Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

    2020 Offseason Summary:

    Major Signings Around the League
(My league's contracts aren't as high as IRL in most cases, sorted from biggest to smallest $):

-Angels sign OF Mookie Bets 8yr/$155M (.258/.329/.465, 29 HR, 81 RB last season, walked from Boston)
-Mets sign 1B Anthony Rizzo 3yr/$44.5M (.277/.380/.508, 33 HR, 90 RBI for the Cubs)
    -Dodgers sign C J.T. Realmuto 3yr/39M (.260/.329/.401, 15 HR, 71 RBI)
-Red Sox sign CP Blake Treinen 3yr/37.2M (38SV, 1.16 WHIP, 1 BS in 49 appearances with Oakland)
-Royals sign SP Taijuan Walker 3yr/$22.2M (Walker had a 1.33WHIP in 199 innings last year)
-Mariners sign SP Aaron Sanchez 3yr/$22.2M (119 IP, 1.28WHIP, 3.55ERA in 21 starts last year)
-Giants sign SP Masahiro Tanaka 1yr/$8.9M (4.00 ERA, 1.29WHIP in 193.2 IP, 31 starts last year)
-Red Sox sign RP Andrew Miller 1yr/8.3M (3.07 ERA, 1.20WHIP in 46 appearances with the Cardinals)
-Nationals sign OF Yoenis Cespedes 1yr/$7.6M (.265/.355/.482, 27 HR, 60 RBI for the Cubs last year)
-Mariners sign RP David Robertson 1yr/$3.7M (definitely a "prove it" year, as he had a 1.50 WHIP in 41.1 IP, with a 4.57 ERA)

    Yankees Offseason Summary

-Signed Adam Eaton to a 1 year, $9M deal.

Eaton and ROTY Kevin Weinstein will compete and possibly platoon for the starting Left Field job as we can now move Stanton into the every day DH role. Eaton hit .272/.360/.395 last year and also had some pop with a career high 15 homeruns, but also struck out a career high 137 times. There were offers in the 12-15 million dollar range, but I think that Eaton signed with us due to our recent success, and having a serious opportunity to win it all this year.

-Signed Brock Holt to a 2 year, $2M deal.

While looking to replace our super utility in Ben Zobrist, we managed to get a poor man's Zobrist for extremely cheap. Spending all of last year in the Red Sox minor league system last year, we have hope that he can have a bounce back year. He will strictly be depth for an infield that is all but set in Andujar, Torress, DJ, and Voit, but more on that later.

-Signed Jake Arrieta to a 1 year, $12.1M deal.

We decided to let Tanaka walk after he declined our QO, and let Happ walk outright. Arrieta is coming off of a year where he threw 203.1 IP in 33 starts, posting an 18-7 record, with a 3.41 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. We were his top offer money wise, as nobody wanted to make Arrieta one of the highest paid pitchers at 35. I'm surprised he did not take a less $ deal for longer years, but at 12.1M he'll be the fourth highest paid guy throwing off the mound this year for us, 4 mil short of Paxton, 1 mil short of Britton, and 5 mil short of our next signing...

-Signed Ken Giles to a 2 year, $34M deal.
Giles will be the heart and soul of our bullpen this year, especially with Chapman being in a contract year. After being traded to the White Sox in 2019, he had a 2.60ERA, 1.17WHIP in 55.1 IP last season, with 22 HLDs, 8 SVs, and 4 BS. Well worth every penny. Unless Chapman has a stellar year, Giles will be in the bullpen this year and slide into that closing spot next season.

After playing through some of the 2021 Spring Training, our opening day roster is going to look like this:

    1. 2B D.J. LeMahieu
    2. 3B Miguel Andujar
    3. RF Aaron Judge
    4. DH Giancarlo Stanton
    5. CF Aaron Hicks
    6. SS Gleyber Torres
    7. C Gary Sanchez
    8. 1B Luke Voit
    9. LF Kevin Weinstein

    Bench:
    UTIL Brock Holt
    OF Adam Eaton
    C Kyle Hihashioka
    1B Greg Bird

    Rotation:
    1. James Paxton
    2. Luis Severino
    3. Jake Arrieta
    4. Jordan Montgomery
    5. Collin McHugh

    Bullpen:
    LRP Domingo German
    RP Chad Green
    RP Nate Jones
    RP Ken Giles
    RP Tommy Kahnle
    RP Zack Britton
    RP Adam Ottavino
    CP Aroldis Chapman

    Thoughts:

Our starting lineup is very right handed heavy (quite literally all right handed batters besides Hicks who can bat from both sides), but our bench is very left handed heavy. I like that we will be able to slide players in and out and move everyone around, as a lot of guys can play a few different positions.

I also think that we are headed into the season with the strongest bullpen in baseball. Montgomery struggled last year, with a 5.37 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 26 games, and German did the same, with a 4.66 ERA, 1.52 WHIP in 30 games. Neither of these guys should get too comfortable this year, because we have a ton of guys waiting for their opportunity, especially Henry Otto, who was drafted in 2019. At just 21 years old, he is currently our number 1 prospect, and ranked #36 in the MILB.

