The thing is though, you two that like it, is that it could be just as 'fun' if they had made it so pushing the L stick RIGHT always advanced and LEFT always retreated, regardless of the camera angle.

It was just a bad call by the developers to let the change in camera angle affect which way you have to move it.

      Re: Problems with RTTS baserunning

I haven't gotten on base that much to even use the new controls more than a couple of times. But, when I did, I found it confusing as well, but the notes from Russell will hopefully prove helpful. My biggest adjustment is going to be getting used to holding the stick right (or left) to keep moving. I'm stopping too much trying to steal.

Now, if I can just figure out how to keep from striking out every other at bat, I can try out the new baserunning more!!

I'm with the majority here that the new baserunning for RTTS is terrible. We should have been given the option to use last years, just like we can still use the classic pitching and classic guess pitch. Hopefully all of us voicing our frustration will cause SCEA to change it next year.

I think the new controls are great once you get used to them. Being able to lean back n forth, play around with the pitcher makes things so much more interesting. For all the complaining you would think people have the common sense to go into practice mode and learn the baserunning controls.

But nope, continue to frustrate yourself! What a great way to play the game!

I have been playing baseball games for a LONG time. I go so far back I played Micro League Baseball on an old Apple II in 1985. I've played every baseball game since then and my personal feeling is the MLB series is the best total package in a baseball game. Stats are good, graphics are good, gameplay is good. As a RTTS player I don't like the new baserunning controls but I will put up with them for this year because I like and appreciate the total package with the hope the dev team will update the baserunning next year or with a patch.

On a side note I want to let the guys at SCEA know that many of us really appreciate your work.

I know the base running controls perfectly fine. That does not mean that I do not think that there are much simpler ways to achieve the same fun (regarding the leaning, etc). You could do the same thing if right on the L stick always advanced and left on the L stick always retreated, regardless of camera angle.

Do you also have a problem with the throwing option as well? I think it makes sense, I just point to whichever way I need to go on the screen. If I'm going for a double, I just don't let up on the stick. I agree that they could have put an option in there like I believe they have for throwing the ball in RTTS. You might as well just get used to it - it's not going to change (for 09 at least).

Won't work all the time, I remember a couple times with tagging from 2nd. The camera moves so you assume that you should push left on the L stick to run to 3rd. That will do absolutely nothing. Pushing UP which *should* retreat to 2nd will advance the base.

I don't see the point of not adding the option of classic controls on RTTS.....it's there for season and franchise....so why not RTTS?

well the more I play the base running thing isnt THAT big a deal, but the only real problem Im having with it is even when I know what direction to push it relative to the camera, the camera angle whips around again so fast that Im left standing. I agree it should just be up to go forward down to go back instead of having it camera relative.

I was pushing up and down no wonder why I was never getting anywhere! I do agree that it shouldn't be camera relative. Left to retreat right to advance would be perfect. Now that I know it's left and right and not up and down I think I can deal with it. The wording on the instructions leaves something to be desired glad it was clarified and that I'm not the only one having issues.

huge mistake by the developers, mistakes are forgivable. not owning up to them and saying that they will not fix or at least allow you to go back to what worked perfectly fine is not. i can put up with the camera sensitive controls for now my biggest gripe is getting back to a base. it seems that the pitchers moves are much quicker and the runners response to your actions is delayed no mater how quick you move and with no real help from the 1st base coach or a flash on the screen to get back as in last years model it is even more difficult. still though love this game wouldn't trade it for any other i have ever played.

Russell, we do appriciate you being here, really, most game developers could care less, but you guys at Sony have been here for us and we thank you very much. But I have to say man, the base running controls in my opinon in this year's game is not good. I love the RTTS mode, I enjoyed and had a blast playing it last year in 08 and I think I even wrote to Sony how excellent and unique this mode is.

What happened? Why was the base running controls changed? I think it was fine the way it was, I had no problems with it. Did someone complained that it was too easy or something?

Please, if possible, bring it back in a patch, if not, please, for next year's version.

Thanks for taking the time Russell, very much appriciate it.

Co-signing this. I want the old controls back. I have tried to get used to them, but its gotten to the point where A. I gave up using my guy on the basepaths(turned the control over to the AI) and B. I have been thrown out so many times due to either releasing the left stick too early and stopping short of the bag or being caught in a rundown b/c I overran the bag b/c I didnt release the left stick in time.

I am SO FRUSTRATED and I just seem to not be able to time the left stick crap to save my life. Like I said before, if it isnt broke, dont fix it. There should have at least been an option to change the control scheme(if possible). I truly enjoy this game, and this along w/ Blu Ray are the only reasons I bought a PS3 last yr, but this control scheme has a 31 yr old man screaming at his tv screen, and thats just not a good look for me...

P.S. I'm tired of Ortiz playing 1st over Youk too. I have lowered Papi's defensive ratings to 20 or less, and he still starts over Youk in my RTTS...very unrealistic. Had the same issue last year. Other than those two issues, I would have said this is the best sports game ever made PERIOD.
Please patch these issues if possible. *end "rant"*

I have a great idea. Next year when you release ademo why don't you make it RTTS that way everyone can play it and give feedback about problems they encounter. Also could you tell me why you don't look at the playstation forum for MLB 09?
