About my formulas from the spreadsheet: I greatly improved (most of) them when I wrote the Windows program. If I still had them, I'd post 'em.

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
Still use Roster Tools to this day Bahnzo, did you have to ask B-R permission to pull data from their site? Care to share how to pull data so I can set up a database using Fangraphs for hitting and Brooks Baseball for pitching?Bakin' soda, I got bakin' sodaComment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
rascoc, I noticed you have prospects in there that can be added, so a couple of quick questions before I potentially implement them:
a) are the ZiPS projections what they should CURRENTLY be (i.e. are they lessened to reflect that a guy projected to hit .330 in AA isn't going to hit .330 in the majors)?
and if so, b) for a guy like Josh Bell who, where there are 2 prospects that share the same name (Orioles guy and Pirates guy), how would I distinguish between the 2 in ZiPS?Comment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
I didn't ask permission. I used a .dll that someone else had already written to parse html. It was somewhat complicated, but worked well when I learned the ins and outs. The pain was B-R constantly changed their site and I had to rewrite the code every time they did it. I'd have done it much differently if I knew that.Steam: BahnzoComment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
I cant believe I have overlooked this thread for so long. I am always trying to do what everyone in this thread is doing...trying to figure out what does what and how to project the attributes into IRL stats.
I have done extensive testing with discipline, clutch, vision and all pitching /9's. I am currently working on figuring out control and movement formulas.
I have always been a huge proponent of Minor Leaguers when it comes to ratings. Do any of these roster tools have Minor Leaguers implemented?Comment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
Hey Dan do you think it would be wise for rascoc to incorporate all major projection systems into a composite rating for his calculator? Me being a Mariners fan, I noticed your system is particularly harsh on the M's hitters(and the A's but I could care less about them), I honestly don't see Ichiro repeating last year and Ackley getting worse, or Catricala being our 4th best hitter; does the ZiPS system use comparable players and career paths or does it heavily favor the most recent year?
Also, for guys who have not made it to the bigs yet but already have projections - How are their ratings determined and is a similar system used for MLB'ers with a year or less experience?Bakin' soda, I got bakin' sodaComment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
Unfortunately I don't...I'm not sure how Baserunning Ability/Baserunning Aggression affect SB's. SCEA hasn't given a formula or anything, which makes it more difficult to calculate.
But based on my simulation...
Andrus - 80 SPD, 93 BR-AGG, 79 BR-ABILITY (STOCK RATING) - 60 SB, 23 CS--83 total attempts
Kinsler - 81 SPD, 90 BR-AGG, 95 BR-ABILITY (STOCK RATING) - 45 SB, 14 CS--59 total attempts
Beltre - 26 SPD, 47 BR-AGG, 25 BR-ABILITY (STOCK RATING) - 17 SB, 8 CS--25 total attempts
Real Life Projections:
Andrus - 37 SB, 13 CS - 50 attempts
Kinsler - 25 SB, 5 CS - 30 attempts
Beltre - 4 SB, 1 CS - 5 attempts
In this small sample, they are stealing basically twice as much as they should, or in Beltre's case 5 times.
EDIT: i read the last 2 pages of the thread, this was addressed already...Last edited by OSfan093; 04-11-2012, 01:35 AM.Comment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
And just one thing about using projections to get in game ratings....i really feel that this is counterproductive. Reason being, potential basically does this in the game. If Ichiro has the ratings from last year, those ratings will drop over the course of the season as he ages. If you use projections then you already added the "drop" of ratings, and then because he is old, he will drop even further. It would work the same way with guys that will improve over the course of a year. I just think with a system that uses potential(even though it is FAR from perfect in this game) you just can't accurately use projections, IF you plan on using these for Franchise, which i'm guessing you are.Comment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
Will this calculator work for career stats? Not just for individual seasons? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his *ss quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O. as a team! That's what people know us as! - Nick SabanComment

Re: Made my own ratings calculator
Asked a bit earlier in the thread so hopefully will have an answer at some point because I agree, if the numbers reflect what their ratings should be relative to major leaguers, it's an invaluable tool to be sure.Comment

Yangervis Solarte is a projected 82 & 74 contact hitter....That's better than a lot of major leaguers....This guy is only a starting 2B in AAA Round Rock.PSN-Shugarooo
