Braves Humble Padres in 4 game set

The Padres were riding high after getting off to a 5-1 start to open the season. The Braves brought them back to reality over the weekend.

Series: April 6-9 San Diego Padres @ Atlanta Braves

Max fried was dominant in the Braves home opener. Fried threw 7 shutout innings while striking out 8 Friar hitters. Travis d'Arnaud's 2 run homer proved enough as the Braves ended up winning 4-1. Xander Bogaert's bat remained hot as he went 2-4 for the losing side.

Once again Braves pitching stymied Padres bats as the Braves bested the Friars 5-1. Kyle Wright went 6 2/3 strong innings with only giving up 1 run. Sean Murphy and Vaughn Grissom each homered with Grissom collecting 3 hits and a double to go with that homer. Braves win 5-1

Nelson Cruz hit a run scoring single off Colin McHugh in the top of the 9th to break a 2-2 tie and give the Padres a 3-2 lead. Josh Hader struck out 2 in the bottom of the 9th to earn his 2nd save of the season. Seth Lugo despite getting a no decision pitched well scattering 4 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings while striking out 6. Xavier Bogaerts was 3-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI for the winners, while Vaughn Grissom homered for the 2nd time in as many days for the Braves.

Sun. April 9th
The Braves jumped all over Padres starter Michael Wacha right from the first pitch. The Braves touched him up for 9 earned runs in 1 2/3 innings en route to a 13-7 win to close the series. Matt Olson led the Braves offense with a mammoth home run in the 2nd and ended the day with a pair of hits and 3 RBI. Juan Soto hit a pair of home runs in the losing effort.

Injury Note:
It was a bitter sweet win for the Braves as star OF Ronald Acuna was injured sliding in to 3rd base late in the Braves win. Acuna suffered a Broken Shin and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Next Series
The Padres record is now 6-4 and next travel to New York to take on the 6-4 Mets.

So I’m in the middle of my second season of my Astros Franchise (with new owner Jeff Smith, who cut our payroll budget to $100 million).

One thing that has become abundantly clear is that I SUCK at scouting and drafting. In my first season I tried scouting a bunch of guys around my draft pick spots. However, my first round pick ended up being a 72 overall 78 potential outfielder. The highest potential player I chose in year one was 84 potential, but he is a 55 overall pitcher, so I doubt he will ever make it that high.

So my second year I came in with a different approach. I scouted positions for the first 4-5 weeks and then I started scouting individual players. I thought I had it figured out… then my first round pick ended up being a 60 overall 82 potential SP. I ended up with one more 80 potential player… zero 90 potential players.

I’m awful at it right now.

I did a few test runs before the roster update came out and I started my franchise, the best luck I had was scouting by position. I do each assignment for four weeks and make sure all my scouts have at least 90 efficiency so I get 15% completed each week. Others have had success scouting individuals but this is what worked for me

Pirates get first series win/sweep of May

The Pirates left home and travelled to Baltimore to face the Orioles after starting May just 2-7 for the month. Their luck would change in their series against the Orioles as they swept the series in front of Baltimore faithful 4-1,4-2 and 5-2.

The victories came as a result in great starting pitching for the Pirates. Each starter (Brubaker,Velasquez and Contreras) got into the 7th inning of their respective games with Brubaker taking a shutout into the 9th inning of his game before he allowed his sole run via a Adley Rutchsman HR.

Game two was a strike out fest for both teams as each had 12 of their own. Out of the starters, Velasquez had 9 while Urquidy of Baltimore had 7.

Game three was won by the Pirates in the first inning as the three runs scored would be all they would need to clinch the series sweep. Andrew McCutchen had two homeruns in the game and three in the series bringing his season total to eight which is tied with Oneil Cruz for the team lead.

David Bednar closed out all three games which has him now at 15 saves for the year. Duane Underwood JR tried his best to let Baltimore win in game two. His spot as a setup man is gone and his spot on the major league team is in jeopardy.

Pittsburgh will now stay on the road for a short two game series in Detroit against the Tigers (12-28)

I’ve lost 5 in a row with the cubs. And 9 of the last 11. I still hold a 10.5 game lead over St Louis and Milwaukee. But I’m going to be taking a small break from the game as DLC for Horizon Forbidden West is about to launch. Dead Island 2 on Friday. And Star Wars next week.

