Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
Ok, and put me in the "bat sounds terrible" camp as well. A homerun sounds like a blooper, everything sounds the same no matter the contact it seems. Awful as that's something they had pretty good last year. Expect it to be patched tbh as I've no idea why they changed it in the first placeComment

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
The on-field gameplay is soooooo damn good this year. It's so nice being able to properly play a ball off the wall or at the very least pick the dang ball up should you misplay it.
The animation changes/additions really help the on field gameplay flow more smoothly. I really don't know how else to say it other than it feels more natural.
Playing a full 162 games in franchise, the gameplay has to reign supreme and once again SDS has accomplished that, at least for me it has. I've had games that were homerun derby, pitchers duels, and other games where the offensive was king, but it was all done via "small ball".
Very happy that I chose to move on from my carryover save and start anew with '21I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
I don’t usually post, but this game (PS5 version) has frustrated me enough to do so. There is nothing WRONG with the game really. It’s just meh. Almost untouched minus menu set up and stadium builder. Graphically, mode, and on field, it’s the same game for 5 years it seems. A few new face scans and new soundtrack. And it’s not just The Show, but all sports games this new generation. What happened to innovation? What happened to graphical improvement? What happened to aiming for the solo franchise player? If I wanted to card collect, I would collect physical cards or buy NFT’s.
I guess SDS has just been the most disappointing to me because the guys used to always be up here taking suggestions and responding to feedback, and I just feel they have gone the EA route the last few years. I don’t know if my expectations were too high, but I expected more from The Show.Comment

I use it mostly... after a handful of games to see the presentations. But after that I just want to play and finish games as fast as possible.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
So I have both the PS5 and Series X versions, and I have noticed that the PS5 version plays alot smoother. Framerate on the Series X dips alot during hits down the line and quite a bit during cut scenes. Anybody else notice that too? Hopefully that is something that can be patched for Xbox in the near future.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
Very first impressions are that this game is pretty offensive to the senses. Straight away you're hit with a ton of pretty unhelpful menus and options, which look like something out of a default created website, all while being bombarded with loud obnoxious music. Even in game the music constantly breaks in as well, while the menu navigation is pretty awful. I'm sure I'll get used to it and also turn off all the music, but it's probably the ugliest UI I can recall the SHow having, while the music seems even more in your face than normal?Comment

