So that is what I'm referring to. Apparently the data from mlb.com isn't relying just on pitch movement... if somebody calls his primary pitch a changeup, it may be labeled a change up even if it moves more like a circle change. Things are of course improving... but it is still not perfect. I hear you though... when I saw splitter kept being labeled as changeup in earlier years of pitch fx on mlb.com, I almost wanted to break my computer monitor in rage......

Do you know what the threshold was for differentiating pitches within an archtype or are you not allowed to divulge that kind of information? Basically, how does SCEA determine a running fastball, sweeping curve, circle change, etc. etc. Is it purely anecdotal, or is it an insane amount like ~10 inches of run for a running fastball? So that is what I'm referring to. I believe that's part of SCEA and MLB.com having "a po wow and the magic happens" area that Ramone mentioned... so in detail I don't know (exact thresholds and stuff... certainly not). There are some things I got to learn from Brian, and others I can infer from the info I got from him, but it basically comes down to whatever info SCEA can get from MLB.com, which is certainly not just pitch fx.Do you know what the threshold was for differentiating pitches within an archtype or are you not allowed to divulge that kind of information? And if you think about it... even your method isn't perfect right... I don't exactly remember how you calibrated the individual pitch break rating to the in-game break, but I remember Bahnzo et al. doing that for his RosterTools (?)... but you cannot capture completely the wide spectrum of pitch break you actually see in real life due to different spins, arm action, etc.... you are approximating to one of the pitches available in the game.
I think SCEA is doing the best compromise for the current system in the game... and going by the label instead of movement.
In any case, the pitch edits do look so much better, and certainly will minimize your effort to customize to your liking (I think).Comment

Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries
Has fielding with the 3B/1B been tweaked at all? Maybe it was only me, but last year it seemed the screen would transistion to fielding a tad too late thus causing making plays on the ball, especially down the line more difficult. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done, but it seemed as though the screen needed to transistion a tad faster.
A) Anyone else experience this last year?
B) If so, has it been addressed?
Thanks!

This is hard for me to answer because I did not really have a problem last year and things felt good to me when playing 13. Plus I move my defense around often so that could be the difference as well.Has fielding with the 3B/1B been tweaked at all? Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries
this year can we truly tell the differences between fielders?
i mean, say i put jeter in center, he shouldn't be tracking down balls like torii hunter.
it should be a adventure, heck even real life granderson has tough times out there.Comment

Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries
In the community impressions thread, several people were raving about the new ball physics. Why is it that it seems like evry sports game that gets released touts improved ball physics, and we all rave about the new ball physics, get all excited, then in the end, not much seems changed. Think 2013 ball physics will be a revolution? Well below is from the 2012 community day thread.
"the ball physics were completely redone this year. The impact this has on the game is monumental – I can’t stress that enough. Balls react off the bat with a sense of realism missing from MLB: The Show games in the past. This is one of those things where you never realized just how big an impact it made until you see it in its new iteration. "
So 2012 was monumentally different from 2011? Thats what we were told, but I didnt notice monumentally different ball physics. Madden previews tout improved physics every year too.
Im not saying improvements arent being made, Im sure they are. But it just seems odd to me that every preview I read about a given sports game touts its new physics and we all drool over it, then a year later we're told how bad the physics were in that game, but how good they'll be in the next one. I guarantee in the 2014 Community Day thread, someone will tout how this will be the year they finally got the ball physics right and what a huge difference it will make in the game.Comment

Yeah...after posting that question I was thinking this may be a "personal" issue where its something I think I'm seeing whereas my players aren't good enough to make those plays, or things along those lines.
But you brought up another question I had..in '13 is it possible to "custom" set your defense? Meaning I can move players by individual position instead of as a group?
Example being against a strong pull RH hitter, having my LF play a bit deeper than "normal", CF play "normal depth" and the RF play a few steps in because chances are if he hits the ball to the opposite field, its not going to have as much power behind it.Comment

Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries
I walked away from CD felling pretty good with this. I am not going to say it is perfect but the on field balance of good and bad was more noticeable. The fielders have been slowed down, more animations have been added to allow situations to unfold, etc. I noticed it quite a bit in outfield play with the amount of ground I could cover based on 12. Last year I felt I could get anywhere with any player. When playing at CD I was not making the plays I could in 12 and the ball physics also have something to do with this as well too.
I did not do anything extreme like you mentioned above but I saw positive steps taken overall with field play. Remember I am not saying it is perfect but getting better!“The saddest part of life is when someone who gave you your best memories becomes a memory”Comment

If you didn't see the difference between '11 and '12...then that's where the problem with you not "getting it" lies.(to you it didn't seem it, but a lot of us(not just CD guys for sure) did.In the community impressions thread, several people were raving about the new ball physics. There was no doubt a big difference from '11 to '12.
I didn't get too much gameplay in on '13, but of course if there was improvement and it makes a difference they are going to say it.
I don't think anyone said or would really ever say "perfect" ...."no need to tweak it from here"...especially from just 1 week(4 days) at CD.

Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries
I find it puzzling you would walk away from 12 not seeing much difference from 11. The whole physics engine was rewritten and to date it was the best the series had seen. Now with that said there were some issues but hit variety took an impressive jump from the existing series. This year issues were addressed, things retooled etc., and now we are seeing another major bump in the hit variety department for 13. I always held MVP in high regard with hit variety and I can honestly say the Show is matching and surpassing it now.In the community impressions thread, several people were raving about the new ball physics. I can't persuade you to like them but to say there were no wholesale changes from 11 to 12 is off base imo. Hopefully the work in 13 will give you some satisfaction in this department.Last edited by nemesis04; 01-26-2013, 10:30 AM.“The saddest part of life is when someone who gave you your best memories becomes a memory”Comment