Another concern is that Clint Frazier has informed the club that he would like to be traded upon learning that he will not make the opening day roster. I think that Clint sees the writing on the wall; Kevin Weinstein, our round 1 pick from two years ago, has taken his spot. After winning ROTY last year and becoming the starting Left Fielder for the Yankees, Clint is log jammed.

Frazier hit an abysmal .088 in spring training, and has struggled the past 2 years in limited action. He saw only 6 games in 2019, recording 5 hits in 20 at bats, with a .250/.286/.400 slash. Last season, in 2020, Frazier had already lost the 4th outfielder spot to Weinstein, and in 13 games, he had 6 hits in 39 ABs, with 11 SO. His slash was .154/.244/.179.

I think that both parties agree that Clint needs a change of scenery, which is a shame. We may be able to get a big haul for him though, as his potential ceiling is still high, it just depends on how many clubs know our hands are kind of tied here...

Next up is Opening Day! After that I think I will give bi weekly reports, haven't thought that far ahead yet.

TNK - Boston Red Sox Franchise
American League Division Series Game #2 (Boston leads series 1-0)

Minnesota Twins @ Boston Red Sox
Pitching Matchup - Kenta Maeda vs Eduardo Rodriguez

The Red Sox started quickly in Game 2 as Xander Bogearts got a fastball from Maeda up and over the plate with 1 out in the top of the 1st inning and crushed a 2-run HR to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Andrew Benintendi doubled to lead off the bottom of the 3rd and would come in to score on a RBI single by JD Martinez with 2 outs to give Boston a 3-0 lead. Eduardo Rodriguez was sharp early on the mound for Boston and was through 4 scoreless innings of work and Maeda would get through the bottom of the 4th to send the game to the 5th inning with Boston leading 3-0. Rodriguez and Maeda would pitch scoreless frames in the 5th inning with Maeda recording his 7th K and the game would move to the 6th inning with the Red Sox leading 3-0. Rodriguez retired the side in order in the top of the 6th and Matt Wisler would take over for Maeda to begin the bottom of the 6th and retire the Red Sox in order to send the game to the 7th inning with Boston leading 3-0. Rodriguez kept rolling as he set the Twins down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th and had allowed just 2 hits through 7 innings of work. Wisler worked around a lead off walk to Vazquez to get through the bottom of the 7th sending the game to the 8th inning with the Red Sox leading 3-0. Luis Arraez led off the top of the 8th with a single to LF but Rodriguez would come back to strikeout Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton for 2 big outs and Max Kepler would pop out to Bogaerts ending the inning as Rodriguez has thrown 8 shutout innings. Cody Stashak came on to pitch the bottom of the 8th for Minnesota and retired the side in order to send the game to the 9th inning with Boston leading 3-0. Rodriguez would remain in the game as the Twins came up to bat in the top of the 9th trailing 3-0 and in danger of falling behind 2-0 in the series. Rodriguez began the inning with his 9th strikeout of the night as he got Polanco swinging on a changeup away for the 1st out. Nelson Cruz would work to a full count but Rodriguez would freeze him with a nasty back door cutter for his 10th K of the game and the Twins were down to their final out. Josh Donalson would line the first pitch he saw from Rodriguez down the LF line into the corner but Benintendi would make a strong throw to second base and nail Donaldson trying to stretch it into a double for the final out of the game as Rodriguez goes the distance and the Red Sox win 3-0 to take a 2-0 series lead

      * The Red Sox get a 1st inning HR from Xander Bogaerts and Eduardo Rodriguez hurls a gem to lead the Red Sox to a big 3-0 win in Game #2

      * The Red Sox take a 2-0 series lead and push the Twins to the brink of elimination

      * Eduardo Rodriguez was outstanding for Boston as he throws a complete game shutout pitching 9 innings allowing no runs on 4 hits with 10 Ks

      * Kenta Maeda pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 7 Ks for Minnesota

      * Xander Bogaerts went 1 for 4 with a HR & 2 RBI to lead the offensive attack for Boston

      * JD Martinez went 1 for 3 with a RBI single for Boston

      * Matt Wisler and Cody Stashak combined to pitch 3 hit-less innings of relief for Minnesota

      * Game #3 Starters - Nathan Eovaldi vs Jake Odorizzi - The series shifts to Target Field in Minnesota for Game 3 with the Twins needing a win to stay alive while the Red Sox will be looking to complete the sweep and advance to the ALCS

Cardinals place Michael Wacha on 15 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed RHP Michael Wacha on the 15 day IL due to a pulled hamstring. Wacha injured himself when fielding a ball just the second batter into his outing against the Marlins in Miami.

Since re-joining the rotation, Wacha has been one of the most dependable arms in the rotation and was 9-2 on the year with a WHIP below 1.

Dakota Hudson who came in to relieve Wacha after injury will fill the vacant spot in the rotation.

Adam Cimber has been recalled from Memphis to take Hudson's spot in the bullpen.