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
Now that I've got almost a full week of playing here is my final impressions:
-Graphically the game looks beautiful. There are some minor lighting issues that I'm sure will be patched. For example Texas. Somethings going on there and its not just a "too dark" issue. There is a weird splotch between the pitcher and batter while pitching that comes and goes after you select the pitch. Also if you have the opening week graphics by the sideline in that stadium they are not lighting correctly. The white lettering is almost black. I noticed a similar issue with jersey logos in the create uniform screen, when you select "shiny".
-Diamiond Dynasty. Never really been into it but out of any card collecting modes in sports games, I get the appeal of it. I messed around a bit and with the faster load times its kinda fun. Could see myself messing with it a bit this year.
RTTS. I like the direction its going. The load outs and perks are a cool feature but I'm still trying to figure it out. It seems like I have to activate each loadout if I am pitching vs being a hitter. If I just switch loadouts my guy is OK at one but terrible at the other. If I activate I can be good at both. I'm sure I'm just not understanding something but its convoluted. Also the grind is real. I have only ever gotten very deep into RTTS once and that was years ago. I just struggle with the long grind only to have to start over again. If they don't fix or tweak progression it will take forever to get any good. I will say tgat the addition of pin point pitching and being a two way player has brought a lot of life to this mode. I actually prefer pitching now with pin point so the repetition of RTTS is alleviated. I can see myself spending a lot of time with RTTS this year.
-Franchise. My main mode. It is what it is. Its functional and has always been good, its just stale and needs some love. When the gameplay is as good as it is, franchise in its current state is acceptable to me.
-March to October. Gotta be honest, with every thing there is to do, I kinda forgot this existed lol. Don't see myself spending any time with this mode.
- No SOTS. SOTS would put this game over the top. I built the packs here on OS for a number of years so you can imagine how much of a bummer it is custom SOTS is gone. tgat being said they did do a good job of ambient sounds and the actual walk-up and in between innings music all feels appropriate and they nailed the reverb this year.
-Year to year saves. I never really used it. I always prefer having scans over CAPS and that was a huge hurdle for me in Y2Y. That being said, it would be crushing to have it gone if I was deeply time committed to a franchise. It might honestly even be a deal breaker. Hopefully it returns soon.
-Dual Sense controller. Here is the brilliance of the Dual Sense, if you are thinking about it, its kinda "thats it?" but in reality its just quietly adding subtleties and immersion, kind of like ambient noise you don't really notice. Thats what I like about it. The pop of the catchers mit. The heartbeat under pressure. Sliding. It all translates really well with the dual sense and in a non aware subtle way. None of it is better than the perfect perfect hit. I love how they play out with the Dual Sense.
Bat sounds. The more I play the more I like. When I think back to last year, they were kind of over the top. I think this years are more in line with what I hear on TV or when I'm at a game. Some situations could probably use tweaking though.
Announcers: Not great. I'm sure there were challenges with covid. Announcers sound really disjointed, tingy at times, different volumes. Lines are repetitive. not enough color commentating. Baseball is long and drawn out. We need NBA 2K type commentating please. Talk about the league, new rules, old rules, events tgat have happened, player stories. Its serviceable but in all honesty its pretty bad when you think about it.
- Pitching. Pin point more specifically. Simply this is my favorite thing ever added. I didn't think it could get better than the 2K mechanic but they improved on it in every way and so smartly too. The timing part is amazing and makes sense. Then going to the top to aim and finally nailing the release with a timing circle is brilliant. Having it all make sense and play out in meaningful ways if you miss is so important and they nailed it. In years past, if I missed the spot on the meter, it felt fairly random where I would miss. More often then not it was a meat ball and user walks were virtually non existent. I love being able to fire curves into the dirt with better accuracy and purpose, watching a batter flail and strike out.
-Fielding. The drift track or whatever its called, also is extremely well done and adds depth to the usual routine fielding. The only thing I wish is they would give methe ability to turn off the yellow ball trail as it would add another layer of difficulty. Fielding in general though is smooth and well done. Feels the best its been.
-Hitting.
Subtle changes here. I play zone analog with stride from broadcast cam. It seems much more difficult to get contact unless you line up the pci which is a much welcomed challenge. I hated in the past making consistent contact on balls you were not even close on. Also the timing window seems smaller which adds challenge. Not a homerun fest this year and I like hitting being harder. I love broadcast cam as I am a clean screen as close to what I see on TV kinda guy. I would love for them to add an option to turn off the pitcher grip like when you play online. I try really hard not to look but sometimes my eyes wander and I catch a look at whats coming.
I just played the game 3 days straight, like not even stopping for anything but to eat and sleep(my wife is an angel). This is not only the best baseball game I've ever played, I think this is my favorite sports game ever played. It has some issues for sure but nothing that grossly takes away from a stellar experience. Like the rest of us, I'm sick of this pandemic and sick of being stuck at home. This game couldn't have come a long at a better time. So much fun.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
This is for Xbox one X: I played from 08-19. I skipped last year because it became stale to me and I didn't see enough improvements. Got it this year on gamepass. The first thing I noticed is the dirt looks way better than it used to. The ball off the bat when you square up the ball sounds much better as well. Online on xbox the games are way smoother than they used to be on ps4. No more crazy slow pitches and pauses between hitting the ball. The sky during night games is so much better than it used to be as well. The progression of daylight to night looks fantastic. The field seems to play much bigger and deeper which I have been wanting forever.
They really need a new commentary guy. I can't stand listening to Matty V for the past 14 years. I just turned him off this year. It's time for a change. Guy is way too robotic and stale. The soundtrack other than a couple songs is terrible. Sports games used to have amazing soundtracks, now most of them are horrendous garbage. Frame rate can be a bit choppy during foul balls and cutscenes, but gameplay is pretty smooth. Anyways, most of the issues I mentioned are easy fixes. Turn off commentary and make your own on the fly, and turn off soundtrack and put on spotify. Other than that, it's a fantastic version this year. Very pleased. So happy it came to gamepass or I probably wouldn't have bought it until it dropped to $20.Last edited by caseyj622; 04-20-2021, 02:31 PM.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
I know you have an CX OLED as well. Bro, put your Xbox on 120fps mode and this game and you’ll have lower input lag than most monitors. It’s crazy how I’m having to get used to it on the series x. I’m almost never late on fastballs and swinging early on off speeds.

On the series x? I’m only noticing the drops in cutscenes but not during gameplay.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
Yea, you can tell the PS5 version runs smoother than the Series X in certain areas. Even with small things like when a guy is walking up to the plate and his name and stats will flash on the screen, it's a little choppy on Series X whereas on PS5 it's smooth. I haven't noticed a difference really during actual gameplay though. And I tested some of the parks that look really dark on both consoles, and the problem persists on both.
Yea this I agree with. I noticed some of the stats they show on screen gets choppy sometimes but the gameplay been smooth.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread
So I just went back and played a game of '20 just to get a comparison of the two. And sure, on the surface, '21 doesn't seem like much of a leap forward. But after playing a game on '20, I will never play it again. This year just looks and plays a ton better than last year. Sure, some people will say they see no difference. But I certainly do. The more I play '21, the more I see the graphical differences. Yes they can be subtle, but they are there. And don't get me started on gameplay. It is leaps and bounds better than last year. I even like the menus this year, which are an eyesore to some. This has been the best this game has ever played.
