    Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2022

Verlander-McCullers set for Game One In Chicago

Game One of the World Series opened under clear skies at Wrigley with it being a blustery 43 degrees. Verlander, a starter for Houston a year ago, was not resigned and looked to get a quick start against his former teammates. He did just that as he struck out 2 and got a fly out to end the top of the first. While both teams were known for having power bats, Game One was a pitchers duel through and through as both teams had just 4 combined through the first 5 innings. The Cubs had 3 of those hits and looked to set the table in the 4th after Rizzo was able to get on board. In the next at bat Willson Contreras was able to hit a dribbler up the middle that just missed the outstretched hands of SS Carlos Correa for another hit. Play was stopped after Correa remained on the ground holding his hand after attempting to drive for the ball. Correa would be removed from the game. Myles Straw took over at short for the rest of the game and Houston will have to wait for X-Rays to see how long they might be without Correa.

Moving to the 6th inning with the game still scoreless, The Cubs again got into scoring position after a Rizzo double and Contreras walked with no outs. Schwarber just missed a pitch but the result was a fly out to right that was just deep enough to move runners to 3rd and 2nd. Javy Baez came to the plate already with one hit to his name and was able to smack a ball to deep center field. Springer was able to corral it but the long 2nd out saw Rizzo tag up for the first run of the game.

In the 7th Verlander was still going strong but ran into trouble after he gave up a 1 out double to Myles Straw to put a man in scoring position with the 3 and 4 hitters up. Verlander was about to get out of the jam as he struck out his 7th batter of the night and induced a ground out to get out of the inning. Verlander was pinch hit for ending his night but contributed with those 7 K’s in 7 innings of scoreless work while only allowing 3 men to get on base.

The 8th inning saw no runs scored as Miller came in and got 3 quick outs on 11 pitches with 2 strike outs. Kimbrel came in to face the top of the order; The Cubs closer had his ups and downs in the regular season but had been perfect so far in 5 innings of postseason work as he has allowed no runs and with 12 K’s. Altuve changed that on the 2nd pitch he saw as he hit a high fly ball that carried and just snuck into the left field bleachers to tie it at 1-1. Houston proceeded to get a single after the home run as Kimbrel appeared to be self-destructing as the next count went 3-0 and no outs. Kimbrel was able to avoid further disaster as he was able to get a pop on a 3-1 count and then struck out the next 2 batters. The Cubs could not do anything in their half of the 9th and the North Siders found themselves going to extra innings for the 3rd time in these playoffs.

Carl Edwards Jr came in in the 10th and 11th and was masterful as he allowed no hits or walks and struck out 4 in two innings of work. In the bottom of the 11th, The Cubs had the heart of the order up. Rizzo just missed a hit down the left field line that went foul and proceeded to strike out for out number 1. Contreras was able to battle back from a 1-2 count to get on first with a single. The pitcher spot was up next due to a double switch and Howie Kendrick was brought off the bench. Hendrick has struggled in limited play as he has gotten just one hit in the postseason but he changed that with a bloop single - the slow footed Kendrick stayed at first but Contreras was able to hustle to 3rd on the play. This brought up Javy Baez. after missing badly on a inside strike, the next pitch was a hanging curveball by Stephen Woods caught too much of the plate; Javy squared up to split the infield to get through to center to score Contreras for the walk off. Many would question Houston’s manager Dusty Baker, as he chose to go to Woods in the 11th while still having his top pitchers Osuna and Pressley. As noted before the game Baez had struggled leading up to this game in the postseason but he showed to be the key to victory as he went 2 for 4 and drove in both the Cubs’ runs.

After the game Houston announced that Correa’s X-Ray was negative but was diagnosed with what the Houston medical staff labeled a finger contusion; Carlos will be absent for the rest of the World Series as he was removed from the playoff roster and Jack Mayfield was added. Mayfield played a limited role for the club as he spent time in Triple A; he did appear in 60 games for Houston and batted .290.

      The Amazins

Mets Take 2 of 3 in Miami
      April 17, 2024

The Mets took the bookend games of the series and have gotten off to a 5-2 record against the team that prematurley eliminated them from the playoffs last year.

Game 1 was a 4-1 win highlighted by a first inning 2R HR by Michael Conforto. Dakota Chalmers continued his impressive start to the season with six innings of one run ball. He struck out 5 and walked 2 while giving up just 5 hits.

In Game 2, the Mets bats disappeared. They managed 9 hits, 4 of which were doubles, but they were unable to push a run across the plate. Sean Machado was impressive again, giving up one run over 6 innings. His ERA is at 1.00 on the season so far, and he's making a case for moving into the rotation permanently.

The bats woke up in Game 3, and the Mets took the series finale 10-4. The offense was led by none other than Rafael Devers. He went 3-5 with a HR, 2B, and 4 RBI.

After yet another day off (their third in the last week), the Mets are headed to Atlanta for a three game set, followed by three games in Cincinnati. After their 4th day off of the month, the Mets will finish the month of April hosting the Braves and the Cubs.

RHP Julio Alvarez Continues to Struggle

The submariner has been a staple in the Mets bullpen since 2021, but he has yet to find his groove this year. He last appeared in Game 2 against the Marlins, and surrendered a home run in the bottom of the 7th of a one run ballgame. In 9 innings this season, he's given up 3 HR and has an ERA of 6.00, as well as a WHIP of 1.44. His numbers are significantly inflated from last season where he had a 2.04 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 70.2 innings.

The Mets are hoping a bump to some lower-leverage spots will help to right the ship. In the meantime, expect RHP Kelvin Herrera and RHP Nathan Eovaldi to get some extra work. Fortunately, Herrera is looking like the guy the Mets were expecting when they signed him before last season. He's got a 1.64 ERA, 0,92 WHIP, with 18 K in 11 IP.

