Re: Palmeiro tests positive for steroids

This is actually kinda funny.... At my old job, we were sitting around talking about Giambi, Bonds, Caminiti, and all the steroids speculation.... This one cat mentions Raffy's name, and we're like "dude.... whatever.... No way Palmeiro's on steroids...." And he kept on about it, saying Raffy had to be on them... I just figured Raffy never fit the stereotype of a steroid user... He didn't bulk up a whole bunch, he didn't go down with extended injuries...

Dude left the company a while before I did, but I'm sure he's gonna try and track me down via email so I can eat some fried crow.

If the 10 days started today, he would be back for the Aug. 12 game at home vs. Toronto. I wonder what the fan reaction will be.

Everyone was all over McGwire for dancing around the topic, now it's shown that Palmerio lied to Congress. Don't tell me that after the hearing's he decided to start taking 'roids!? Guilty, guilty, guilty. Everyone was saying Big Mac doesn't deserve in the hall now, so by that logic, neither does Palmerio.

Re: Palmeiro tests positive for steroids

Very good point made during today's Braves broadcast: When, exactly, did MLB know about this positive test? In his statement, Palmeiro stated that he had already appealed and through an independent arbitrator had it denied. So, just how long has this been going on? Did he know of all this before he made the run on 3000 a couple weeks ago? What special treatment, if any, did MLB give him because of that milestone and this weekend's Hall of Fame inductions?

Ratt - I was wondering the same thing and actually posted something very similar to that on a Pirates site.

It seems as though MLB gave Raffy some special circumstances and decided to not announce this until X weeks/months after he tested positive. I wonder if there are any other players like this? It just seems very odd.

This has turned the O's season into a complete fiasco. First the sudden collpase to a team that seemed destined to at least make a legit run at the playoffs to pretty much being a no-show during the trading deadline, now Raffy suspended for substance abuse. What's next? Cal Ripken arrested for double homicide?

I like the comments about Kenny Rogers getting a longer suspension then Raffy.

My biggest problem with this whole story is that HGH, the drug that was used in the Balco case is still not tested for.

Re: Palmeiro tests positive for steroids

The thing about the suspension lengths between Palmeiro and Rogers is, for one of the two, the media and public's opinion is going to be far detremental to their present and future than the other.

Raffy stands to lose far more for the ten games he is going to sit out than Rogers could ever lose for his twenty. No one is going to not consider Rogers for the HOF because threw around a camera -- it's going to be because he doesn't have the credentials on the stats page. Palmeiro on the other hand, is going to lose a huge chunk of his votes now because of today's revelations, even though he does have very strong support from his stats.

I agree, it's complete bunk that one player gets twenty games for throwing a camera to the ground twice, while another spits in the face of tradition and credibility and gets only ten games; but when it comes down to it, no one is going to remember how many games either got for their action years from now.

Good point, in fact, 10 years from now Kenny Rogers won't even be mentioned, but Palmerio will still be talked about as the only 500 home run club member to test positive for steroids.

Howard Eskin (some Philadelphia radio man) said he knew the MLB was going to announce that a big name MLB player was going to be suspended due to steroids. My friend told me about it probably 4 days ago.

I don't know when they caught Palmeiro, but we do know that the MLB wanted to announce this after the Hall of Famer's were inducted on Sunday.

All these guys getting caught say the same crap: "I never knowingly took steroids". Man up and just admit it and take responsiblity of your own actions.

Also, it's convienent for these players to say they were ignorant in regards to the steroids they were taking, but that shouldn't exempt them from punishment.

If Rafael wants to be a true role model, why not take some accountability instead pleading ignorance in the hopes that it will somehow allow him to save face?

MLB posted a story about it.

"Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro was suspended Monday for 10 days by Major League Baseball for violating its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and will begin serving the suspension immediately."

I, for one, am giving him the benefit of the doubt. Read this:

"I am sure you will ask how I tested positive for a banned substance. As I look back, I don't have a specific answer to give. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to explain to the arbitrator how the banned substance entered my body. The arbitrator did not find that I used a banned substance intentionally -- in fact, he said he found my testimony to be compelling -- but he ruled that I could not meet the heavy burden imposed on players who test positive under the new drug policy."

So either he's a really good pathological liar, or he hasn't taken any steriods intentionally.
