was up 8-4 in the fourth inning of my third game. I had already hit four homers (and just missed on two others) while the CPU had one. It just wasn't any fun continually launching balls.

If I can find something slider-wise that works for me, great. If not, I'll find something else to play.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

It's hard to quantify why I feel this year is more a disappointment than most. I guess it feels like the least progress was made as a whole? And I always feel that once we get to the end of a console generation, the innovation halts as more and more people are leaking over to work on the next gen iteration.

It's a tenuous cost vs benefit situation, I know. But I really hope not as much gets ported up the chain. Been seeing some of the same quirks of gameplay and animations since MLB 09. Building from scratch would mean barebones and a slow build to the level they had...just in time to have yet another console generational switch.

I still feel that I line out to the infield so much because i just aren't good enough to play with analog or zone hitting. Just happens way too much.

Da well. Game is still entertaining in the same ways it's always been...still I wish it felt...different. More fluid and closer to looking like human beings interacting with different objects and each other.

I played a few exhibition games last night and had the best time with the game so far. I went back to All-Star but buffed pitching and nerfed hitting with sliders. I'm hopeful I'll find my franchise groove.

The most fun I've had with 20 is when I've played random one-off games or gone through a March to October. I'm just fatigued with Franchise Mode, even though there's always a part of me that wants to dive in and keep going with my Mets carryover, I've enjoyed the break from the grind.

If I can't get going with Franchise, I'll probably give M2O a shot.

I was playing with non-Braves teams last night, so that was probably part of the fun.

I’m 50+ games into my franchise and I’m experiencing some fatigue as well. I don’t know if it’s because the real season is delayed or what but ....

I really enjoy the game while I’m playing but I don’t know.... something just seems to be missing this year.

Something new this year. You're forced to expand your MLB roster to 28 players on September 1st as you cannot play a game until you have 28 players. Previously you could wait until your minor league affiliates seasons were over.

                                Nice touch

Oh and minor league rosters remain at 26.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