Cardinals move Michael Wacha back into the rotation

The Cardinals have moved 34 year old Michael Wacha back into the rotation going forward. Wacha, who was spot starting and pitching out the pen most of the season, made 2 starts in place of Dakota Hudson who was placed on the injured list, and won both starts, pitched deep in both starts and looked like the Michael Wacha who won the NL Cy Young award 6 years ago.

Having Wacha back in the rotation now means the Cardinals must find a spot for Dakota Hudson, which would seem like the bullpen, but the pen is actually pitching well with the arms available that the Cardinals aren't looking to upset the apple cart. So what to do now? Hudson can't be optioned to Memphis without first clearing waivers and the chances of that happening are slim for the 31 year old.

The rest of the rotation is fairly locked with Kyle Funkhouser, Josh Rogers, Junior Fernandez and Jack Flaherty. It will be interesting to see what the Cardinals do now that Hudson is off the IL.

Eddie Ortiz moved into everyday right field position

24 year old Eddie Ortiz is now the everyday right fielder for the Cardinals as he played well there, while Juan Fabregas was on the IL and Dylan Carlson moved to left. With Fabregas back in the lineup, the Cardinals have been flip flopping Carlson and Ortiz in right. After a week of that experiment manager Mike Matheny has decided that Eddie Ortiz now be the everyday right fielder, hitting 5th in the lineup. Ortiz is batting .312 on the year with 2 homeruns and 12 RBI's. One detract for Ortiz is his lack of power but the Cardinals are hopeful that comes along as he gets older.

Carlson will once again be moved to the bench which isn't a popular spot for the 28 year old. With C.J. McElroy also there and having a better season than Carlson, expect Carlson to be the 5th outfielder for the time being, which could equate to a not so friendly clubhouse.

Cardinals listening to offers on Kolten Wong

35 year old Kolten Wong has been a Cardinal his entire career and thoughts were that he would finish his career in St.Louis. Well, that may or may not be the case now as the Cardinals have informed the other 29 clubs that they are will to entertain offers for Wong.

Wong is having a horrible season where he is batting just .176 and has struck out in 35% of his at-bats and isn't drawing walks at the rate that he has the past two seasons where he led the majors in walks drawn. Add to that fact that he has committed more errors 8 thru May of this season than he did in all of 2025.

While his numbers and play are down, there is no shortage of interest in his services, with the Yankees being the most intrigued. Others include the Mariners, Nationals, and Dodgers. The return may not be what it used to be, but there is a decent return rate available.

Not sure if the Cardinals will move the beloved 2nd baseman or not, but its possible, if the Carlos Martinez roster moves proves anything.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Syndergaard to be Activated from the IL
          April 18, 2024

Noah Syndergaard will make his return from the IL tomorrow in Game 1 against the Atlanta Braves. He strained his back in the second inning of his last start, and the Mets decided to be overly cautious with the 31 year old.

In two full starts this season, Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 15 K in 14 IP. So far it looks like Thor is not yet ready to give up his place on the mantle of best pitchers in the Majors.

RHP Louis Elias will be optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, and LHP Sean Machado will be moved back to the bullpen. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw Machado get some work as a starter going forward, as he pitched wonderfully in the two starts he made in Syndergaard's absence.

The Brewers were unstoppable in the NL central this year as they won 99 games, had the 1st and 2nd place votes for MVP with Bichette and Yelich and their other offseason acquisition Brendan McKay won the Cy Young.

The Cubs will look to be sneaky good in the playoffs as they do not have the firepower the Brewers have. They will take on the Miami Marlins (83-79) and young ace Ronald Guzman.

NL Wild Card Game: Cubs Vs Marlins
SP Jose Berrios (12-16, 3.66ERA) VS SP Ronald Guzman (11-8, 4.08ERA)

The Cubs struck early in this one. Guzman was in his first playoff appearance and looked as nervous as expected. The Cubs got 3 runs in the 1st inning thanks to a 3-0 count 3RHR blast from Miguel Sano to open up the game early for the Cubs.

The Marlins answered back in the 2nd with a RBI double from 1B Grant Lavigne.

It was quiet until the 5th, with the Cubs leading 3-1 the Marlins surged and started hitting everything Berrios was throwing. They jumped to a 4-3 lead before the Cubs could even manage one out. Berrios was quickly taken out of the game in favor of RP Craig Reese who somehow managed to get out of a bases loaded jam with no more damage done. Marlins lead 4-3 after 5.

All was quiet heading into the bottom of the 9th where the Cubs season was 3 outs away from being suddenly over. First batter Sano hit a rifle of a pitch deep to left field where the Marlins fielder caught the ball slamming into the ivy for out #1. Baez followed up with another hard hit ball to left of his own, this time it got out of the playing field for a game tying solo HR in the 9th. Cubs were able to tie it in epic fashion. This WC game is going to extras.

Cubs RP Rowan Wick cruised through the 10th, the Cubs on the other hand put pressure on the Marlins. The Cubs had 2 outs quickly, but then with back to back hits by Soto/Sano had runners at 1st/3rd with 2 outs. Baez again could be a hero, and he hit the ball hard to left, but right to the LF for out 3. To inning 11.

The game cruised along to the bottom of the 12th when the Cubs had back to back singles to start the inning. A dribbler from Browning allowed the runners to move to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Soto grounded out, and with 2 outs Miguel Sano delivered a single to LF to win the game for the Cubs and advance them to the NLDS! Sano was huge going 3-6, with 4RBI in the game. The bullpen was drained and hopefully will be ready to roll for game 1. The Cubs will have to take on the archrival Brewers.
              NLDS Cubs Vs Brewers 2026

              Game 1: Julio Urias (13-8, 3.99ERA) VS Brendan McKay (14-6, 3.55)

Game 1 was an NLDS classic. The Cubs and Brewers were locked in an absolute pitchers duel in game 1, with neither pitcher giving up a run until the 8th inning.

