To me NBA 2K has perfected the potential rating with the Max peak potential rating and minimum peak potential rating. Another thing that bothers me is how quickly players ratings fall off. I just started a new franchise and after the first game of the season I went through all 30 teams 40 man rosters and nearly a third of the players had already dropped in rating after one game. Maybe at least have players ratings adjust monthly based on performance not change so quickly and at such a rapid amount that I saw for some players.

I think potential should determine how fast a player develops or how slowly they regress. I don't really love the system where it just works as a cap.

But I do think the ratings need a lot of work. For one, I think prospects, especially draft picks and low level players, should have much lower overalls, but also need to develop much faster to compensate.

Cardinals drop series to Angels as pitching

The Cardinals (5-7) dropped two games of a three-game series to the Angels in St.Louis to begin the week. Through the first 12 games of the year, the Cardinals look unbalanced in the lineup for whatever reason and pitching has been inconsistent.

Dakota Hudson got lit up on Monday night, as he didn't get to the 5th inning. Hudson left after giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, including 3 home runs. He has 2 starts completing just 8.1 innings having given up 19 hits, 13 runs and 4 home runs. The offense played well, but the Cardinals pitching staff was overwhelmed as the Angels won 12-6.

Tuesday night saw a game that featured Jack Flaherty and Jose Suarez both take no-hitters into the 6th inning. Mike Trout broke up Flaherty's no-no with a single in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Brendan Donovan broke up Suarez's bid with a double in the gap. Those would be the only hits of the game for both teams, as the Cardinals won the game 1-0 thanks to a Jordan Walker, walk off sac fly that scored Harrison Bader who walked, reached 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Ivan Herrera, reached third on a wild pitch and then eventually scored on the sac fly.

Wednesday afternoon saw Reid Detmers face his old teammates, and they got the best of him hitting 3 solo home runs in route to a 4-2 win as the offense just couldn't get a timely hit. Twice the Cardinals had lead off doubles get stranded and failed to score with the bases loaded and 1 out in both the 7th and 8th innings. Frustrating day. Detmers has surrendered 5 long balls in just 19.1 innings of work this year, a concern to the staff.

The Cardinals will now travel north for a 4 game weekend series with the Cubs.

          Cardinals woes continue in Chicago

The Cardinals (6-10) continue to struggle to play consistent baseball as they dropped 3 of 4 to the Cubs over the weekend in Chicago. After winning Thursday's series opener, the Cardinals lost 3 straight.

And its not pitching that is the bearer of the bad news, but moreso the Cards inability to drive in runs. They get guys on, but simply can't get them in. Over the last 2 games, Nolan Arenado left 11 men on base himself. Something you just can't have at the cleanup spot.

The lone win on Thursday was with the Cardinals winning 5-1 as Jameson Taillon was great on the mound. The Cardinals wouldn't score five runs in the final 3 games of the series combined, despite averaging 8 hits per game.

The Cardinals will now take a 3 day trip out west, odd scheduling, to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles before returning home.

Cardinals sweep Dodgers in Los Angeles

The Cardinals (9-10) swept the Dodgers in Los Angeles to begin the week. The Cardinals played easily their most consistent series of the young season in LA.

Reid Detmers, Jameson Taillon, and Matthew Liberatore all had great starts that saw them each get thru at least 6 innings. The bullpen was solid in relief yielding a single run in the series, and the bats were getting hits with runners on base. Nolan Arenado who struggled in Chicago, had 5 hits in 9 at-bats with a homerun and 8 RBIs during the two games he played in the series.

The only gray cloud in the series was Nolan Gorman getting injured Monday with a pulled hamstring that landed him on the 10 Day IL, but he'll likely miss two weeks. Irving Lopez was recalled from Memphis to take his spot. The lineup got a shift with Jordan Walker moving from DH to 1B and Oswald Peraza now playing 2nd base until Gorman returns.

The Cardinals will now head home for a 4 game weekend series against the Brewers.

              2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: Cade Cavalli (0-2, 5.80) vs James Paxton (3-0, 3.15)
The Nationals would get the bases loaded with nobody out in the first but could only get one run across, via a Brandon Drury single. Paxton would leave in the top of the third with pain in his hand, and this could be a major blow to the Red Sox*. Boston would tie the game in third when Xander Bogaerts hit into a double play, and they would then take the lead when Giancarlo Stanton hit a sac fly in the sixth. Cade Cavalli, despite not getting the win, pitched fantastic. He went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits, and striking out four. The Sox would send out Drew Steckenrider in the seventh, and he would promptly give up the lead. Brandon Drury tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run that nearly cleared the Monstah…er, Monster. Mitch Haniger would follow and one-upped Drury by clearing said Monstah, because why not. Boston would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when rookie Curtis Mead doubled, and then take the lead on a base hit from Alex Verdugo

*James Paxton looks to miss 1-6 days with a bruised hand, which is the best possible news for Boston fans.

Game Two: MacKenzie Gore (3-2, 6.23) vs Michael Wacha (6-0, 1.14)
The Red Sox scored first with a two out single from Curtis Mead in the bottom of the second. They would score another run in the third when Brady House let a ball go right through his glove, allowing Xander Bogaerts to score from second. Somehow House was not given an error on the play, but it was a ground ball hit right at him and should have been a routine play to end the inning. The Nationals rallied in the sixth: CJ Abrams reached on an infield single, and then Luis Garcia would hit a triple, mostly due in part to the fact that Giancarlo Stanton got a horrible jump on the ball and had to field it in the triangle area of the outfield. Andrew Vaughn would follow with an RBI knock, and Mitch Haniger would then hit a ground ball that would have been either a double play or a fielder’s choice but Trevor Story airmailed the throw, allowing Haniger to go to second. Keibert Ruiz would take advantage of the miscue and hit a double to center to give Washington the lead. This ended what had been another great start for Michael Wacha, who was looking to keep his undefeated record intact. The Nationals’ power came through in the eighth: Luis Garcia and Andrew Vaughn would single before Mitch Haniger was given a cookie on a 3-1 count and hit his 27th home run over the Green Monster. Lane Thomas would hit a solo home a few batters later, giving the Nationals a 7-2 lead.

