    Re: ChaseB's MLB 2K10 Thread

Chase, I just have one important question....

How is the hit variety? Are there dribblers, bloopers, high choppers, texas leaguers, etc.? In the demo everything seems to be a hard hit ball. Are there some balls hit off the end of the bat...basically is there variety?

Not everything for me in the demo was a hard-hit ball at all.

One question for you, Chase... Is everything customizable? For instance, if the game has Ryan Howard too skinny, can we edit body dimensions like we could in 2K8?

Could you tell us what's not editable? I'd appreciate it.

          Enjoy the game!

Trevy, I don't think you can do what you want.
When he says you can't edit throwing arm, I think he means whether a player throws left or right, not their throwing strength (or whatever the attribute is called).

Why do rocket arms seem to show up every 2-3 years?? It's too much work to edit everyone just to eliminate them, IMO. That's what sliders are for. C'MON VC!!!!

Thanks chase for answering all of our questions. I am enjoying reading all these answers to everyones questions for the most part.

Please look into online play more if you dont mind. I basically buy this game to play in online leagues and if theres no presentation like batter walkups, mound visits etc I will be very disappointed. Thats what I hated about MLB 2K9 half the time you didnt know who you were pitching to or how well a batter was hitting that particular game. GOD I hope online play isnt that "HURRY UP" crap again. I want all the presentation offline has to offer but online when im playing a league game.

How's the sensitivity of the pitching meter? Is it hard to pinpoint certain pitches? Can you talk a little bit about pinpointing fastballs vs. curves and pinpointing with good pitchers vs. bad pitchers?

I can answer that from the demo!! Yeah, depending on the pitcher, the pitch, and their ratings, in can be easy to extremely hard to pinpoint certain pitches

Chase, any chance you could take the time to edit an outfielders arm down to 0 or something real low and just see what happens when you throw with him. I'd be interested if the throw is simply a weak normal looking throw like a Johnny Damon throw or an unrealistic looking high rainbow. Thanks.

                        2. Have you dived into franchise yet? Like to see if they have something called League History like NBA2K10? Where it records the championship winners and MVPs of your franchise.

                        Thanks!
                        1. Edit them how? You can change sweatbands etc. but you can't change the Cardinals uniform so it is blue and teal.

                        2. I won't do too much in franchise mode, but this is easy enough to check: There is not a "League History" tab but they do keep track of MLB records and team records. But I don't see anything where they detail all the World Series champs etc. so it's not as in depth it doesn't look like.

Are the other leagues just there or are there statistics of their games? Can you discuss the minor leagues and how they work? Thank you!
There is Triple A, Double A, and then an A-ball squad -- it just looks like most of them are the High-A affiliates by just eying the squads (so I'm assuming all of the A-ball teams are the High-A ones).

In fact, funny enough, Pittsburgh moved their High-A affiliate from Lynchburg to Bradenton and vice versa for the Reds. In the game this is reflected, but I guess they forgot to change the team's hats, so everyone on the High-A team for Pitt has a Reds cap on in their picture on the roster screen and vice versa for the Reds.

On the team-select screen for "Play Now" I can only choose from the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. In a franchise I can not play as the A-ball affiliate either. However, yes there are stats for those games even though you can't play them.

What would you like to know about how the minors work? Not sure what you're looking for when you say "how do they work?".

I have not, but it's a small sample -- but yes Santana I don't think is feeling too well after that ball to the head in real life. It could be that injuries only happen in franchise mode as well, but I'm just speculating there.

Just three (3) general things. Answer these in a general sense. Being overly detailed would be too time consuming. But certainly be my guest if you want to be extra detailed oriented. (Side Note: Did you use "classic hitting" or "total control hitting"?)

                        (1) All-Star vs. Hall of Fame/Legend Stastistics
In addition to "All-Star"level difficulty, it would be greatly appreciative if you could also boost it up to the next (final?) level of difficulty (Hall-of-Fame/Legend?) and report back with barebones general statistics or simply the overall experience.

                        (2) Pitcher vs. Batter duel on All-Star vs. Hall-of-Fame

-No need really for specific numbers (that would be too time consuming). But what's the sense of CPU batters simply taking balls and strikes without swinging.
                        -CPU's tendency to take strikes
                        -CPU's tendency to take balls
-CPU's tendency to swing at balls outside the strike zone.
-CPU's batter tendency on a 3-0 count; 3-1 count. 0-2 count (general sense).
-CPU's tendency to hit foul balls (i.e. defensive swings when they are down in the count).
-Bottom line: Just a general sense of how the CPU's batter reacts at the plate on higher difficulty settings.

