Re: Fictional Rosters
For my franchise with these rosters I came up with a little league history, just to add some more immersion/depth to the rosters.
Only going back 10 years though. So far this is what I have.
Any feedback is welcomed.Comment

Re: Fictional Rosters
I can't wait for the finial roster. I am holding off on my franchise for now and will just wait for the finished product. I think this time I will not be doing a fantasy draft and will just pick an AL and NL team respectively. The teams have so much personality already and I should just build on that.
I am making a few "elite" players. There are a few guys that remind me of real players like the first baseman for St. Louis. He reminds me of Albert Pujos and my wife has a crush on Pujos so that means that I hate his guts and cannot be reminded of him in a fictional roster or anyone that looks like Derek Jeter and A-Rod. Yes, I know I have issues so no comments please.
Anyway, keep up the good work and looking forward to the pending release.Beware of the Milky Pirate...Comment

I too am putting some more players in and switching around some elite players to get a different feel from current franchise plays.
I'm nearly done with the entire N.L.
Here is what I have done in some very limited spare time.....and this was to bring the set into the late 50's early 60's as a "starting point".
-Rid the entire league of all "ghost" players.(they are all on the FA list now...I swapped and edited the players that WERE on the FA list and imported players from the fictional set I was working on).
-Changed a lot of the Latin and Black players to White players(no I'm not one of those ...like I said, I'm trying to mimic the 50's 60's to start...as I progress through the decades, the game(or I) will introduce more and more minority players to represent the times of my franchise)
-Gave all players stirrups and removed any extra equipment(arm/leg shields, batting gloves(some will have none-some one-some both...mostly all white or all black)....changed all cleats to all black with white shoelaces and white heels
-Gave teams like Pitt..Oak some elite bats to see them high in the standings for a bit at least....
I'm nearly done with the N.L. and think that when I finish the N.L. completely, I'm going to start my franchise and do the A.L. as I go along.
-I haven't really changed the ratings yet(the pitch speeds) and I'll probably do that as I go along as well.
If slugg and raleigh allow, I'll post it here if anyone wants a little "old school" fictional set to play up to current times.

YES....
Please post those rosters as well. This would be a great addition and your right it would create a much different feel than current day rosters. I may finally buy the dlc stadium pack and use it to fit the atmospher...Beware of the Milky Pirate...Comment

Please do. Also, did you notice that quite a few of the FA position players had pretty decent appearances? When I first started editing players, I made about twenty or so created players for the FA list, before I realized that most of them had such low ratings they'd just sit on the FA list and nobody would ever see them. I was pretty happy with guys like Miguel "Bones" Batista and Lee Ju, among others.
Anyways, I finished with my comprehensive spreadsheet edits for position players and I've entered ratings for catchers, 1b's, 2b's, and 3b's. Now I'm changed the way I'm going through so that I can do pitchers edits (the first round, anyways) at the same time. So I've started working team by team. I've only really done Arizona completely so far. I'm doing some face edits at the same time, especially for prominent starters and prospects.
I also wanted to mention again that Mr. Random's teams (A's, Angels, Mariners, Rangers, Astros, and Giants) have players that aren't on the original spreadsheet. So I'm not doing any edits for those teams. That means that those players aren't really accounted for in my editing of the top 24 players at each position. I'm debating what to do with some of those players before I start my own personal franchise. I think I might make some of the players into prospects and tune the rest closer to league average, just so they blend in a bit more.
Anyways, I'll hopefully be able to get a couple teams done every day. Some days more some days fewer. Since I'm really mostly dealing with 24 teams, that should just be another two weeks. Unless I get some extra time one of these days.
I think these are looking pretty good. Microsoft Works posted the rookie of the year lists. I couldn't tell if it was showing that many of the top players were very young (the numbers listed were 23 and 22 and so on, but I thought most of those players were older). If that's the case, in the version I'm working on now, the numbers of players in different age groups should be worked out. If he was just showing that players that are veterans in our league show up as rookies in the first year of franchise play, that's something that was difficult to avoid.
Early in the process we discovered that importing over MLB guys, like A-Rod, still left the career stats behind. We were envisioning a problem later where we'd have edited all of these players and then would find the play by play guy announcing that some young player we made already has A-Rod's 600 career home runs. In order to just totally avoid the problem, we sank the MLB guys to the bottom of the league, called them MLB Ghost, and made them old and poorly rated with the hope that they'd retire in a season or two. The problem with this method is that all of our players will be rookies the first year of playing. That's similar to OOTP, where even 30 year olds are building career stats from scratch.
We could have just been careful about which MLB guys we imported over with our players (guys with low career stats, or guys with career stats that matched the age and talent level of our players) but that seemed like a time intensive and laborious pain, so we didn't do that. So, the rookie of the year voting for the first year isn't going to mean very much.
Also, one last thing I wanted to mention about TripleThreat's pointing out that some pitcher's are throwing 96 mph fastballs and 70 mph changeups. As I edited the pitchers on the Diamondbacks, I noticed that some pitchers' had incorrect speeds according to the spreadsheet.
Here's what I think happened: it wasn't clear if the velocity ratings on the original pitchers spreadsheet were listed in terms of in-game rating or mph. So, if a pitcher had a velocity rating of 84 on his fastball, it wasn't clear if that was supposed to be an 84 mph fastball, or a pitch rating of 84, which would put the fastball at around 96 mph or whatever. That's a huge difference. As I went through the Diamondback pitchers, I found some velocities set by the mph and others by rating. The ones set by rating have huge differences between fastball and off-speed pitches.
I'm correcting this as I go through. I'm also tweaking some of the pitchers ages as well as the number of power pitchers as originally indicated on the spreadsheet. If anything, I might be shading just a bit low, but I'll try to watch it as I go.
That's it for an update. If you skipped reading above, the bottom line is that I hope to have a comprehensive edit done within a couple weeks. This should balance out pitchers and hitters and bring this roster much closer to an SCEA roster, which should mean that you won't have to make any slider changes from your normal set just to play with this roster.

