    Re: MLB 2k12 - Impressions Thread (PS3/X360)

I just had a great game vs the Marlins, lots of hits by both teams.. lost 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th.. default AS.

The thing that irks me though it that the Marlins had bases loaded, two outs in the bottom of the 7th and they leave their relief pitcher in to hit. No way that ever happens in a RL baseball game. Score was tied 4-4 and he had pitched two innings already. It was bad enough he was a lefty and pitched that long - it was Randy Choate btw, who I believe is more of a setup guy.

In fact, they left the starter in to hit earlier too on a scoring opportunity and he had given up 14 hits at that point.

I really hope that can be patched, although I'm not holding my breath.. I don't remember that happening in the demo, the AI seemed pretty good with replacing pitchers, pinch running, pinch hitting, etc.. I'm not sure I've even seen a pinch hitter in a full game yet with the retail copy.

what can i do to give up more HRs to the CPU? i have it maxed at 100, and give up about 1 HR every 3 games.

Haven't played enough to know, but does the cpu actually change their lineup sometimes in franchise now for fatigue, etc?

I rented this game over the weekend and I will be passing on the retail copy. This game feels pretty much identical to 2K11, which if you liked 2K11, isn't a bad thing. Unfortunately, a lot of the legacy issues that have been with 2K for several years now are still there and they are things that I know would bug me over the long haul, so I'd rather invest my time elsewhere.

In many ways it is like 2K11, but the new pitching system makes it very different. By new pitching system I mean the way using pitches can cause the selection to turn red, and then the batters will see that pitch better.

So far I haven't seen that happen. I should also note here what I posted (post 134) above how CPU players had significantly better reductions in energy level compared to my players. Seems like CPU players will lose less energy and thereby able to play more games.

I have now turned off player fatigue as it appears one-sided to me, more favorable to CPU players.

I'm not a fan of that dynamic rating. It just seems that was added to make it harder for people to throw a perfect game, than added for actual baseball strategy. I shouldn't be punished because I throw a good fastball to the black outside corner and the batter manages to get a base hit on it.

One other thing I noticed that bugged me was that in the games I played (All-Star difficulty), the CPU threw first-pitch strikes to 99% of the batters, and in most cases, those 0-1 counts became 0-2 counts.

The colors are also a huge eye-sore. NBA 2K has color issues as well, but nowhere near as bad as this game. I don't get how 2K can be so off with the palette they use.

I also don't like the new pitch system of colors, though only for the fact all batters see the pitch better. Now I can understand throwing the same pitches to the same batter should make it easier for that batter to recognize them. However, if a guy has something like under .100 against a pitch type, even if he sees it and knows it's coming doesn't mean he should get a hit. In addition, what is a sinker ball pitcher supposed to do? Of course he is going to throw lots of sinkers, and they will usually be thrown low.

You could be right about why they implemented the new oitch system, either way, I am not a fan of it.

That oversimplifies the issue.. a color is not just a color, it has to do with how it's lit in the game engine. Textures in games have diffuse color (what the texture looks like in the graphics file), and then when they're rendered you're seeing a combination of diffuse color, specular color, ambient light from light sources (sun color, sun angle, etc.) All those other lighting types modulate the original texture's color. When you watch a real game, it's the same thing.. there are many different contributors to the color your eye sees. In broadcast you also add in the quality of the camera being used and how saturated it is. A lot of people notice colors look different in person than on TV. Then there's also the TV or monitor you're playing your game on - that affects things as well.

Ideally, none of that should matter to the user as what they see on their average TV should be similar to what you see in a high quality national broadcast of those teams and that field/court, etc. But it's very easy to oversimplify the process.. you don't just get the color 'right' in the texture. in fact, if you throw a texture in where the color's rgb matches what you see on TV, by the time it's lit and rendered, it probably WOULDN'T look correct.

Anyway, that's not an excuse for 2K, just some clarification.

OK, I'm going to take a second and apologize for my earlier impression on this game. I was in a foul mood yesterday (didn't feel good) and thus, I didn't give the game the proper attention that I probably should have.

I'm going to go back and play a few more games on the default All-Star settings and see if I notice some things worth mentioning in this thread.

Just played it with a friend. Still a solid game, but default pitch speeds are still way too slow. Online is still solid, but still hard to find a game with pitch speeds bumped up to 70-75. Even HOT only bumps pitch speed to 60 which is way too slow. 95+ fastballs feel like changeups on default, and off speed pitches feel like a eeuphus.

Yeah, I agree. The pitch speed can use a bump out of the box. I liked it because I could actually get around on it, but after a while I found I was pulling fastballs 20' foul. I want those down the line!

The default batting camera is much further away from the pitcher than in The Show.. gives me time to judge it a bit better. But yes, pitch speeds are a tad slow, but I still SO at a realistic pace. LOL

I was ahead of everything the first couple games till we bumped up the pitch speed.