National League Futures defeat American League Futures 3-2

The Futures of the National League defeated the Futures of the American League 3-2 on Saturday evening in Seattle. The NL Futures led 3-0 heading into the later innings and were able to hang on to win.

The AL Futures were led by Jackson Holliday at the plate who went 2 for 3 with a 2 run double in the 7th that made things interesting late.

The Cardinals were represented by Michael McGreevy who pitched an inning striking out 2 allowing no baserunners.

The All-Star Break Festivities continue in Seattle with the Homerun Derby on Monday night followed by the Mid-Summer Classic on Tuesday evening.

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops continue to find ways to win games. They completed a two-game sweep of rival Prescott with a walk-off win on the Fourth of July to win their 60th game of the season.

The Hops took the opener with a 4-0 shutout over the Hot Shots. Alex Farmer tossed seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and striking out seven to pick up his eighth win on the season.

Flagstaff grabbed the lead in the fourth inning on an Oscar Aleman RBI single, driving in Arturo Mardones. They would pad that lead in the seventh on a Roberto Geronimo two-run home run down the left field line. Art Mason would add a solo home run in the eighth to put the Hops up 4-0.

Pedro Macias picked up his second save on the season, recording the final six outs.

On the Fourth of July, the teams provided the fireworks as they combined to hit six home runs and the Hops rallied for an 8-7 walk-off victory thanks to a Josh Ortega three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.

This one was a pitchers duel, tied at 1-1 through five innings. But there would not be a scoreless frame the rest of the way.

Prescott grabbed the lead in the sixth on a Collins RBI single that scored Josh Carroll. Josh Ortega would blast a two-run shot in the bottom half to put the Hops up 3-2.

Harwill O’Kane would tie the game up in the top of the seventh with a home run to right off of Shoe-Lace O’Tying. But Forrest Owen would promptly untie it with a deep home run to left in the bottom of the seventh to give Flagstaff a 4-3 lead.

Harwill O’Kane would then blast a three-run home run off of Aldo Osuna in the eighth to put the Hot Shots up 6-4. It was his second of the game and 15th on the season. Oscar Aleman lead off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right to cut the lead to one. The Hops would then load the bases, but Forrest Owen flew out to the warning track in left to end the inning.

In the ninth, Josh Carroll lined a two-out RBI single to give the Hot Shots a two run lead for their new closer, Xavier Doyle. But he could not seal the deal. A leadoff double from Art Mason got things going. Arturo Mardones popped out to short right field. Oscar Aleman lined a single to right and that brought up Josh Ortega. He had already homered in the game and he made Doyle pay. He hung a slider and Ortega hit a no doubter onto the roof in left to walk it off. It was Ortega’s 25th on the season and helped Flagstaff to their sixth straight win over the Hot Shots.

Flagstaff (60-26) will have tomorrow off before hosting Roswell (38-48) in a four-game series to end the home stand.

Trades: Surprise has traded 31-year-old first baseman Reynaldo Pulido (83 OVR, A POT) to Chandler in exchange for 24-year-old first baseman Salomon Garrett (73 OVR, C POT) and 24-year-old reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (59 OVR, C POT). This is a trade that makes some sense for Chandler, but really looks odd for Surprise and their fans as they sit just 4.5 games out of first in a very mediocre DL Central. Pulido currently is hitting .281 with 24 home runs and 55 RBIs and will likely either DH or split time at first with Carl Lentzkow.

The Javelinas have acquired 26-year-old center fielder Mark Lantern (79 OVR, A POT) from Yuma in exchange for 19-year-old starting pitcher Jon Barretto (74 OVR, C POT) and 24-year-old reliever Elroy McCauley (71 OVR, C POT). Lantern is expected to see some time with the loss of T.J. Hart to a broken hand.