This does not mean there was not some crazy moments. The Cubs had two back to back innings where they left the bases loaded with no runs scored.

They could not get the runs in. Julio Urias pitched an absolute gem to keep the Cubs tied through 7. Unfortunately, he got 2 runs scored off of him in the 8th.

The Brewers brought in Josh Hader to close it out. The Cubs had 2 on, with 2 outs when Miguel Sano hit a deep 3 run blast to straightaway center to give the Cubs the lead, and the win. The Cubs won 4-2 and bounce back in underdog fashion to beat the heavily favored Brewers in game 1.

              Game 2: Jose Serrano (11-14, 4.79ERA) Vs Adrian Houser (11-9, 3.67)

Game 2 was a blowout from the beginning. The Cubs struck early and often, getting on the board in the 1st with an Javier Baez Rbi single, the Cubs added 3 more runs in the 3rd With a Gary Scruggs sac fly RBI and a 2 run double by Kyle Schwarber.

The Cubs added another 3 in the 4th with a 2RHR from Juan Soto and a Solo HR from Sano.

The Cubs never looked back and easily won 9-1, they did not need any pitcher outside of starter Jose Serrano as he pitched an absolute gem. Throwing a complete game 1 run performance where he added 6K’s and gave the bullpen more days of rest.

Cubs are shocking leading the Brewers 2-0.

              Game 3: Brailyn Marquez (14-10, 4.21) VS Peter Rice (15-6, 3.41)

Game 3 was a pitchers duel to begin with. The Cubs and Brewers were scoreless through 3 innings. The Brewers put a 3 spot up on the Cubs starter Brailyn Marquez. He was taken out, and the Brewers were held scoreless the rest of the guys thanks to the Cubs bullpen.

The Cubs could not get anything going against Brewers starter Peter Rice, in fact he was so good he was 1 out away from throwing a complete game shutout against the Cubs, but he gave up a solo HR to Javier Baez in the 9th for the Cubs lone run in the game.

The Cubs lose, but they still lead the series overall 2-1, with ace Jose Berrios on the mound for game 4 looking to close out the series.

              Game 4: Jose Berrios (12-16, 3.66) VS Taijuan Walker (13-10, 4.28)

Berrios was not good in the WC game, and he was unable to put forward a better performance in this game. Berrios was knocked around for 2 runs in the 1st, the Cubs were able to cut that early lead in half with a solo HR from Juan Soto in the 1st inning as well, 2-1 Brewers after 1.

The game cruised on until the 5th inning when Mookie Betts added a solo HR of his own to extend the Brewers lead to 3-1. The Cubs again answered back with one of their own, courtesy of Kyle Schwarber.

The game remained 3-2 until the 7th when Berrios got pushed out of the game, surrendering 2 more runs via back to back doubles by Betts and Yelich to give the Brewers a 5-2 lead.

Brewers added another in the 8th, and the Cubs were down to 6 outs, down 4 runs. The Cubs added 2 in the 8th with a Henry Browning RBI single, and a Juan Soto sac fly.

Again, the Brewers added another in the 9th, and that was all she wrote. The
Cubs after having a 2-0 lead in the series has now squandered and the series is suddenly tied.

Many knew the Cubs were underdogs coming in, and the talented Brewers were not going down without a fight, and now it moves on to a do or die game 5.

              Game 5: Julio Urias (13-8, 3.99ERA) VS Brendan McKay (14-6, 3.55)

A rematch of game 1 was set for game 5, even though Urias is not 100% rested heading into the game. The Cubs were hoping for some magic from the mound, and that is exactly what they got.

Urias on a short leash was able to provide 5 scoreless innings for the Cubs, giving up 4 hits and striking out 3. The Cubs were trusting in their bullpen the rest of the way.

The Cubs did get on the board in the 2nd VS Brendan McKay when Javier Baez clubbed a solo HR to right field for the 1st run of the game. Both pitchers settled in for the remainder of their outings with neither giving up another run.

The game was all goose eggs until the 7th when the Brewers tied up the game with a Kirtley solo HR to left which tightened the game up late. The Cubs would put this game away in the 8th. Cubs started the inning with a single by Wilmer Flores, followed by a walk by Anthony Williams. Runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs on a wild pitch. Prime position for the Cubs to put up some runs, Alan Quick hit a sac fly to bring in the go ahead run, and Tim Anderson decided to bring in the rest of the runners with a 3RHR that put the Cubs ahead 5-1, and that’s all they needed in a clean 9th.

Cubs win 5-1, and win the series 3-2 over the heavily favored Brewers. San Francisco and Kris Bryant are next in the NLCS.

Syndergaard Throws Six Scoreless in His Return, Mets win 9-0
                April 19, 2024

The 4x CY Young winner extinguished any potential concerns about his return from injury, giving up zero runs over six innings with five strikeouts. He did surrender nine hits, but they were scattered, and the Braves (8-15) never threatened.

Michael Conforto and Rafael Devers paced the offense. The three and four hitters went a combined 6-10 with 2 HR, 2B, 5 RBI, 3 R. The Mets as a team racked up 16 H, with six different players driving in a run.

It was also nice to see Julio Alvarez bounce back and throw a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two.

Game 2 features a matchup between Walker Buehler and Douglas Fletcher.

                  TRUE TO THE BLUE

                  2020 Seattle Mariners (25-36)

Mariners Go .500 in May Monday, June 1st, 2020
To end the month of May, the Mariners split a two-game series in Washington, dropped three of four in New York against the Yankees, swept the Tigers in Detroit, and won the final game of a three-game series against the Braves on their return home. Their May record settled at 14-14, but their team rankings hardly improved. On offense, the M’s currently rank 14th in Runs (267), 8th in AVG (.272), 9th in OBP (.348), 21st in SLG (.408), 24th in HR (62), and 19th in SB (32). The pitching staff is 29th in Runs Allowed (304) and ERA (4.99) and is 30th in HR Allowed (98) and Strikeouts (339). While their record has improved, the team’s overall performance has remained constant.

