Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Well first Spring Training game after my brief pause and my prized prospect that I drafted, SP 20 year old Bob Valencia throws 3 innings of perfect baseball striking out 6 of the 9 batters he faced.

Later prospect Chase Davis hits a walk off grand slam.

Yeah I’m starting to like this team

      2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: Noah Syndergaard vs Josiah Gray
Josiah Gray has not been the same pitcher since he gave up the game winning home run to Dansby Swanson in Game 7 of last year’s NLCS, and today was no exception. He left after five innings, giving up five runs (four of them in the fifth) while only striking out one batter. Matt Beatty and Brandon Marsh carried the Phillies; with two doubles and two RBI each. The Nationals scored a run in each of the first three innings, but would not score again until Mitch Haniger homered in the eighth. By that time it was too late and Philly takes game one.

Game Two: Anthony DeSclafani vs Stephen Strasburg

Strasburg would only go 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, walking four and only striking out one. Both runs came via the long ball, one by Brandon Marsh in the second and the other by Rhys Hopkins in the sixth. The Nationals would score on sac flies from Mitch Haniger and Brandon Drury in the second, and then add on in the fifth with a home run from Haniger. They would carry this lead until the ninth, when Matt Beatty hit a solo home run off of Trevor Rosenthal to tie the game. Then, with two down in the bottom of the ninth and rookie Ky Bush working in just his second major league game, Anthony Rizzo singled and Mitch Haniger (who else?) would go deep (again) to give the Nats a walk off 5-3 victory.

After the game, it was announced that Josiah Gray would be sent to the bullpen, and the rotation would be shuffled accordingly. Felipe Escalona will get the next start, followed by Cade Cavalli. That pushes MacKenzie Gore back one day and then Lucas Giolito will follow in Gray's slot. The Nationals had been using a six man rotation while they sorted out who they wanted their top five starters to be, and Gray's continuing struggles mean he is out for now.

Game Three: Zack Wheeler vs Felipe Escalona
Philadelphia would score in the second when Matt Vierling doubled, and then Washington would counter with a two run home run from Keibert Ruiz and a double play ball from Anthony Rizzo that allowed Luis Garcia to score. The Nats may have suffered their first injury of the year, however, as Gleyber Torres injured his arm diving for a ball in the fourth*. Washington would score again in the fifth when CJ Abrams hit a lead off triple and scired when Brandon Nimmo singled. Bryce Harper drove in a run with a double in the top of the sixth, but Felipe Escalona would finish the inning before hitting the showers. He was electric again, giving up the two runs on six hits, walking no one and striking out six. It wouldn’t be a Nationals game without a home run from Mitch Haniger, and he provided a two-run variety in the eighth to put the game away.

*Gleyber Torres suffered a broken arm and will be out 2-3 months. Brady House will be recalled, and will play shortstop, while CJ Abrams will move to second and Luis Garcia will move to third.

The loss of Torres puts a damper on what was a nice series win for the Nationals. They played well against the division-leading Phillies, despite some pitching issues. The national media is really starting to be drawn to Washington now, with Mitch Haniger’s historic home run spree. We are entering the last week of May and he already has 25 home runs and 45 RBI.

Washington (25-22) will now have a day off before traveling to Boston for two games against the Red Sox (25-22).

I threw my first ever "immaculate inning" last night. Announcers made a big deal about it. Pretty cool.

Cardinals open 2027 season with series win over Brewers

The Cardinals (2-1) got the new year started right with a series win against the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Cardinals won on Opening Day with the help of 4 homeruns and won again on Sunday thanks to a dominant pitching performance by Jameson Taillon and the bullpen. Saturday, the Cardinals bats were dormant as they pushed zero runs across the plate and managed just 3 hits in Reid Detmers debut with the his favorite childhood team.

Nolan Arenado got the final year of his contract off to a storybook start as he hit homeruns in his first 2 at-bats of the season, seeing just 2 pitches.

