You really think the Sox would bench a $9.5 million player for another player that isn't much of an upgrade? Rollins has more than one year left on his contract too. What are we going to do with Rollins next year? Postpone Bogaerts even further? The Sox would be back where they started this year. As for Rollins and the playoffs, yeah, he hasn't done much. He would be MUUUUUUUUUUCH better if this was 5-6 years ago.
I don't get why people always go up in arms about benching expensive players. A-Rod, Mike Komiserek in hockey, etc, sunk costs are sunk costs, you have to minimize damage or maximize gains.

Before I refute anything else, though, I think I'd need to see Drew's stats vs Rollins' stats in OP's post. Not sure if they're all posted or not but I don't have time to go find it atm.

Bogaerts is probably nothing more than September callup in 2014 so having Rollins and his leadership for the 2013 ASB and on would be a nice thing if you ask me

He seems ready to be called up to Triple A at anytime which means he could be called up when extended rosters come around or even become the starter next year. The Sox aren't in need of leadership right now either. Rollins has little value whereas Iggy at least has value as a utility player.

A-Rod is your best example? He's past his prime like Rollins. He has more than one year left on his contract, like Rollins.

What? I'm just stating that a sunk cost should be dealt with effectively and not prodded out there just based on salary.

I'd keep him in the minors until at least June next year to keep his service clock from starting. No reason to rush the kid

If they want to deal with a sunk cost, they wouldn't trade for Rollins who's more suited as a back up himself. Having Drew and Rollins barely makes a difference. The Sox have better options to bulk up such as 1B.

Yeah, that's backup material right there!

I don't think they can delay him that long.

Look for a Sept call-up this year for sure then some hand-wringing over if he should break camp with Boston next year.

He's really succeeding in AA at 20 (after owning AA at 19 last year too), so I'm not sure how long it'll be now. .311/.386/.530 in 338 PAs in AA ball with decent, not great, plate discipline. He might be a candidate to skip AAA entirely ala Profar and Starlin Castro. The final thing Bogaerts needs to work on is his defense.

I'm with you guys that Rollins is still more than a backup at this point. He did hit 23 HRs and win a GG last year, so...I don't see any reason why you can't get Rollins for this year and maybe next, and then trade him off to open a spot.

+1 despite the HR/FB luck. Rollins is essentially Iglesias' ceiling.

Well I'm not sure they compare that well since Iglesias is a much better defender (all GG stuff aside). Iglesias will never hit like Rollins though from what I've seen/heard.

Rollins did have a fairly high (for him) HR/FB rate, but he had similar rates in 2006 and 2007. It's about as much of a rarity on the plus side as his 6.7% was in a poor 2010. Given the variance of a few hundred PAs, it's probably 1-2 standard deviations for Rollins, so it's not tremendously significant. 8% and 10% HR/FB would be about the difference between 12 and 15 HRs on 150 fly balls for some perspective.

I don't think he's a MUCH better defender on the sole fact that I think a lot of people underrate Rollins' defense. And that's why I said ceiling; if Iglesias hits, he could be Rollins, but I don't think that's likely.

It's still some luck regardless and that + standard aging means he's probably due for some regression. He's still an absolutely excellent player, though.

Playing as the Rangers and I'm looking at Trying to add either Price or Elisbury. What would it cost to get either one.

I would ask about Stanton but I know he would cost a lot to get
