Re: why did you make the jump to the show?

It's fitting that my post follows Knight's, as he (or she? I don't want to assume here) is one of my reasons for finally making the jump. If anybody else posts during my little essay here, I'm going to be mad!

I've never been a diehard baseball video game guy, just the occasional game among the classics growing up (Tone LaRussa's Ultimate Baseball on PC, some really random game where you could hit the ball out of a space ballpark on NES) until I went to college. First, it was Microsoft Baseball 2000 (I didn't research, it had Nomar on the cover, sold!). That series died (probably a good thing), so I went without for a couple of years, until High Heat came out. That was my first experience with mods, and it was a great experience for me. Once High Heat died, it was MVP 05 for me. I couldn't not buy a baseball game after my Red Sox finally won it all, naturally.

So, I loved MVP 05, and I even bought MVP NCAA 2006. Once MVP lost MLB, and then half-assed MVP NCAA, I gave up altogether on baseball video games. I would fire up MVP NCAA when I got a baseball video game craving, as the shorter season made it more palatable to me in my working years.

I guess you could say that my jump has been a 3-step process.

The first step was my purchase of a PS3. I bought it mostly because I had a PS2 as my only gaming console, and I wanted to still be able to play my old games like the MVP games. The Blu-Ray player was a pleasant bonus that I have enjoyed greatly, and the NCAA Football series has been great, but backwards compatibility was a big deal.

The second step was MLB Network. Specifically, Ken Burns' Baseball (or Ken Burns's Baseball, according to the network) and the first few innings, with all of the classic old players like Cobb, Wagner, and Walter Johnson. That made me want to go play with some HOF players, so I fired up MVP 05 again. Unfortunately, that game had so few HOFers (no Ted Williams? GFU!) that it was an ultimately unsatisfying experience, so I started researching to see what was out there for the next-gen MLB games.

The third step was this forum, and most specifically, Knight165. After coming back to my go-to forum for game comparisons (been coming here since I started seeking Owner Mode tips for MVP 05 back when it first came out), I did some surfing and came to the conclusion that MLB: The Show was the vastly superior game, particularly for Franchise mode players, which is my mode of preference when I'm not feeling nostalgic for HOFers. So, after picking the game, I went neck-deep into the forums to see if I could find any mention of HOFers in the game, or rosters dealing with HOFers. Imagine my pleasure at finding Knight's threads about all-time players for the previous years of the show...and then my disappointment that the result was one single season's all-time team, not the best players throughout the game of all time. This is in no way a slight towards Knight's magnificent work, it just wasn't what I was searching for. Still, before I gave up (I only buy two video games a year - NCAA Football and *something else*, and I could always find another #2 of some sort out there), I PMed Knight to ask if s/he knew of any rosters that might feature the best players of all time for every franchise, not just specific years. I rejoiced when told that Knight is going to do BOTH kinds of rosters this year! Thus, I now had the superior game that was going to have the features I wanted, AND the rosters that I have been seeking.

In summary, Sony, Knight deserves a little kickback for our PM conversation, because he's made you about $60...well, unless I get fired in April. The decision has been made, it's just a matter of when I get the game (which depends on my job situation and the status of the rosters).

Also, I think that if I painstakingly set every lineup on every level of my system and fill every roster slot in MVP 05 only to have the CPU auto-sort 4-5 of my A-level players into oblivion and completely screw up my MLB-AAA-AA rosters so that I have to write everything down to try to put things back together AGAIN, I may become a danger to myself, my spouse, and our kitten. So that makes the jump a little easier, too.

Well, I went to Gamestop one day and they had MLB 2006 playing, so I hopped on it for a minute, and I just remember thinking "Holy ****, I have to have this!" What really sold me was just how crazy smooth the animations were.

A few weeks later I bought a PS2 and my first SCEA MLB title

      Mine is similar.

I loved MVP 04, and obviously '05 even more. Bought it for the PC, and was hooked.

Then the 360 comes along, and the early shots of 2K6 got me buzzing (since 2K5 was pretty good on the regular Xbox). So it was a first day purchase for me (at Wal-Mart), unfortunately I was duped into the picture deception (looked nothing like the screenshots) they used. The game was atrocious. It was so bad, that I brought it back the same day, and they told me even exchange only.

So I had a plan, I needed my console baseball fix. I had MLB06 on the PSP and was stunned at how much better it was than the tripe 2K put out on the 360. So I went down to EBGames and told them, "if you give me full credit, I will purchase MLB06 and a brand new slim PS2". They agreed and the rest is history.