Though the Mariners are eleven games under .500 on the season, several individual performances deserve to be recognized. Tom Murphy, out-slugging all AL catchers with .571 and 2nd in HR by a catcher with 13, is third in AL All-Star voting for his position. Right fielder Mitch Haniger trails only Twins slugger Nelson Cruz in All-Star votes for their position; Cruz, at 39-years old, leads the AL in AVG (.366), HR (21), and RBI (51) and is the current favorite to win AL MVP. Haniger is 4th in WAR (3.1), 5th in Hits (74), 4th in BB (37), and 8th in OBP (.403). Justus Sheffield sports the 10th-lowest WHIP among AL starting pitchers with 1.14 through 12 starts.

The Mariners will make their selections in the 2020 MLB Draft, in which they have the 6th overall pick, on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the M’s 26-man roster entering June:

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

                    NLCS 2026: Cubs Vs Giants

                    Game 1: Jose Serrano (11-14, 4.79ERA) Vs Nate Pearson (10-10, 3.63)

The Cubs trusted young 22 year old Jose Serrano on the mound in game 1, after throwing a Complete Game in the NLDS VS the Brewers. Serrano was as good as advertised, going 7IP, 9H, 6SO, 1ER.

The Cubs got on the board in the 1st with a solo HR from Juan Soto that was an absolute laser to the RF bleachers, the Cubs struck again In the 3rd with an RBI single from Tim Anderson.
The Giants cut the lead in half in their side of the 3rd with a Drew Jackson RBI single. This would be the only run given up by Serrano, as he cruised through 7.

The Cubs did not give up another run, and neither did the Giants, the game ended 2-1. The Cubs had 12 hits, but only 2 runs were needed and it was enough to give the Cubs a 1-0 advantage in the NLCS.

                    Game 2: Jose Berrios (12-16, 3.66) VS Logan Webb (8-14, 4.71)

Game 2 was a wild one. Berrios was on the mound for the Cubs. Berrios has struggled to this point in the postseason, having logged only 10IP in 2 starts with a 7+ ERA.
Berrios got off to a hot start in this one, giving up his first run in the 4th off a double by young stud catcher Harvey Sanchez. This tied the game at 1, as the Cubs scored a run in the top half of the inning thanks to a Javy Baez sac fly that scored Henry Browning.

The Cubs added two more runs in the 6th with back to back home runs courtesy of Juan Soto and Miguel Sano. This gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead, and Berrios took that lead into the 8th.

The Cubs went to the pen in the 8th, and it blew up horribly. The Giants put together a slew of hits, and the go ahead runs were driven in by former Cubs legend Kris Bryant, the Giants put up a 4 spot, and took a 5-3 lead after 8.

The Cubs were stunned, and could not rally in the 9th and lost the game 5-3, and this tied the series up 1-1. It was a game that slipped through the Cubs hands, despite them only obtaining 5 hits, they were in position to win late and squandered it.
                    Series heads to Wrigley. 1-1.

                    Game 3: Brailyn Marquez (14-10, 4.21) VS Tarik Stubal (13-6, 3.43)

Cubs got out of the gates running in this one scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning via a Juan Soto RBI and Sano RBI. The Cubs were able to score 2 more runs in the 4th with a 2 run homer from Javier Baez to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

Brailyn Marquez was pitching an absolute gem in this game, and did not give up a run until the 7th inning, unfortunately it blew up for him and he gave up 4 runs in the inning and the game was suddenly tied. Another comeback for the Giants.
Most of the runs came from a pinch hit 3rHR from Tromp.

The Cubs were immediately able to gain the lead back in the bottom half of the 8th with a Tim Anderson RBI double, and a Henry Browning RBI double, Cubs lead 6-4 and Clyde Booker closed out the 9th inning for a win, and a 2-1 series lead for the Cubs.

                    Game 4: Julio Urias (13-8, 3.99ERA) VS Joe Musgrove (7-11, 3.22ERA)

The Cubs yet again struck early in the 1st when Tim Anderson doubled to lead off the game, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Cubs scored 2 more runs in the 3rd thanks to a 2 Run Homer from Henry Browning to make the score 3-0 after 3.

Urias was cruising in this one, and did not give up a run until the 6th when OF Mallex Smith hit a 2 run homer that scored Kris Bryant and cut the score to 3-2 Cubs. Urias overall was phenomenal, going 7IP, 2ER, 10K’s and this continues his absolute dominance so far in the postseason.

The Cubs answered back in the bottom half with Henry Browning now scoring on a wild pitch.

The 7th inning saw Tim Anderson drive in Kyle Schwarber on a single and give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. The lead held, as Clyde Booker notched a save despite giving up another HR to Mallex Smith.
Cubs lead 3-1, and are 1 win away from another World Series appearance.

                    Game 5: Jacob DeGrom (13-11, 4.07ERA) Vs Nate Pearson (10-10, 3.63)

The Cubs opted to go with Jacob DeGrom in game 5 with a 3-1 series lead. DeGrom has yet to make an appearance for the Cubs this postseason. The 37 year old, gave up a run in the 1st thanks to a Mallex Smith RBI single, and this gave the Giants an early lead. It did not last long as Juan Soto hit his 5th HR of the postseason to tie the game at 1, after 1.

The Cubs added another in the 2nd with a Mario Dorta double that scored Henry Browning. This gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead that would last until the 4th. DeGrom fell apart and gave up 3 runs in the inning with a 2 run Homer by Trey Mancini and an Eddie Rosario solo hr to give the Giants a 4-2 lead.
The Cubs added 2 of their own in the bottom of the 4th with a 2 run homer by Kyle Schwarber to tie the game at 4. The Cubs added more in the 5th putting up 3 runs on a Henry Browning solo HR, and a Dorta 2 RBI double to give the Cubs a commanding 7-4 lead after 5.

