Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

The cpu doesn't seem to be stealing to many bases at for me, are you guys noticing this?
If so what can be done to help. I play on all-star.

Thanks for your help, "What a game"

There are legends in FA pool they are there in case people want to use them. They disappear when you start a franchise and are not used.
What issue are you having moving players? I moved a couple from AAA to major and vice versa with no issues.

Sorry you're having problems but wow if you're disappointed in this game...

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

Well, after just two games, I am quite happy. I played as the Indians against the Yankees @ Yankee Stadium. I figured I would try legend mode, default out. I am not sure if I will stay on the level, but it seemed more than fair...a ton of concentration needed.

Top first, I have an epic 12 pitch AB with Sizemore against CC. I walked. For some reason, that made me smile that my first AB with the new game was a walk. CC had control problems and was at 90 pitches through 6. Carmona had his sinker working and the Yanks were pounding the ball into the ground. Finally, the Yanks exploded for 5 runs (AROD 2 run homer, Posada, base clearing double)in the 7th...my fault, I didn't have anyone up, Perez came in and finally shut the door. My lone run came on an Asdrubal Cabrera homerun that barely got out of the yard.

2nd game--I played as the Mets vs Pirates @ Citi Field. I struggled with Johan, but held the Pirates to 2 runs through 6 on 102 pitches--ump had a tight zone. I tied the game on a David Wright double, but Sean Green blew the game by walking Freddy Sanchez, a Jack Wilson sack bunt, and a Nate McClouth fly ball that Fernando Tatis dropped in RF. 3-2 loss.

General impressions--Hit variety was outstanding. From bloopers, bleeders, to line drives, to mammoth HR. It's the best the series has been. Legend mode seems fair, but I don't know if I can win on it...will keep trying before starting a franchise. Umpire personalities were obvious and well done. Overall, it seems more fun than last year and a nice upgrade. Will be back with more after more time with the game.

You have to scroll through every one of them to get down to the real free agents to fix the rosters. It's very annoying.

I can't seem to find a way to see who exactly is on what roster and every time you add a player to a team, you have to add him to the 40 man. It's just kind of confusing.

Maybe it's me because I have been extremely tired and stressed out lately. It's just not all that I expected, but I'm sure that will change.

The slowdown drives me insane too. They made the pitch meter too hard to see as well. Did I mention the roster downloads don't work?

Sorry...I know they will fix it.

I had 4 walks to that point and picked up 2 more for 6 total in the game. Im playing on legend, havent touched sliders, guess pitch is on. I only struck out 3 times against smoltz, but ended up with 11 in 14 innings (that was my achilles heel last year, struck out 9-11 times a games)

Not understanding what you mean. Go to trades (I think thats it) and scroll the team on the right until you get to FA's

Scroll to the right when looking at roster and it will say MLB/AAA/AA etc... to let you know what squad they are on.

                  Alright, let's skin this bitch:

                  -roster update doesn't work.
Shame, I know. I don't think we can fault the game itself for this one, but more so it's dependent on the guys handling the servers. It's all technical, I suppose. I just hope it gets up really soon.

-roster vault doesn't work for me.
Again, don't think this is a problem coded in the game as much as it is an online issue. We'll see what they can get up soon.

-custom walkup music for RttS player doesn't work or I can't get it to.
That's not good. I don't play RttS, but hopefully someone can find a solution for you. I know people are having all kinds of trouble doing custom music in this game (not just for RttS). I on the other hand have had zero problems with it.

-lots of slowdown in exhibition against the CPU
Care to elaborate? Do you mean the game pace is slow, or you run into framerate issues? If it's framerate, the only really noticeable instance of this is in night games when there is a hit down the line that makes the fielding camera take about a 45 degree swivel. Then aside from replays and cut scenes going at a constant 30 FPS, everything else seems like a decent 60. I've noticed some framerate stutters with the meter sometimes when the scoreboard is acting up and showing some graphic, but again... nothing that detracts from play.

-it seems kind of complicated to add players to rosters.
I don't really see this as a "bug" (assuming you're listing out the things in this game that you felt were buggy), but the only real issue I have is that it doesn't too specifically separate major leaguers for minor leaguers, so if I wanted to move Griffey to the Mariners, I want to change him for the lowest rated majors outfielder but can't tell which one it is.

