Cardinals bounce back, take series from Dodgers

The Cardinals (39-23) bounced back from their recent struggles to take 2 of 3 from the Dodgers in Los Angeles to begin the week.

The Cardinals have finally won their first series in June as they find themselves in a dogfight with the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cards currently hold a 1/2 game lead.

Levi Prater got things started Monday night going 7 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts. Tyler Webb and Roberto Osuna were able to close out the game with the Cards winning 3-1. Tyler O'Neill's 3 run bomb in the 4th inning off of Tony Gonsolin would be the only offense the Cards would need.

Jack Flaherty got the ball Tuesday night against David Price and Flaherty and Price were both filthy. Flaherty would record his 8th win after pitching 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 11. David Price would get the loss despite pitching 7 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and striking out 12. Paul Goldschmidt's 2 run homerun in the top of the 8th would chase Price and secure the victory. Alex Reyes saved his 21st consecutive game, striking out the side (Betts, Seager, Bellinger) in the 9th.

Carlos Martinez got the ball Wednesday afternoon chasing the sweep, but Martinez wouldn't get out of the 4th inning. He was chased after 3 1/3 innings giving up 7 runs on 6 hits and walking 4. He didn't record a single strikeout and was tagged for 3 homeruns and 2 doubles on the 6 hits. John Gant would again rescue the bullpen going 4 innings to keep the pen from being taxed. Walker Buehler pitched a complete game against the Cards allowing just one run on 5 hits and striking out 7. The lone run was a RBI double by Carlson in the 4th.

The Cards are off on Thursday as they head home for a 3 game weekend series with the Pirates.

I've spent the last hour or so using the trade suggester to see what I can get for Alex Jackson, Bryse Wilson, etc., for when I hit deadline week in my franchise.

ROYALS FACE OFF IN BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

Game one:
WP: J. Merriweather (4-2)
LP: L. Hendriks (1-3)

The White Sox come in to the matchup winners in eight straight, and before the big showdown with the Royals, trainers were worried about a shin contusion suffered by Jorge Soler in pregame. He was scratched from the lineup and is day to day.

Tim Anderson and Adam Eaton both doubled to lead off the first, and the White Sox were up with the threat of more runs. A wild pitch sent Eaton to third. Eloy Jimenez hit a sac fly to make it 2-0 Sox. Brady Singer would get a double play ball to finally end the top of the first.

Andrew Benintendi kicked off the scoring for the Royals, hitting a sac fly in the third to cut it to 2-1. With one of in the fourth, Hunter Dozier tripled, tingling Mondesi a golden opportunity to tie the game. Instead, he popped up to the first baseman, leaving it up to Ryan McBroom. McBroom hit a laser to the third baseman, but Moncada handled it easily and retired the side.

Michael Taylor would lead the fifth off with a single to CF that Luis Robert couldn’t handle cleanly, which allowed Taylor to make it to second on the error. Viloria would come up and come through with a game tying single.

Singer would run into trouble in the sixth and give up a pair of runs while the Royals got Barlow ready, then Barlow let an inherited run score. It was 5-2 Sox in the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the 8th and one out, Benintendi would single, followed by Santana and Joc Pederson walks to load the bases for Hunter Dozier. He would the ball hard to RF but Eaton made a nice play to hold it to a sac fly. Mondesi would fly out to send the game to the 9th with the Sox leading 5-3.

McBroom would lead the bottom of the ninth off against Liam Hendriks with a walk and was replaced by Jarrod Dyson, who stole second. Taylor flew out to right and Dyson advanced to third. Viloria for hit by a pitch and was injured on the play. Cam Gallagher brook first and Whit Merrifield came to the play representing the winning run.

Hendriks threw a looping curveball and Whit crushed it into the bullpen in left field for the three run walk off HR. The Royals at least for a day move into sole possession of first and end the White Sox winning streak.

Meibrys Viloria strained his bicep and is day to day.

Game two:
WP: K. Zimmer (4-0)
LP: L. Lynn (10-4)


The White Sox had a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but the Royals got a Cam Gallagher walk, single from Merrifield, Benintendi reahing via error, and a Pederson walk to score a run. With the bases loaded and one out, Hunter Dozier hit a grand slam off of a Lance Lynn to put the Royals up 5-4.

The Royals would add another pair against the big righty in the fourth with four straight singles. With runners at the corners and no outs for Santana singled in a run and the Royals till had runners at the corners for Joc Pederson. A sac added a run and Taylor singled in another two. They would add in more just for fun on a Cam Gallagher RBI single and take the 12-4 lead after 12 unanswered runs.