The Giants added another with a solo HR from young stud catcher Harvey Sanchez, which made the score 7-5. All was quiet until the 9th when All-star Closer Clyde Booker came in to shut down and eliminate the Giants. This did not happen. Booker imploded and gave up 3 runs and the lead after Kris Bryant had a bases clearing double that gave the Giants an 8-7 lead in the 9th.

The Cubs did not give up, and they were able to tie up the game with a sac fly by Javier Baez which scored Anthony Williams who substituted for catcher Kyle Schwarber. Cubs avoid another collapse, and head to extras.

The Cubs bullpen cruised through the 10th, and Alan Quick led off the bottom half of the 10th with a walk. This was followed by a double for Tim Anderson, which put the Cubs in prime position to win. 0 outs, runners at 2nd and 3rd with Juan Soto coming up. He is obviously walked to load the bases, and Anthony Williams delivered a hard enough hit grounder that the Cubs walked away with the win. A series clincher and an NL pennant. The Cubs have returned to the World Series again!

Cubs win 9-8, Win Series 4-1. Advance to World Series.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Giants came into Atlanta playing well and took 2 out of 3.

We finished 3-3 on our last homestand of the season. Probably won't get the Wild Card game in Atlanta, if we make it all. We are hanging tough. Our record 85-72, tied with the Cards for 3rd in the WC and 0.5GB of the 2nd WC spot. That is being held by the Reds who are 85-71.

The Nationals are leading the WC by 2.5 gms. They have 6 games in a row remaining all at home.We have 5 games remaining on the season 2 vs K.C. and 3 vs. NYM. We have an off day between the two series. I was facing a conundrum with our rotation for the last 5 games. Fried and Newcomb are our best pitchers going. They are scheduled to pitched the two games in K.C.. I was thinking of moving SP Max Fried, who is a 19 game winner, with a 2.69ERA to the Mets finale. But the way the Wild Card Standings are we might be in play for a play-in scenario for the Wild Card entry. So if I go with Newc & Fried now they will be available for the Wild Card play-in scenario or on the bump for the Wild Card game.

I do believe Folty, Teheran who is a 17 game winner and Soroka can give us quality starts vs. the Mets. ... If we get quality starts we have chance's @ wins....

Anyone else think the game values pitchers with high win totals too highly for MVP?

I had absolutely monster seasons with both Strasburg and Soto but Stras was leading in MVP voting until Soto ended the season by hitting 14 home runs in the last 9 games and passing Bellinger in RBI to get the triple crown. But really the thing that makes me think the game is over valuing pitchers in the MVP race is that Scherzer was third in voting. He had pretty normal Scherzer stats besides having 24 wins. 3rd place definitely should have been Bellinger who was second place in every stat except homeruns. He had stats that would absolutely win the MVP in real life.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

                          I started a Marlins throwback.

Imagine a seismic retrofit issue or other sudden structural problem that forces the Marlins to play one season at the old Miami stadium.

The media narrative would be: same old Marlins, what a bad organization -- setting up a perfect underdog story to troll the baseball world.

It's a fast team but keep adding speed to fit the cavernous ballpark dimensions. Maybe a blockbuster for Buxton or the inevitable Kiermaier trade. Maybe add Puig to hit cleanup on a one year deal -- shades of the Pudge Rodriguez deal back in the day.

The batter's eye is amazing. Singles become doubles. Guys like Dickerson and Brian Anderson rake. Plus there's that old school scoreboard in left.

And if you do make the playoffs, 100,000 fans turn the park into an intimidating home field advantage -- as we saw in '97 and '03.

I'm not sure on this one. In my franchise. Sale in the AL,is leading the MVP race. He now has 21 wins, ERA under 2 & less than 6 losses. He didn't show up in the MVP race until August.

J.D. Martinez is 2nd in the MVP, with 40HR,12O +RBI's....

About to play the biggest game of the season in my Red Sox franchise as the Red Sox went into New York to begin a 3 game series with the 1st place Yankees trailing by 2.5 games and have taken the first two games to pull within a half game and the winner of the series finale will be in first place

                              Game #1 of the series

TNK - Boston Red Sox Franchise
                              Game #145 of Season

Boston Red Sox (92-52) @ New York Yankees (94-49)
Pitching Matchup - Collin McHugh vs JA Happ

The Red Sox and Yankees begin a 3 game series at Yankee Stadium in a huge showdown that could decide who wins the AL East. The Red Sox will need play some of their best baseball of the season down the stretch as they trail the Yankees by 2.5 games for 1st place in the division and will be looking to take at least 2 out of 3 and could move ahead of the Yankees with a sweep of this series while the Yankees have a chance to bury the Red Sox and give themselves some breathing room in the standings. Boston will have Collin McHugh on the mound in the opener while New York will counter with JA Happ

