Re: MLB the Show 25 The Mets

Mets planning to use Acuna a lot this spring at 3B so Veintos can get some time at DH, Baty at 2B though I can not see him playing much over McNeil. Also Jett Williams a lot in CF. Mauricio not going to likely sniff the bigs until June

And keep an eye out on Jonah Tong. Not sure he even sniffs the pros this year but this kid has some electric stuff. He has been baffling hitters at Port St Lucie the last few days. I hope they keep him and avoid trading him. People talk about Sproat but this kid is legit.

Drew Smith back to the Mets on a 1 year deal with an option. Good to add some bullpen depth

I read he’s out for 25 but expected back in 26.

Yes sir looks that way, Still good value only paying him 1 million this year with a chance he could return late and 2 million if he gets his option picked up for 2026. I always liked Smith. A few years back he looked like our future closer then injuries and so so seasons derailed that. I hope he recovers

With Montas down until mid May at the earliest. Can we please just trade for Cease or something. I really have no interest in watching Megill, Blackburn or Canning pitch on a regular basis

No reason to give up the farm for Cease when he’s just going to walk at the end of the year. Canning is pretty washed, but Megill and Blackburn pitched well last year for the most part. I’d honestly rather go pickup Quintana again for cheap for one year if needed than trade prospects for Cease.

I'll bat him before. I make a somewhat unconventional lineup, I don't like bunching my power bats all together, I like someone between that will get on base. Depending on McNeil's ratings I might do something like Lindor McNeil Soto Nimmo Alonso although I don't like the three lefties in a row. I wouldn't be opposed to leading off with Soto but his plate discipline is of no use to me since I hack away at anything near the plate

Likely third. I like Nimmo leadoff, Lindor 2, Soto 3 and Alonso 4, Veintos 5

Re: MLB the Show 25 The Mets

I'm starting become concerned with Soto's OF defense. I know I'm probably panicking way too soon, but when I start playing MLBTS 25 Friday and I see his fielding attribute rating isn't up to standard (my standard lol) I'm thinking of playing him half the time at DH and the other half at First. Do the same with Alonso, half the time at First and the other half at DH. My question is, would Soto be less liable at First than he would be in the OF? And also, maybe his arm strength too strong to waste at First (unless his fielding attribute to low).

If I do play Soto at First, I would obviously change his primary to First and his secondary to LF/RF, so I'm not concerned about him playing out of position at First. I just don't want him being a liability in the OF no matter how well he bats at the plate.

                        Thoughts?

Soto at DH sometimes is definitely a good idea. Putting him at first is an experiment as well. Over the course of a 162 game season you can play him 70-80 games in the OF 30-40 at the DH and the rest at 1st base. The baseball season allows you a lot of different options.

Another issue with the Mets is the starting pitching. We still need another solid starter and I am still disappointed that we didn't sign another top flight starter.

Yeah, I look at Soto's body type and it screams firstbase. I thought the same with JD Martinez last year and played about a dozen games in 24 with him at First. I wasn't going to waste my time with him in the OF because of his weak arm. At least Soto has a strong enough arm to be OF, whatever his fielding shortcomings may be.

He’ll never play first. Soto will be an OF for the next 3-4 years and then make the move to DH. He’s a bit faster than he gets credit for, also while his defense isn’t great, it’s not terrible yet. His reaction time can use some work, but if playing in RF he’ll be fine. Once he slows down a little, then he’ll move to DH since his bat is too good and even though 1B is thought of as a non-strenuous position, I feel like the Mets wouldn’t want to waste him there with the risk of getting hurt in the field.

Yeah, I was looking thru the Best Free Agents Still Available thread a few days ago and I see Kyle Gibson is still unsigned but I'll likely pass him up. However, I definitely am going to try to sign Phil Maton during my 2025 spring training for my bullpen and quite possibly David Robertson too.

And I definitely wouldn't expect him to move to the infield any time soon. I'd think if it did happen, it would be more like Bryce Harper and he move to First when he's much older. Kinda surprised the Phillies don't play Harper strictly at DH. I also wouldn't think Soto would play firstbase until long after Alonso (if, big if) decides to leave NY. Still, in my franchise, if Soto's fielding defense rating falls into the fifties, I'll definitely move him to first. That's a lot easier decision on my part than it would be the IRL Mets.
