    Re: GMAB8's 2017 MLB today/slider/roster/franchise/discussion thread

So far, with the pitchers that have an even spread or distribution of pitch tendencies I have not had trouble working around yellow or red pitches.

I can live with the pitch number/rating turning red from allowing hits. This is just a reflection of how well that pitch is working on that day. My problem comes when after only 4 or 5 fastballs with some pitchers it turns yellow and red.

My next start is with Paxton again and his tendencies have given me fits. I have edited him numerous times testing tendencies and how high they can be. The next start I make I have gone back to the tendencies from fangraphs as close as I can follow.

    Stay tuned.

Just played May 2nd game Angels Shoemaker at Seattle Paxton.

I've been struggling with Paxton pitching and the yellow/red pitches and tendencies. And did again in this game. I don't have this issue with other pitchers so I'm not sure what the problem is.

One big mistake on a first pitch curve to Trout cost me 3 runs and the game. Not that it would've mattered, Shoemaker shut me down. Only allowed 1 hit and faced 1 over the minimum. Ridiculous, my hitting is atrocious and Shoemaker worked me, pumping strikes and I was waving at terrible pitches.

I recorded the game I will upload when I can.

        Re: GMAB8's 2017 MLB today/slider/roster/franchise/discussion thread

        M's (Miranda) @ Phillies (Eickoff) May 9, 2017.

The Phils struck first on a solo homer by Altherr in the 1st and another solo homer in the 3rd by Cesar Hernandez. In the top half of the 4th the M's showed their own power. Their first 2 hits of the game were back to back solo homers by Cano and Seager to tie the game at 2.

Miranda worked out of a jam in the bottom half to keep the M's momentum going. It paid dividends, as Heredia walked to leadoff the inning, Dyson followed with a single and Gosewisch walked to load the bases for Miranda. Miranda laid down a perfect bunt advancing all runners, scoring Heredia for the 3-2 lead. Segura singled home Dyson and Gamel reached on a fielder's choice that the Phillies musplayed to load the bases for Cano. Cano promptly sliced the gap in right center for a bases clearing 3 run double giving the M's a 6-2 margin.

The Phillies battled back in the 6th with a 2 rbi single by Freddy Galvis ending Miranda's day.

The Mariners and Cano weren't finished however. A Ben Gamel double and Cano's 2nd homer of the day made it 9-4 M's.

Philly scratched out 2 runs in the 8th on a leadoff homer from Maikel Franco and singles from Saunders and Cameron Rupp. 9-6 M's lead into the 9th.

Enter Edwin Diaz for the M's. Hernandez sharply singled to center to start off a rally opportunity. After a ground out and strike out, Franco doubled home Hernandez and Saunders all of a sudden represented the tying run at the plate. Diaz had some stuff left and finished Saunders off with a nasty slider to preserve the win.

        Cano 3-5 2 hr 6 rbi
        Seager 2-5 hr
        Dyson 2-3

        Franco 4-5 hr 2 rbi
        Hernandez 2-5 hr
        Altherr 2-5 hr

        M's batters - 11ks/3bb. I am getting a bit more patient.

Mariners (Gallardo) @ Phillies (Eflin). May 10, 2017.

Philadelphia strikes early once again, Hernandez led off with a double and scored on a Cano error in the first. Then in the 3rd Hernandez was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd, Herrera walked and then the Phils pulled offa double steal. Altherr then scored one on an rbi ground out and Saunders plated another with a single. Philly led 3-0 after 3.

In the 5th, Hernandez singled and scored again, 4-0 Phillies. In the top of 6, Seattle got going. Gamel was HBP, Cano doubled him home, Seager walked and Valencia was HBP loading the bases and Eflin was tossed from the game. M's stranded those runners after Heredia struck out and Dyson hit into a double play ending the threat.

In the 7th Seattle tied it with a 2 out rally. Segura singled, Gamel doubled him home and Cano blasted his 3rd homer in 2 games. 4-4 ballgame.

Then in the 11th, Herrera led off with a single, stole second and scored on the walk-off single by Altherr. Phillies win 5-4.

            Re: GMAB8's 2017 MLB today/slider/roster/franchise/discussion thread

            Monday, May 15, 2017. A's (Manaea) @ M's (Gallardo).

Gallardo pitched a fantastic ballgame in this one. I worked ahead in the count to most hitters. Both slider and fastballs were in control to get ahead. Finished multiple batters off with 4 seamers up in the zone. Gallardo went 7.1 innings allowing just 4 hits, no runs, striking out 5 and walking one. Pazos and Cishek finished the final 1.2 innings perfect.

On offense the M's worked the count and forced Manaea to throw fastball strikes. Working the count allowed for stringing multiple good at-bats in a row.

Jean Segura had 3 hits, cruz had 3 hits including 2 doubles an 2 rbi, Valencia also banged out 3 hits and an rbi.

Mariners win 4-0 behind a 12 hit attack and dominant pitching performances against a weak hitting Athletics team.

Used auto fielding, auto baserunning and classic swing this game. With the classic one button swing I am seeing a greater variety of hits, soft liners, gappers, and big swings in good counts. Auto fielding and baserunning levels the playing field and I see very good animations.

              Re: GMAB8's 2017 MLB today/slider/roster/franchise/discussion thread

The A's brought the bats in Tuesday's game against the M's Chase De Jong and company.