                        (3) Homeruns (Contact vs. Power Swing) at All-Star/Hall-of-Fame/Legend Mode)
Additional thoughts on the number of homerun balls at higher difficulty levels. General sense would work well (high, medium, low, etc.) Be detailed if you want though.
-Approximate No. ____ of homeruns with contact swing
-Approximate No. ____ of homeruns with power swing.
-Bottom line: Is it much, much more difficult to hit homeruns at higher settings with power swing/contact swing? Asking because it was a little too easy on PRO mode (demo) using the power swing. From my understanding, PRO mode is considered easy for beginners in 2k's eyes.

                        Much appreciative. Thanks.

                        SIDE NOTE:
From reading a users post on 2k's forum. Apparently using "Classic Hitting" vs "Total Control Hitting" makes a difference. With "Classic Hitting," there are more variations in ball placement on the field. More "doubles'' as well were noted in the demo using "Classic Hitting." Apparently, actually "timing" your swing is important in classic hitting. This is based from a user's experience. This is interesting.
I get that this is important for many folks, but I just won't be able to get to this in any detail because my sample sizes would be far too small -- especially considering the fact that all of you will have a chance to test this in a few short days and be able to come to better conclusions in a few hours (since there's kind of a lot of you) than I would be able to do if I was playing a ton of games over the next couple of days (and I just won't be playing THAT many games).

Well, I turned on a game, changed the camera, left the game, started a new one, and then the camera was still changed. It never asked me to save or anything and I can't change the camera outside of a game, but it stayed change in that scenario at least.

If the camera saves in NBA 2K10 my guess is it will save here, but I never change the camera in NBA 2K so I wouldn't know if it saves or not.

They definitely are not hacking every time -- when I used Santana I had over 100 pitches in the 9th and they worked more than a couple full counts. But it does depend on the batter a good amount so some do hack early and often.

Is that a safe thing to say? I don't feel like I've been leaning too much one way or the other -- I've only played like 4-5 games so I tend to not champion or bash something that early on.

But what I'm most impressed by on the field is probably the pitching if we're separating the game into hitting, fielding, pitching and running.

Yeah, I don't see a Player Lock option, but there's nothing stopping you from re-creating Yuniesky Betancourt and going back through his fantastic career to this point. Just need a little imagination.

Perhaps you can bring this to their attention quickly so that it can be incorporated in the patch currently being worked on? We need realistic throwing speeds / Outfielder throwing strength. Pierre should have scored EASILY on a bloop single to Center. Are YOU concerned by this or did Pierre stumble?

If Pierre stumbled I would not have seen it since the ball was near Jones. I don't believe there is a global editing option either to downplay the arms. How big of a concern is it at this point? Not sure.

I saw numbers on the wall at Progressive Field, but I don't see what would be there to update in real time since the season has not started. I don't believe the scores will update in real time either way this year -- I admit to not having read every line of the Franchise Insights, but I don't think it was mentioned. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I answered the fielding auto assist question a few questions up in this post. I have not seen any collision or ghosting yet -- I do know they redid the animations at 2B to minimize ghosting and promote collisions and the same goes for home plate. I'll have to be on the lookout and see if two OFers smash into each other or not if I get a chance to see it.

I am not taking requests, but that might be easy enough to upload to my 2K Sports profile. I'll post again if I do it.

This is more a franchise question, and I"m not sure how much you have delved into on it, but here goes.

Can you give a general summary on the free agent and trade logic in the game, maybe try some trades and see if they make sense? Also, can you check the team budgets to see if they are in line with real life or at least require you to use some logic in who you sign, etc.

That's my main problem with franchise in other sports games is it's too easy to just buy and trade whoever you want.
Before you start a franchise most of the MLB teams look in line with what you would expect -- the Rays are not at 100 million etc.

When making a trade there is something on the screen telling you how much budget room you have.

As for the logic. I put Garrett Jones (86 overall, and small contract) into the Trade Finder, and could have gotten Kazmir, A. Hill, Jurrjens, Yunel Escobar, Carlos Zambrano, Dempster, BWebb, KRod, Heath Bell, Mike Adams, Nellie Cruz, Elvis Andrus, Matt Garza, Victor Martinez, Billy Butler, Justin Morneau, Scott Baker or Mark Buehrle.

