Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

Just a few exciting HRs I captured. I for one despise the HR camera as it takes alot of the excitement away in my opinion. The third video if watched from the beginning shows how I would have been robbed emotionally if the HR cam wasn't a foul ball lol. I'm the Reds in all videos as I bat from BTP view for broadcast feel while playing (zone + analog). For the videos the pitch speed was set to 0 and batting set to rookie just to make it easier to capture. One other thing I can say is that the delay in the camera switching from the batter making contact to when the ball is in play when offense is set to Dynamic is phenomenal...if this little bit of extra delay was added to the broadcast view it would take excitement to the next level in my opinion...I can only dream about that option one day.

I do a lot of complaining but my wife is the only one who hears me. You’re not the only one being squeezed.

I noticed the empty seats @Cincy "Great American Ball Park" was done nicely. Great attendance detail by SDS!

*crosses fingers* Now that I hope I've fixed the roster issues, I'm back to loving the game. Made a few minor slider tweaks to make All-Star a little bit harder, and the game is playing phenomenal for me.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

After skipping 18 and 19, due to what I felt was a lack of effort being put into Franchise mode, even though I enjoyed the game, but wanted to see a more realistic Franchise mode, so I went with OOTP, but decided to go with MLBTS20 this yr instead of OOTP.

My impressions after playing a couple games is, the game looks great as always, but its definitely gotten even better in 20. Game plays and feels about like it always has, which isn't a bad thing by any means, I always enjoyed the gameplay, although I am someone who uses auto fielding, except I make the throws, and I use auto base running as well. Reasoning is my reaction time and reflexes just aint what they use to be for multiple reasons.

The same complaint I had when I quit buying this game back when 18 came out is the lack of realism in Spring Training, and only having 1 ballpark for Grapefruit and Cactus leagues. Considering back in the PS3 days they had a few different ballparks to choose from, and now were close to the PS5 coming out, and we still only have 1 spring training ballpark for each league, is ridiculous.
I haven't started a Franchise just yet, but I assume there is no spring training invites, and my guess is the AI still manages the same as it always has during spring training games, which is disappointing if so.

Since I just got the game yesterday and only played a couple games, I cant really say if the other major issue I had with sim stats in Franchise mode have been improved to be more realistic or not, Im guessing they still aren't perfect just by reading some posts on here, but a few things seem to be better.

I figured with the delay to the season because of the Wuhan virus, and hard telling if or when we will see the season start, my OCD issues with realism I may be able to overcome, and just enjoy the game for what it is, which is the best console baseball game ever made, even if some things are off realism wise with stats in Franchise.

I do like that they seem to add some more fake MILB ballparks, which I like, as I do tend to play several of the Reds minor league teams games as well thruout the season.

There is some things that I have mentioned that frustrates me about not being improved upon in the 2 yrs I skipped buying this game, but as a whole, the game is great and Im sure I will get a lot of fun out of playing it this yr.

The CPU has improved in the way it manages the Lineup and Rotation in Spring Training. I’m about half way through ST and got a big dose of realism. Tanaka in the 2nd game and his 3rd inning of work had to leave the mound after he was injured. Turned out to be a Torn Rotator Cuff and he will be out 6 months. Mimicked the real life Yankees perfectly. Lucky I hadn’t pulled the pin on a Happ trade.

I don’t normally do a real life Franchise but like you I’m going to have a go this year because there is no season to compare it to yet. Failing that Bacons Fictional Roster is tremendous fun in Franchise without any pressure. It’s really taken off in the last couple of years that you’ve been away from the game. Good Luck!

Thats good to hear, that the CPU does manage rotations and lineups a little better in spring training. It really frustrates me that we still have just 2 spring training ballparks, especially when the PS3 had a few different ones to play in. I had also hoped for spring training invites by now.

Gameplay wise, its great, as usual, but it is disappointing that as long as they have been making MLBTS, that we don't have more than just 90 player slots per organization. I don't have to have single A and lower playable, but I had really hoped when we went from the PS3 to the PS4, we would have way more than 90 players per organization. For someone like me, who likes to follow real life injuries, and transactions its basically impossible to due with only 90 players in each organization.