The White Sox would sprinkle in a few runs over the last five innings, but the Royals win 13-8.

Game three:
WP: J. Staumont (3-3)
LP: C. Heuer (2-4)

Kris Bubic really struggled, allowing six runs in just four innings, but the offense picked him up early, highlighted by a three run HR from Hanser Alberto, just his second of the year.

The game was tied at six in the bottom of the sixth when Jarrod Dyson lead off with a single, who would steal second. With two outs, Alberto would walk, setting the plate for Salvador Perez, who would come up with a big RBI single, giving the Royals the 7-6 lead.

Mondesi would follow with a bases loaded single that scored one, but Salvy was thrown out at the plate. The Royals take a two run lead into the 9th.

Josh Staumont would give up a single and a walk before Tim Anderson doubled to tie the game at 8-8. He would get through the inning after that but his inconsistent season has struck again. After the Royals couldn’t score in the ninth, Staumont pitched the tenth and this time retired the Sox easily in order.

Cam Gallagher would lay down a bunt in the bottom of the tenth, advancing Dyson to third. Whit Merrifield now had a golden opportunity to walk off the White Sox in back to back games.

On a 1-1 count, Merrifield got a slider up and hit it deep enough to walk off the White Sox for back to back nights and extend the division lead to three games.

*the Boston Red Sox remain the most aggressive team at the trade deadline, now dealing a handful of prospects including 2B Brett Netzer (23 yr, 69 ovr, B pot) to Oakland for SP Chris Bassett.

Game four:
WP: D. Cease (4-8)
LP: J. Merriweather (4-3)
S: L. Hendriks (29)

Danny Duffy and Dylan Cease both pitched six innings, allowing four runs each. It was a tie game until Mikie Mahtuk hit a two run HR off of Julian Merriweather in the eight.

This time there was no late inning heroics and the Royals fall 6-4. The record is 59-43.

ROYALS DROP 2 OF 3 IN TORONTO

Game one:
WP: H. Ryu (12-1)
LP: M. Minor (6-6)
S: T. Mayza (2)

George Springer would hit a solo HR off of Mike Minor in the bottom for the first, but a Michael Taylor sac fly in the second would tie the game at 1.

Vlad Guerrero would add three more runs on one swing in the fourth, blasting a HR to deep CF.

Asa Lacy would enter the game in the seventh, but throw just three pitches before an injury caused him to leave the game.

Down 4-1 in the top of the 8th, the Royals loaded the bases and finally forced the Blue Jays to go to the bullpen. Rafael Dolis would enter to face Alaberto Mondesi with two outs.

Mondesi would single in a pair of runs, cutting the deficit to just one. Mondesi would then swipe second and Royals needed just a base hit to take the lead. Joc Pederson would pinch hit for McBroom, but would fly out to RF a few steps in front of the warning track.

Kyle Zimmer would enter the game and had no control. He walked the bases loaded, and when replaced by Barlow, the Blue Jays got a bases clearing double to effectively end the game. The Jays won 7-3 and Hyun-Jin Ryu moves to 12-1 on the season.

*Asa Lacy’s MRI showed some structural damage so he will be headed for arthroscopic knee surgery and will be forced to go to the 60 day IL. Nicky Lopez has been recalled to the Royals.

Game two:
WP: Brady Singer (8-6)
LP: R. Stripling (6-8)

The Royals got a pair of HRs from Salvy and Santana and RBIs from half the lineup. They put up 11 runs and won easily, as Brady Singer allowed just three hits and one walk in a complete game shutout masterpiece.

Game three:
WP: R. Ray (10-7)
LP: B. Keller (6-6)

The Royals pieces together a makeshift lineup against Patrick Murphy, with several key starters needing a day off.

Brad Keller was ok in this start, allowing just a pair of run in the first four innings. The Royals offense started slow though, but in the top of the fifth loaded the bases for Whit Merrifield with no outs.

Unfortunately Robbie Ray would get the double play, and only one run would score.

The Jays would add another couple runs in the mid innings, but the Royals would not.

The Royals are 60-45, just 1 game ahead of the White Sox. The White Sox are currently holding the second WC spot, 3.5 games ahead of the Twins and Angels.

The Royals will go on the road for three against the White Sox and three against the cross state Cardinals.

