Re: MLB The Show 13 Official Scouting/Prospect/Development Thread

Drafting has been huge in my franchise and the only reason I've been able to compete each year with the Marlins. Just wrapped up the 2022 season after falling to the Orioles 4-2 in the World Series. I did win the 2016 World Series and have made the playoffs 5 times in that span. The following players are starters from last year's team that I drafted:

SS Stuart Fink 89 OVR (2014 Round 1)
RF Clay Mixon 96 OVR (2015 Round 1)
    1B Bob Bayliss 92 OVR (2016 Round 1)
    2B Rafael Valido 85 OVR (2019 Round 1)

I guess the take away point is to make sure that you don't strike out at the top of the draft (no pun intended) because those players are cheap talent to help keep a franchise afloat and can often make it to the majors within 2-3 years (unlike some of the later round A potential guys). The rest of my team is full of prospects I traded for and developed and guys that I stole in the Rule 5 draft. But if I didn't draft as well as I did the Marlins would still be in the NL East cellar.

Hey everyone, new to the thread but not the game. One thing I have noticed with Scouting and Player Progression is that players regress WAY to quickly. So I drafted a power hitting 1st baseman who was 21 years old. At age 27 he is declining like a 38 year old pitcher. What happened to my star?

If you don't sign your first round draft pick, do you get a compensation pick the following draft?

Yeah in my franchise. Both mcutchen and Harper are out the league at 28. Rated in the low 60s. Did they peak to early since they were rated at 99 at such an early age or was that just a ****ed up franchise

Re: MLB The Show 13 Official Scouting/Prospect/Development Thread

One thing I've been doing lately is identifying the positions I want to address in the draft, and then going down the list of the best prospects at that position and scouting players with all 4 of my scouts at 1 time. By doing this you can get a player scouted to 100% with just 1 day of scouting.

If you discover prospects for 2-3 weeks, you can get like 40-50 prospects scouted to 100% (plus the pre-scouted guys who are all at 100%) and you can really focus in on the areas you need to improve. So what I do is look at the guys with early ETA's and high potential bars and give them first priority, then just kind of go down the list until I feel like I have a nice picture of the talent available at that position. I don't really scout anybody with potential less than 80 unless it's a very thin position and I think a guy might have a higher potential or overall than his pre-scouted totals would indicate.

I feel when I auto-scout the CPU will only scout guys to like 60-80% which leaves a huge margin of error. And trying to manual scout while trying to cover a ton of ground is exhausting. With the '4 scouts on 1 prospect' method I am able to be really efficient and focused in my efforts. I might not throw out quite as big of a net, but what I pull back in my net is a lot more accurate which is better for my needs.

Also, I've never tried seeing if I could accomplish the same thing with only 2 or 3 scouts, but that's something that you could look at as well.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm currently in year 4 And Harper is going really strong for me. I don't want this to happen I figured he would decline starting at 34-35. Is editing the players down a workaround?

Can somebody do me a huge favor and explain to me how to best develop prospects? Especially the blue chip ones.

One of the hardest problems to face-go for a lower upside player with better individual ratings or keep the A potential player. For example, I've got Devin Mesoraco as a B overall and signed to a 5 year, 8 million contract. I've got him until he enters FA.

On the other hand, I've drafted a 19 year old C with a B potential but a very good initial power rating. 69 R, 74 L. He's already up to a C power rating. 21 Hrs and 74 RBI in mid-July, both leading the Southern League. Now all he's got to do is improve the other ratings a bit.

I have noticed that some players I scout disappear when the Draft comes. ..I scouted 3 player that were 70 to 73 with 88 plus potential. ..with the #2 pick. None were there any more. Any ideas?

I did a couple of franchises with the Nats and Harper is always done by 30-31 years old. At like 25 years old he always hits about 50 HR though

hey guys, new here. and I cant believe im reading this about harper and mccutchen. that's about the only thing that bothers me w/ the show this year, is I wish that retiring and declining were more performance based (Soriano, rivera, jeter, etc). but I usually try and edit some of these guys back up each month so guys like jeter isn't in the 60s in one year.

but my question about drafting, have you guys found ANY outfielder that has an arm stronger than 70 as what the bar says is his ceiling. It seems to me in the draft, you cant find a harper, trout, etc that pretty much have a high rating in all..like you will have to maybe take one guy for his amazing power, but may b slow or have a low arm strength rating...

in addition, can you guys please let me know have you drafted an outfielder who was good overall and developed his arm strength pretty quickly to go with other attributes..thanks for the help

This is a great thread. It would be great if you guys could in detail explain the top 5 problems or issues you have with each area (Scouting and Prospect Development).

In addition how you think it could be fixed or improved (not new features) in MLB 14.

Are these tips still good for MLB 15?

I tried searching for a more recent Scouting Thread and didn't see one. If there is one please send me a link.