I actually think with baseball on hold due to this virus, I will actually probably enjoy this game and overcome my OCD issues, with having to follow real life. I use to be able to just play, and make it my own little world, where I let the CPU make decisions on their own, and I would make my trades to build my team how I wanted, instead of having to keep everything to real life. So if 1 good thing comes out of this Wuhan virus, I may be able to kill off my OCD issues, for good, hopefully, LOL.
I have allowed my OCD issues ruin several sports games over the past several yrs, because of stats not being realistic in some areas, in both NBA2k and MLBTS, and me having to have everything just right. I spent more time editing and following real life transactions and injuries, that really ruined some very good games, even if stats were off in some areas. Im slowly conquering that OCD disease, LOL.

Im not sure I want to go the fictional route player wise, even though Baseball Stars back in the day on Nintendo was probably the most fun I ever had playing a video game. I played that game till it would no longer play, and the screen went black. Im just going to use real players, and let things play out in a fictional way, even if we get real baseball back in a few weeks, Im going to stick with 1 Franchise this yr, and just let it play out however it may. I cant remember when the last time it was that I played deep into a Franchise mode, I know its been yrs. Probably baseball wise, it was probably MLBTS09, when I got a few yrs deep into franchise. Back then, we had no 30 team control, or able to manually injure guys, so you had to let things play out in fictional way. I don't know why I got so OCD about everything having to stay like things are IRL. I suppose when they started adding in 30 team control and manually being able to injure players, is when I caught that horrible disease that is OCD, LOL

One season in the books (I played about 30, quick-managed the rest)

                    Positives
                    -General gameplay
-Player individuality (stances, mannerisms, attributes, HR animations etc.)
                    -Fielding
                    -Ballpark graphics
                    -Improved facial models
-Improved hitting 'feel' and hit variety
-Increase in variety of swing followthrough animations
                    -Complex player morale system

                    Negatives
-Inability to remove "signature followthrough" home run animation. <-- I want to see where the ball ends up. Please.
-Extremely limited expansion/rebranding options (stadiums, in particular)
                    -SpringTraining-->Opening Day roster recalibration (glitch?)
-Limited Spring Training, Minors, Classic stadiums -- this has felt stale for years
-Inability to switch defensive positions during quick manage
-Animations are hit or miss. Certainly a bit clunky and tired compared to gameplay seen in the Japanese baseball video game.
-Misleading "Full Minors" marketing (additionally, buff prospects like Wander appear far too wiry and thin)
-Strange simulation results: super-strong correlation between low K/9 (sub 7.5K/9) starting pitchers and Wins accumulation.
                    -Laserbeam sac bunts

Playing at the Pirates against the Blue Jays, I had Travis Shaw in an 0-2 count and tried to punch him out on a change-up in the dirt but left it hanging and he knocked it out of the park, prompting me to curse myself for my carelessness.
Next time Shaw's at bat, Plesac mentions he hit a change-up out of the park in his previous at-bat.
Commentary can get repetitive, especially in a 162-game season, but it's often highly intuitive. For example, I'll miss location, leaving a slider or change-up hanging to a power hitter and immediately think to myself I dodged a bullet, and next thing you know, they're saying something to the effect of "He's lucky that didn't get taken yard."
However, as much as I like Heidi Whatney on MLB Tonight, she is flat-out annoying in the game and needs to be removed next year.
It's on me. I shook his hand too hard. It was a hard ... kind of a slap-shake.

"What? You can't challenge a scoring play?''

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

After playing a few more games, it seems 1 thing that's been improved a lot since I last played this game in 17, is Im seeing more errors by the CPU, and that's with default error sliders too. This was 1 of the few gameplay issues I had over the yrs with this game, is the CPU just never committed enough errors. So I hope they don't screw this up in a patch.