Oakland hammered 5 home runs in a 9-1 route. A's stater Andrew Triggs kept the M's bats off balance with a mix of his change up and slider/curveball combo. Mixing in some fastballs in the high 80's, the Mariners were swinging at pitches out of the zone frequently. With only a few limited opportunities, Seattle squandered those leaving men on base several times. Triggs fanned 10 in 8 solid innings allowing just 1 run.

For Oakland Jed Lowrie smashed 2 home runs and drove in 4, Khris Davis continued to blast M's pitching, homering in the first, Canha and Vogt added homers as well.

Seattle could only muster 5 hits, 2 by Seager who had the only extra base hit of the gsme for the M's, a leadoff double in the bottom of the 9th.

For this game I moved CPU power up 5 points to 85 and it showed. You really have to pitch the edges of the zone and be willing to walk dangerous hitters. I made a couple mistakes behind in the count and once tried to dump a soft curve over for strike one and Vogt crushed it out.

              Good stuff here!

I'm gping.to revive this thread and continue posting my games here. I am still working on some sim style slider that produce a more organic feel to the games. I am seeking to reduce the smashed line drives being snagged out of the air by infielders shot out of a cannon.

Stumbling upon reducing range for every fielder to minus 25 from their original rating has helped immensely. I think this coupled with a slower gameplay has brought me closer to what I want to see. Not every outfielder can throw a laser into the infield or home plate on a line.

                Here is my latest game:

In some of my videos I click through each of the slider settings. However, I will post my set here that I am currently using. In BOLD are the ones that I feel are critical to the game speed and the reaction of balls off the bat and fielders making plays. Especially not the Base running aggression for the CPU near the bottom. I am still testing this. At 10 in my last game, the CPU took most bases that were there but did not try to stretch anything crazy.

                        Re: GMAB8's 2017 MLB today/slider/roster/franchise/discussion thread

So, here are some of my takeaways with the recent Range editing find and slower sliders to accompany that aspect and some of my theory on my sliders.

First off, I have based nearly all of my work on these off of mkharsh33's slider thread. Regardless of some of the differences in values, the same theory is in play, just looking for different feel. Lowering speed obviously means lower throw power etc. Thank you mkharsh for your work!

One difference from most sets out people use, is the fact that I use classic swing. One button press of A and the batter swings. I just like this classic feel and seems to me like the players hit for power that should and some guys that are smaller bats still can pop it at times.

Also, another big difference is the 80 pitch speed. To me, this reduces the amount of smashed balls off bat. I started seeing more soft line drives and ground balls for singles. Balls get into the gaps that look like true to life doubles and I am still seeing a nice share of home runs.

OF and IF throw power is the other difference from most sets that I wanted to see differently. With the 70 throw power from the OF, nearly every player could throw a laser into home plate. And this was ok, given the speed of the baserunners. It was necessary to keep them from taking crazy extra bases. However, I wanted to see more realistic arcs to throws from the outfield. Right now I am at 40 OF throw power and this is close, it may still be a slight bit too soft. But, I am playing my games with the Mariners and their outfielders have average arms. A couple may need to be increased. I am not doing that yet.

Pitcher composure influence is something I have left on default Legend setting because I feel the game was programmed to see a nice struggle for those pitchers that have been rattled and this adds to the difficulty of pitching.

User Pitching Control at 10 makes it so that I have to be careful when throwing a pitch near the middle of the zone and it gets me the right Ball/Strike ratio when pitching.

That is a rundown of some of my thoughts on these sliders. Now, what I am seeing from the range attribute edited is a very interesting! At first, I tried editing everyone down to 25. This was too extreme. Outfielders were unable to make a break on any balls in gaps and baserunners were running wild even at slower speeds. Shogunofharlem has done a ton of attribute testing and he suggested a minus 25 across the board for all fielders and that has seemed to be the ticket! I haven't seen a single one of my pet peave plays in this game, where the infielders makes a sprinting catch of a blistered line drive in the infield. And at the same time, I have seen line drives caught. Lasers at the pitcher and diving plays by infielders. All of this is very encouraging to see in the gameplay.

I'll continue to post gameplay and slider/settings as I go! Please feel free to provide any feedback, positive or negative! I am just trying to get the right looking/feeling sim style game.

                        -Mark

Here is game 2 of today. Slider changes in the description. Base runner speed up to 10. Increased CPU contact to 90 and dropped power to 90. I'm trying to take away a few shots into the gaps by the CPU. I have had a few too many doubles and triples.

Also, throwback uniforms are being sported in this one. Mariners at Jays, back to late 70's early 80's, at the time of both franchise's inception!

Paxton versus Stroman in a battle between young aces of their staff. Great game. Enjoy!

Mariners at Astros. I bumped CPU contact to 100 and CPU power down to 90 for this game. Probably a bit too much firepower for my liking, although the Astros are capable of this kind of offense. They hit 6 home runs, but my offense put up a good fight. I had an early lead that I squandered. Seems you need to pitch around everyone in their lineup!

I'll probably go back to 80 CPU contact and 100 CPU power from here on out. I really like how most games play out that way.

Side note, does anyone know how to pitch effectively with a sinkerball pitcher? That is one pitch I can't seem to master how to get in the strikezone when I need to.

Yankees came to town to take on the struggling Mariners. Mike Leake(another sinkerballer I am struggling with, any tips would be helpful!) was unable to contain the Yankee bats. Severino was solid. M's had their chances to score but failed several times with runners in scoring position.