The Yankees opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd when Giancarlo Stanton doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a RBI double by Brett Gardner to give New York a 1-0 lead. The Red Sox were threatening in the top of the 3rd as they had runners on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out and Alex Verdugo would drive a high fly ball deep to right-center and pickup the RBI as Judge would make the catch on the warning track and Vazquez scored tying the game at 1-1. Rafael Devers was at the plate with Pillar on 3rd base and 2 outs when Happ bounced a ball in the dirt that got away from Sanchez and Pillar came racing to the plate but Sanchez was able to gather and flip to Happ covering the plate and Pillar was out to end the inning. Happ and McHugh were both pitching very well as they would get through the 4th and 5th innings with ease and the game would move to the 6th inning tied 1-1. The Yankees would move ahead in the bottom of the 6th when Judge doubled with 1 out and McHugh tried to come inside on Gleyber Torres who turned on a fastball and hit a towering shot down the LF line that stayed fair for a 2-run HR to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Heath Hembree replaced McHugh on the mound and would get the final two outs to send the game to the 7th inning with New York leading 3-1. Happ would retire Martinez, Moreland and Chavis in order in the top of the 7th and Luke Voit would lead off the bottom of the 7th with a 437 foot bomb to CF off Hembree to make it a 4-1 game. rrTaylor came on and would get through the inning and the game would move to the 8th inning with the Yankees leading 4-1. Happ returned to the mound to start the top of the 8th and issued a lead off walk to Vazquez ending his night as Zack Britton came in from the pen. Kevin Pillar would swing at the first pitch from Britton and lined a rocket past Voit for a double to put two men in scoring position with nobody out. Britton would get a huge strikeout of Bradley for the 1st out bringing up Alex Verdugo who drove a ball into the gap for a RBI double that scored two runs to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3. Britton came back with a big strikeout of Devers for the 2nd out and Xander Bogaerts would line a single into RF with 2 outs but the ball was hit too hard and the 3rd base coach put up the stop sign for Verdugo and the would bring up JD Martinez for a huge at bat with runners on the corners and 2 outs. Chad Green came in from the pen replacing Britton on the mound to face with Martinez who was 1 for 3 on the night. Martinez hit the ball in the hole between 3B and SS and Torres would get to it on the run but his spinning throw to second base was wild and sailed into RF allowing Verdugo to score the tying run while Bogaerts and Martinez would wind up on 2nd & 3rd after the error. The Yankees wanted no part of facing Mitch Moreland with first base open and Green would intentionally walk Moreland to load the bases and set up a showdown with Michael Chavis. The crowd at Yankee Stadium was nervous as they watched the 3 run lead evaporate and Green would start Chavis off with a slider that stayed up and over the plate and Chavis lined it towards the gap left-center and the ball would roll all the way to the wall clearing the bases for a huge RBI double that plated 3 runs as the Red Sox take a 7-4 lead. Tommy Kahnle replaced Green and Christian Vazquez would make it 8-4 with a RBI double. Kevin Pillar was up next and he would drive a ball the opposite way and over the wall in RF for a 2-run HR to make it 10-4. Kahnle would strike Bradley out to finally end the top of the 8th after the Red Sox send 12 men to the plate and explode for 9 runs to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 10-4 lead. The Yankees and their fans were shell shocked after the Red Sox erupted in the top of the 8th and Josh Taylor would sit them down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th to send the game to the 9th inning with Boston leading 10-4. The Red Sox added to their lead in the top of the 9th on a solo HR by Rafael Devers and the Yankees would come up to bat in the bottom of the 9th against Trevor Hildenberger trailing 11-4. Sanchez would go down on strikes to start the top of the 9th before back to back singles by Gardner and Voit and a two run triple by Mike Tauchman made it 11-6. Gio Urshela would drive in Tauchman with a sac fly to RF to make it 11-7 and the Yankees were down to their final out. Hildenberger would get DJ LeMahieu to fly out to Bradley in CF for the final out giving the Red Sox a big 11-7 win

                              * The Red Sox were trailing 4-1 entering the top of the 8th as JA Happ had kept the bats in check through 7 innings. The Red Sox would cut the deficit to 4-3 on a double by Verdugo and Boston would tie the game when Gleyber Torres committed a huge error on a wild throw with 2 outs to keep the inning alive. The error by Torres opened the floodgates as Michael Chavis drove in 3 runs with a bases loaded double and Kevin Pillar hit a 2-run as Boston exploded for 9 runs and sent 12 men to the plate to take a 10-4 lead and would go on to a 11-7 victory

                              * The Red Sox improve to 93-52 while the Yankees fall to 94-50 and the Red Sox are now 1.5 games behind the Yankees for 1st place in the AL East

                              * Collin McHugh pitched decent giving the Red Sox 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 5 Ks

                              * JA Happ pitched a great game thrwoing 7+ innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 2 Ks before Torres made a costly error and the bullpen imploded

                              * Michael Chavis had the biggest hit of the night for Boston when he came up with the bases loaded and snapped a 4-4 tie in the 8th inning with a bases clearing double. Chavis would go 2 for 4 with a double & 3 RBI

                              * Kevin Pillar went 3 for 4 with a double, HR & 2 RBI and is now hitting .286 with 7 HR & 36 RBI

                              * Rafael Devers went 2 for 5 with a HR & 1 RBI and is now hitting .265 with 27 HR & 93 RBI

                              * Gleyber Torres and Luke Voit homered for New York with Torres hitting his 27th HR and Voit slugging his 32nd HR of the season

                              * The Red Sox and Yankees will play the 2nd game of this 3 game series tomorrow with Martin Perez taking the mound for Boston against Jordan Montgomery for New York. It will be interesting to see how the teams respond as Boston can pull within a half game of New York with a win and the Red Sox will be riding high after staging an epic comeback with their most explosive inning of the season where they scored 9 runs in the 8th and the Yankees are coming off such a stunning loss

HIGHLIGHT - Michael Chavis doubled with the bases loaded in the top of the 8th to give the Red Sox the lead during their incredible comeback

                              Game #2 of the series

TNK - Boston Red Sox Franchise
                              Game #146 of Season

Boston Red Sox (93-52) @ New York Yankees (94-50)
Pitching Matchup - Martin Perez vs Jordan Montgomery

The Red Sox and Yankees are set to play the 2nd game of this 3 game series after Boston won the series opener yesterday in dramatic fashion with a 9 run explosion in the 8th inning to pull move within 1.5 games of the Yankees for 1st place in the AL East. The Red Sox can move to within a half game of the Yankees with a win tonight as they send Martin Perez to the mound against Jordan Montgomery for New York