Cardinals designate Kolten Wong for assignment

In a move that should surprise no one, the Cardinals have opted to DFA Kolten Wong. Wong has spent his entire career with the Cardinals, but the 36 year old will be moving on as the Cardinals replaced him in the lineup with Yoan Moncada in a trade a few weeks ago.

Wong was content coming off the bench, but the Cardinals aren't content with his production and have guys in the minors that are ready to fulfill the same role that Wong is holding down at the moment.

It's unsure if the Cardinals will trade Wong or grant him an outright release so he can sign with a contending club for a shot at another run in the postseason.

Top outfielding prospect J.J. Bleday will be recalled from Memphis to take the vacant roster spot.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

          Jay's Cub Wrap Up: 2023

North Siders Hook Up with Yanks in New York to start 9 game Road Trip

The Yankee’s have found success in the young season with their revamp lineup. New York said goodbye to Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge as they deemed they were too pricey to keep the sluggers for a team that has missed the playoffs the last 2 years. Taking over at catcher New York has Anthony Sieglerand in right field they have top prospect Jasson Dominguez, Dominguez played in 80 games last year as a 19 year old and already is great in the outfield but his bat still needs refining as he hit .238 last year. The Yankee’s also have youngster Victor Robles who they picked up in a trade with the Nats in the 2021 offseason when they dealt Paul Goldschmit after acquiring him for the 2020 2nd half run.
The cubs had AJ Puk on the mound facing Domingo German. Puk was dealing early as he had 8 strikeouts through the first 4 innings but in the 5 he gave up 2 runs which would be just enough for the Yanks. The Cubs could only add a run in the 7 but came up short losing 2-1. Puk lasted 7 ⅔ innings but the Cubs’ bats fell once again and wasted his effort.

In Game 2 Felix Hernandez took the mound for a spot start and looked to improve on what was a disastrous first time out when he lasted only 4 innings. Hernandez was able to find his form as he went the distance and got the complete game shutout in just 88 pitches. He scattered 6 hits over the 9 innings while striking out 4; he was aided by 5 double plays. Baez homered as a Cubs won 5-0.
In the rubber match Oscar Colas took the mound and the bats again were hot as the Cubs jumped out to the 4-0 lead in the second. Happ contributed with 2 home runs as Colas got his 3rd win in the young season as the Cubs left New York winning 2 of 3. The Cubs have a day off before they start the west coast swing of their road trip with 3 against Dodgers and Giants.

Cubs Head West for showdown with the Dodgers

The Dodgers are in 1st in the West with a record of 10-6 as the Cubs came to town. To start the 3 game stand against Los Angeles the Cubs had Hendricks on the mound. While he gave up 6 hits in 5 innings of work he was able to prevent any runs as he struck out 5. The Cubs were able to get 2 runs in the first but then the bats fell quiet. Carl Edwards was able to get out of a jam in the 8 after he walked 2 before getting 2 strikeouts and a ground out. Emmanuel Clase was able to earn the save as the Cubs won a close one 2-0.

Brailyn Marquez was on the bump next as he looked to keep his hot start going. He was able to do just that as he struck out 6 in 6 innings while only giving up 1 run. The Cubs were added by 3 home runs as Rizzo Colas and Contreras went yard in the 7-1 victory.

The Cubbies went for the sweep with Darvish on the mound. After training runs in the first The Dodgers were able to get their first lead of the series on a solo shot by Matt Beaty in the 4th. Down 3-2 in the 7th The Cubs were able to get 4 runs to make it 6-3. Clase kept his perfect streak going as he came in the save and struck out the side in the 9th.

Cubs Look to End Road Trip on Strong Note against Giants.

The Giants looked to a year away from competing but have a solid core surrounding their big free agent pick up from a year ago when they signed Lindor away from the Indians. Willson Contreras produced all the offense as he had 4 RBI’s and a home run. AJ. Puk went 8 strong innings but the bullpen tried to give the game away late as Wick and Ryan gave up 3 runs in the 8th but the Giants were not able to get any closer as the Cubs won a close one 4-3 to extend their winning streak.

Oscar De La Cruz took the mound in game 2 and had another solid start as he went 5 ⅔ innings The CUbs were aided by homers from Bote and Bryant as they won another close one 3-2.

In the final game Oscar Colas took the mound looking for his 4th win. He went 8 innings and struck out 9 but in the end it wouldn’t be enough as the bullpen struggled again and gave up the lead in the 9th The Game went into extras but the Cubs found themselves in trouble as Wick came in the 12th and proceeded to load the bases. The Giants were able to get the walk off base hit and ended the Cubs 6 game win Streak. The Cubs will travel back to Chicago to face the Cardinals who are sit at 8 and 14 on the year.

Cardinals lose Juan Fabregas for the season

For the second time in as many seasons, the Cardinals were dealt a devastating blow as Juan Fabregas has been lost for the season due to a torn MCL.

Juan Fabregas injured himself running down a fly ball in the left center gap in last night's game against the Marlins in Miami. Fabregas pulled up lame and was removed from the game. Later reports told the terrible news that Fabreagas was done for the 2026 season.