It's probably easier than I'm making it out to be (and you as well), but in the end I'm not sure how this is a "bug" per se, more so a complication if anything.

-why are there legends in the FA pool?
It kind of irked me as well, but supposedly they don't show up in franchise mode (maybe there's an option for on/off?). I guess the simple answer is that people asked for them and SCEA likes to make us happy, which makes me happy in the end.

Though I personally don't care for Legends.

I think this is the best baseball franchise ever, but 2 days of playing has left me a little upset.
It's probably just natural; you take the small negatives that you had for the past year's game and it's etched into your mind unconsciously so that when you see it this year it sticks out like a sore thumb.

And as I said, most of these aren't really hard-coded "bugs," but are more or less things that are external (online), possibly not real (I want to hear more about this RttS custom music thing) or simply subjective. An objective bug, as I've stated in the Bugs/Glitches thread, is that part of a wall at AT&T Park is coded so that when it hits off of it, it's a home run. There's no opinion I have about it and it is not discretionary on my part at all. It is something that the developers didn't intend to have in the game and an online server fix won't do anything for it either.

The only reason I commented the way I did was because of the term that you used to describe the negatives, calling it "buggy." I think for lack of a better word people will understand what you mean, but I just hope you understand what you're looking at may not be "bugs" at all. The slowdown and RttS things may be valid gripes and the online stuff is valid, but again I wouldn't hold it against the game itself.

I just hope you stick to it though man. This game really is awesome!

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

I think the game is so much better than the demo. Maybe it's me but everything seemed sharper. I played just one game

Hit variety was great ... had doubles down the line and in the gap. Though a few too many tappers between pitchers mound and home plate.

Coco Crisp dove for a ball in front of him and missed! It rolled to the wall for a triple.

I did the same thing with Carlos Quentin (twice) on in-between liners and his momentum would cause him to tumble over. Last year, the computer would have made that really difficult catch for me.

I'm hooked. I dreamt about the game.

I just played an excellent game at Progressive Field. Indians(me) vs Rays. Cliff Lee was a monster in this game, he went 8 innings striking out 6. I hit a solo shot off of Kazmir with Victor Martinez, then got an RBI single from Choo but both runs came in the first 2 innings. I brought in Kerry Wood after Cliff Lee gave up a lead off single in the 9th. Then Pat Burrell hit an RBI double past the out stretched glove of Ben Francisco. The tying run was at 2nd but Wood got Gabe Kapler to ground out. I love this game.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

I played my first full game last night, it was pretty intense. I was the Royals at home against the Indians, I started off quick with a 1-0 lead then the Indians came back and lead 2-1 for a while, in about the 5th inning I got a fastball up in the zone and Olivo CRUSHED it over the center field wall. That is where the score stayed, and no one got any offense going until the bottom of the 12th I already had 2 outs and a man at 2nd, well Butler was up to bat and I guessed the pitch, however I got my timing wrong and grounded to short, I was about to set the controller down and then there was a throwing error at 1st and my guy made it home, walk off single on an error.

The annoucer even said something like "that's not how you want to see a game end" but a win is a win!

Do you use the L- stick to aim or are you a swing only guy just pressing X? I would love to use the L stick but I have great difficulty aiming it AND judging balls and strikes, so I end up swinging at most everything.

Looks like I haven't hit the end of your exchanges (jpup) with others so I could understand a bit more. Looks like hopefully you're getting why some things are the way they are.

And Skyboxer, thanks for the tip on scrolling to the right. I still wish there were another way to sort... but even with this only option, as I was saying before, it's not really a "bug" so to speak, more of a personal (albeit perhaps limited) preference by the developers, even if they wanted to do something more with it.

Also, people are allowed to be unimpressed with a game. I [subjectively] don't know how anyone could ever find a downside in their efforts in this game and building an ever so strong community here (I mean they even put our names in the audio database for Christ's sake!), but give me a McDonald's double cheeseburger over a Sirloin Burger at Le Tub eight days a week. Taste is taste.
