Cardinals lose Joey Gallo for the season

With Spring Training winding down, the Cardinals suffered a blow to their lineup losing Joey Gallo for the season due to an achilles tear. Gallo suffered the injury trying to go first to third on a double by Nolan Arenado in yesterday's game against the Mets.

The 29 year old signed a 2 year deal with a mutual option on the 2nd year with the Cardinals this past offseason after being acquired in a trade with the Rangers last trade deadline.

Gallo was hitting .257 with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI's this Spring and saw time at both right field and first base. He was slated to hit 6th in the lineup to bolster the middle of the lineup and provide left handed pop.

With Gallo being out, the Cardinals will now turn to Dylan Carlson to be the everyday right fielder. Carlson is having a terrific spring hitting .312 with a homerun 5 RBI's and Grapefruilt league leading 6 doubles. There was discussion about Carlson starting over Harrison Bader who continues to struggle at the plate.

The goal of Spring Training is to obviously get into shape, get into a routine and get better. But the number one priority is to stay healthy and up until now, aside from a bump or two, the Cards were doing just that.

The Cardinals will have a handful of games left to shake up the lineup and in an effort to get ready for Opening Day.

After being one of the hottest offenses in baseball the first few weeks, The Cubs are no hit thru 7 by Huascar Ynoa and are only saved by Brian Snitker, who went to the pen' in the 8th. In the end, Cubs are 1 hit and lose 5-0 to the Bravos.

Cardinals sign veteran Charlie Morton to one year deal

The Cardinals have signed veteran starting pitcher Charlie Morton to a one year deal worth $5MM.

The 39 year old Morton went 8-8 last year with the Braves pitching to a 3.91 ERA over 154 innings and 31 starts.

The theme this Spring has been the Cardinals lack of consistency in their starting pitching. Jack Flaherty has looked good, as has Jake Odorizzi. Dakota Hudson has been fair and Kwang Hyun Kim left his last start with a shoulder soreness that will keep him out for likely the remainder of Spring Training.

Carlos Martinez, Levi Prater, Jake Woodford, and Bernardo Flores were competing for the 5th spot, but none have given manager Mike Schildt any confidence that they could be productive. Its likely that Martinez goes to the bullpen as Martinez seems sharp for an inning or two and then the wheels just come off. Prater is probably a year away, Woodford maybe two and Flores shows sparks, but is very inconsistent.

Charlie Morton will likely only get one start this Spring with the games winding down, but the Cardinals are confident that he can be an arm that strengthens what has been the Cards biggest weakness this spring.

Here's hoping as Opening Day is just a few days away.

              PIRATES GET SWEPT AT WRIGLEY

The pitching held its own in the three game series, but the offense was weak and the Pirates get swept by the Cubs with scores of 2-0, 2-1, and 4-3.

Game three was the most exciting game of the series, with the Matt Duffy beating out a double play ball in the bottom of the 12th to walk off the Buccos.

The Pirates will now head to Cinci for three against the Reds.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

Hey guys I'm back after a much-needed mental break.

I will be using the Tigers and rebranded them to the Michigan Reapers, playing at Industry center stadium. I sim the majority of the games with critical situations on and play the first game in every division matchup. If the series is tied, I will quick manage the tie breaker.

I started this Franchise last week so currently I just finished the All-Star game and sit at 45-47 8.5GB of the Indians and 4.5GB in the Wild Card. My All Stars this year were Matthew Boyd, John Means, and Jose Cisnero.

                Lineup:
SS: Willi Castro .271 3HR 22RBI 13SB – has been injured off and on this season
2B: Johnathan Schoop .239 11HR 33RBI – started out hot has cooled off since
DH/1B: Miguel Cabrera .345 10HR 54RBI – currently leads the league in average and is a 69 overall
                1B: Jared Walsh .247 20HR 48RBI – see trades below
CF: Akil Baddoo .260 13HR 35RBI – won Rookie of the month in April
3B: Jeimer Candelario .277 4HR 25RBI – has been pretty steady all year
RF: Nomar Mazara .175 7HR 27RBI – Platooning him with Robbie Grossman
C: Jake Rogers .176 1HR 2RBI – just called him up, both starting catchers Haase and Greiner are injured
LF: Victor Reyes .256 6HR 23RBI – has been solid

                Bench:
OF: Robbie Grossman .314 1HR 9RBI – Great at hitting lefties
UT: Niko Goodrum .199 2HR 12RBI – might look to move
C: Dustin Garneau – no ABS yet
                UT: Harold Castro .261 2HR 11RBI
                OF/3B: Jacoby Jones .160 3HR 14RBI – probably will be making a change here

Cardinals place Carlos Martinez on outright assignment waivers

The Cardinals have placed Carlos Martinez on outright assignment waivers.

