Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
Kotchman better than Gonzalez? No."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
The one thing that annoys me about the team rankings is the same as it is every year -- the Indians get no respect. 7th is not bad, but are you kidding me...this team was within one win of going to the World Series. That means AT LEAST top 5 to me...Comment

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
I know man.. and what about Yunel! That kid had an awesome rookie year. Not that he should be in the top 20 but I hope he has a decent rating. No Diaz or Glavine either...Now, more than everComment

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
I agree. There is no way that the Twins deserve to be a top 8 team. We lost two of our best players and didn't get much back in terms of immediate help to replace either. We have 6 players on the entire list. Something doesn't seem right to me.Comment

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
I will expand on this because obviously many people did not grasp what you are trying to say. But please use paragraphs in the future . lol
Without seeing all the individual attributes you cannot determine which OVERALL player ratings are right or wrong. Two players can have very similar OVERALL ratings with very different ATTRIBUTE ratings which get them to that number. Yet still making one much better than the other.
For instance. Lets say we have two players rated 75 respectively. But here is their individual attributes. ( this is for example reasons only)
Player A- Avg. 72 , Pwr. 80 , Field. 60, Spd. 55 = OVR 75
Player B- Avg. 55 , Pwr. 45 , Field. 95, Spd. 93 = OVR 75
The same OVERALL rating, but VERY different players. Obviously Player A could be a stud DH or 1st basemen while Player B will probably be a utility guy / pinch runner at best.
This is why its pretty darn ignorant to ONLY see the players overall ratings and actually complain about them.
Not to mention every person in this forum could do a roster and we would all be way off from one another. Complaining about ratings is dumb. Thats why games come with editors.
The game (at least last year) doesn't take this into account whatsoever in its trade logic. The ONLY thing that matters in trades is the overall number, not how the player came to that number based on all their attributes, not team needs, not current performance, age, nothing. So, in your example above, if I have the utility guy/pinch runner on my team, I can trade him for the stud DH with no problems at all. THAT is my issue with the ratings and why people make such a big deal about them. This is the NUMBER ONE thing I hope they fix in 2K8.
Let's go one step further and look at it with an in-game example using the ratings in that article. Let's say I'm the Giants. I have Ray Durham (with his .218 AVG and horrible all-around performance last year). In real life, the Giants have not been able to trade Ray Durham for a bag of peanuts. But in the game (2K7 anyway), I could just go ahead and trade Durham away for, say, Jeff Francoeur, because they have the same overall rating of an 82.
Now THAT will make me dislike a baseball game faster than anything else. I had to spend countless hours fixing the rosters last year, and if I have to do it again, I don't know if I'll bother.Comment

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
Since they are young players who just last year finally have matured and had a chance to play fully I won't use career numbers. Kotchman I believe will improve more. He is one of the rare players that actually walks more than he strikes out. Now that doesn't mean much towards scoring runs, but its an excellent indicator of discipline and usually players who walk more than they strike out understand the strike zone incredibly well and are usually the last players you want to write off as flukes... Usually.
Gonzalez
.282/.347/.502
Kotchman
.296/.372/.467
15 points of OBP is roughly equivalent to about 23 points of slugging if you want to weight it. So offensively they are very similar. If Kotchman wasn't hit in the head when sliding into second by a pick off, and needed to get stitches in his head after that, or if he didn't miss two stints due to HBP's, he probably would have done even better. He had a 2 week slump coming back from his concussion.
Plus Kotchman was rated the 2nd best defensive first baseman in the Fielding Bible. He got 2nd place votes from Bill James (the greatest person to ever live) and Rob Neyer.
I have a near obsession with Kotchman though and am a very critical pessimistic Angel fan, Kotchman is the only guy that I absolutely love on that whole team besides Lackey and Escobar. Not for no reason though, I've been following him for like 5 years and for good reason, the guy has an amazing understand for the strike zone, has a nice swing, and is the next Todd Helton with the glove.Comment

Re: Player/Team Ratings are up!
They need to base veteran player ratings on the last year or two, and young player ratings need to be accounted for slight improvements. Basing both 23 year olds and 37 year olds on a 3 year history is not accurate. They could even use PECOTA or DIPS projections.Comment