The Cardinals will now travel to the Bronx for a 3 game series with the Yankees who just swept the Red Sox to begin the season. Then the Cardinals will host the Guardians (missing Julio Urias turn in rotation) for their home opener of the 2027 season.

Mets just came off a pretty successful home stand. We were able to sweep the Marlins, then we dropped two to the Padres but came back from down 7-2 in the 8th to tie it, give the Padres the lead in the 9th and tie it again to send it to extras where we’d walk it off in the finale 11-9.

I’m in the weirdest offensive funk right now. I can’t hit from the right side of the plate at all, Alonso and Alvarez are both hitting below .150 but I’m absolutely crushing the ball from the left side of the plate with inferior players. Brett Baty has been my MVP so far

I intentionally saved over my Opening Day backup file, so I'm committed to this franchise.

Started 5-1, allowing just seven runs in those six games. But the Padres have given me a dose of reality, beating me 8-0 and 5-3 in the first two games of the series. Hoping to at least get a split.

Hitting on HOF with the timing slider at 0 is either the best idea I've ever had or the worst. Albies, Riley and Arcia are above .300; practically everyone else is below the Mendoza line. Acuna is hitting .121. Murphy is 0-for-18. And I'm definitely pressing at the plate with them.

Darvish and Snell were especially tough on me. Hoping to settle in a bit against Martinez and Lugo these next two games.

Cardinals swept by Yankees in the Bronx

The Cardinals (2-4) went to the Bronx only to be swept by the Yankees. The Cardinals were outscored 17-5 in the series. Matthew Liberatore pitched well but got little offensive help in the opening game of the series on Monday. Dakota Hudson got lit up on Tuesday and Jack Flaherty didn't have his best stuff in a showdown against Gerrit Cole.

The Cardinals will be off on Thursday as they head to St.Louis for their home opener against the Guardians.

Tommy Edman to 10 Day IL with forearm injury

The Cardinals will be without All-Star shortstop Tommy Edman for the next week or so as he suffered a forearm injury Monday against the Yankees. He shouldn't be shelved more than the 10 days. Oswald Peraza will take over the everyday shortstop duties while Edman is shelved.

LHP Zach Thompson was recalled from Memphis to fill the vacant roster spot, as the Cardinals broke camp with only 12 pitches.

I'm seeing very high strikeouts and less HRs when watching games.

Cardinals take home opening series against Guardians

The Cardinals (4-5) bounced back from being swept by the Yankees to take 2 games of a 3 game series from the Guardians in St.Louis over the weekend. This was the first home series for the Cardinals this year.

The Cardinals won Friday night as Reid Detmers was brilliant after giving up a lead off homerun. Detmers would get thru 7 innings allowing just the one run on 3 hits and striking out 10. He was supported well by the offense as the Cardinals pushed 4 runs across in 6th and 2 more in the 8th in route to a 7-1 victory.

Saturday Jameson Taillon just couldn't locate issuing 5 walks and giving up 9 hits over just 5 innings. Surprisingly, he only allowed 5 runs despite his struggles, but the offense just had a case of back luck, including being robbed of 2 homeruns in the game, one that would've tied the game in 8th.

Sunday Matthew Liberatore got the ball and got thru 6 innings but got a no decision after leaving with the game tied at 2. In the 8th, Irving Lopez would single home Harrison Bader to put the Cardinals up 3-2, the final tally.

The Cardinals will welcome the Angels to town for a 3 game series before heading back on the road.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Finished the 2023 season for the Oakland Athletics. Ultimately, didn't go well. Finished at 52-110, and unfortunately the final games at the Oakland Coliseum (I'm moving into a new stadium for year 2) was a 4 game sweep at the hands of the Tigers.

But had some good performers towards the end of the season. After really struggling in the 1st Half, Esteury Ruiz went on a tear. Entering July 21st, he had just a .552 ops with 1 HR, but after that day hit .328/.359/.482 with 5 HR. He also ended the season leading the majors with 61 SB. Jordan Diaz at one point in early September had just a .520 OPS and 6 HR, and I had basically written him off as a prospect. But in his final 23 games, he came alive, hitting .365/.443/.682 with 6 HR. And Ramon Laureano, who was a DFA candidate after the trade deadline with a .530 OPS and 3 HR, had an .837 ops and 7 HR in his final 41 games.

