Re: 2013 The Show Official Trade Discussion Thread

So I've been goin over trades for my Sox franchise that I might make when OSFM comes out, i was wondering if i could get your opinions. I'm thinking of giving ATL Gavin Floyd, Dayan Viciedo, and Keenyn Walker and having Chicago receive Brian McCann & Aaron Northcraft, I think the trade my be alright cause McCann is in contract year, and is on the "decline" while ATL has Bethancourt waiting in the weeds. My other trade is giving SF Courtney Hawkins, Scott Snodgress, and Gordon Beckham and Chicago gets Tim Lincecum. I know this one may seem pretty unrealistic, but its another contract year and if he has another horrible year i think what i'm giving up is to much, but i'd like to pick him up to replace Danks. I probably wont make both trades either one or the other. Tell me what ya'll think and your ideas to edit them.

Alright guys...about to start my rebuilding 'chise with the Houston Astros (I know, I know not very original this year, lol). I am thinking about doing a handful (~3) of realistic-as-possible trades in ST to keep the DNA of the current Astros intact while also putting my imprint on the 'chise as I am not Jeff Luhnow.

I was looking at some possibilities based on young players I like and I came up with these:

HOU acquires: Adam Eaton + Patrick Corbin
AZ acquires: J.D. Martinez + John Ely + Wesley Wright

        HOU acquires: Mike Olt
TEX acquires: Bud Norris + Dallas Keuchel

        HOU acquires: Casey Crosby
DET acquires: Jose Veras + Marwin Gonzalez

The idea with these is to get some young, lefty starting pitching depth and a couple of young everyday regulars far away from arbitration. Also, I send some useful vets to teams in the hunt to win their divisions this year.

I figured AZ could use another righty bat in the OF and the drop-off from Eaton to Parra is not that large. TEX might be able to use a 5th starter who can strike guys out, and Norris would be an inexpensive alternative to Garza or someone like that. The Tigers deal gives them another option at closer if Rondon doesn't cut it there, and an alternative to Ramon Santiago at MI.

Input and suggestions on any or all of these is most welcome.

Not really sure Moises Sierra is an upgrade for them. He'd kind of get stuck in that Maxwell/Martinez^2 OF. What about a pitching prospect like Danny Barnes? Wesley Wright is sadly one of Houston's best trade chips...

I think the first one is more realistic. The only issue I see there is how would ATL use Viciedo with that OF they have and no DH? McCann to CWS is certainly something Kenny Williams might pull off though and we know he's not shy to trade prospects. Maybe Gavin Floyd + Keenyn Walker + Conor Gillaspie would work?

The second one, I don't think [even] Kenny Williams would trade Courtney Hawkins so soon after drafting him. I also don't think Lincecum is very available--he's still a fan fave there.

That's a tough one because you'd be taking the ace off of a division champ and leaving them with a bunch of prospects. I'd lean no for competitive balance reasons, even if the value is about right. I think Jemile weeks alone would be gettable for sure.

I believe the first and 3rd would work. Getting Mike Olt would be challenging though but I would certainly trade Bud Norris for something.

The first one would never happen. Eaton is thought of very very highly in the D Backs organization, so much that they felt confident in trading Upton and having him as his backup. I like the 3rd one though.

LOL yeah i want to use the 'Stros too but so many people here are. I might choose the Mets. go full rebuild mode and trade Wright and Santana... I need to bring up the value guide AC made! Get me some nice prospects!

                Edit:
Now the value sheet says 2 high C's for Santana... Could I get a high B and throw in D for him or is that unrealistic? I'll have to look at prospects for other teams once the OSFM's come out (only know the Sox farm system)

OK looks like that Tigers trade is a winner. About the first trade with AZ, how about I go after Parra instead of Eaton? He's a little pricey for my tastes and heading to arb, but he's only 25, is viable in CF, and I suppose dealing Veras/Norris/Wright would give me some wiggle there. I also just remembered Eaton is on the spreadsheet as unrealistic (oops ).

So, the first one would become:

HOU gets: Gerardo Parra + Patrick Corbin
AZ gets: J.D. Martinez + John Ely + Wesley Wright

As for the Mike Olt deal, any thoughts on if that could be worked out at all? I know he's highly touted, but it seems he's been in every Texas trade rumor for about a year now. Bud Norris + something else (not Altuve or Wallace or Carter) would be fine. Jury's still out here..

If not Olt, any ideas on a young position player (hopefully not at 2B) with some pop I could get for Bud Norris? One of C/3B/LF/RF would be most helpful.

                      Thanks for the input fellas.

Yeah, I guess I overlooked 3B mostly due to Viciedo's defensive limitations. But that actually makes some sense. Juan Francisco will probably get 1st crack this year, but he's hardly a sure thing. I think your original trade would be a possibility if ATL thinks Viciedo can play third for them. Viciedo only played a tiny bit of third in the bigs and not any since 2010 where his FP was a paltry 0.897, but I suppose his bat could justify that. Chipper wasn't exactly a vacuum cleaner over there near the end of his career either.

Trade value on the spreadsheet is all-inclusive as possible here. It takes into account how good a player is, how critical a player is to their team, the potential aspect, and any mitigating factors like a bad contract or the "injury prone" label.

So, the goal would be to match a player that has a "mid-B" value for example to another player that has "mid-B" value and use that as a starting point for negotiations. Certainly things like matching salary and team needs should be considered as well.

You know the "near matching" of trade value is actually a good question, and I think that's the place where human input in this thread can be most valuable. For example, low C = low C is easy enough math to do, but what about in trades with uneven numbers of players, and surely a low-c for mid-c might make sense sometimes. Those gray areas I think is where this feedback is most helpful.

As for your Johan Santana question, I think it would matter who exactly you were going for, then it could be discussed. But, I'm not sure hi C + hi C could get up to hi B even if you add a D as filler. I feel like the scale gets steeper the closer you get to A territory, imo.

And some other ideas for rebuilding teams would be Cubs/Marlins/Twins/Pirates/Mariners/Rockies. Each has their own specific (dis)advantages. If you want to have a franchise hitter to start with, the Marlins (Stanton), Pirates (McCutchen), or Rockies (CarGo) might make sense. King Felix (SEA) would be that guy if you wanted a franchise ace. The Twins and Cubs are kind of in limbo right now but also offer some signature players in Mauer or Castro. And it could come down to which farm system you like best. I feel the Astros obviously give the biggest challenge on all fronts!

                              Give: J.D. Martinez/Norris/Wright

                                Give: J.D. Martinez/Norris/Wright

                                Get: Parra/Corbin

Is that now giving too much or in the ballpark?