Start of Season - 2024

Can anyone spare some change? Quite an interesting offseason with quite a lot of money being spent. After falling short in the Wild Card game we had quite a few players who ended up being free agents. The biggest of course was Shohei Ohtani. Our first offer was for 211 million dollars over 7 years hoping he would take a tiny little discount. He did not. We upped it to the full 217 million over 7 years and he still wasn't on board. So on the first day of free agency, we moved to 248 million over 8 years with a mutual option on the final season which he ended up accepting.

Mondesi was next and it was definitely the hardest decision. Career OPS of .670 but was a lot better in the 2nd half of last season when Bobby Witt Jr got hurt. Decided to bring him back for at least 1 more year giving him a 2 year 30 million dollar with a mutual option. He will make 13.9 million the first season and 16.1 next season should things work out.

Alex Reyes was a surprise free agent because I'm a moron. He was brought in as a free agent last season and put up a 3.23 ERA in 61.1 IP. We banked on the fact that 2023 was closer to the real him than the 2021 version where he put up a 4.79 ERA in 77 IP. He returns on a 4-year deal worth 33 million.

On the first day of the off-season, we picked up options for Whit Merrifield and Danny Duffy. But they both along with Hanser Alberto, and Michael Taylor declined options on their end making them free agents as well. We ended up bringing 3 of the 4 back with Michael Taylor being left out. All 3 got 2 year deals with mutual options for next season. Duffy gets 12.4 million in the first year and 10.6 next season. Whit gets 9.3 million with 10.8 next season and Alberto gets 6 million with 7 million possible next year.

Brad Keller is where things took an unexpected turn. The original plan was to just let him walk. He had been good at putting up an ERA of 3.56, 3.13, and 1.32 his last 3 seasons but with Ohtani getting all the money he wants we had to make a choice. I figured with Ohtani, Duffy, Brady Singer and Zach Davies already set we could find 2 more guys to fill out our 6 man rotation. We put the qualifying offer on him just so we could get a little something in return and then he turned around and decided to accept it.

So with Keller now making 19.9 million, we had to trade. We needed a bat after letting Nick Castellanos walk so we turned to the Tamp Bay Rays. Making a deal to acquire SS Willy Adames and in return, we sent them Zach Davies, 24-year-old CF Juan Carlos Negret, 25-year-old SS Brady McConnell RP Gregory Soto. Adames is set to be a free agent after this season and hit .267/.321/.508 with 30 HR in 2023.

With Adames joining Mondesi and Witt in the infield we decided to slide him over to 3B, with Bobby Witt taking over at 2nd which means Merrifield moves over into the outfield. With 1B and DH also locked up that left Hunter Dozier without a spot. So he was next on the trade block. We ended up finding a partner with the A's after they lost Matt Chapman to the Twins in free agency. We sent them Hunter Dozier and 21-year old OF Noah Wyatt in exchange for RF Stephen Piscotty. Despite hitting .290/.372/.457 with 16 HR last season they were clearly looking to replace him by bringing in Yasiel Puig in FA.

The last significant move we made in the offseason was extending Brady Singer. After putting up a 2.83 ERA we signed him to a 3-year deal worth 32 million buying out his first year of free agency.

Free Agent Signings

Heading into spring there were 6 spots on the team that were yet to be decided. Fairly big battle for the 2 spots in the rotation with Asa Lacy and Jonathan Bowlan beating out Joe Slater, Tim Nobless, and Carlos Hernandez. Bowlan put up a 3.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 3.74 FIP in 23 IP. Lacy had a 3.52 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 4.09 FIP in 23 IP. He was also out of options which made the decision to send Joe Slater down easier. Slater had a 3.54 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 4.03 FIP in 20.1 IP. Nobless got sent down after 2 starts putting up a 9.39 ERA in 7.2 IP while Hernandez made 3 starts and put up a 7.36 ERA in 11 IP.

The bullpen battle was a little less crowded with only 1 spot open and 3 guys in contention. Cal Quantrill easily took the final spot allowing no runs with a 0.80 WHIP in 10 IP. Josh Staumont and Grant Gavin were the other candidates with Staumont putting up a 3.27 ERA and 1.55 WHIP and Gavin putting up a 5.68 ERA and 1.89 WHIP.

