Why is the solution always "screw defense?"

Whatever happened to "just get better?"

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but all sports evolve.

The games are much different with each passing decade. The old guys from when I was a kid in the 80's used to complain about how the game was in the 80's saying it wasn't like it was in the 50's etc etc. Change is inevitable to keep up with the changing times.

          Actually I won't...

I'll feel for the pitcher only because he pitched a hell of a game only for his offense to let him down and not be able to plate a single run.

Hell its hard these days to get a pitcher to go past 6 innings.

              Again:

Why is the solution always "screw defense?" Specifically, "screw the pitcher?"

You seriously think this sport is only about hitting?

In 1863, they stopped the pitcher from moving his feet while pitching.

In 1867, they let the batter TELL the pitcher whether to throw it high or low.

In 1880, a walk, which took nine balls, was reduced to eight.

Also in 1880, they eliminated the strikeout on a bounce.

In 1884, a walk was cut again to six balls.

In 1885, they let the hitters use bats that were flat on one side.

In 1887, the box, from within the pitcher had to throw, was shrunk from seven feet long to 5.5 feet long.

In 1887, they cut the walk again, to five balls.

In 1887, they changed a strikeout from three strikes to four.

In 1889, they cut the walk for a fourth time, to four balls.

In 1893, they moved the pitcher from 50 feet away from the plate, to 60 feet 6 inches away from the plate.

And in 1893, they also eliminated the box altogether, and replaced it with the tiny slab, or pitcher's rubber.

In 1908, they stopped letting the pitcher put new dirt on a new baseball.

In 1910, they replaced the solid center of a baseball with cork, that made a hit go faster and farther.

In 1920, they found even better cork, to make it go faster and farther still--pretty much just for Babe Ruth.

In 1920, they also banned the spitball, the shineball, the emeryball, the licorice-ball, and the scuffball.

In 1931, they stopped letting fielders line up in the batter's vision.

Around 1932, they found even BETTER cork, to make the ball travel even further for everybody.

In 1963, they tried to enforce the balk rule as it was written, and balks quadrupled.

In 1968, they started suspending pitchers for throwing spitballs.

In 1969, they dropped the pitcher's mound by five inches.

Also in 1969, they shrunk the strike zone.

In 1973, they introduced the designated hitter as a two-year experiment for the last forty-nine years.

In 1987, they did SOMETHING to the ball--we still don't know what--and homers went up 30%.

In 1988, they did the thing with the balk rule again.

Around 1989, they started letting hitters wear body armor.

In 1990, they started turning a blind eye to PED use, which STILL favored hitters, because a hitter can adjust his timing to a pitcher throwing faster because of PEDs, but a pitcher can't do shinola about a fly ball that goes 30 feet farther because of PEDs.

And that's just the stuff we KNOW about.

Because baseball, while constantly announcing its RECORD ATTENDANCE this, and UNPRECEDENTED PROFITS that, has always lived with the paranoid conviction that if we went back to the 1-0 game--the game which mesmerized America a century ago to the virtual exclusion of ALL other sports--if that happened, baseball would cease to exist tomorrow.

Every on-field crisis, punish the pitchers.

World Series fix in 1919? Juice the baseball!

The strike of 1994? Juice the batters!

              Free baseball? MANFRED RUNNER!

              Just cut to the chase.

You think baseball is only about hitting? Turn it into coach-pitch Little League. Or tee-ball.

Even the Mets could score runs hitting off a tee...well, the ones that didn't hurt themselves doing so.

                  It's called "knowing history."

The designated hitter, a direct violation of the very first rule of baseball, was a "three-year experiment." Now it's permanent.

They claim the Manfred runner is temporary. See above.

I always felt like that was directly related to trying to keep these pitchers healthy since there are so few really good ones and the hitters have gotten pretty darn good. So, I sort of get the 6 innings thing, even though it can be frustrating.

So if a rule is around a while, that makes it okay?

Sounds like a waiting game to break our wills. "The DH has been here for 50 years, oldhead."

"Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of NINE players each." Very first rule.
DH lovers don't care that the DH is repugnant to the VERY FIRST RULE.

The three-pointer has been around even longer. Only recently did players realize it breaks the game of basketball.

It's called a long con. You were fooled for so long that your brain thinks you were never fooled.

Watch. A guy will lose a perfect game because of this Manfred runner rule. And my rant will age like fiiiiiine wiiiiiine.

And you'll realize I was right all along.

Okay I don't really get what you're saying but it's all good. Have a good one.

The designated hitter, a direct violation of the very first rule of baseball, was a "three-year experiment." Now it's permanent.

They claim the Manfred runner is temporary. See above.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Incorrect. If you look back at the Knickerbocker rules, the very first rule of baseball is members must strictly observe the agreed upon time for the exercise and be punctual in their attendance.

Boy seems like people are especially 'mad-online' recently....seems like all the threads in the baseball forums are devolving into weird arguments that are only partially related to the original subject
