Tony LaRussa 95 on the Sega Genesis

The first NCAA baseball on the PS2

I think it was called Microleague Baseball on the PC from the early 90's

Bases Loaded is from 1988.


For me, it's Bases Loaded. Nothing will come close to the enjoyment I got out of that game.

I agree. That was the only baseball game where I actually tracked all strikes and balls on paper. I loved the pitching/hitting mechanics in that game, too. Why developers at that time (and TODAY) did not build on the best parts of previous games is beyond me. They continuously want to create their own signature, DUMB features and seemingly could care less about giving us realism. MLB '08 is CLOSE, but it still suffers because the developers have not figured out that we actually want realistic stats in our games.

It's tough... No game has captured what ASB did off the field... but in terms of an overall package?

The Show just offers so much baseball that I don't understand how anyone can differ. Deep owner mode, fantasy drafts, Road to the Show, Manage Only Mode... If you really made a bullet list I think you would be able to just go on and on and on...

I might be a lone here, but you have be joking if you call all these older games the greatest. Sure they were fun, but they had so many bugs and never play a real game of baseball. The Show 08 is a sick looking and plays a great game of baseball. So I would say the Show 08 is the greatest at least until next years then the Show 09 will be the greatest.

Yeah, I agree completely. I can't imagine how someone could vote that way unless they don't have a PS3/PS2/PSP and access to The Show. The PSP version of '08 is pretty much light years ahead of anything that came before, nostalgia aside.

I've played nearly all except for the obscure system titles. I loved the HH series and 2k5 especially, but it's mighty hard to finish a game with either, even for old time's sake, after having played MLB'07 and '08.

I remember being amazed at the hit variety in HH, but it looks pretty basic compared to the Show. The mods for MVP05 are amazing, but the underlying engine really is starting to show its age. Still, these do hold a warm place in my heart, as does others such as ASB (for the custom leagues and create-a-stadium), Earl Weaver Baseball, and APBA on the old Mac 512k. A real underrated gem that is near the top of my list is the final year of the 2k series on the Xbox before switching developers (I can't remember exactly what year that was). It was ugly as could be but played a fine game of ball.

And you can counter that by saying most people who didn't vote for MVP never played the fully modded version of MVP on the PC.

It's laughable to say The Show is better in every category. I'd take the hitting interface, fielding, game variety and fun factor in MVP eight days a week.

I've been saying for three years The Show feels boring and scripted and now there are a decent amount of threads in The Show forum of people singing the same tune but I'll still be labeled a Show-***** for some reason.

I will never forget the first time I played The Show: 06 at my boy's place. It was baseball heaven, I was so blown away I went out and bought a PS2 and the game within in a week. The game was collecting dust in less than two months because it was so boring and scripted to me and that still remains to this day, IMO.

When you factor in the Total Classic mods, stadium updates (real ads, redone textures), real equipment, datafile mods, roster/cyberface updates including minor leaguers, camera mods, crowd/sound mods, etc it gives you something The Show never could.

You get more, better baseball for your money in MVP '05 PC than any baseball game ever made. When you factor in the entire package it's not even close.

Oh...in case you couldn't tell....it's The Show for me. ASB2005 was a game I felt had some great potential...to bad it got the rug pulled out from under it.

I have to agree with the conspiracy theorists point. It's fine if you want to say the game is scripted as everyone has their own crazy beliefs. But that doesn't make the point anymore valid... especially when a developer is telling you otherwise.

Everyone wants to "hear what the developer has to say" and then when they get it, they still don't believe it. I don't know if people want to look at the code or what but it's crazy to ask for their comments then not take them at face value.

Gee, I didn't see a post like this coming from a Show die-hard. I've gotten in enough spats in the past over The Show and realize theres no point in discussing it with the die-hards. I'm sure everyone in The Show forum thinks I have some agenda to bash The Show.

I'm happy for you that the The Show is that amazing in your eyes, but the fact that some people have such tunnel vision and are so naive to think every single person has to accept The Show as the best baseball game is ever made is ridiculous. Did it ever occur to people that different gamers look for different things in video games?

I'm a dynasty guy, I could care less about a RTTS mode. And if I'm spending my free time with a video game I don't want to sit there and watch the CPU play itself so manage mode isn't anything I'd even bat an eyelash at. If that stuff is good for you then great, I'm estatic, enjoy it in The Show.

Bland presentation? Yeah, having custom ESPN, YES, SNY, Fox, postseason overlays, etc is very bland. New camera mods that show off the stadiums, etc during cutscenes are useless.

I've said time and time again The Show has the best announcing in a sports game, ever. But MVP's is still ahead of MLB2K with Miller & Morgan and their 10 lines each that are often screwed up.

As for this part...

Why am I a nut because I feel the game is scripted? Everyone who happens disagree with you is a nut, even though more and more people are seeing the same thing? I'm not saying you'll see the same outcome if you save a game after an inning and replay - I'm saying there are numerous times when I feel I'm not in control of the outcome of the game. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant to the individual gamer - if one person happens to feel that way it affects their individual gaming experience.

Again, I am thrilled for all you die-hards who love The Show, it's great when you find a game like that. But to me it's a very solid sports title that still has a lot to improve on. I'm sorry if it's hard for you to accept that.
