Re: MLB 14 The Show: Road to the Show Thread

The Atlanta Braves made Rory McMahon's heart skip a beat with a surprise trade of third baseman Chris Johnson to the Detroit Tigers. The swap opened up the starting spot at the hot corner for McMahon. See his first games as the Major League Starter for Atlanta at the ripe age of 19 years old.

A pitch right down the middle, I'll pop up or foul off, and a hard outside fastball I knock down the line in AA, I'm now just whiffing on. I know the pitching is better at higher level but batting .224 in the same amount of games is crazy. My contact is 70 right 69 left ,58 power both, with 75 plate vision. That sounds familiar. I tore it up in AAA (on Veteran) before getting called up to the MLB. There is a noticeable jump in difficulty between the two. The developers said that AA is one level lower and MLB one level higher than the difficulty you choose so it makes sense that it feels different.

For reference I hit .360+ down the stretch in AAA. When I started in the MLB I was awful. I was hitting sub .200 for a long time. I considered going back to Dynamic difficulty, but reasoned that was just frustration and me wanting an easier game.

My opinion, and feel free to ignore me, because it's really about what you enjoy, is to change nothing. Do not change sliders, adjust difficulty or worry about specific stats.

I think it's just practice personally. It takes time but you will gradually improve. As I mentioned, I struggled my first year in MLB. I bottomed out at .188 early in the year and eventually finished around .280 after getting hot down the stretch. I did suck royal *** in most playoff games though. Given how your experiences are similar to my own I would wager you'll get there in the end. My own improvement has been steady and near the end of my second season in the major leagues (4th overall) my guy is batting .330 with 30 home runs and over 100 RBIs. If I'd made it easier for myself I would have regretted it.

The main thing I did was to try and learn from my mistakes. I stopped swinging at the first pitch when I was having a bad run. Even if it was throwing away some hittable pitches I found it advantageous to get into the mindset of working the count and trying to get ahead. Also, if it gets to two strikes I always use the contact swing (unless it's 3-2). I find that watching a pitch or two really helps me get a feel for where the ball is going and get more balls in future at bats. Except if your Clayton bloody Kershaw whose slider gets me every damned time.

I'm not saying stats don't help. I think I improved a lot more quickly when I focused more of plate vision and plate discipline. If you're simply not hitting balls then plate vision helps (assuming the timing is not off). Contact always helps too, for obvious reasons.

      Anyway, good luck man.

Rory McMahon is finally settling in to the starting role at third base for the Atlanta Braves. He has his sights on the Rookie of the Year award but it's going to take an offensive explosion over the final two months of the season to get there. He'll need to get his average and RBI count up, and a powerful series in Minute Maid Park could be the spark he needs to wake up his powerful bat.

The Rookie of the Year chase was a distant hope at one point, but after a flurry of McMahon Slams, Rory McMahon finds himself in the thick of the pursuit. Atlanta has clinched a playoff spot -- and eventually the NL East -- but how many homeruns can the red-headed beast mash before the season's end? And will it be enough to take home ROY honors?

I created a RF and got drafted 1st round by the Indians, I had racked up 12HRs and 50RBIs by mid-May in AA and never got called up to AAA. Eventually got injured in late May missed the whole month of June. Wondering why I never got called up after tearing the cover off the ball early in the season, wondering if it is because of OSFM Roster? Nevertheless I am enjoying my time, there is always next year and hopefully I am able to get called up soon to the Pros!

I got promoted from AA to big leagues to fast in year one. So now for year 2 I was determined to see how long it would take to be moved to AAA. After two months that is 54 games in and I have 165 at bats with 4 hits and 148 strike outs! I've been trying to strike out on purpose and the 4 hits came from sac bunts that turned into a hit. So far I still start every game and have not received a letter from my manager. What do I have to do?

                  Start over, I guess?

Personally I'd never sabotage my own guy like that lol. I'm guessing you wanted to go back down to AAA because you were worried you would struggle too much right away in the pros. So you counter that by... struggling on purpose, at historic levels? lol.

Yeah hit .182 first season in the majors I was hitting .400 in double A and was the leader in the all star voting and right after the double A all star game I got promoted to the show! They made me lead off and start at 2nd base first game up! Struggled for the rest of the season.

actually I think opposite...off speed pitches tend to be thrown down and away.. so most likely they are hit to the opposite field. If pulled a changeup is usually pulled foul. And most fastballs are pulled when hit by the batter, often they are thrown inside or up in the strike zone. So it gives you some ability to guess where the hit will go if you want to shift before the pitch..

Even when I've done well, I've still had a lot of trouble with pitch recognition. And for the first 50 pas or so, this year was no different. I had 2 walks in those 50 PAs and that was par for the course with me. But something finally just clicked and in my last 100 PAs or so, I've gotten 9 walks. And I don't feel as though it's a fluke because I'm seeing the ball much better. I'm still getting fooled on occasion by a ball that I think is going to curve but stays straight and vice versa, but I don't feel as though I'm blindly swinging anymore.
what helps me early in the count is to only swing at pitches in certain parts of the strike zone. On the first two pitches I try to ignore anything that is down or away, even if it might be a strike. I try to limit early swings to pitches that are dead red in the middle or inside the plate. That often helps me get ahead of pitchers. I also look to see what pitches they have especially sliders, I have trouble with sliders that break in towards my hands.

Rory McMahon finishes the 2015 season in pursuit of the Rookie of the Year award as well as a couple of milestones. Can he take home the hardware and reach the 100 hit mark as well as reach 20 home runs?
