Yeah, and I think that's exactly why a lot of us have a problem.

I am at 1st base, and a fly ball at the gap is sent to the left center. The camera turns around and I keep going to 2nd. I'm about 1ft away from 2nd, the LF makes a great shoestring catch, does a double gainer and throws me out as I am halfway between 1st and 2nd deciding which way the camera is facing so I can choose a direction to push. My guy literally turns to 1st, then 2nd, then 1st as I couldn't make up my mind.

On a flyout to CF with the camera facing me tagging up 2nd with the CF in almost a straight line behind me, I've tried left it would not advance. I have to press up very deliberately. That one gave me a good headscratch and almost didn't make it to 3rd. According to the camera "rules", I should be pushing left as 3rd base is to the left of me. This has happened to me twice before I figured out to push up instead.

I hope more games will help, but I am almost at the 100 game mark in RTTS and it has been a nightmare trying to run bases. I am almost at the point of choosing automatic baserunning since I am making the dumbest running mistakes known to pro baseball.

      Hope this helps
Okay, let me articulate just exactly why this is a huge flaw. Not every situation warrants the continuation of running.

For instance, if you hit a ball far enough into the outfield, you can't tell whether the outfielders have a good chance of getting to it or not, so you don't want to go too far from the base or you might be picked off later.

The problem with the camera relative change while on the base paths is that your brain is telling you to press one direction to run one way, and the other to run the other way; however, when the rules change completely 180 degrees for those controls in the MIDDLE of a play, the brain can't always catch up and make up for it, and thusly a LOT of mistakes are going to be made. I'm sure people could TEACH themselves to compensate for the problem, but the question here is -- after paying $60 for a game, why should anyone have to compensate for a problem like this?

I understand nobody can catch everything in development, and I also understand how difficult, strenuous, and tiring the task is. However, this is most definitely not an issue of user error, and deserves at least a little serious consideration for patching up, if at all possible. If not, it is in my opinion only a minor blemish on an otherwise fantastic game.

Heh, I just wanted to make sure it was understood that I'm not trying to chastise anyone, I just think this isn't something that should be denied and/or covered up.

        Re: Problems with RTTS baserunning

I tired to play about 10 games last night in RTTS, and it was a blast EXCEPT for the running aspect. I sort of got used to the controls, but I was having a problem stopping on a particular base when I wanted too b/c it was hard to judge when to stop. I ended up being tagged out roughly 9 times due to running through the base. This game has a great feel, but the base running is killing the fun aspect for me. I ALMOST want to NOT get on base, just so i dont have to worry about running...but thats a third of the game in my opnion.

I'm just hoping something can be done here. If not, then I'm reserving hope that I can adjust to the controls, but after playing the game a particular way for a whole year, it's going to take awhile to change my thought proces in terms of running.

Excellent game otherwise. Probably will be the best sports game I have played up to this yr as long as I can get used to the runing controls.

          Re: Problems with RTTS baserunning

Another thing that annoys me is how close the camera is to your baserunner. Last year, you could zoom out for a better view. This was very useful, especially when on second so that you could keep an eye on the shortstop or second baseman. As is, it's difficult to get a lead off of second base because once the pitcher makes his pick-off move, it's nearly impossible to get back (no, I am not taking dangerous leads). Last year there was also a button flash telling you to go back, but I haven't noticed that this year.

Anyone else have this issue, or is there a way to zoom out while on the basepaths?

I'd like to at least have the option to use last year's baserunning controls. Why did they make 'classic' available for everything but RTTS? If it's not broke, don't fix it. Introducing something new is fine, but keep the old tried n' true in place until all the issues are worked out. Right now, baserunning in RTTS is a very uncertain adventure. Nothing is more frustrating than 'boneheaded' baserunning errors (because of the controls) that should never happen - either in a game or in real life.

I love the game, but this aspect of it is very disappointing.

Please give us the old control back in a patch. People like me bought the game because we love the RTTS mode so much but the running aspect is killing the mode. Russell please find out if the old controls can be made into an option in a patch.