Fabregas who the Cardinals were able to retain in the offseason was hitting .294 with 17 homeruns and 41 RBI's and was a big bat in the Cardinals lineup.

Fabregas suffered a similar injury last year late in the year that upset the Cardinals balance heading into the postseason.

A huge blow to the Cardinals who now must scramble to figure out what they are going to do moving forward. The front office is all but certain scouring the trade landscape looking for a replacement. In the meantime, expect either recent callup J.J Bleday or C.J. McElroy to be inserted into the lineup.

            Huge blow...
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Yankees Miguel Andujar Out 1-2 Weeks

After a 4 game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway we began a 3 game series back at home taking on the White Sox. With Bauer on the mound Andujar would leave in the top of the 1st after attempting to make a diving play at 3B. Luckily it was later found to only be Shoulder Inflammation and will only take him out of action for the next 1-2 weeks.
Andujar has been a big piece this year filling in in most of the games as our lead off man for the injured DJ LeMahieu. He currently owns a line of 310\353\560 with 20 HR’s.

Taking his roster spot for the next 1-2 Weeks will be OF Mike Tauchman instead of another IF. Tauchman has been absolutely raking in AAA over 181 AB’s with a line of 326\427\536, with a OPS of 963 and 9 HR’s.

Next: 2 more games Vs the Sox before the A’s come to town for 4 games.
              News:
              Indians Vs Twins Vs Yankees
In almost the only currently competitive division race in baseball, the Indians and Twins keep fighting it out for the Central. The Twins have mostly controlled the Central all year with Cleveland in pursuit but now they have gained the edge leading over the Twins by 1.5 games. The loser likely welcomes the Jays for a WC Game. But theres also a battle for home field advantage here. We own a 76-36 record with the Indians at 76-38 and the Twins at 75-40.

Game 3 of the ALDS was another thriller as I swept the Twins to advance to the ALCS where it will be Red Sox vs Yankees battling for a trip to the World Series

TNK - Boston Red Sox Franchise
American League Division Series Game #3 (Boston leads series 2-0)

Boston Red Sox @ Minnesota Twins
Pitching Matchup - Nathan Eovaldi vs Jake Odorizzi

The Twins got off to a much needed quick start in the bottom of the 1st as Kepler and Polanco started the game with back to back singles and Josh Donaldson would knock them both in when he drove a ball into the gap for a RBI double to give the Twins a 2-0 lead. Eddie Rosario followed with a RBI double and Minnesota had themselves an early 3-0 lead. Miguel Sano started the bottom of the 2nd with a pop up that was perfectly placed as it dropped into shallow RF on the foul line just out of the reach of the diving Verdugo and Sano would wind up with a lead off double and he would come in to score on a sac fly by Polanco and the Twins had a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Red Sox would get on the board in the top of the 4th when Michael Chavis came through with a RBI double with 2 outs to cut the Twins lead to 4-1. Eovaldi had settled down after the shaky 1st inning and was starting to get locked in when he was forced to leave the game with a foot injury in the bottom of the 4th. Collin McHugh came in to replace Eovaldi and would get through the inning with no runs scoring and we would move to the 5th inning with Minnesota leading 4-1. Odorizzi would strikeout Rafael Devers with a runner in scoring position to end the top of the 5th and Jorge Polanco would lead off the bottom of the 5th with a HR down the RF line off McHugh to make it a 5-1 game after 5 innings. Xander Bogaerts would single to begin the top of the 6th and Mitch Moreland would get into a hitters count with 1 out and he got a fastball over the plate from Odorizzi and hit it high and deep to CF and just out of the reach of Buxton who climbed the CF wall for a 2-run HR to get the Red Sox back in this game cutting the deficit to 5-3. Michael Chavis was up next and he would drive a ball just over the wall in LF for a solo HR as the Red Sox go back to back and cut the Twins lead to 5-4. Odorizzi was rattled and would exit after walking Verdugo with 2 outs as Matt Wisler made his way in from the Twins pen with Jackie Bradley coming up. Wisler would pitch out in a 1 & 1 count thinking Verdugo may be running which put Bradley into a hitters count at the plate and on the next pitch Bradley would get a fastball up in the zone and crushed a 2-run HR to RF for the 3rd Red Sox HR of the inning and suddenly the Red Sox now had a 6-5 lead. The Red Sox kept coming as Benintendi walked and Devers singled to bring up Bogaerts with two men on and 2 outs but he would ground out to Donaldson at 3rd base as the Red Sox sent 10 men to the plate and erupted for 5 runs to take a 6-5 lead. Darwinzon Hernandez took over on the mound for Boston and recorded two quick outs before hanging a curveball to Miguel Sano who hammered a 439 foot bomb to LF for a solo HR to tie the score 6-6. Hernandez would get Buxton to fly out to Verdugo in RF to send the game to the 7th inning with the score tied 6-6. JD Martinez singled off Wisler to lead off the top of the 7th and Tyler Duffey would come in from the pen to replace Wisler on the mound. Duffey and Moreland would battle to a full count and Duffey would try to put a fastball low and away to Moreland but Moreland was on it and drove it opposite field into the second deck in LF for a 2-run HR as the Red Sox come right back to take a 8-6 lead. Hernandez struck out Kepler to begin the bottom of the 7th before Polanco laid down a perfect bunt for a single to bring up Nelson Cruz with a man on and 1 out. Ryan Brasier came in to face Cruz and did his job as Cruz bounced to Bogaerts to start an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to send the game to the 8th inning with Boston leading 8-6. Cody Stashak gave the Twins a much needed 1-2-3 inning as he retired the Red Sox in order in the top of the 8th. Brasier remained in the game to pitch the bottom of the 8th and would pitch around a 1 out double by Rosario as he struck out Garver and got Arraez to ground out to Chavis to end the inning and send the game to the 9th inning with the Red Sox leading 8-6. Zack Littell took over on the mound for Minnesota in the top of the 9th as the Red Sox were looking to add some insurance. JD Martinez singled with 1 out and Moreland would hit a rocket down the RF line just missing his 3rd HR of the game as the ball hoked just foul. Littell would get Moreland to hit into a 4-6-3 double play on the next pitch to end the top of the 9th. The Twins would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th trailing 8-6 with their season on the line as Brandon Workman was coming in to pitch for Boston looking to close it out the series and send the Red Sox to the ALCS. Miguel Sano led off the bottom of the 9th with a routine fly ball to Verdugo in RF for the 1st out. Byron Buxton would line a ball up the middle for a single with 1 out to bring the tying run to the plate for Minnesota. Max Kepler put up a good battle but Workman would get him swinging at a back door cutter for the 2nd out and the Twins were down to their final out. Jorge Polanco would hit a flare into LF for a single to keep the game going for the Twins and bring up Nelson Cruz with two men on and two outs. The Red Sox were one out away from a trip to the ALCS with Minnesota threatening as they had the tying run on base and the potential winning run at the plate but Workman would strikeout Nelson Cruz on a nasty curveball to end the game and send the Red Sox to the American League Championship Series as they hang on to win 8-6 and sweep the ALDS series 3-0 over the Twins