League Wide, Ohtani won the AL MVP and Cy Young, with Mookie Betts winning the NL MVP and Noah Syndergaard winning the NL Cy Young. In the AL, the Rays, Rangers, and the surprising Tigers were the Division Champions, with the Blue Jays, Angels, and Astros taking the Wild Cards. In the NL, the Dodgers (league high 110 wins), Braves, and Cardinals took the divisions, and the Mets, Phillies, and Cubs were the Wild Cards. The two teams with the best records met in the NLCS, where the Dodgers beat the Braves in 7 before beating the Astros in 7 in the World Series.

                        Onto the offseason.

I just dropped 2 of 3 vs Oakland. Games 1 and 2 were fun, I lost game 1 8-5 after an 8th inning meltdown when I had a 5-4 lead and I won game 2 9-5. Game three may have been the most frustrating game I’ve ever played, Senga threw 95 pitches in 2 1/3 innings because he couldn’t throw a strike and we lost 4-3. Their four runs game from a third strike that reached base on a ball in the dirt, walking in a run, hit by pitch with the bases loaded and then walking in another run

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the player rating system for franchise needs a complete overhaul? First of all the potential ratings really bothers me. To me potential is a rating that a player has the potential to reach. So why do so many players start out with their potential rating exactly the same as their overall rating or sometimes even much lower than their actual rating? To me NBA 2K has perfected the potential rating with the Max peak potential rating and minimum peak potential rating. Another thing that bothers me is how quickly players ratings fall off. I just started a new franchise and after the first game of the season I went through all 30 teams 40 man rosters and nearly a third of the players had already dropped in rating after one game. Maybe at least have players ratings adjust monthly based on performance not change so quickly and at such a rapid amount that I saw for some players.

Pirates offseason acquisitions come up big in opening series win

Two new 2024 additions for the Pittsburgh Pirates came up big in their 2024 opening day debuts. CJ Cron was simply amazing in his first appearance as the Pirates everyday first baseman. Cron's first three at bats were homeruns the first two came off of Tampa's ace, Shan McClanahan and the thid came as he welcomed Andrew Kittredge into the game in the 6th inning. Cron finished the game 3 for 4 with the three HR and 4 rbi. In the series, he went 5 for 11 after he also had two hits in game two. He did go 0 for 3 in the series finale, a game in which the entire team struggled to get hits.

Game two saw the Pirates almost come back twice in the same game. Tampa got out to an early 4-0 lead but Pittsburgh was able to come back and score four of their own to tie the game on a Ke' Bryan Hayes three run shot in the bottom of the fourth. That was short lived however as Domingo German came in for relief in the 6th inning and promptly allowed three straight hits to include a three run HR for Francisco Mejia. The Pirates got two back in the bottom half of the inning but past that, neither team would score as Tampa took the game two victory 7-6.

Game three saw great starting pitching from both Tyler Glasnow of the Rays and Roansy Contreras of the Pirates. Glasnow lasted just five innings due to pitch count but allowed just 3 hits, no runs while he struck out 5.

Contreras went seven, allowed 5 hits, no runs and struck out 7.

The game ended with a walk off one run shot by Rodolfo Castro off of Jimmy Herget in the bottom of the 9th inning. In total, Tampa had just five hits and Pittsburgh had just 4.

The early season will continue as Pittsburgh remains home against a team that according to experts are the worst team in the majors. The Washington Nationals were ranked #30 out of 30 in the preseason power rankings and didnt do much to improve their team in the offseason.

I went after Ohtani but he signed with the Twins on a 9 year deal. The twins also got Freddie Freeman from the Dodgers in a trade. George Springer was traded to the Guardians and Ryan Pressly was traded by the Astros to the Mariners in exchange for Andres Munoz.