On the offensive side, we had 3 spots open. For the first time in over a decade, Salvador Perez was not the guaranteed starter to open the season. And he did absolutely nothing to show he deserved it. After putting up a .502 OPS in 50 AB he will start the season platooning with Kyle Higashioka who had a .719 OPS. MJ Melendez was also in the fight and was better than Salvy with a .569 OPS but he isn't owed 45 million dollars over the next 4 seasons so he goes down to AAA.

The last 2 spots on the team went to Ryan O'Hearn and Erick Mejia. O'Hearn was tied for the team lead with 4 HR mainly beating out Seuly Matias who had a .642 OPS. While Erick Mejia takes the backup everything role from Cole Tucker. Mejia had a .778 OPS in 57 AB while Cole Tucker had a .677 OPS in 55 AB.

The Rays and Mets continue to dominate the prospect list with both teams having 5 players in the top 50. The Rays are the better of the 2 with 3 in the top 10 and the others at 13 and 21. The Royals place 3 on the list this season. 1 more than last year. Joe Slater makes his debut joining Erick Pena and Michael Pittman. The Reds, Pirates, Braves, Tigers, and Astros had no players.

With 3 off days in the first week, we decided to start Ohtani on opening day to maximize his time in the lineup. He will take the mound on the road against last seasons division-winning Twins. We then head home to take on the White Sox in a 2 game series before the Twins come to town for a 2nd series. We then hit the road to take on the Tigers in a 4 game series making our first 12 games all against division rivals. We then play 4 more division games to end the month giving us 16 of our first 23 in the division. 13 games at home with 10 on the road and only 8 against teams that were over .500 last year. I would like to think the team is better with the moves we made. But getting back to 91 wins could be difficult. The rest of the division struggled with injuries in the 2nd half of last year and should be more of a challenge this time around.

Oviedo tosses seven strong, earns first win

Johan Oviedo took the mound on Mother's Day and the 23-year old RHP defeated the Colorado Rockies to help St Louis avoid a 3 game sweep.
Oviedo scattered 6 hits and struck out three to earn his first major league win.

The lack of offense finally caught up to us in the month of May as the Devils sit at 20-31 7.5 GB of the division leading Angels. Byron Buxton came back to the team at the end of May so hopefully his inclusion might ignite the team.

Top hitter so far:
Darnell Sweeney .296 3HR 15RBI 7SB - keeps delivering

Players that need to step up:
Ryon Healy .216 - back to platooning with Adam Duval
Eli Ybarra .208 - hope he turns it around soon
Kyle Schwarber .200 - power numbers are there might look to platoon against lefties
Jacob Nottingham .153 - can't hit at all this season

The Devils released Rule 5 pick Colin Poche after a poor showing so far this season and recalling Juan Alonso. The team also optioned Yeyson to Triple A activating Buxton.

Our number one pick Rich McCabe was also optioned with his ERA at about 7.00 bringing up another draft pick David Hannah who had an ERA at 2.08

Bit of a rough start for the Devils so far this season as they sit at .500 only 1.5 GB of first some how. Offense has basically been non existent with Darnell and Bote carrying the team. The guys who I thought were going to hit: Jake Cave, Kyle Schwarber, Ryon Healy, and Eli Ybarra are all hitting under .250 most barely cracking .200. The pitching on the other hand has been the saving grace with Ian Anderson dominating and Andrew Heaney living up the the contract. Alex Reyes has been a stud in the long relief and Pedro Strop has been basically unhittable so far saving 7 games and not allowing a run.

Dalton Pompey was leading the team in average at .344 until he went down with a Fractured leg sidelining him for two months. I called up Spencer Brickhouse and made a move acquiring Adam Duvall from the Braves for Hasuan Viera B potential LF, with that move I optioned Billy Burns to Triple A and put Cole Tucker in CF to start.

Hopefully the bats will show up in May or else I might have to make some drastic changes to this offense.

BREAKING NEWS: The Kansas City Royals have come to terms on an extension with OF Jorge Soler for 3 yr/$21.5 million.


Game one:
WP: T. Williams (10-6)

It was a fast start for the Royals offense. Salvy drove in Merrifield in the first inning, and Cam Gallagher hit his his first HR of the season (a solo shot) in the second against Carlos Rodon.

With one out in the fifth, Kris Bubic made his first mistake, and Jose Abreu punished it with a 423 ft bomb to left field to pull the White Sox within one.