When I put Milledge (83 overall) in I could get Kazmir, Zambrano, Dempster, Webb, Adams, Nellie Cruz, Morneau, Buehrle.

There were no takers for McCutchen in the Trade Finder.

For Doumit (82 overall): Jered Weaver, Oswalt, Wandy Rod, Ricky Romero, Casey McGehee, Mat Gamel, Stephen Drew, Nolasco, Niemann, Helton, Gavin Floyd, A.J. Burnett, and a few others

For Iwamura (82 overall): Gamel, Stephen Drew, Happ, Holland, Cuddyer, Blackburn, Joba, Konerko

                        etc...

When I put GJones and McCutchen (87 overall) into Trade Finder together a couple of the potential deals included: Andrus, KRod, Garza, Rollins and Werth, Hamels and Rollins, Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell, Garza and Bartlett, Lester and Pedroia.

Clearly the game is taking more than overall into consideration during these deals but you can be the judge.

I won't get into offseason/free agency stuff right now, maybe later.

I was going to do a home "test" by renting the game before I buy it. (I have a thread about bugs from 2K9 going over at 2K forums)

A lot of people are concerned about bugs

                        Here is my test I was going to do;

-I'm going to intentionally hit batters and see if my pitchers gets booted or warned. Last year you could beam the entire team if you wanted.
-Last year if you traded someone they turned into a generic bald white appearence on field, even if they were Hispanic, Black or Asian or whatever. I'm going to trade some guys and see if that still happens.
-I'm going to sim through an off day and see if players properly recover fatigue.
-I'm going to see if contract negotiations are even possibe mid season, since last year you could not.
-I'm going to see if every generated rookie in the draft is 5'6" like last year. (That was a funny one.)
-I'm going to get a player injured, then sim till he has 1 days left on his injury, and see if he gets stuck as injured forever like last year.
-Im going to promote some AAA to the majors mid-season and see if their AAA stats come with them, last year AA AAA and MLB stats would all mix together as you promoted/demoted guys. Stats for each league should be seperate!
-I'm going to sim to year 2 in a franchise. Last year CPU teams only bothered to fill 22 rosters spots after the first season. I have no idea why this happened last year, but Im going to check for that too.

If you can try any of these it would be much appreciated.

Here is the complete bug list from 2K9

Besides the tests kp mentioned in the post above...my big concern is Sim logic in franchise/season mode.
Are the results and stats fairly true to real life?
For example, did any players have ridiculous amounts of HRs,RBIs, SBs etc...and were the team's records realistic? Last year (in my season at least), there were too many teams floating at .500, there weren't any really good teams (I think the best record in baseball was like 91-71) or really bad teams ( no one really came close to 100 Ls).
                        Thanks in advance!
I'll look into this when/if I do an offseason/free agency.

No, or at least I have not seen an indicator for when a mistake is being thrown. I have seen some high sinkers -- I get told to throw high sinkers from time to time as well, but when I used Santana I was told to keep the changeup down if I remember correctly.

Losers don't get a say, haven't you ever read a history book?

PS, Millennium was so distraught after his embarrassing defeat that he left me and the rest of his NHL 10 OTP squad out to try and did not play in any EASHL games with them. Luckily, we play better without him. Either way, he's a poor sport.

How is the hit variety? Are there dribblers, bloopers, high choppers, texas leaguers, etc.? In the demo everything seems to be a hard hit ball. Are there some balls hit off the end of the bat...basically is there variety?
I have not seen high choppers or texas leaguers. I have seen bloopers and dribblers. And yes, some balls are hit off the end of the bat. The variety seems OK at this point -- not everything is a laser like you seem to be worried about.

Yes, you are correct that is what I meant.

Thanks for taking the time Chase. You have any plans of simming a season and posting some final standings/leader stats, etc.? I'm sure many are curious to see whats in/out of line the stats are with reality.

                          Thanks,

Are variable strike zones back in the game? I remember they were left out of 2K9.

Hey Chase, have you encountered really annoying fielding/hitting/pitching/presentation bugs? ex. On a pickoff, my guy always dives back to the base, stop, stutter, then continue his animation... This has happened multiple times in the demo along with a couple other little animation glitches

Thanks Chase for answering my questions, everyones for that matter.

Sorry if I was unclear about the uniform question. To get more specific: Can you adjust the size of the uniforms? Ala make them baggy? Ala Manny type of uniform.