The game was scoreless through 3 innings as Jordan Montgomery and Martin Perez were both pitching well early on. The Yankees would have the first threat in the bottom of the 4th after Aaron Judge drew a walk to put two men on with 1 out but Perez would get Gleyber Torres to ground into an inning ending double play and the game would move to the 5th inning with the score tied 0-0. The game remained scoreless through 5 innings and the Red Sox would threaten in the top of the 6th as Andrew Benintendi singled to lead off the inning and Rafael Devers followed with a double to give Boston had runners on 2nd & 3rd with nobody out. Xander Bogaerts would drive in the games first run as he grounded out to Torres at SS but Benintendi was able to score and give Boston a 1-0 lead. Montgomery would intentionally walk Martinez to get the lefty matchup against Moreland and the move paid off as Moreland would pop up to Sanchez behind the plate for the 2nd out and Chavis flew out to Gardner in CF as Montgomery limits the damage and gets out of the inning with just one run scoring. Perez continued to dominate on the mound as he retired the side in order in the bottom of the 6th and had allowed just two hits as the game would move to the 7th inning with Boston leading 1-0. Jonathan Loaisiga came on to pitch the top of the 7th and gave up back to back singles to Vazquez and Verdugo to start the inning. Kevin Pillar would bunt the runners up into scoring position and Andrew Benintendi would come to the plate with runners on 2nd & 3rd and 1 out. Benintendi would do his job and drive a fly ball to the warning track in LF for a RBI on a sac fly as Vazquez scored making it 2-0 and Verdugo moved up to 3rd base. Loaisiga would get a big strikeout of Devers to end the frame but the Red Sox now had a 2-0 lead. Perez would make quick work of the Yankees in the bottom of the 7th as he retired LeMahieu, Judge and Torres in order to send the game to the 8th inning with Boston leading 2-0. Loaisiga recorded two quick outs to begin the top of the 8th before Mitch Moreland jumped a first pitch changeup that stayed up in the zone and absolutely crushed a 439 foot bomb for his 45th HR of the season to extend the lead to 3-0. Perez returned to the mound to begin the bottom of the 8th and Giancarlo Stanton started the inning off with a line drive in the gap for a lead off double. Gary Sanchez was up next and fouled off some tough pitches with two strikes to stay alive and then hit a high fly ball towards the right field corner on a changeup low and away that carried just over the wall at the 314 foot marker for a 2-run HR and suddenly it was a one run game 3-2 and Perez would exit as Matt Barnes made his way in to take over on the mound. Barnes would come on and slam the door with a dominant appearance as he struck out Mike Tauchman who was pinch hitting for Gardner and then struck out Mike Ford on a nasty splitter for the 2nd out before striking out Gio Urshela to end the inning and send the game to the 9th inning with the Red Sox leading 3-2. Chad Green would pitch the top of the 9th for New York and Verdugo would draw a walk with 1 out and Benintendi would single with 2 outs to put two men on for Rafael Devers with 2 outs as Boston looks to add some insurance. Devers showed good patience to get himself into a hitters count and squared up a 96 mph fastball from Green and drove it 436 feet to CF into Monument Park for a huge 3-run HR to push the Red Sox lead to 6-2. Barnes stayed in the game after such a dominating 8th and with a 4 run lead as the Yankees came to bat in the bottom of the 9th. Barnes would retire Andujar on a ground out for the 1st out before LeMahieu doubled to deep CF bringing up Aaron Judge with 1 out. Barnes would get Judge to pop out to Vazquez in foul ground for a big 2nd out and the Yankees were down to their final out. Gleyber Torres would reach on a single as Bogaerts made a diving stop to knock the ball down but had no chance and decided not to throw the ball bringing up Giancarlo Stanton with runners on the corners and 2 outs. Brandon Workman was ready in the pen should Stanton reach base as Barnes was up to 30 pitches thrown but Barnes would bear down and strike Stanton out on a filthy curveball to end the game and give the Red Sox a 6-2 victory

                              * The Red Sox and Yankees were scoreless after 5 innings before Boston scored runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Yankees got a 2-run HR from Gary Sanchez in the bottom of the 8th to pull within a run at 3-2 but Rafael Devers would connect for a 3-run HR with 2 outs in the top of the 9th to give Boston a 6-2 lead and the Yankees would make a little noise in the bottom of the 9th as they put a pair of runners on base and had the tying run in the on deck circle but Matt Barnes would K Giancarlo Stanton to end the game and the Red Sox win 6-2

                              * The Red Sox have taken the first two games of this series to improve to 94-52 while the Yankees fall to 94-51 and the Yankees now lead the Red Sox by 0.5 games in the AL East standings setting up a huge game 3 tomorrow where whoever wins the game will be in first place.

                              * Martin Perez continues to pitch well down the stretch and make his case to be the Red Sox #4 starter in the post season as he pitched 7 shutout innings before giving up a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th. Perez would finish with 7.0 inning allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 5 Ks to earn the win and move over .500 at 8-7 with a 4.93 ERA

                              * Jordan Montgomery pitched 6 strong innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 1 K and took the loss to fall to 12-8 with a 4.55 ERA

                              * Rafael Devers had the big blow for Boston when he belted a 3-run HR in the top of the 9th to give the Red Sox breathing room as he finished the night 2 for 5 with a double, HR & 3 RBI. Devers is now hitting .267 with 44 doubles, 28 RH & 96 RBI on the season

                              * Mitch Moreland went 1 for 4 with a HR & 1 RBI and is now hitting .308 with 45 HR & 110 RBI

                              * Gary Sanchez provided the offense for New York going 1 for 3 with a HR & 2 RBI. Sanchez is hitting .245 with 30 HR & 74 RBI on the season

                              * Alex Verdugo went 2 for 3 and has a 10 game hitting streak

                              * Matt Barnes pitched the 8th & 9th throwing 2 scoreless innings for Boston to earn his 6th save of the season

                              * The Red Sox have taken the first 2 games of this series to pull within a half game of the Yankees for 1st place which sets up a big showdown tomorrow night as the Red Sox and Yankees will meet for the final time this season in the series finale and the winner of the game will be in 1st place the AL East standings. Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound for Boston against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole tomorrow in what should be a playoff atmosphere and the biggest game of the regular season for both teams

