Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise, MTO, Presentation and Commentary Feature Premiere Brea

I skipped 22 which was the 1st time in 10+ year I didn’t buy MLBTS. I saw no good reason to upgrade from 21’

After yesterday’s stream, I’m excited to get back into it. Draft is a huge component and presentation looks promising.

Just bought a brand new LG C2 OLED tv…let’s see how it looks compared to my 2016 1080p Vizio!

      getting old is not fun.
I'm not young, but I don't think its an age thing. I think people REALLY look at every detail graphically, and others look more at the "overall" and think it looks great. Your TV setup also matters. I think the game looks great. I see some things that can be improved but its not game breaking for me. It's a video game that on the field plays amazing.

I think there is a very good reason for this. For a game like this, where swing timing is SO crucial, having a stable 60 FPS is a necessity during gameplay. If you look back at the older consoles, we often had to deal with frame rate inconsistencies (sometimes globally, sometimes they were in specific stadiums) and it caused folks a lot of consternation.

A HUGE slew of current gen titles have suffered from poor and/or inconsistent framerates as graphical fidelity has been bumped up. I know the standard response anytime this is brought up is "Well current gen consoles should be able to handle it". The reality we are seeing right now across the gaming-space is that the majority of games are running on Quality modes hitting 30 FPS (which is not acceptable for MLBTS) with Performance modes often being inconsistent at hitting 60 FPS at sub-4k resolutions. Games with the best performance measures are usually (though not always) ones that have more simplified artwork styles.

The other key aspect of this game that differs from other sports games are the stadiums/crowds. We see a LOT more of the stadium and crowds during gameplay for MLB than any other sports title. This eats up available system resources which ties into performance (you may recall from the PS4 era titles, an improved "smoothness" of gameplay when in practice mode (with no fans in seats) vs normal games. That hasn't really changed - though the effect in current gen titles is less pronounced.

I think SDS understands this and does the best they can at walking the line between making visual improvements and balancing the criticality of frame rate stability. Hoping for MLBTS to look as "pretty" as Madden (for example) while maintaining that vital 60 FPS during gameplay is probably setting yourself up for disappointment.

Now, there probably ARE more things that SDS can continue to work on to bump things up a bit more that will have fewer impacts on performance and I think we continue to see iterative improvements. But I don't think we're going to suddenly get a new version of the game one day that makes that monumental leap forward that some here seem to be wanting because the performance is more critical.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise, MTO, Presentation and Commentary Feature Premiere Brea

At the beginning of the premiere schedule, I was very much on the fence if I was going to buy or not. After the RTTS stream, I had decided I was going to pass. But after watching last night, I am back on the fence about what I am going to do.

There are 3 solid wins for me here:

            1. Draft class generation. This is honestly huge. Biggest win in the premiere. Looks like some editing will still be required but as someone who sims multiple seasons before playing, this is a welcome sight.

            2. RP/CP draft logic. Seeing the CPU not draft RP/CP in round 1 is great.

            3. Scouting once weekly. As related to what I said in number 1, simming multiple seasons into the future, scouting became very tedious and time consuming. The once weekly is a win here.

            On the other hand...

There are still some things that could be improved here. With the changes in scouting and the draft, there is an opportunity to increase roster size. Doing that, you can increase the number of rounds in the draft. My concern is that with this redesign of scouting/drafting around 93 player rosters, we will not see an increase in roster size anytime soon, if ever.

They also mentioned no tweaks to progression/regression. This is something that was improved in 22 but still a ways off. Hopefully this is something they continued to tweak, but did not mention.

The outside screens of stadiums are ehhh at best. Should have fully committed and saved it for another year.

They mentioned they adjusted salaries and such. I am not sure what this means but when they fixed budgets last year, a side effect was you were able to severely undercut players with 0.000 to pre-arbitration service time. If they fixed this, it is a win. If it made things worse, it is a loss. But no way to know yet.

In the end, I am still on the fence. It will not be a pre-order thing. I will wait on my trusted friend who has pre-ordered to play and tell me how the game really is.

Honestly, this stream is making it a tough choice as scouting/drafting was number 1 on my list of improvements alongside continued progression/regression tweaks.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise, MTO, Presentation and Commentary Feature Premiere Brea

SDS could simply work on the textures on most assets and that alone could make the game look drastically different without hurting performance any. In this day and age, textures don't really impact performance at all anymore unless you're on a PC from 2010 with limited VRAM. That's not an issue on consoles these days.

The dirt textures are simply not good, skin textures look flat and like a skin colored paper, not actual skin, grass textures are just... terrible for the most part. Changes to all of the above would instantly make the game look different without the need to do any heavy lifting with things like new lighting, changing any 3D models, or implementing features like subsurface scattering(which would be welcome, it's 2023 afterall).

Textures can do a lot of heavy lifting by themselves and it's a shame that SDS doesn't really put in much work annually to update their textures throughout the game. Simply having grass and dirt and skin that looked like the real thing would make the game feel next gen. Having uniforms that aren't low res in gameplay cameras would also make the game feel modern, but it's clearly not a priority for them, which is okay, but it's going to warrant some criticism.

On the point you make about the 93 man roster. I know nothing about coding I do wonder how much of an effort it takes or shall i say how complicated it is to let the A ball roster go from 15 to 26 and have the A ball teams play games. I have to image it is complicated to do or I can not see why they would not have done it already. It must be a lot more work then just adding 11 players. Has to be tied into the other code for every level.

I’m REALLY not young. I agree about the game looks great and I have a great t.v. I recently loaded up the PS4 version of the game on my PS5 to see if there was a graphical difference from what I was seeing on my PS5 with that version…..big difference.

I hear people talking about SDS getting with the program about “next gen” graphics then I look on the PS store and many of the PS5 games aren’t even close to what is next gen. There are a few that are outstanding and many that are dated looking.

I harp on the CAPS a lot. Just a bug of mine as it would certainly help out when creating omitted players, but bottom line, I can get past that. The gameplay and enjoyment value are just too good.

They hinted that the franchise code is layered with everything else. They said that when they mentioned the CBA changes.

I know nothing about coding so I assume you are right. It would have been done if they could easily do it. And maybe they rebuilt the code for the draft so it is easier to expand on.

My gut tells me that we will likely see 93 man rosters for a while.

Like I said though, still on the fence.

Presentation took another significant step forward as I expected and am happy to see. The updated themes, the new popups at the beginning of the season, the in season dynamic commentary, are all welcomed additions/improvements. I hope to see some additional in game stat overlays that were missing in '22 (pitcher comparison, league/team leaders, weather, down on the farm report, etc..)

I want to speak to franchise mode. I was honored with being invited to participate in SDS Community Day Event for franchise. And I want to share one thing that was abundantly clear during this event. And that is that Tim, Clay, and the entire team that participated in this event, that works on franchise mode in some form or another, are extremely passionate about the mode, and care and listen to, what the community wants in franchise mode because they are franchise nuts just like we are and want the same things as well.

While there are many things that we all collectively and individually want in the mode, its going to take time to get to those points. Just this year, a lot of time had to be focused on getting the new CBA rules into the game, which listening to them speak wasn't a small task to accomplish.

I came away with the sense that they have a roadmap so to speak to get to where they, and the franchise community, want it to be and the directions in which they need to go to get there. And even more so, I came away with the feeling that as a member of the hardcore franchise community, we have the right people driving us to that destination.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

That is really cool to hear thanks for the update. I am so jealous you got to take part in that. Awesome stuff