Re: Fictional Rosters
Hmm is right. At first glance, I thought this was showing the list of ROTY candidates in order of most votes, top to bottom. But this is showing a history of award winners? Does that mean that each of these players was imported over the real ROTY winner? Where is this list from exactly?
Or is this what you were saying about building a league history? If so, that's pretty interesting. I used to do that when making my fantasy Twins team every year. Last year I wrote a short paragraph bio for each player I created for the team, which helped to keep the players from seeming like some set of numbers I pulled out of my ear and made them more like fictional characters in a story.
Anyways, I'm a bit confused about the list posted above.

Re: Fictional Rosters
Yeah in my previous post on page 44 I mentioned how I was just messing around and adding sort of a league history to these rosters for my own entertainment when using them in Franchise mode. Kind of makes the players seem more real IMO, was just posting for the heck of it, no real reason.Comment

Re: Fictional Rosters
I also wanted to mention that I checked league overall potential grades.
I originally created a spreadsheet with a potential grade breakdown for all teams as I thought they ought to be distributed. It took into account the distribution originally found on TripleThreat's spreadsheet. The spreadsheet I made took total potential grade numbers from an SCEA spreadsheet, but I rounded the numbers. I figured our roster ought to have 310 total 'A's, 520 total 'B's, and 510 total 'C's.
The count I just did of our roster found that we have 52 more 'A's, 32 more 'B's, and 54 more 'C's on our roster. Since the pitchers' potential grades should be correct, most of the excess comes from each team having one or two extra position players at each potential grade. My first question is for Knight or anyone else that has a good feel for the effects of potential grade ratios on extended franchise play. Are those numbers reasonable differences?
If they aren't, I might solve it personally just by importing over the players from two or three teams. That ought to get 50/30/50 ABC players. Then I'll just spread the talent around when I do a franchise fantasy draft.
Speaking of which, I apologize in advance to Go Cubs Go. As I was editing players, I noticed a few 'A's on the Cub's roster that I didn't have listed on my spreadsheet, and before I thought better of it I imported over them. So, if you use the new version for your gameplay at all, you may want to re-import your original players over Alex Irabu and Brian Nam (the two generic 'D' players I imported over a couple of your 'A's) and maybe one of the OF's too.
Sorry about that. I was thinking I was going to go through all of the teams and import over a player or two at each potential grade, but then it seemed like too much hassle, so I stopped after messing with your Cubs. My apologies. If you feel strongly about it, I can do the re-importing.Last edited by raleigh mcclure; 06-12-2011, 07:44 PM.Comment

Re: Fictional Rosters
I used that spreadsheet you sent me with the A/B/C's by team RM but all of the editing was already done. So what I did was I used it to decide what level of "generic" players to import from the SCEA roster. However because I/We didn't use that specific spreadsheet when deciding what players to create the totals didn't always turn out exact. In some cases the spreadsheet, for instance, would say that X team needs Y number of A pitchers, but X team would already have Y+1 A pitchers that had been created and I just couldn't bring myself to copy over a guy I/We had spent so much time creating. Long story short, I made it close. lol
I also new we were going to have a high number of old F players with the MLB Ghosts so I figured it might balance out. lol Don't know if it worked out that way or not.Comment

I have Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Boston done. Planning on getting to a couple more tonight.
Knight, what do you think of the pitcher prospect ratings? Almost every team has one or two SP prospects listed high enough to be in the top 5 SP's for the team, but the prospects are in AAA. I know that's OK for prospects to be rated higher than the MLB level starting rotation, but it seems like there's an excessive number of good pitching prospects in the fictional league. Plus, I had a look at the way the prospects are rated on the OSFM roster, and it seems like my h/9 and stamina ratings might be too low. Alternatively, the other pitch ratings for the fictional prospects may be a bit high. I'm not sure, but I'd appreciate your input. In fact, once I've finished with my edits and gotten things as good as I can get them, would you be willing to fix the pitching prospects? It would be a couple of pitchers per team at most. You might not even need to make many changes, but just have a look and do what you think is best. Would you mind doing that?

Re: Fictional Rosters
I understand completely. And I was frankly impressed that you got the totals as close as you did. I figured there would an excess because of the way the potentials were listed on the original batters spreadsheet. I'm just not sure if it's a problem as far as franchise play goes. I'm wondering, specifically, if the CPU offers contracts based on potential grade at all. I would imagine that potential is taken into account when offering contracts to young players. If there are more ABC potentials, I wonder if teams start to run out of money signing the young players and that leaves talent on the sidelines. I guess if those that use these rosters are OK playing with budgets off or with accepting whatever happens to the FA list in a few seasons, then I shouldn't even worry about it. It's really not that big of a deal.

I did notice some pretty low H/9 attributes on some pitchers.
On the potential totals and the impact of the league, it's tough to say as this is the first year we've been able to import and I haven't really seen what having more or less than the previous average really does.
As far as the pitching attributes I like to start guys out(as "down the road guys") in the 40's/50's if they are A/B prospects. That gives them 3-4 and 5 years to gain steam. Future star pitchers it's in the 50's 60's to start. Having numbers even in the 70's 80's(say clutch or K/9) to start doesn't hurt as it tends to level itself out anyway.
I've been adding in some top heavy hitters to the league to compensate for the pitching. I'll also tone down the RP's and CP's a bit.
I already think these look REALLY good, I'm just putting my own stamp on it a bit.
These are already a blast to play with.