                * The Red Sox trailed 5-1 heading into the 6th inning as the Twins were cruising in front of their home crowd and looking to get back in the series before the Red Sox exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 6th when Moreland and Chavis hit back to back home runs to cut the Twins lead to 5-4 and Jackie Bradley would hit a 2-run HR to give Boston a 6-5 lead. The Twins answered in the bottom of the 6th with a HR from Miguel Sano to tie the game 6-6 but Mitch Moreland would take Tyler Duffey deep for his 2nd HR of the game giving Boston a 8-6 lead in the top of the 7th. Ryan Brasier would bridge the game to the 9th inning where the Twins were threatening against Brandon Workman with two men on and two outs and Nelson Cruz stepping in but Workman would strike Cruz out chasing a filthy curveball away for the final out as the Red Sox win 8-6 and advance to the ALCS

                * The Red Sox sweep the Twins 3-0 to advance to the American League Championship Series

                * Nathan Eovaldi lasted just 3 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits with 5 Ks and left the game with a foot injury but will not require a DL stint and will be available for the ALCS

                * Jake Odorizzi was pitching well before falling apart in the 6th inning as he winds up throwing 5.2 innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 8 Ks

                * Mitch Moreland was the hero for Boston as he got the comeback started with a 2-run HR in the 6th to cut the Twins lead to 5-3 which sparked the big inning and then came up to bat with the score tied in the 7th inning and blasted his 2nd HR of the game into the second deck in LF to give Boston the 8-6 lead. Moreland finished the day 3 for 5 with 2 HR & 4 RBI

                * Micahel Chavis went 3 for 4 with a double, HR & 2 RBI and Chavis had a great series going 6 for 11 with 3 doubles, 2 HR & 5 RBI

                * Jorge Polanco went 4 for 4 with a HR & 2 RBI while Miguel Sano went 2 for 4 with a double, HR & 1 RBI to lead the offensive attack for Minnesota

                * Nelson Cruz struck out for the final out of the Twins season and had a brutal series in the ALDS going 0 for 13 with 5 Ks and hit into 2 double plays

                * The Red Sox advance to the ALCS where they will face the New York Yankees who swept the Houston Astros 3-0 in their ALDS series to advance to the ALCS. The the greatest rivalry in baseball is set to square off in a best of 7 series with a trip to the World Series on the line

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Figured I might start posting my Reds franchise updates here. I'm new to The Show and used my first season to get the hang of the game and sort difficulty levels, etc. out. I then simmed to the end of the 2020 season to somewhat replicate a shortened season and kick things off properly from 2021.

In the shortened 2020 season, the Reds made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the Wild Card round. It was a reasonable finish, and gives the organisation hope that they can further build an already strong roster into a genuine World Series contender.