Chandler has made a move to bolster it’s lineup as they have acquired 33-year-old third baseman Cory Law (86 OVR, B POT) from Yuma in exchange for 19-year-old first baseman Spencer Ono (53 OVR, B POT) and 24-year-old starting pitcher Samuel Aparicio (76 OVR, B POT). Aparicio is the #16 prospect in the IBL. The Chiefs have picked up two big bats this week as they look to keep a hold on first place in the DL East. Law was hitting .291 with 20 home runs and 49 RBIs with the Dust Devils. These two trades really put the Chiefs in position to take the division as we head towards the All-Star break.

Around the League: Henderson scored four times in the top of the ninth to defeat Tucson 9-6, and ending the Roadrunners winning streak at four games, while running their winning streak to five games. Jorge Delgado lead the way, going 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs in the win. Glendale’s Dan Moore (4-8) out-dueled Phoenix’s Frank Rayna (7-3) in a 2-1 victory for the Desert Dogs. Moore tossed 8.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out seven. Three San Diego pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter, striking out eight, in a 10-0 victory over Colorado Springs.

West Texas’ Alfonzo Ryan suffered a torn MCL in the Bison’s 5-2 loss to Yuma. Ryan’s season is over. The 21-year-old first baseman was hitting .256 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs for the Bison. San Antonio’s T.J. Hart suffered a broken right hand, when he was hit by a pitch in the Javelinas 6-5 victory over Albuquerque on Tuesday evening. Hart will go on the Injured List and could miss up to two months. This is a huge blow to the Javelinas as Hart was hitting .322 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs and was considered one of the Mountain League MVP candidates.

Haven't updated in a bit, so here's what's gone down. We finished with 109 wins the regular season, beat the Yankees in 4 in the ALDS and swept the Angels in the ALCS. Now we're taking on Atlanta in the World Series

Finally have '23, PS4 version, and will be playing tonight after it downloads. I have a plan to do a 30 team franchise playing as a team that has never won a World Series. Then switching to another team and so on, until all teams have at least one Series in the Record Books.

I am not planning on picking up the next few games or at least until I have a PS5 or '27 when Oakland opens up in Vegas.

Kevin Gausman did his part to keep the game close through five innings, but after his departure, Atlanta feasted on the Toronto bullpen for six runs over the last four innings. Ronald Acuna smacked three dingers as part of the Braves' attack. Max Fried was forced out of the game in the third with an injury and will likely miss the remainder of the series.

I started with Miami as my 23 franchise, but the intrigue and challenge of building Cincinnati back to the Big Red Machine was too hard to pass up.....

Elly De La Cruz, Hunter Greene, Nick Lolodo, Noevli Marte....not much there ready to compete right away. And a very small payroll. Its not gonna be easy.

Atlanta jumped on their former teammate Mike Soroka early and often, and he was chased with one out in the fifth as a result. Toronto trailed 8-2 after eight, but made things interesting with a four run ninth, but couldn't get any closer and now trail 2 games to 1.

Pirates split two game series with Tigers

The Tigers have had a slow start to the season and especially the month of May. Coming into their mid month series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit had won just one game in the month and had an overall record of 1-11 for the month.

Game one against Pittsburgh would see Detroit's current losing streak reach double digits as Pittsburgh took the first game 4-3. Pittsburgh got the scoring started in the top of the 3rd as Andrew McCutchen hit his team leading 9th homerun of the season. Detroit answered back in the bottom of the inning when Javier Baez's double was followed up by a Nick Maton two run HR, his 3rd on the year. Detroit increased that lead to 3-1 in the 5th inning when Akil Baddoo hit his 4th homerun off of the Pirates starter, Mitch Keller. Pittsburgh responded in the 7th inning to tie the game at 3-3 and eventually took the lead in the 9th when Bryan Reynolds knocked in what would be the game winning rbi with a automatic double to left center field. With the lead going into the bottom of the ninth, it was almost guaranteed that the Pirates would come out victorious as their guy, David Bednar has been perfect on the year. And perfect he would stay as Bednar took down the Tiger hitters 1,2,3.

Game two saw Detroit end that losing streak after they took a five run lead after two innings that Pittsburgh couldn't overcome. Rich Hill got hit around early and often in what was undoubtedly his worst start of the year although he did turn it around after that second and was able to stay in the game through the seventh inning.

Pittsburgh will now return home to face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks (18-26)