The Nationals (26-23) continue to play winning ball on the road. They are now 12-8 in road games (14-15 at home), and are trending in the right direction. The NL East looks to be very tight again this year, with only 3.5 games separating the Braves (29-22) and the Marlins (25-25).

Washington will have an off day before a three game series against the Phillies (27-22) in Philadelphia followed by a three game series in San Francisco (24-25) before coming home to play the Dodgers (32-17) without an off day in between the series. Not exactly a favorable schedule.

I'm starting to become a littler concerned about my franchise...as fun as it is seeing Mitch Haniger hit a home run every game, I really want to keep things realistic. I'm entering the last week of May and he already has 27 home runs. I'm hoping the law of averages catches up to him, because I really don't want to have a season with Mitch Haniger hitting 72 home runs. Nothing against him, I know he can hit a lot of home runs, but this is absurd,

Holy Cripes that's a lot of HR's. I would say if you're not seeing way high HR totals from the rest of your team, then just have fun with it and have it be some crazy MLB happening. If you go back in history there HAVE been guys who went on 1 or 2 month insane home run tears.

I 100% agree with this advice. I mean, Barry Bonds hit 28 through May in 2001...and while Haniger is no Bonds, it's not SO far removed from precedent that I'd be "worried".

This game also has a funny tendency of slapping you back just as soon as you think something is amiss too.

I looked it up for giggles and yeah guys like Yelich, Belle, Encarnacion, and a few more, along with the greats like Griffey, Bonds, Pujols etc have had stretches like this. Roll with it, make it a story line. Like Josh said, cold streak might be imminent.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

I went into my A's offseason not intending to do much. Build a better bullpen (it was baaaad in 2023), sign a veteran SS to a short term deal, and basically let my young guys grow into the team. My biggest goal for 2024 was to be younger and be moving in a positive direction.

So, I did that. I signed Brandon Crawford to play SS, and ended up adding Craig Kimbrel, Aroldis Chapman, and Jordan Hicks to the bullpen. And I signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to be a utility guy (his ability to play catcher gives me more piece of mind playing Langeliers and Soderstrom together). But then I started going a little nuts. I added Marek Minarik to the bullpen as well. Then I signed Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto to join the rotation and Munetaka Murakami to be a middle of the order bat.

Free Agent spending seems to be a lot more tempered in this year's game. Only 1 player got a $100 million contract (In a shocker, Ohtani to the Tigers for 10 years, $350 million). I thought it might be budget issues, but one one team has less than $25 million available budget; the Mets are $57 million over budget, and despite this gave out the second biggest contract in a 4 year, $88 million pact with Julio Urias (they're spending $132 million on starting pitching alone, more than 11 teams have spent on their entire rosters). Mets are the only team in the tax. The Dodgers are 14th in Payroll. Clayton Kershaw is the only other player to even get $20 million AAV (a 1 year deal for $24.8 million with the Rays). The World Series Champions look like they'll take a notable step back this year.

For sure. Anthony Rizzo has 16 or 17, but most of them came in bunches in the first few weeks of the season and he has cooled off some.

Speaking of Bonds, the thought has crossed my mind of Haniger "testing positive" or something, but I just can't get myself to do that. I mean if the real life Haniger was caught cheating, it would be different. But for now he's just going to stay hot.

Cardinals split 4 game series with Brewers in St.Louis

The Cardinals (11-12) split a 4 game series with the Brewers in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals won Thursday night and then Sunday afternoon.

Its hard to put a finger on a pulse with this team and what "holes" it has and what changes (roster, lineup, batting lineup, pitching, etc) may need to be made to help this team reach is best version of itself. Right now, things are all over the place not only between the hitting and pitching, but player to player. Nolan Arenado is struggling now, Jordan Walker continues to disappoint at the plate, Harrison Bader doesn't seem himself after last year's devasting knee injury, etc..

Injuries this year aren't helping either as Tommy Edman was gone for a period of time and the club is without Nolan Gorman, although he should be back this week.

Its only mid/late April so plenty of time for things to click, but right now this team is everything but consistent in any facet of the game.

Up next the Cardinals will be off Monday before the Padres come to town for a 3 game mid week set.

Cardinals sweep Padres for their 8th win in last 10 games

The Cardinals (14-12) swept the Padres in a 3 game series in St.Louis and have now won 8 of their last 10 games.

The Cardinals who seem to be all over the place as a club, found some stability the past week or so as they have won 8 of their last 10 games after sweeping the Dodgers, splitting a 4 game series with the Brewers, and now sweeping the Padres. This comes as a pleasant surprise as the Cardinals still aren't clicking on all cylinders, as O'Neill, Walker, and Bader continue to struggle in the lineup, and the pitching staff continues to have trouble putting 9 solid innings together in any given game.

Still, as the month of April comes to a close, its good to see the club finding ways to win a ballgame while waiting for some bats/arms to catchup.

The Cardinals are back on the road as they travel to Atlanta for a 3 game weekend series with the Braves, and then will head north of the border to face the Blue Jays as they close out the month of April.

Nolan Gorman activated from 10 Day IL

The Cardinals got good news for their road trip as Nolan Gorman was activated from the 10 day IL and will join the club in Atlanta. Gorman has been one of the more consistent bats in the lineup, before being shelved with a hamstring injury.

Joshua Baez was optioned to Memphis to make room on the roster.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