The Reds' first order of business to this end was a controversial one. They moved on from former MVP and fan favourite Joey Votto, sending him to the Minnesota Twins along with third baseman Reece Hinds in exchange for short stop Jorge Polanco. Votto had another down year, and his sizeable contract was always going to prevent the Reds from adding plus talent during the off-season if it stayed on the books. Instead, they pair him with their highly promising young infielder, and get back a player who will plug a gaping hole at short stop, manned up to this point by an underwhelming but easy to root for Freddie Galvis.

The second move of the off-season was to fortify the pitching staff. Pitching was a strength of the Reds in 2020, and the organisation was determined for that to continue into 2021. After Trevor Bauer's impressive campaign, they handed him an 18.7m qualifying offer, hopeful that he would return but not eager to commit long term money to him. Unfortunately, he was snapped up during free agency. As a result, the Reds turned again to the trade market, swapping Anthony DeSclafani, Josh Van Meter, and a promising outfield prospect for Pirates pitcher Dinelson Lamet. Lamet will slot into the middle of the rotation behind Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray, and ahead of Tyler Mahle and free agent addition Alex Wood (10m/1yr).

To round out the off-season, the Reds added Starling Marte to their outfield, and Jonathan Villar to further reinforce the middle of a now excellent infield. The Reds had their eye on Mookie Betts all year long, but were ultimately priced out of contention as they remain unwilling to commit big money to the books beyond their current limited World Series window. The Reds have a number of talented hitters on the roster already, and were happy to settle for the budget friendly option of Marte. The possibility of pursuing a trade for a superstar talent at the deadline still remains if the circumstances are right.

In a slight positional reshuffle, Mike Moustakas has made the shift over to the now vacant first base, Villar and Polanco will play second and short, and Eugenio Suarez remains at third. Nick Senzel will platoon centre field with Marte, and will also play at second base fairly frequently along with Villar. Shogo Akiyama and Nick Castellanos remain at the outfield corners, and Tucker Barnhart remains the Reds' starting catcher.

The draft was relatively uninspiring outside of two highly promising pitchers. John Park is an 18 year old Korean righty who looks as though he could play in the majors as early as next year. While it is still early days for both players, the future looks bright for the Reds with Park and Hunter Greene as a dangerous one-two punch, with Tyler Mahle and Nick Lodolo also pegged to be part of the future rotation. Closing pitcher Luis Da Silva also looks highly promising, and the Reds hope that he will be ready to take over from Nate Jones as a budget friendly option sooner rather than later. 2B Tyler Callihan, 3B Jonathan India, CF Michael Siani, and CF Jameson Hannah are all players that the Reds hope to see improve in the minors in 2021.

During the course of the off-season, the Reds rose to 5th in the MLB power rankings. Their top 5 pitching staff complements a 1 through 9 batting attack that is arguably the best in the league. After finding themselves outside of the playoff bubble far too frequently of late, the Reds hope to maximise the aging talent that they have on their roster in 2021, and are likely to commit to winning a World Series this year. The farm system, though far from scant, is not exactly brimming with top prospects, so finding a balance between pushing the chips in and protecting the future will be essential if another playoff drought is to be avoided.

                    Cardinals split series with Marlins

The Cardinals and Marlins split their 4 game series to start the final week of June. The Marlins won the first and last games of the series and the Cardinals won the middle pair.

In their pair of losses the Cardinals just couldn't get the bats going although the series finale on Thursday came a day after the Cardinals lost Juan Fabregas for the season due to a torn MCL. The Cardinals were scrambling to get things in order from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon as to what they were going to do going forward. It also didn't help that on Thursday, Funkhouser delivered a clunker going just 5 innings while giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 homeruns. The Cardinals also committed 4 errors in the game.

The Cardinals will leave Miami and head to Boston for a 3 game weekend series with the Red Sox who are in 2nd place of the AL East, 4 games behind the Orioles.

Cardinals claim Kyle Wright off waivers from Braves

The Cardinals have claimed RHP Kyle Wright off of waivers from the Braves. The 30 year old RHP was placed on optional assignment waivers and the Cardinals jumped at the opportunity to sign the 30 year old who they targeted in the offseason. For now, Wright will go to Memphis to get stretched out as he will join the rotation there. He pitched out of the bullpen with the Braves.

Wright adds depth to a starting pitching staff that is starting to lose depth due to age and a few roster moves.

Cardinals acquire Christian Yelich from the Yankees

The Cardinals have made their 2nd trade in the month of June as they struck a deal with the Yankees for the services of OF Christian Yelich. The Yankees will get a pair of prospects as well as Daniel Ponce De Leon in return.

                    Cardinals get:

                    OF - Christian Yelich

                    Yankees get:

SP - Daniel Ponce De Leon
                    IF - Bryce Denton
                    OF - Sammy Siani

The Cardinals didn't waste time in replacing the injured Juan Fabregas who was lost for the year on Wednesday due to a torn MCL. The Cardinals were interested in a few different players, but when the Yankees offered up Christian Yelich, the Cardinals jumped at the opportunity as the asking price wasn't near as steep as their other considerations.