In the bottom of the seventh, the White Sox kicked it off with back to back singled by Eloy Jimenez and Luis Roberts. Now in trouble, Bubic got Yermin Mercedes to hit into a huge double play. Julian Merriweather came in to face Jose Abreu. After falling behind 2-0 though, he walked him intentionally to face Yoan Moncada. Moncada would also walk and the bases would be loaded for AL batting leader Adam Eaton. Eaton would take a change up and guide through the infield, playing a pair. Merriweather would strike out Mikie Mahtook, but not until the White Sox took a 3-2 lead heading into the eighth.

The Royals would get a base runner in the ninth, but he would be stranded at second and Chicago wins 3-2.

Game two:
WP: J. Staumont (4-3)
LP: M. Foster (3-5)

Newly acquired Adam Frazier tried to put the Sox up early by hitting a ball just over the right field wall, but Joc Pederson scaled the fence to pull it back to keep it scoreless.

Alaberto Mondesi would break the tie with an RBI double, and the Royals would eventually load the bases for Hunter Dozier with two outs, and he would strike out.

Danny Duffy got through 5.1 innings with great stuff, shut out in tact, but after recording an out against Jose Abreu, had to be pulled from the game with an injury. Daniel Lynch would come into the game.

The White Sox would get the first two men on in the seventh and Adam Eaton would tie the game with a sac fly.

In the bottom of the ninth, in a tie game, the Sox would get a man on. Josh Staumont would then get Luis Gonzalez to ground into a double play, and the game went to extras.

Hunter Dozier would lead off the tenth with a single, scoring Michael Taylor and giving the Royals a 2-1 lead. Merrifeld reached via a fielders choice. With Andrew Benintendi at the plate, the Royals executed a hit and run with scored Merrifield all the way from first. Carlos Santana would add another run with a single.

Josh Staumont would come through in the ninth, retiring the Sox in order to end the game.

Duffy was diagnosed with hip inflammation and will go on the 15 day IL. Jackson Kowar will be called up to take his place in the rotation.

Game three:
WP: D. Keuchel (6-5)
LP: B. Singer (8-7)
S: L. Hendriks (33)

The White Sox took a 1-0 lead off of Brady Singer on a Tim Anderson HR, but the Royals would gain the advantage after an Alaberto Mondesi three run HR off of Dallas Keuchel.

Eloy Jimenez would hit a three run HR of his own. The White Sox would add a fifth run on a Michael Taylor error.

The game would remain 5-3 with the White Sox winning. The Royals and White Sox are both 62-48 atop the AL Central. The Royals will now go on the road for three with the Cardinals before coming hombe for the Yankees, Cardinals, and Astros.

ROYALS FACE CARDINALS IN STATE RIVARLY
Game one:
WP: A. Miller (4-1)

The Royals got the first run of the game, all the way in the fifth on a fielder’s choice my Merrifield that scored Mondesi.

It was a great debut for Jackson Kowar against the Red Birds. Through 5.1 inning he had struck out five and only allowed three singles. In the fifth with one out and two on, the Royals turned to Julian Merriweather to out of the inning, and he did that by striking out Goldschmidt and DeJong.

Scott Barlow came in for Kansas City, and immediately gave up RBI doubles to Andrew Knizner and Matt Carpenter to put the Cardinals up 2-1 and ruin the Kowar first career win. Tommy Edman would add another run.

The bullpen would falter again for KC as Kyle Zimmer for would up a solo HR to Dylan Carlson. The Cardinals win the game 4-1 as the Royals offense didn’t show up.

After the game, the Royals got more bad news, as Andrew Benintendi went in for an MRI on a shoulder he hurt during the game, and it was revealed it was dislocated. He has been placed on the 60 day IL. Seuly Matias has been called up to the MLB club.

The Royals have also optioned Cam Gallagher to triple-a Omaha and recalled C Meibrys Viloria.

Game two:
WP: J. Hicks (4-1)
LP: G. Holland (1-2)
S: G. Gallegos (1)

Joc Pederson reached on an error in the second, and then Hunter Dozier tripled against Carlos Martinez to start the second. Nicky Lopez than singled Dozier home to give the Royals a 2-0 lead early.

In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Knizner would single in a pair off of Brad Keller to tie it. The fans erupted when Carlos Martinez came up to bat and singled, setting up Justin Williams two run single, and the Cards went up 4-2.

Justin Williams and Tommy Edmond would both drive in another run in the fourth.

Down 6-2 in the sixth, the Royals would get singles by Taylor, Soler, and Santana to load the bases with no outs for Joc Pederson. Up 0-2 in the count, Martinez would let Pederson back into the at bat, before walking him and driving in the run. That would be all for Martinez, as Andrew Miller would come in from the bullpen to face Hunter Dozier.

