Hello all... I had just had to sign up for this website to join this conversation. I have been doing internet searches to find a solution to the lag problem. I just switched from a standard definition tv to an HD, and it's driving me crazy. I've gone from a regular pro to not being able to make any contact. So frustrating! In looking through all of the comments here it looks like the "PC Mode" is the way to go. Can someone please explain this further for a non-techy guy like myself? I have a Toshiba, which has "PC" as a possible input selection, but it looks like the only way to connect to that is through a VGA cable (I even had to look up what that was, please forgive my ignorance). Can someone please tell me if I have a chance to play this game normally again, or am I out of luck?
This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

Re: This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

I really hope a member of the MLB The Show team reads this.

So on the advice of another OS member I unhooked my PS3 from my HDTV and tried it on a 24" LCD computer that has pretty much no input lag and there was a HUGE difference in how I was timing/hitting the ball. On my 46" 1080p LCD (it's a relatively recent TV,) I'm so far behind everything, swinging and missing, not accomplishing anything, etc. On the 24" monitor not only could I immediately tell a difference in how I was able to "see" the ball but now I'm out in front of pitches, taking pitches easier, AND I hit a Home Run literally within 10 minutes of playing in comparison to playing on my TV for about 2.5 hours last night and managing now more than 5 or 6 hits TOTAL. Just in case someone asks yes my HDTV has a "Gaming" mode, and no it doesn't make any difference at all.

My point is, the difference was not minimal, it was significant. I think this game, like the Rock Band series, needs some sort of "Calibrate lag" feature to help with the timing aspect of the hitting game. If it's this huge of a difference, something should be done about it. I saw that I'm not the only person who was REALLY behind the pitches in terms of speed/timing and I think perhaps many of these people have the same issue that I did. It's pretty frustrating to see how huge of a difference this made because 1) Hooking up the PS3 to that monitor all the time really isn't an option, 2) Getting a new TV just because of this one game isn't all that realistic, and 3) I imagine this is something that can't be addressed at this point for MLB 12.

Anyway if there are others who are frustrated with hitting poorly, try hooking up the PS3 to either a computer monitor or an older CRT "tube" TV. I'll bet you that there is an immediate difference.
I've thought this for the last couple years.. In a game where timing is so crucial it seems like it would almost be necessary... For the simple fact that all TV's are different. Some good (lag), some bad, some in between.Comment

I have a 47" LCD samsung 120hz 1080i/p and when game mode is turned on its perfectly fine. I don't seem to see any lag I can pull the ball or hit it to oppisote field when I choose. It might just be the brand of the tv or the certin modelMLB-NYY

Re: This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

I told my wife I want to get a Plasma TV. She asked me why, and I told her because I can't get hits in the game. She said, "Let me get this straight. You want to buy an expensive Plasma TV because you have trouble getting hits in a baseball game?"

I looked down rather sheepishly, really feeling embarrassed to answer, but finally came up with the muster to say it. "Yes."

She looked at me with the meanest eyes I've ever seen in a woman, and then, before I knew it, she slapped me hard, twice across the face and said, "Now that's the kind of hits you'll get if you buy a another TV just for that baseball game."

I'll try pitch speed at zero.Comment

Re: This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

Setting my visio to game mode and turning off all of the post processing options, noise filter, adaptive contrast, etc helped alot. Went from never being able to hit the pulse but being dead sure I was on it to being playable. Still not perfect. Can without a doubt tell the difference switching it back and forth. Batting is a bit harder to tell since there's alot more than timing that effects performance and just getting better at the game.
Not sure why they don't just copy 2k's pitching interface and be done with it.Comment

Re: This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

I am not really looking for a solution, just a place to vent my frustration.

I usually do all of my gaming on a 20" Panasonic tube TV, but I decided I was going to see how the PS3 looked on my 46" Insignia 1080p 120HZ. I have to say the picture quality is amazing, but as I was playing MLB 12 The Show I noticed that i was very late on the pitching meter and I was very late while hitting. I thought "man I must suck today" but i hooked my PS3 back into my tube TV and I was back to playing how I normally do (which is decent).

I thought it might be because I have a crappy HDMI cord. I was wondering if using the PS3 Component AV would be any better than HDMI. But i did some searching and found that input lag is my problem.

Basically from what everyone is saying, in order to play MLB 12 The Show without lag AND still in full HD (I am assuming that this is how Sony wanted everyone to be able to play the game) you need a plasma TV. I was under the assumption that plasma was a thing of the past and that LED was the new thing and how it's so great (except for that lag thing).

I was also wondering since Sony has a TV specifically for the PS3, if this TV also suffers from input lag.

Sony has to be aware of this issue with LCDs and LEDs. So why would they make a game specifically for their system that can only be played (correctly) on certain TV's in order to have the experience they want you to have playing their game. Maybe thats why Sony has a TV specifically for the PS3.

I tried tweaking the settings of my Insignia TV but nothing seemed to help the lag. I was planning on getting a new HDTV soon but now I am thinking I should just stick with my 20" Panasonic tube.

If you have read through all of my banter, I greatly appreciate it. Thanks!Last edited by votto19; 03-12-2012, 04:40 PM.Comment

LoL she smacked you, I have a 50" samsung plasma and they aren't really that expensive. I don't know what everybody is going thru but one thing I do see from time to time is the delay after a pitch causing me to swing early. I preach patience, at first I swung at everything and then I saw somebody approach to hitting the ball and I used it and haven't looked back.Comment

Re: This game absolutely, 100% *needs* a "calibrate lag" feature

I 100000% agree that the game needs a calibration feature like Rock Band.

I love the game, but to be honest I have to dumb down the settings year after year in order to be able to have a hitting experience where I actually evaluate the pitch coming in. Even in game mode on the TV, setting my receiver to pass the signal through clean and all the other valid suggestions in this thread, I am late on everything with everybody and it's pretty much a bummer.

The lag exists in other games too but even in something like Battlefield 3, I feel the tiny input lag (because we are only talking about a tenth of a second or whatever) is something I can live with. Especially when you can kind of compensate by adjusting the controller sensitivity setting.

Unfortunately in a baseball game, it's sort of a sore thumb and you can really notice it this year when using Pulse Pitching.

And uh no, I'm not going to buy a new TV any time soon. For those say that a calibration feature couldn't be built in, I'm not buying it. Seems to me it would be the exact same principle as in Rock Band, just delay the visual output by however many millseconds is necessary based on some kind of meter tool that could put installed.Last edited by Strings74; 03-12-2012, 07:08 PM.Comment

I noticed that pitch delay last year, kind of a stutter as ball travels to you. I'm surprised you get that on your Plasma TV. Hey, maybe it's good she smacked meLoL she smacked you, I have a 50" samsung plasma and they aren't really that expensive.
