Re: MLB The Show 13 Official Scouting/Prospect/Development Thread

Looking at drafting soon in year 1 of my franchise. Any suggestions? Smarter to pick SP's first or POS players. I am looking at a RHP starter with good velocity and a 18 yo 2B with 97 potential and a rating of 65 overall already. These two are tops on my draft board. I pick 6th in the draft.

Any suggestions from folks who have done well in their drafts would be appreciated.

Would it be a realistic move for Arodys Vizcaino to convert from relief to the rotation or is he Chicago's future closer?

No experience personally. Jus IMO. I would look at ratings that may have their overall high but don't matter to you. Like 90 speed for the 2b. Or even durability. That would boost his overall but you wouldn't have a very good player. Or good velocity like you said but no movement on his other stuff . Kinda see wht im getting at Jus my 2cents. To help decide between these two guys. Also whts your franchise plan ? Like does that pitcher fit your park ? Does that 2b fit your typical mold
I play MLB exclusively with my cousin. Usually looking for info on Franchises. We played minor league baseball as 9-10 YOs on the Zephyrs.

My scouting stratedgy is like others posted on here. I do RHP for each region first, for about 1-1 1/2 weeks. Then I do the same for LHP. Then I do 1 week for infielders, then 1 week for outfielders, and around 5 days for catchers. My first pick in the draft with the 'Stros was actually a Catcher, I had him 75% scouted and it said he had a potential 99. His strengths are fielding and he has an amazing arm. (I think it's around 70 and he is 19 in my second season). Also is a good hitter so I'm excited... also got a really good SP and the draft in my second season is a month away. I did almost nothing in FA other then resign most of my guys, other then some SPs. (Got Jair Jurrens, Arrayo and some other old guy for really cheap, didn't really care because I wanted to save cap space and draft). Have amazing scouts and have around 16-17 mil in cap space with the first pick in the upcoming draft. Since I doubt I'll do anything this year I'm most likely gonna tank it out and trade for some prospects... I already have Arendo, and Dahl from the Rockies. I also got Tajuain Walker and Dom Brown from the Phils. Anyways, really excited for my second draft.

Drafted 3 A-potential prospects, two of which should be major league ready four or five years from now. The other one I took a shot at, despite a remarkably low overall rating (46).

The drafts are so much better this year, and it adds a TON to Franchise mode.

Yeah I did the same exact thing. I'm a week or two away from the draft now... with Correa now at a 70 OVR and in the majors I'm really excited.... just need some pitching!

This is crazy. To tell you the truth, I STINK at these stuffs of scouting players. It confuses me a lot and I still don't understand lol. I think I'm the only idiot that rathers buying players in FA instead of drafting them LOL

But after reading throughout this thread, I got excited about what all you guys said. Even though I still dont understand LOL, Im about to turn my DBacks franchise on and will test everything that has been stated here (hope I get lucky). Luckily, I'm just startimg the franchise. About to play game #10 so I still have lot of time to enter the scouting world and see what I can get. DBacks have the 15th pick so im right in the middle.

The drafts are much better, but it's infuriating that I'm still seeing CPU teams letting their draft picks (both guys with potential and guys they should be keeping just as filler) walk in free agency right after picking them.

Dunno why they don't just program the game in a way that forces CPU teams to place a high priority on making sure they sign their own picks. Kind of undermines the whole process when I'm the only team taking the draft seriously.

Yeah it's just so much better this year, personally scouting is one of the main things I'm focusing on in franchise.

Same, my strategy has been scout young players 20 or under and occasionally 21 then when the draft rolls around draft only scouted players with high potential. Sadly the way the draft is set up by CPU teams its easy to get guys where they aren't a reach because the CPU basically drafts in order of overall.

Just finished the first year players draft in my first year as the Yankees. Here's my picks:

                        CF Luis Rubio - OVR 68 - A POT - Age 18 - MLB ETA 2016
                        SP Josh Staples - OVR 64 - B POT - Age 19 - MLB ETA 2017
                        SP Darin Newman - OVR 62 - B POT - Age 19 - MLB ETA 2017
                        3B Luis Abreu - OVR 61 - A POT - Age 18 - MLB ETA 2017
                        RP Marcos Chavez - OVR 51 - C POT - Age 22 - MLB ETA 2016
                        2B Kareem Sutheland - OVR 55 - A POT - Age 21 - MLB ETA 2019
                        LF Jerald Ayers - OVR 47 - A POT - Age 21 - MLB ETA 2021
                        RF Julio Feliz - OVR 45 - B POT - Age 21 - MLB ETA 2021

I feel like I got good value at each pick, except the RP I gambled on. I think this is a good draft to start rebuilding as my top four picks should be MLB ready in 2017, maybe even earlier. I love this new scouting system. I've never paid attention to the draft that much in recent years but this is awesome.

One thing I've noticed is that players tend to get drafted in order of their Overall Rating. I watched the Astros take a guy #1 overall in 2013, a RF named Johnny Hattaway. He only had B potential, but was like a 74 overall. I had my eye on a few guys in the mid-60's who were an "A" in potential and I was able to get them in the 2nd and 3rd Rounds. I make a little pre-draft board before the Draft starts of who I like. Usually I try to pick guys who are less than a 60 overall that are 19 years and younger. There's no sense in taking a 58 overall pitcher with A potential who is 23 years old. By the time he's any good he's just going to start declining.

As far as training goes. I set the training to "Auto" for every player from Spring Training until May. Usually the computer switching up the areas of training for each player weekly, so your players will get training in every attribute. After that I switch it to something that a player needs to improve on. I have a 20 year-old 2B prospect with only 58 Fielding and so he is focusing just on fielding. By the All-Star break his Fielding has already gone up 3 and his other attributes have improved. I am also willing to bet that it is easier to improve a player's Speed when he is in his younger years (18-22) than it is trying to improve a 27 year-old player's speed. Just my 2 cents. I'm in Year 3 with the Royals. Gone 88-74 and 86-76 so far and haven't made the playoffs, but it's pretty tough on a limited payroll. Definitely a challenge. Guess I'll have to re-read Moneyball

Like in past games does all your scouting info disappear during the draft.

Will I have to keep a notebook with player names and ratings numbers, ETA numbers etc?

Getting very close to my draft and I want to be prepared.

What's a good way to prepare a mock draft, per se? Like, a general top ten? I have the 9 pick and there are some guys I'd really love to fall to me.

I guess this is the best place to ask this question:
Last night I decided to simulate the draft to see how many "A" & "B" prospects there could be in a draft. Last year you would be lucky to see 4 "A" and 10-12 "B" prospects. This year I counted 27 "A" and 53 "B" prospects! Is this normal? It seems like a lot of highly rated guys.