The Red Sox complete the 3 game sweep of the Yankees in a nail biter as JD Martinez hits a go ahead HR in the top of the 9th and Brandon Workman hangs on for the heart attack save

TNK - Boston Red Sox Franchise
                                Game #147 of Season

Boston Red Sox (94-52) @ New York Yankees (94-51)
Pitching Matchup - Nathan Eovaldi vs Gerrit Cole

The Red Sox and Yankees prepare to play the biggest game of the season for both teams with 1st place in the AL East on the line as the Yankees lead the Red Sox by just a half game and whoever wins this final meeting of the season between the two arch rivals with leave be alone in 1st place. The Red Sox will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound the Yankees will have their ace Gerrit Cole on the mound for his biggest start as a Yankee after signing a historic $324 million contract with New York this past off-season

The Red Sox would get off to a quick start as Andrew Benintendi started the game with a single into CF and Rafael Devers would get the barrel of the bat on a 99 mph fastball from Gerrit Cole driving it high and deep to CF for a 2-run HR as Clint Frazier would make a leaping attempt at the wall but it was just out of his reach and the Red Sox would take a 2-0 lead. Cole settled in nicely after the Devers HR just two batters into the game and the score remained 2-0 until Mitch Moreland came up with 2 outs in the top of the 4th launched a solo HR down the RF line for his 46th HR of the season to make it 3-0. Nathan Eovaldi was dealing on the mound for Boston as his stuff was electric and he had 7 strikeouts through 4 innings and we would go to the 5th with Boston leading 3-0. Alex Verdugo walked to lead off the top of the 5th but came up limping after being thrown out trying to steal second base and had to leave the game with an injury. Eovaldi got Gary Sanchez to hit into an inning ending double play to end the bottom of the 5th and had allowed just one hit through 5 innings as we moved to the 6th inning with the Red Sox leading 3-0. The Yankees were threatening with two men on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th but Eovaldi would get LeMahieu to fly out to Benintendi in LF to end the threat and the game would move to the 7th inning with Boston leading 3-0. The Yankees would put two men on with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th and Gary Sanchez would hit fly ball that was hooking deep down the LF line and the ball would ring off the foul pole for a 3-run HR and just like that the Yankees bats come to life and the score was suddenly tied 3-3. Darwinzon Hernandez replaced Eovaldi on the mound and came in and recorded back to back strikeouts of Frazier and Tauchman to end the 7th and send the game to the 8th inning tied 3-3. Luis Cessa would retire the Red Sox in order in the top of the 8th and Hernandez would get the first out in the bottom of the 8th before Urshela punched a 1 out single into RF. Ryan Brasier came in to replace Hernandez on the mound and DJ LeMahieu would slap a slider into RF for a single putting two men on for Giancarlo Stanton. Brasier would get a huge strikeout s Stanton went down swinging at a slider away for the 2nd out and Gleyber Torres would battle his way to a full count before Brasier struck him out on a 98 mph fastball away to get out of the jam and send the game to the 9th inning with the score tied at 3-3. Cessa remained in the game for New York and got Bogaerts to fly out for the 1st out and JD Maritnez would step in with 1 out and launch a solo HR to CF just out of the reach of Frazier to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. Brandon Workman entered the game to pitch the bottom of the 9th to try and close it out for the Red Soxa nd would strikeout Luke Voit to begin the inning before Sanchez singled to CF. Miguel Andujar would pinch hit for Frazier with 1 out and doubled to RF bringing up Mike Tauchman with runners on 2nd & 3rd and 1 out. Workman would buckle down and freeze Tauchman with a fastball on the paint for a huge strikeout for the 2nd out. Tyler Wade would come to the plate with the Yankees down to their final out with the tying run on 3rd base and the potential winning run in scoring position at 2nd base. Wade fell behind in the count and Workman would get Wade to hit the ball on the ground to the left side where Devers would field ti cleanly and throw across the diamond to first base for the final out as Workman hangs on to record the save and the Red Sox hold on for a 4-3 victory to complete the sweep and move into first place in the AL East

                                * The Red Sox and Yankees were tied 3-3 entering the 9th where JD Martinez would hit a go ahead HR in the top of the 9th to give Boston a 4-3 lead. The Yankees had the tying run on 3rd base with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th but Brandon Workman would strikeout Tauchman and get Wade to ground out for the final out as the Red Sox hang on to win 4-3 and complete the 3 game sweep

                                * The Red Sox improve 95-52 while the Yankees fall to 94-52 resulting in the Red Sox taking over 1st place in the AL East by 0.5 games

                                * Nathan Eovaldi pitched 6.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts

                                * Gerrit Cole pitched 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk and 8Ks

                                * JD Martinez went 1 for 4 and snapped a 3-3 tie in the top of the 9th with a solo HR to CF to give the Red Sox the lead. Martinez is now hitting .315 with 38 HR & 128 RBI

                                * Mitch Moreland went 1 for 4 with a solo HR and is now hitting .308 with 46 HR & 111 RBI

                                * Rafael Devers went 1 for 4 and belted a 2-run HR in the 1st inning and he is now hitting .267 with 29 HR & 98 RBI

                                * Gary Sanchez went 3 for 4 with a double, HR & 3 RBI for NY and is now hitting . 249 with 31 HR & 77 RBI

                                * Alex Verdugo extended his hitting streak to 11 games in his first at bat as he doubled in the 2nd inning. Verdugo left the game with a leg injury but will avoid a DL stint and should not miss any time

                                * The Red Sox will return home to Fenway Park where they will begin a 3 game series tomorrow with the Tampa Bay Rays who are 76-69 on the season and need to catch fire over the final 15 games as they are 7 games back in the AL Wild Card race. Chris Sale takes the mound for Boston against Charlie Morton for Tampa Bay in the opener