Unfortunately after playing a few Spring Training games, it does look like the CPU still doesn't manage Spring Training games properly. They still use the very next starting pitcher to pitch 1 inning the day before he starts, which isn't realistic at all. Also starters stay in the game too long, before being taken out. Especially early in ST'ing, your starters really should only play about half the game, and taken out after a couple at bats each game, then gradually increase the innings they play near the end of spring training.

Im enjoying the game, the gameplay is great, I know some are complaining about fielding issues, but I play with auto fielding, except I make the throws. I use to do manual fielding, but I prefer the animations that you get to see with fielding on auto, and quite frankly my reaction time just isn't very good anymore, as Ive gotten older, and due to health issues, I am on meds, that also slows my reaction time as well, so auto fielding and baserunning, just works best for me.

I do hope when the PS5 comes out, we see a much deeper Franchise mode, with a more realistic spring training, with non roster invites, and a more realistic spring training, where the CPU manages it more like IRL.
Also there needs to be a lot more player slots, than 90 per organization. I don't have to have A ball and lower MILB teams playable, like AA and AAA, but something needs to be done, to make things more realistic like we see in OOTP. I know the console game likely wont ever be able to be as deep as what OOTP is, due to memory limits, that you don't have to worry about on PC's, but SDS does need to make Franchise mode a bit more realistic, as far as having more than just 90 players per organization.

Gameplay wise, MLBTS20 does there sport better than any of the other sports games out there. The only one close would be NBA2k, and it really isn't all that close, as far as Im concerned, because the devs of NBA2k cant get simple things like not enough fouls being called, nor near enough non steal turnovers right. But NBA2k definitely has the better Franchise mode, and better commentators.

MLBTS has always been a solid game, and 20 is no different, but unless we see a major upgrade to Franchise mode, chances are my console gaming days may be coming to a end. I only play basketball and baseball, and once every few yrs, I break down and buy Madden, and always end up regretting it, LOL. But I feel with this online gaming popularity becoming the norm for this younger generation, and this younger generation being less interested in realism from a Franchise standpoint, that these companies are no longer putting as much effort and focus on Franchise mode, as they are only concerned about the online play and their gimic fantasy modes, like MyTeam and Diamond Dynasty, which I have no interest in at all.

I get its a business and the days of true diehard sports fans that play Franchise mode are a minority, due to all the casual sports fans that this younger generation tends to be, so your obviously going to put more effort in those online modes that they are able to profit off of. I get that, after all the goal of any good business man is to make as much money as possible. So Im not mad, just disappointed more in this younger generation than anything, lol.

                              Negatives
-Inability to remove "signature followthrough" home run animation. <-- I want to see where the ball ends up. Please.
-Extremely limited expansion/rebranding options (stadiums, in particular)
                              -SpringTraining-->Opening Day roster recalibration (glitch?)

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread

Had to abandon my user vs. cpu franchise due to sight issues. So at a friends advice I moved to Manage Mode. I really thought my interest would not be held if I wasn’t fielding (auto) and throwing (manual), plus pitching. Well, shockingly I was wrong.

Love the BACKSTOP view. Opens up the field and actually watching the ump call the game is an added presentation surprise.

You really do feel like you’re managing the game from the dugout, calling pitch locations during specific pitch counts, e.g. 2-1 call for high and in, or low and away. Due to attributes/fatigue/confidence not every pitch may wind up where you hope. Hit and run, steal a base, take a pitch 3-1, etc.

Don’t have the frustration of flailing at balls if I actually had the controller in my hand. Find the frustration level of controller user error is gone as I watch the game unfold in front of me.

Get to really concentrate on the little things, for me anyway, actually slowing the game down just a bit to look at stats, bullpens, etc., etc.

Still play with commentary off, some SOTS added, and quick counts.

All I all, I’m all in with this mode, relaxing and enjoying the heck out of it. 30 team control let’s me explore all teams and make some demotions due to poor performance on other teams.

Don’t see myself going back any day soon. Play, or should I say, Manage ball!!!!