I do dislike how close the camera is to your player while on the bases or in the field.

                Re: Problems with RTTS baserunning

I'm brand new to The Show this year, so I have no frame of reference for how the controls used to work, but I just wanted to throw my hat in with those who are having HUGE issues with the baserunning. This is the main thing that is keeping me from enjoying RTTS, because every time I get on base or try to leg out extra bases, I will inevitably get turned around somehow and get tagged out. This is terribly frustrating, especially when it sounds like it used to be much simpler with the previous control scheme.

This, and the fact that quite frequently my first baseman will not run all the way to first until AFTER I catch the ball even though I'm telling him to, are the main things that are preventing me from enjoying RTTS as much as I thought I would. I'm considering just turning off fielding and baserunning and just focusing on hitting, but I REALLY don't want to do that. I want to be able to enjoy ALL aspects of this mode, but currently, I just can't. Here's to hoping that something can be done about these issues.

                  Re: Problems with RTTS baserunning

I've played 2 months now of RTTS.

The baserunning is hands down the worst baserunning controls I've ever played in a video game. They're flat out random. Some times up makes you go forward to the next base, then the next time right does. Then right makes you go back to the bag sometimes.

It's horrible and the dev's should be ashamed of how atrocious it is. Not only that, but it's nearly impossible to tell when a pitcher is going to try and pick you off now, since they zoomed the view way in (with once again NO OPTION to zoom out) and you get no "flash" or anything to give you a heads up. It's ridiculous.

I love the game, but it is infuriating for developers to take something that was perfectly FINE in 08 and screw it all up for the sake of making it "new."

All I ask for is the OPTION to use classic baserunning over this crap that's in the game, and the OPTION to turn off a big flashing red circle around the ball, etc.

It's making an otherwise amazing experience frustrating as hell.

i kinda feel like the baserunning in rtts is a double edged sword. on the negative side, ive played thru spring training and a few games into the AA season and have already had quite a few mishaps on the basepaths. i think im starting to get used to it though, but its still very frustrating at times. but on the positive side, and maybe its just me, i really like the control it gives you with the aspect of leading and base stealing. last year, i hated how i would push R2 to steal and sometimes id get a good jump and others would be terrible. i love the fact that this year i can go when i want......just yesterday i was on first and i tried to steal second. i got a huge jump and had the bag swiped easily....until i let go of the left stick a tad to early and just stopped 3/4 of the way there and was tagged out.....
im just gonna give it some more time and see if i cant get the hang of it.

I commented on the RTTS baserunning issue in the impressions thread. Twice last night I was forced out on a single to left because my runner stopped and decided to go back to 1st when he was about 20 ft from 2nd base. Unless they give us back the old baserunning controls, I'll have to sim all baserunning in RTTS.

I agree with you there, I like having control over leaning and the jump I get. I just wish after you take off it would revert to the old way of using the triggers to advance/retreat.

Like everyone else, I really don't like these new controls. I decided just to turn baserunning off even though last year it was one of my favorite aspects of RTTS. I don't know how easy it would be or if it's even do-able, but I would LOVE to see an option for the old controls be patched in. It seems weird that they aren't there, given that every other control scheme has multiple options.

i think that i have figured out the base running that is working for me still testing. what i am doing is when the camera changes push the left stick toward the base you want to go to. like if it is hit to right field and you are on second and the camera is behind you push it up to go to third down if you want to go back to second or if you are on second the ball is hit to left and the camera is to your players right like you are looking from home push the stick to the left to make him go to third or right to make him go back to second. just push towards the base you want to go to. seems to be working for me still doing some testing.

Honestly, I'm just simming all base running right now in RTTS, because my player isn't fast enough to steal anything anyways, so all that matters is running to the bases. Doing so gives me a chance to practice when I get doubles/triples, get the timing down, ect.

Like I said, with time players can adjust themselves to the bad controls, but they shouldn't have to in the first place.

I'm not sure what would be easier to patch, fixing the affect that the camera following the ball has on the base running or allowing people to use old base running controls. Regardless, one of these options should be considered.