In the first pitch from Miller, Dozier would single up the middle to cut it to a 6-4 Cardinals lead, still bases loaded with no outs. Hanser Alberto would hit into a double play, scoring a run. Salvador Perez would fly out to end the inning, and the Cardinals clinging to a 6-5 lead.

With one out in the 7th, Jordan Hicks challenged Whit Merrifield with a first pitch fastball, and Merrifield hit it out to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals load the bases, and call up Scott Hurst to pinch hit. Facing Greg Holland, he singled into right field to score two runs. Both of the runners who scored were on base because they were hit by pitch.

The Cardinals would to Giovanni Gallegos in the ninth, and he picks up the save.

Game three:
WP: J. Gant (1-3)
LP: G. Holland (1-3)
S: A. Reyes (26)

The scoring was kicked off by Knizner when he doubled off Kris Bubic to plate run.

Salvador Perez hit a solo HR off of Miles Mikolas in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1.

In the top bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals regained the lead in a Harrison Bader solo HR. The Cardinals would add another pair of Bubic in the sixth, and he left after giving up 4 runs.

With one out in the seventh, Dozier would triple and be driven in by a Mondesi single. Mondesi would steal second, and be driven in by a Whit Merrifeld triple. The Royals were all of a sudden only down 4-3, and had the runner at third with only one out for Michael Taylor. Seuly Mattias would ground out to second and the game is tied

Greg Holland would enter for the bottom of the seventh, and give up a double Yadier Molina on the first pitch. Tyler O’Neil would drive him home with a single to break the tie. They would get an insurance run as Paul DeJong drives in O’Neil.

Alaberto Mondesi would hit a solo HR with two outs in the ninth to cut it to 6-5, followed by a Merrifield single. On a full count pitch to Mattias, Reyes would hang a curveball, but Mattias couldn’t do anything but sky out to end the game. The Cardinals complete the three game sweep at home.

Coming into this series, Greg Holland had been the most reliable reliever, but he blew a save and took two losses in the series.

The White Sox are 7-3 in the last ten games while the Royals are just 2-8. The Royals fall to 2 games back in the division and currently hold a 1.5 games over the Angels for the second wildcard spot.

Now the real life trade deadline has passed, I've finally started up my franchise for the year, free from the distractions of real life changes affecting things (I am far too easily swayed on these things).

So I'm the new owners of the Colorado Rockies, free from the insanity that is the Monafort family and their "ingenious" style of management. I set the teams to what they are currently after the deadline, then simmed to the deadline before melting down the team in the way the Rockies really should have. The end result is not pretty, but it's what needed to happen. Gone is pretty much everyone, in comes a bunch of replacement level players, some with a bit of upside, most just placeholders.

The rotation is worse than the lineup tbh so it could be a fun last 60 games!

Cardinals split series with Marlins

The Cardinals (42-27) split their 4 game series with the Marlins to begin the week. The Cardinals and Brewers are not tied atop the NL Central Division.

The Cardinals just continue to struggle, and injuries continue to plague this team as the summer months are upon us. Thankfully they were at least able to split this series against the worst hitting team, average wise, in the majors. The Marlins bats heated up against Cards pitching totaling 37 hits over the 4 games and scoring 21 runs.

The Cardinals will head home for a 3 game weekend series with the Braves and then a quick 2 game set with the White Sox before hitting the road again to close out the month of June.

Carlos Martinez and Starling Marte land on IL

During their series with the Marlins, the Cardinals were dealt two big blows to their roster, and nearly had a third.

Carlos Martinez left his start Tuesday night after 40 pitches due to back issues. Martinez was placed on the 15 Day IL for the 2nd time in about 6 weeks. Martinez has struggled this year after having a stellar 2021 season that led to him landing a 4 year deal this offseason.

Levi Prater will be recalled from Memphis to take the rotation spot.


Starling Marte left Thursday's matinee with a shoulder injury that turned out to be a tear that will put the centerfielder out of the lineup for 1-2 months. The Cardinals don't expect Marte back until at earliest mid-August, but he may not return until September. Marte had picked up his offensive production of late after getting off to a slow start. Marte seemed to settle in at the lead off position and was in the top 10 in stolen bases with 14.

Lane Thomas was recalled from Memphis. Its expected he and Connor Capel will share centerfield duties as the Cards try to determine their next move, if any.