I did not initially get a PS3 yet, since 2K7 was leaps and bounds better than 2K6, and held me over enough to not get the PSP version of MLB07 or the PS2 version. I was excited for the series, and they seemed to be on the right track. Then came 2K8. And also the phenominal graphics of MLB08.

I wanted 2K8 to be good, so much so I was accused of being a 2K homer on here, and a Show *****. Funny how I am now a Show homer to people and a 2K ***** (by the 2K police). Anyhow, after watching the vids of 08 on here, and just reading thread after thread praising it (and holding off on buying 2K8 from all the negativity on that forum)... I ran into the store, they had 08 and 2K8 running, played 2K8 for 30 minutes, then The Show for 5 minutes... walked out with a PS3 and The Show 08.

And only 7 days left till '09.

well i got a PS3 because my XBOX 360 broke like 4 times, and i wanted a BluRay player and a better overall system... and i saw last year that 2K8 was being sold on PS3, so i picked it up and took it back to the store 30 mins later, idk if it was the copy i had but for PS3 last year 2K8 was really glitchy and downright bad, but like i said i got the show, and havent turned back since.. such a great sports franchise...

I have always been a playstation fan and been playing MLB 06 and 07 on ps2. But when next gen came along I had the chance to get a free xbox 360, so I gladly took it and still love my 360. But the hype for The Show 08 and now 09, forced me to return to my roots and I got a ps3 almost 2 weeks ago.

Re: why did you make the jump to the show?

Well, it's a little complicated. I started out with ASB02 in baseball, which was an awkward time to become a fan of the game of baseball to begin with. However, as I would soon find out, it was a great time for innovation in baseball video games, and ASB almost always headed the pack.

You can't talk about this time frame without mentioning some other titles:

            MVP
            High Heat 2004
            World Series Baseball 2k3

and having fond memories of them as well. I know I have fond memories in particular of MVP and World Series. Regardless, my favorite franchise was always All Star Baseball, and I absolutely adored the way that Acclaim really made the fans a part of the process, especially on these forums. We saw things from Acclaim in ASB 03-05 that had simply never been done before, some which still haven't been done since, to the dismay of MANY fans out there.

I'm STILL waiting to get my Expansion modes back! What happened here? a fan favorite of the ASB series, someone must have just dropped the ball and forgotten all about it, because expansion modes were some of the most innovative and creative additions to franchise that had ever been done! MORE innovative even than anything that SCEA has managed to come up with!

To be honest, you look at a lot of what SCEA has come up with and you can link it directly back to an All Star Baseball title, because they did it first. ASB CREATED the Franchise mode, they made Franchise what it is.

Even the addition of customiseable soundtracks was added first into ASB05 for the Xbox, well before MLB brought it in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not chastising SCEA, I LOVE YOU GUYS! SCEA brought back everything I ever expected from a game, and they brought it back from the relative GRAVE as Acclaim has long since gone under as a developer. However, you could tell just from the gameplay in the last few years that they brought some of the developers who worked on ASB in for MLB: The Show. I think that, more than anything has completely sold me on The Show and made it a perennial purchase every spring. After ASB, I resorted to MVP. After MVP, the devil went down to georgia and he was lookin' for an MLBPA license to steal.

I've always been attached to the most innovative developers when it comes to baseball games. The team who's willing to give it their all and give me a game that offers the most creative license as well as the most fun and realism, that's the team that gets my money, my respect, and my thanks. Honestly, I end up putting several hundreds of hours, if not thousands of hours into these games, and it's always nice to not have to be yelling at a game for it's inconsistencies, or poking fun at silly mistakes. Immersion is the most important factor, and if you can get that right, then you can make a game that people will want to play -- The Show is that game.

I secretly wish that ASB was still out there, but The Show is the next best thing, and the Devs at SCEA have proven themselves time and again to be devoted to the immersion factor so much that they have gained my trust.

2k Sports is like a player who hits a lot of home runs and gets injured a lot.....all flash, no bang. SCEA is the guy who toughs it out hitting for a decent average and just loves to play the game, sees it for what it is: just plain fun.

After Acclaim went under and no more ASB rented MVP and said you're kidding. Took a chance and bought The Show without trying it out first. Impressed ever since.

I played 07 the show on PS2 and I hated it, then I bought a PS3 and got 2k7, then 2k8 and now I am back and I don't think I will go back to 2k. The Show has took a major step forward this year.

I "made the jump" after the demise of Acclaims ASB (great game).....I purchased and played every baseball game that was available at the time.....when The Show came out, it instantly became my game of choice.....best sports game on the shelves IMO.

I made the jump to MLB 09 The Show because I finally had enough money to buy a PS3! Another reason was the fact that I got sick and tired of playing bug filled 2K baseball games.