One reason Yelich's return was lighter than expected is the Yankees had just completed a deal with the Indians acquiring former Cardinal Jo Adell who moved into the everyday right field duties displacing Yelich to DH. Yelich was then listed day to day with a bruised hand and replaced in the lineup.

Yelich was hitting just .257 with 2 homeruns and 15 RBI's in 140 at-bats this season with the Yankees.

The Yankees are getting Daniel Ponce de Leon who they will add to their 26 man roster and provide depth in the bullpen that is being decimated by injuries. Ponce de Leon continually found himself over looked or replaced by other arms with the Cardinals and was never really going to get a shot at pitching at the majors unless several injuries occurred.

Bryce Denton is a guy the Cardinals liked but with the acquisition of Yoan Moncada and already having Tommy Edman and Devin Mann as back infielders/second basemen, Denton was fairly blocked at reaching the majors with the Cardinals. The Yankees will keep him at Scranton this year in all likelihood as they are out of contention for the East and likely playoffs, but they are building a decent young core to make a go next year. Injuries have to the pitching staff has really hampered this club.

Sammy Siani is a highly touted prospect in the Cardinals organization and they really didn't want to part with him, but in order to get the deal done, they had too. Siani is just 21 years of age and the ceiling is extremely high with him. His bat needs to improve as does his arm, but his speed and defensive abilities will give him all the opportunities he can get to reach the majors sometime in the very immediate future. The Yankees have sent him to Trenton (AA) to be the starting centerfielder there.

How this trade will pan out for both clubs remains to be seen and its likely going to be a season or two before we really know how well this trade worked out for the Yankees, but I don't see how they can really lose. Yelich wasn't a long term answer after the acquisition of Jo Adell and just getting Siani would've probably been a fair enough trade when everything shakes out, but you have to "pay more" for an all-star caliber player.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I'm guessing you're getting an aging Yelich at this point in your franchise? Is he still a highly rated speed/power guy? What's left on his contract?

He's 34. His speed is above average and has decent power still. Good contact hitter.

He signed a one year deal with the Yankees in the offseason for $9MM
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

questions for guys who have Mookie Betts on their team: do you move him to centerfield because of his fast speed, quick reaction and fielding ability or keep him rightfield for his cannon arm? is he more valuable as a CF'er or a RF'er?

EDIT: I was originally looking at his speed from a 19 roster. looks like his speed dropped to low 60's in 20. still fast enough to man center?

The Cubs came out with the bats swinging in game 1. Cedrick Holland had been great for the Twins in the postseason thus far, but that all fell apart in the 1st game of the World Series when the Cubs quickly put up a 2 spot in the 1st inning with a Juan Soto RBI single, and a Gary Scruggs sac fly.

The Cubs added another in inning 2 when Alan Quick added a sac fly of his own scoring Kyle Schwarber to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead after 2. That lead would extend further when the Cubs put together a massive 4 spot in inning 3 and pushing Holland out of the game thanks to another Juan Soto solo HR, and Alan Quick hit a bases clearing double to make the game 7-0.

The Twins finally got on the board in the 5th with a solo hr from 3B Matt Chapman, and that was all for Jose Berrios who was taken out early with only 60 pitches in hopes he can come back earlier in the series than anticipated.

The Cubs bullpen scurried a bit, and the Twins did get the game to 7-5, but it was never really close as the Cubs held on and won in dominating fashion.
Cubs win 7-5, and take a 1-0 series lead.

                            Game 2: Julio Urias (3GS, 19.2IP, 1-0, 1.83ERA) VS Jaime Barria (3GS, 18IP, 3-0, 0.50ERA)

The Cubs again got the bats going early again in this one with a Juan Soto 2R HR in the 1st inning, that is his 7th HR of the postseason. The Twins made sure to answer the Cubs with 2 runs in the 2nd courtesy of back to back doubles by 3B Matt Chapman and Ronald Guzman who ended the game 3-4 with 2 2B and 2RBI.

Julio Urias was able to go through 6 innings, giving up only 1 more run in the 4th with one of the Guzman doubles. Urias has been stable in the postseason, and continues that with another solid performance on the bump going 6IP, 3ER, 2K’s. While the Twins Jaime Barria who has been outstanding this postseason gave up 5ER in 3.2IP and 9hits. 2 of those runs came in the 3rd when Juan Soto tripled which scored Tim Anderson, and Baez drove him home with a single.

They Cubs kept the train going all game long, scoring 8 runs off 15 hits, and the Twins were stuck at 4 runs through 11 hits. The Cubs win game 2 and have an early 2-0 series lead on the road. The series heads to Wrigley.

                            Game 3: Jose Serrano (2GS, 16IP, 2-0, 1.13ERA) VS Randy Dobnak (2GS, 10.2IP, 0-1, 3.38ERA)

The Cubs train keeps rolling. They have continued to dominate the World Series and are now 1 win away from a 3rd World Series since 2021. The Cubs had young 22 year old Jose Serrano on the mound and he delivered yet again this postseason. He is now 3-0, 2.05ERA in 3 starts. The young phenom is proving his worth in the playoff rotation.