The 33 year old Martinez has struggled this spring, after having a poor 2022 season. Martinez has pitched 10 innings this spring with a 8.10 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and has given up 4 homeruns in those innings.

Its a disturbing trend after an excellent 2021 season that saw Martinez bounce back to a 15 win season in 187 innings with a 2.88 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.

Martinez signed a big 4 year deal after that season.

Then 2022 came around and Martinez posted just 6 wins in 104 innings with a 4.99 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. He had just 5 quality starts in 18 games started.

If he clears waivers, its unclear what the organization will do. I don't foresee a big market for him with his recent struggles and his contract. He could end up in Memphis trying to regain his 2021 form.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

This is my first entry. I play every inning of every game.

                    Arenado Injured

The Cardinals (29-30, 3rd in Central) lost All Star MVP candidate Nolan Arenado to a leg fracture. Arenado was injured diving for a ball at third base in an 8-5 win against Cincinnati. He is going to miss the next 30-60 days and was placed on the 60 Disabled List.

At the time of his injury, Arenado was tearing up the league, hitting over .425 in his previous 10 games and has 25 more hits than any other Cardinal this season. Other stats at time of injury.

4th in NL in Batting Average (.336)
                    2nd in NL Hits (78)
3rd in NL At Bats (232)
                    3rd in NL Doubles (17)
                    2nd in NL HRs (18)
                    3rd in NL RBIs (45)
10th in NL Runs Scored (34)
                    20th in NL OB% (.374)
                    2nd in NL Slugging % (.642)
                    3rd in NL OPS (1.016)

Huge loss for the Red Birds

Going forward, Cards will rely even more heavily on the bats of Matt Carpenter (.274, 14HR, 33RBI), Paul Dejong who leads the NL with 20 HR while only batting .233 with 41 RBI.

Dylan Carlson will get a lot more playing time over these next 2 months in hopes to improve on his lack luster .206 BA, ZERO homeruns, and 4 RBI in 102 AB this season. Fans are wondering why management is giving Carlson the first crack at the full time opening when utility outfielder Lane Thomas is hitting .307 with 2 HR, 5 doubles, 11 RBI in 75 AB. Management stressed that Thomas will see increased playing time himself over the next 2 months.

Its not hopeless, the Cards starting rotation has been somewhat average and a bit inconsistent—but the bullpen is solid.

Lets hope the Cards can continue their solid play of late despite the devastating loss of Arenado. They are just 3.5 games behind Milwaukee who sits atop the Central at 32-26.

The Cards are looking to complete their first sweep of the season, a four game sweep, to boot. They have won 6 of their last 8 games.

Cardinals finish spring with 8-16 record

Spring Training 2023 has come to a conclusion and the Cardinals finished with a less than impressive 8-16 record.

Consistent starting pitching was the biggest worry for the Cardinals during the Spring, as only Jack Flahery and Jake Odorizzi looked solid throughout. Dakota Hudson was pretty good as well though his last outing was rough. (2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 HRA)

Kwang Hyun Kim, Levi Prater, Carlos Martinez (outrighted to Memphis), and Jake Woodford struggled to be productive at the back end of the rotation. They struggled so much so that the Cards signed veteran Charlie Morton to a deal to help out. Morton made just one start this spring but was good. He'll likely start the season in the rotation along with Kim, who got knocked around, but seemed to find his way out of jams more often than not.

As for the bullpen, the Cards are set and have legitimate depth this year. So much so that Genesis Cabrera and Hanser Robles will start at Memphis this year. Dominic Leone and Seth Elledge earned spots, by both pitching over 9 innings this spring not allowing a run with a WHIP under 0.50.

Offensively the Cards look good despite losing Joey Gallo. Tyler O'Neill is fitting well into the 6th spot and Dylan Carlson hit over .340 this spring batting 8th. The only concern is Harrison Bader at leadoff who is still striking out too much for a guy with speed and batting lead off. The Cards experimented late in the spring with Edman hitting leadoff and Carlson hitting second, dropping Bader to 8th, but its expected that Bader will hit leadoff on Opening Day.