The Cubs YET again scored runs in the 1st with another HR from Soto, a 2 run shot that is now Soto’s 8th HR of the postseason as he continues to lead the offense.. The Cubs jumped to a 5-0 lead after 3 when in the 3rd when Cubs 3B Miguel Sano roped a 3R HR that gave the Cubs a big lead, and they held it the rest of the game.

The Cubs have a chance now to win the series at Wrigley and would take a monumental comeback to stop this underdog Cubs team from winning another World Series.

                            Game 4: Jose Berrios (3GS, 17.1IP, 0-1, 5.19ERA) VS Cedrick Holland (4GS, 27.1IP, 1-1, 2.63ERA)

A rematch of game 1 was on tap for this game, and it was a much different type of game than it was the 1st time around, as both pitchers threw really good games this time.

The first run of the game came from former Cub Ian Happ who scored off a fielders choice ground ball to give the Twins an early 1-0 lead. Holland was terrific in this start, and did not give up a run through 7 innings. Holland entered the 8th with the same 1-0 lead and did finally give up a run that tied the game up late thanks to a Kyle Schwarber solo HR that tied it going into the 9th.

Cubs RP Ray Del Villar who had yet to give up a run in 9IP so far in the postseason was hit up bad in the 9th, giving up his first 2 runs of the postseason and again letting the Twins takeover the lead late in the game. These runs again came courtesy of Ian Happ who hit a 2R HR, and was only a single away from the cycle.

The Cubs were down to their last outs in the bottom of the 9th, Cubs fans were hoping to see a World Series clincher at Wrigley, and the crowd was not giving up on their team. With 2 outs, and 1 on Cubs slugger Miguel Sano came to the plate and crushed an opposite field blast to the bleachers, igniting the crowd in craziness and tying up the game sending this World Series game to extras. A place the Cubs have been before in a world series.
Clyde Booker pitched a clean 10th for the Cubs, and it was the Cubs turn for possible history.

Kyle Schwarber steps up to the plate, 1 out and nobody on. 5th pitch of the AB he yet AGAIN crushed a ball to DEEP right field and the baseball world has yet again crowned the Cubs as the World Series champion. This moment could not have been anymore poetic, as Kyle Schwarber is one of 2 members (Baez) still left over from the 2016 season. Schwarber who had a horrid regular season and is on the last year of his contract, it has been well known that this is likely his last year in Chicago. What a way to end a legendary fan favorite career.

Cubs win 4-3, and win the world series with a sweep of the Twins 4-0.

                            Thoughts:

The Cubs have won a 3rd world series in 7 years, and although they have missed the playoffs a few times in that span they continuously get it done when it matters most. They only won 86 games this year and never felt a true contender with MIL in the division, but they persevered and had big performances when needed most. The Cubs are yet again atop the MLB as champions and will look to continue winning world series’ and consistently making the playoffs.

Longtime Cubs Kyle Schwarber is set to hit free agency, along with longtime utility man Gary Scruggs, and midseason acquisition Tim Anderson who was fantastic for the Cubs. The Cubs will also lose SP Jacob DeGrom who was solid as the 5th man in the rotation, but he will be 38 entering next season and does not look to be apart of the Cubs future.

Will the Cubs reload? Extend the up and coming young stars? Who knows.

                            SP Jacob DeGrom
                            RP Rowan Wick

                            Notable Signings:
                            Re-Signed SS Tim Anderson 2YR/30M
                            Signed 3B Nolan Arenado 1 YR/10M
Traded 2B Wilmer Flores to WSH for RP Nick Wittgren

                            Thoughts:

The Cubs loved what Tim Anderson brought to the table when they acquired him from the South Side last year, and despite him being 33 entering the 2027 season, he is looking as good as ever, and the Cubs resigned him to a 2 year deal. This likely continues to push 2B/SS Alan Quick to a utility role, one
he is not so used to after being the starter since 2022.

The Cubs also signed 3B Nolan Arenado to a 1 yr deal. After 14 years in COL the 35 year old star will go to Chicago in hopes of getting a championship before he hangs up his cleats. This will push Miguel Sano to 1B in a contract year, and also move 1B Devin Jackson to a more utility role, in the same vein that Gary Scruggs was the last few seasons. Jackson has been the starter the last 3 seasons, and has performed well, but the addition of a veteran in Arenado was to much to pass up.

With the loss of longtime starter and Cubs legend Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs will likely promote top prospect Jonny Benson to the MLB roster. The 2025 first round pick will look to take over starting backstop duties with Anthony Williams remaining on as backup.

The Cubs made a trade to bolster the bullpen, but other than that the bullpen will remain identical to last year.

The rotation did lose Jacob DeGrom, and it will again be left up to Francis Easley or Bernard Nowak to take the reigns in spring to land the 5th starter spot.

This is my franchise history so far in MLB20 the show. I know I fly through seasons quicker than others. Figured I would catch some people up in case they missed stuff. I play about 40ish regular seasons games a season and all the playoff games. Love this thread. Keep it up guys!