Despite their poor record, the Cardinals figure to once again be contenders in the National League Central. The Brewers definitely got better and the Reds and Cubs are still fairly solid. Even the Pirates should be more competitive with their youngsters having another season under their belt.

Time to enjoy the ride of the 2023 season.

                        CLOSER:

                        Alex Reyes

The Cardinals stuck with Yairo Munoz as a bench player over Nick Dunn and Edmundo Sosa simply because they want those two to get continuous at-bats versus playing just once a week, to start the season. It's likely, one or both will be in St.Louis before the end of May.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

I decided to just finish up the season as the Reapers finished at 75-87 16GB of the division winning Indians. JD Martinez and Christian Yelich were the MVPS while Shane Beiber and Trevor Bauer were your CY Young award winners. The reapers did get some hardware with Akil Baddoo winning Rookie of the year and Victor Reyes winning a gold glove. The Yankees won the World Series beating the Mets

                          Lineup:
SS: Willi Castro .290 12HR 55RBI 25SB – Solid season from our leadoff hitter
                          2B: Johnathan Schoop .256 22HR 70RBI – finished strong, might give him a one-year deal
                          DH/1B: Miguel Cabrera .307 15HR 74RBI – Solid season considering he’s a 65 overall now
1B: Jared Walsh .249 34HR 81RBI – hope to improve on the average, but solid season
CF: Akil Baddoo .244 22HR 65RBI – won Rookie of the year
3B: Jeimer Candelario .272 11HR 55RBI – pretty underwhelming season thought I’d get more power out of him
RF: Nomar Mazara .206 12HR 43RBI – finished a litter better but a pretty crap season
C: Victor Caratini .226 3HR 18RBI – not the greatest probably will bring him back to backup
LF: Victor Reyes .236 10HR 43 – Solid in the field but definitely need an upgrade

                          OF/3B: Jacoby Jones .189 5HR 18RBI – oof

                          Rotation:
Matthew Boyd 12-7 204 IP 3.34 ERA 1.34 WHIP – might bring back

MRP: Hunter Strickland 2-1 25 IP 3.91 ERA 0.99 WHIP – not too bad
MRP: Josh Taylor 5-1 59 IP 3.17 ERA 1.31 WHIP – pretty solid
SU: Jordan Hicks 6-5 56 IP 4.45 ERA 1.75 WHIP – not great, gave him a 2YR deal for 8M

Orioles still below .500 despite midweek three game winning streak

The Orioles fell to 2-5 after their series opening loss to the Blue Jays on April the 14th. That loss (1-3) was the third game in which the team was only able to manage one run. However, after that loss, Baltimore rattled off three wins to bring them back to .500 at 5-5. Another one run game would see the team drop to 5-6 and a loss the following day would bring their record to 5-7.

Baltimore was able to split the series with the Royals (who came in at 2-7) with a 5-4 victory in the last game of the four game series. That win came despite the Royals out hitting the Orioles 15 to 8.

The team's offensive struggles have continued from last year but hopefully Ryan Mountcastle's pending return from injury will help wake up the rest of the team. Mountcastle will return to his DH role against righties and will take over at 1st for Trey Mancini against lefties. Mancini has struggled the most early on in 2022 as he is batting just .137 with seven hits in 51 at bats.

The Orioles upcoming schedule will bring them back home to Maryland for a 11 game home stand. That home stand with start with four games vs. the Twins then three Vs. the Rays and April will finish off with four more vs. the A's.

Cardinals lose Dakota Hudson to fractured wrist

The 2023 season is off to a rough start for the Cardinals. Dakota Hudson was injured just 5 pitches into his season debut against the Brewers after taking a Anthony Rizzo line drive off of his right wrist.

Hudson was diagnosed with a fractured wrist and will be sidelined for 2 months. The Cardinals placed him on the 60 Day IL.

The Cardinals selected the contract of Carlos Martinez whom they outrighted to Memphis during Spring Training to fulfill the rotation vacancy. There was talk of recalling LHP Levi Prater, but at this point the organization wants to see Prater make a start or two at Memphis before making any decisions.

Starting pitching was a concern during spring training, but Hudson was solid and being relied upon to help the rotation be productive. Now the Cardinals will have to wait until at least mid-June for the right hander to return.
